Feature request: selective per-file Smart Previews in LR5

I would like to be able to selectively enable Smart Previews on a per-file basis, rather on entire directories.
It would be great if I could do this after importing files, too.
I am using:
Lightroom 5.0 64-bit
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

You can BUILD smart previews on a per-file basis by clicking the original photo button in the lower left corner of the histogram.  In grid view of the Library module, it will build smart previews for all the photos you have selected.  In Develop module, it will build a smart preview for the most-selected photo.  Not sure if this is what you want.

  • Selecting photos by smart preview status, changed metadata, etc

I want to be able to select photos inside Lightroom based upon criteria which the program tracks but does not let you select on, for instance pictures without smart previews, pictures that have had their metadata changed externally, etc.  The system knows which pictures these are but doesn't let you view them as a set or act upon them as a set ( building smart previews, as far as I know requires manual selection in an updated catalog or universal operation, you can't select just those without smart previews).  Since the system keeps track of the status, it would be nice if you could select that status to view or act upon them as a set.  If anyone knows how to do this, I would appreciate it.

You need to look at Smart Collections. Both of those examples are available in the smart collection criteria.

  • How do you access 'finder' when building Smart Previews in Lr5.

How do you access 'finder' when building Smart Previews in Lr5

    C,
What type of backup was it? I'm hoping you were using Time Machine or creating a Bootable Clone using Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner. If that is the case then I'd recommend starting over so you can restore all your data, applications, settings etc... You missed your first chance when you turned on the new system and it asked if you had another Mac you wanted to migrate from. You can get a  second chance to do this and migrate. Please carefully look over Pondini's Lion Setup Assistant tips beginning where he talks about Second Chance....and make sure you have the proper cable before starting. If your backup EHD has a USB connection that will be fine if it has a FireWIre 400 connection you will a cable like this one from Amazon.
You can find these at your local computer store, Walmart, Radio Shack etc..

  • Feature request: Frames Per Second info for clips / Warning when exporting

I know that this may not be the right place to post, but I think many of us users would agree that this feature would be useful in iMovie. Especially for new users who are not even familiar with terms like "frame rate".
Let's assume you import a video from your digital camera. You are not an expert in this field, so you edit the video in iMovie. Then you export it using QuickTime. The final video is jerky... and this can be due to incorrect frame rate settings.
It would be nice if iMovie provided some warning if you are trying to import video at a different frame rate setting than your original video source. Just a pop-up saying "Your video was recorded 29.97 frames per second (FPS) and you are trying to export it into 25 FPS. This can cause some playback issues."
Maybe even suggest the correct frame rate setting for the export. Apple's software is always trying to make things easier. I think regular users do not even know about "frame rates", so it might be a good idea to warn them.
Also, how can you tell what FPS are your sources in iMovie? There is no way to tell what FPS was the clip recorded in. To find out, you have to go back into iPhoto, then drag the clip into QuickTime and only there you can select "Get Info" and find the recorded FPS for the specific clip.
This seems like a lot of trouble to go through, just to find out a very basic information about the clip.
I would like to see some functionality like this added to iMovie. I think many of us users would welcome this feature.
    What do you guys think?

Click iMovie/Provide Feedback. That will send your enhancement request to the developers.

  • Feature request: Select objects inside Fence

    HI,
It would be very nice to be able to select only what's inside a rectangular selection fence with the selection tool.
Maybe having a modifier to disable it or a left/right fence protocol (left to right=select inside, right to left select touching) would be nice,
It would make selection a lot faster in many circumstances.
    Thanks

I think that would be a very elegant solution. Please reply to this thread if you agree! Maybe we can make Apple implement this for Keynote'10!
    Hi Markus,
Elegant or not, if you want Apple's development team to know about your wish list, this user-to-user forum isn't the place to tell them.
In Keynote, go to the Keynote menu, choose Provide Keynote Feedback, and make your request. Feedback there goes directly to Apple.
While you're waiting (If the feature is implemented, it won't be until at least the next version of Keynote), here's the less-elegant way to do this:
First, try to locate a place you can click to select the desired object directly—somewhere that it is not covered by an object in front of it. Click on the background, then press command-A to Select All (objects on the slide). Examine the outline and handles on the desired object. If you find a place to click and select it, click the background again to deselect all objects, then click on the desired object.
Second, if that doesn't work (ie. if the desired object is entirely covered by another object), click and select the object preventing your desired selection, then go Arrange > Send Backward* (or press shift-option-command-B). Now click the desired object. If it still can't be selected, repeat until it can (and do keep track of how many steps it took so that you can restore the stack to the original order).
As always, when making changes of this sort, it's good to Save just before starting the changes to provide a route back if things go awry.
    Regards,
    Barry
*You could also choose Send to Back (shift-command-B), but not knowing how many steps back it's been sent could cause you problems in restoring the stack to a useable order.

  • FEATURE REQUEST: 'Select Printer' option when printing envelopes or labels

I have a Samsung laserjet printer that will not print labels properly with the default paper type setting...the toner smears. So I have created a second printer object for the Samsung device with 'Labels' selected as the default paper type and I've named
it 'Samsung Labels'. I can select it as the printer in Word 2010 and it will print labels correctly for that session. I've read the discussion about Word 2010 only remembering the printer preferences during the current session. That is unfortunate, but I consider
this to be even worse: when you click the 'Print' button after creating your label or envelope, Word just prints to the default printer without displaying the print control panel. This prevents me from selecting the printer object that I've created to print
labels correctly with my Samsung. I use a number of different printers and I don't want to necessarily use my default printer for Word. I want to be able to select a different default printer for Word and also have the option to select a different printer
for a particular print task in Word...like labels. I don't want to have to go into Word's print options every time I want to print a label and make sure that everything is set correctly. It makes no sense that I can't select a printer object when I hit the
print button. There are a million 'features' built into Office that I would never think of using, but one that seems so obvious is missing. Arg!
I doubt that I'll hear back from someone with a simple work around for this, but I'd love it if I did.
    Thanks in advance,
    Wayne
Wayne S. CompTIA A+ CompTIA Network+ Microsoft MCP

I would like to second Wayne's suggestion but I am concerned with printing envelopes, not labels. I have been a PC user (and even an instructor) since the days of VisiCalc, Lotus 1-2-3, and the first Microsoft products. It has never ceased to amaze me
that, as mentioned by Wayne, the most fundamental needs are overlooked. It wastes a lot of my time to constantly have to change the printer just to print an envelope or to print something on letterhead. We have a lot of documents that include one letter on
letterhead followed or preceded by several pages that need to print on plain paper. I think I should be able to tell Word that page X is letterhead, and the others default to the plain paper tray or printer. I also should be able to tell the print envelopes
feature that envelopes are on printer X or tray X. Then every time I need to print such a document, I just click print for the doc and envelope print for the envelope (I keep an icon for this in my toolbar). We use a legal software package in our office that
lets you specify the appropriate printer and tray for reports, general checks, trust checks, labels, receipts, deposit slips, bills and pre-bills! Super easy and convenient. Word processing should be SMART so we don't have to be bothered with these very mundane
and never-ending printer issues!! Please, please, take this to the top! Please send your developers to actual real-world users and find out our needs!!!

  • Feature request: Scale to fit (Smart Scale)

    Hello,
When I either drag a layer from one doc to another, when I drop it, or even via copy and paste, it would be nice to have a SCALE TO FIT option.
Often when working with different resolution images, you still need to make them fit. Either scaling down to fit target document size, or scale up. Kind of like a Super Smart Object.
If you have different ratios, i.e 4:3, 16:9 etc. you can have option to either scale to fit width, or height. or simply scale to fit 100% in the canvas.
Very much like we have in most print dialog boxes.
It could be a keyboard comand or even contextual menu: SCALE TO FIT.
A selected object or layer can be right clicked: scale to fit. Would help workflow. Would be easy to impliment.
Option: Constrain Proportions check box. example, if I am bringing in say a texture I want to use with blend modes. this option would scale the X and Y to fit the canvas.
    Thank you!

  • Feature request: open the file I clicked, even if the terms need to be accepted

Three times today I've gone to open a file and the 'New Terms' window opened up. Each time I clicked it and the program opened, though without my file being open. I then have to go back, find the file and open it again. I wouldn't normally complain, but this happens a LOT, as Adobe programs update constantly. Or something.
When I click a file, i want it to open, not to deal with adobe's admin needs. I'm trying to get things done and am already paying lots of money to do so.
Please add some code to continue opening files even after I deal with your terms and conditions requests.

    Hello,
i assume that you have otf output which you convert to PDF. If this is the case then one solution in the multiple document print situation is the following.
Before converting documents from otf to pdf concatenate all otf into on table. Then convert everything at once into one big PDF file. Now the enduser needs only open one pdf file and print this out. In my solution i even do not write files. Instead i use RFC to move pdf data and then append the pdf to the output using cl_wd_runtime_services=>attach_file_to_response.
The complete docu is available in Display Smartform Pdf output in ABAP Webdynpro application

  • Feature Request: Selective Backup and Restore

I know this is a board that apple doesn't answer questions to and blah blah blah but let's not kid ourselves that they don't monitor everything that goes on here; now thats out of the way.
Something that would be really useful would be selective backup/restore. Cuz i'm sure there are times when you what to restore only a specfic app and nothing else, or your messages.
Also if you're cleaning up your device and you accidently delete the wrong app; you will lose all that data with that app but inorder to restore that app and data you have to restore to a pervious backup and go through the process of re-deleting those apps.
Or if you want to restore your apps/data but have your settings start from scratch.
I don't know, I think this type of backup/restore feature could be very useful to alot of people...does any1 else agree?

You face 2 problems: The first is that polls are forbidden by the terms of use of the forum. The second is this:
    Unsolicited Idea Submission Policy
Apple, as with many other companies, do not want outsiders to suggest ideas, because if the company implements the idea they can later be sued for copyright violation or, in the worst case, patent infringement.

  • Feature Request: Tagging coupled with Smart Folders

Would love to see the next version of Safari add tagging, as has been mentioned here before, but more importantly I'd like to see Smart Folder capability added as well.
I'm a big fan of Smart Folders in Mail; makes it easy to file -- I just drop everything in my "Saved Mail" folder, then set up the Smart Folders as needed (e.g., "Client Mail", "Mom", "Amazon - Sold, Ship Now", etc.
Applying the same process to Safari bookmarks would be wonderful. For instance, let's say I have a bookmark for the plastic modeling website Starship Modeler (starshipmodeler.com); I could tag it with "Modeling" (obvious), "Shopping" (since it has a store), "Sci-Fi", and then even more specific tags like "Star Wars" or "2001 A Space Odyssey". I could then make a smart folder that would find bookmarks tagged only with "shopping" and "Star Wars", and it'd show up there. But it would also show up in my smart folder just for "modeling", etc.
Right now I have hundreds of bookmarks if not more. I've tried a number of tagging programs but none really fit the bill. Native tagging, along with smart folders, would make Safari far and ahead my favorite browser (which it already is, but more so, eh?).

  • Feature request: support THM files

As title suggest, I would like PSE11 and above to support *.thm files. Those files come along with video files and contain exif data.

Just to verify here, you can no longer create a Photoshop.com account, those services are being discontinued.
To post on the Feedback site (feedback.photoshop.com) you do not need a Photoshop.com account. You should be creating a GetSatisfaction account (the web site that actually hosts the feedback section of the Photoshop.com web site).
To do this, once on Feedback.Photoshop.com:
    1. Click on "Sign in" in the upper right corner of the page.
    2. Click "Click here if you already have a Get Satisfaction account" at the bottom of the dialog window that appears.
    3. Click "Or, create a new Get Satisfaction account..." in the new dialog window that appears.
    4. Enter the requested information (name, email, etc) and click "Sign up"

  • Feature Request - Play .WAV files in Bridge Messages

I just found an interesting feature,
My Corporate Voicemail is emailed to me in .WAV files.  I can play them on my 9550 but the Bridge Messages on the PB report unsupported file type.
I'm a little surprised by this but hope it is just an update away...

i would like to see this as well.  i too have a 9550 and *.wav files sent to me from my office voicemail.

  • Feature request - Export Draw files from Creative Cloud to Illustrator

It's really annoying that you can't export Draw files from assets.adobe.com to Illustrator CC, that you have to do this from your iPad. If my battery is flat, or I have left my iPad somewhere I can only export REALLY crappy low res jpgs or pngs. Coupled with the recent issues the Send to Illustrator function has suffered it's annoying that work is being locked up in this way. I understand that it's important for Adobe to protect their products, but these restrictions are making workflows really hard work. It would be ideal if we could access the mobile files using the Place tool in inDesign etc too so we could drop a drawing file in to a document in the same way we can a regular image or ai/psd file

This is a bug. Will update this thread once it is fixed.

  • Feature request: Select emails by count-from-sender

Please allow me to select emails by count? e.g. indexing all the senders and counting the emails received from each.
    Here's how that would help:
When it comes to free up a few Gigs of space in disk and improve Mail's performance, selecting thousands of emails from a few big senders is more effective than attempting the crazy task of bothering ourselves with finding just undreds of emails from hundreds of small senders!
Most of the emails we'd like to be able to handle without deleting them nor letting them to fall into the spam filter's claws, are the ones we ACTUALLY suscribed to, but never had the time to recover the password, login to them, update the email preferences (most times tricky or falsely advertised as "editable", or just impossible)… a total mission certainly harder than just leting them come, and some day delete them all. After all, It's easy: selecting ALL the emails from facebook, hit delete. Done.
Now multiply that for tens of big senders, and it's a pain.
I want to select the emails by COUNT BY SENDER, and be able to slide up or down the threshold to select them.
Slide to the left, and all emails from senders with at least 2 emails sent will be selected.
Slide to the right and only emails from senders with e.g. 10 emails sent would be selected.
( Read or unread would be a good extra criteria )
That way, I don't need to go through the hundreds of small senders and wear out my brain thinking one by one whether to delete it or not, for what? to delete just a few hundred emails an hour!.
This way I can go through a few giants, and delete thousands at once.
Or is ther a way to do it (script? add-on? rule?) and I didn't find it?

You are not talking to Apple here, we are just other users like you. You can copy all you wrote above and give feedback to Apple here:

  • Feature request: Ability to limit smart bookmark searches to tag field

I'm only now learning to appreciate smart bookmark folders, but I'd like to be able to create more specific searches with them. Specifically, I'd like to be able to limit my searches to the tag field. I have a "recipe" smart bookmark that works nicely, except for the "Recipes for financial success" article that it also pulls in.
