Feature Request: "Search in Google" should open new tab

Hi,
This is a request for the Safari Dev team.
Highlighting a text and right-clicking on it shows the "Search in Google" option which is VERY convenient. Currently, clicking "Search in Google" takes you to the results page of whatever you wanted google to search. That, naturally, means that I have to leave the page I'm viewing. What I'm suggesting is having the "Search in Google" option open a tab in the background and I can view it later.
Thanks,

Hi,
I'm not on a Mac to test at present, but what happens when you hold down the command key and right-click on the text? Opening links with the cmd key held down opens them in a new tab so maybe it will do the same thing for this feature.

If not, send feedback via Safari menu > Report Bugs to Apple... or via [this webpage|www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html]. The developers don't hang out around here much so it's unlikely they'll see your request.

Software? See if you can get it removed with some anti-malware tools. Spybot, AVG, Kapersky, et cetera...
If you know the name of the program, you could search the registry for any instance of that name and --be CAREFUL--delete them.
And I have to ask: Did you go back to Firefox after uninstalling this program and reset the "when I open a new tab..." setting? What about your home page?

• Links in search results do not open new tabs.

I'm missing something here and in other threads on this subject. I used to be able to search in the search bar, using google, for instance, and a new tab would open with the search results. Then if I left clicked on a link within the search results another new tab would open and switch to the linked page.
I don't remember how that was set up, but I know I didn't have to go into about:config or install a special add-on for that. I think it was set up in the tab mix plus add-on.
I have no problem with the search results opening a new tab, it's that I now have to middle-click on a link or right-click + click on "open in new tab".
What changed here and why? My old method worked in Ver. 21, it Changed in Ver. 22.
It seems like all these "updates" remove stuff we used to have with no notice and then come up with more finger clicks and config edits to do what was straight forward before.

• Command-Return in Toolbar Search field does not open new tab

Since the 3.1 update, pressing Command-Return in the Toolbar Google Search field does not open the search results in a new tab. Command-Return in the URL field still works properly.
Is anyone else having this issue and possibly a fix?

i'm guessing you're using inquisitor.

Hi [email protected]
If you have set Google to be your homepage, that should be the first one to appear. Are you seeing the Firefox home page when you open new tabs? New tabs should be blank by default. The only reason I've seen Firefox open new tabs with Firefox data on it is after an upgrade of the product.

When a pop up window comes up it is - search bookmarks and history window! I cannot log into my bank as login button should open new window to log in but I get the search page. I cannot see larger images as again I get the search bookmarks and history page etc. Happens on all options that should open new page. I am so frustrated, this has been happening since Firefox updated itself 2 days ago to Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET4.0C) was fine before that. using windows vista. Can you please advise what I should do? Also can you go back to previous version? Error console eg

• My home page is set to google & is always open, after i open new tabs to other web pages & then go back to the original home page tab it is frozen or if not frozen you try to do a search & it displays nothing (blank page white background)

If the above problem occurs I can open a new home(ie google) in a new tab & it works every time.
When original home page isnt frozen & will let you do a google search but displays blank you cannot return to the original page (ie using back button or home button).
When the page is frozen you can do nothing with it.

• Have recently updated firefox. Previously, opening a new tab, cursor would be in google's search field, as google was my home page; now when I open new tab, cursor appears in url bar; this is bugging me a lot. How do I fix this setting?

cursor in URL bar when opening new tab; setting for this?

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

• "Search in Google" always open Safari

I have Flock set as my default browser. When I'm in the Finder, or Mail, or TextEdit etc., select a word and command click to select "Search in Google," Safari opens instead of Flock. Is there another place I have to change this preference?

Yes, this is really pushy, annoying, and monopolistic behavior! I use firefox. I like Apple mail, and search in Google is a nice feature, but I don't want it to bring up Safari, especially when I'm already running firefox!
Anxiously awaiting someone with a fix, workaround, or for Apple to start behaving well. (Isn't this the sort of thing Microsoft is always accused of doing? Yet under Windows, I can make Firefox the default! Well, if that doesn't wake up Apple...)

• I tried some software that changed my settings to use Bing, How can I change my settings to have google as my new tab search. Not the upper right bar the center

Not the upper right the center one when you click on new tab

I'm guessing you want to use Google as your new tab page?
You can do that by editing about:config:
*Go to about:config (via Location Bar)
*Click the "I'll be careful, I promise!" to proceed.
*Search for '''browser.newtab.url'''
*Right click and click Modify > type '''www.google.com'''
*Then click OK to accept changes
*Restart Firefox and see if the new tab pulls up as Google.

I've been working on this all day!!! I've tried everything I know of and can't get it to load either. Sounds like lots of people are having problems. Here is what I have so far...I have uninstalled EVERYTHING on my pc from apple and reinstalled itunes to no avail. I have tried all sorts of things I've read as fixes online. NOTHING has worked. Here is something interesting that i have noticed though. my main pc (which is the one i have always managed my itunes account with for years) is a 32 bit system running windows 7. Yesterday I installed itunes for the first time on my new netbook which is a 64 bit (windows 7) system and it works just fine. i have three other laptops (all window 7) in my household that are all 64 bit operating systems and ALL have updated to 10.5 and THEY ALL work fine. this is FOUR 64 bit systems ALL updated w/10.5 that work and ONE that is a 32 bit that will not. Can't get any help from apple. their suppot *****! I want to get someone on the **** phone or a live chat but cant. *** APPLE????? please let mw know if you find SOMETHING i can try next. I'm out of ideas and patience!

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

• When opening new tab, how to make me able to type in the adress bar directly without clicking on it? -- (about:config reset and add-on doesn't work)

Hi all,
Need a help relating New Tab on Mozilla.
I want to be able to directly type in the address bar everytime I open a new tab in Mozilla, without clicking anything. To be clearer, it means that everytime I open the new tab, the blinking cursor is already on the address bar.
What's happening right now is everytime I open new tab, the cursor is not placed anywhere--not on the search bar on the page, not on the address bar. I should put the cursor somewhere to do something.
I tried using the about:config reset (1) and installing custom new tab (2), but both do not work.
When I tried the about:config reset the Reset button is not highlighted (I assume it means it's default already), and the Custom New Tab doesn't yield in different result.
What confuse me is 2 days ago my Mozilla works just fine. Everytime I opened a new tab, the blinking cursor was on the address bar and I was able to type directly.
Thank you and appreciate the help!!
Note:
(1) about:config reset:
- Type about:config into the address bar and press Enter.
- To bypass the warning, press the big button labeled "I'll be careful, I promise!".
- In the search box, paste browser.newtab.url
- In the search results, right-click browser.newtab.url and choose Reset.
(2) Custom Add On reset:
- Install Custom New Tab. = https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/custom-new-tab/
- Open the Add-ons Manager (Ctrl+Shift+A; Mac: Command+Shift+A), then the Extensions category.
- Next to Custom New Tab, click the Options button.
- Set whatever page you want to open in each new tab (about:newtab is the default; about:home is the default home page), and make sure "Place focus in URL bar" is not checked.

ok, as a follow up i'd recommend disabling half of the addons & restarting the browser - if the problem continues disable the other half & continue until you've narrowed it down to the culprit...

Hi Philipp,
I read the link you copied on the first post and also tried your recommendation above. None seem to work. Even if I disable all add-ons, the problem still persists.
One other info, this problem seem to appear after I installed several program yesterday. These programs apparently installed other programs that set my homepage and main search engine to a particular website. But I installed all of these programs already. Would that be a cause of the problem?
Thanks.

• When I open new tabs it is an AOL tab. I have Fire F as my homepage? How do I change this?

I set my home page to mozilla or yahoo, but when I open new tabs it keeps bringing up AOL search engine. I don't want this b/c it is useless and always brings up irrelevant search results. How do I change what tabs open up after homepage is set?

You should just be able to choose whatever search engine you prefer

• Navigation bar opens new tabs for links on the same site - only newer versions of FireFox does this! Why?

I've used this custom navigation bar for nearly a decade. New versions of FireFox open new tabs when I navigate to different pages on my weather site. Very annoying!!! I've tried turning off tabs, but then it opens NEW WINDOWS! These links ARE NOT ENCODED TO OPEN IN NEW WINDOWS! What is causing this? Looks like I"m going to have to switch to Chrome or go back to IE, since nobody at Mozilla seems to care about this. They seem to think it is a good feature and not a bug. What gave you the right to decide to open new tabs at random times? If I click a link on a site that is on the same site I'm already on, and the link isn't coded for _blank, then it should open in the same window!

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
