Feature Suggestion for Keyboard System Preferences - Modifier Keys

I recently picked up an iMac and it came with the new low-profile aluminum small keyboard -- without the keypad.
I really like the small keyboard except for one thing -- the placement of the fn and control keys. The larger keyboard has three modifier keys on the left side: Control, Option, Command. The small keyboard has four: fn, Control, Option, Command.
It is annoying to switch between keyboards where the control key is in a different spot on each one. Retraining my finger on a per-keyboard basis is hard.
Apple thoughtfully provided in System Preferences a Keyboard control panel and it thoughtfully provided a "Modifier Keys..." popup to allow you to reassign the modifer keys. A great feature.
The problem is: you can't use this to modify the behavior of the 'fn' key. It is apparently hardcoded.
If I could use the modifier keys dialog to change the 'fn' into a 'Control', then I could use this keyboard without swearing everytime I miss the control key.
Another feature that would be great would be if I could also have different bindings for the modifers on the left side versus the modifiers on the right. That would allow me to reassign one of the right side modifier keys (that I never use) to be an 'fn' key.

I'm in the exact same boat as you...that Fn key is driving me nuts. I tried DoubleCommand and some other things as well, but the only thing that's coming close to what I want is a free download called "KeyRemap4MacBook."
Just go under the "Remap Fn Key" section and you can basically have it act as the Command key. (I actually always had my Command and Control keys swapped, so now both the Fn and Control keys now essentially act as the Command key.)
There are a few quirks I haven't figured out -- I can't seem to do Forward Delete -- but again, it's the only thing I've found so far that works.

How can I speed up the "start speaking" feature in iBooks? (System Preferences Dictation and speech does not do anything to the speech speed.) The rate is a bit to slow.

Hi, I had the same problem you described, and I noticed that there are two ways of activating text to speech on iBook for Mac, with different speed results (at least on my MacBook Pro Retina display)
On your iBook you can select the text and and then click on > More> Start speaking,  and you will get a certain speed, which tends to be too slow.
But you will get the speed you had selected with "Go to System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech. In there is a slider to adjust the speaking rate." if you use the TOP MENU (next to the black apple)  under Edit>Speech>Start Speaking. I also learned that under System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech, there is an option for a shortcut which is very helpful. And you can change Key. Hope this was helpful.

  • Keyboard system preferences resetting after restart

    Greetings,
I began with 2 similar problems.  My menu bar and keyboard system preferences would reset after each startup.  I fixed the former with https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6028346?tstart=0
Still, every time I restart or logout my keyboard system preferences reset to the default.  These defaults interfere with the software I run- Logic & Pro Tools, so while not the worst thing to have to remember to reset them each time, it is a drag.
    Any help will be appreciated
    Thanks

The procedure below will reset the permissions of a user's home folder in OS X 10.7.4 or later, including 10.8 or later. If you're running an earlier version of 10.7, update to the latest version first. This procedure should not be used under OS X versions older than 10.7.4.
Back up all data before you begin.
    Step 1
Click the Finder icon in the Dock. A Finder window will open.
    Step 2
Press the following key combinations, in the order given:
    Command-3
    Shift-command-H
Command-I (the letter "I" as in "Info.")
The Info window of your home folder will open.
    Step 3
Click the lock icon in the lower right corner and authenticate with the name and login password of an administrator on the system. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Step 4
In the Sharing & Permissions section of the window, verify that you have "Read & Write" privileges. If not, use the "+" and "-" buttons in the lower left corner to make the necessary changes.
    Step 5
By default, the groups "staff" and "everyone" have "Read Only" privileges. With those settings, the files at the top level of your home folder will be readable by other local users. You can change the privileges to "No Access" if you wish, but then your Public and Drop Box folders will be inaccessible to others. Most likely, you don't need to change these settings.
    Step 6
If there are entries in the Sharing & Permissions list for users or groups other than "me," "staff," and "everyone," delete them.
    Step 7
Click the gear icon at the bottom of the Info window and select Apply to enclosed items... from the drop-down menu. Confirm. The operation may take several minutes to complete. When it does, close the Info window.

  • Bluetooth and keyboard system preferences not working

    Hi all,
When I try to change the keyboard system preferences or the bluetooth system preferences, the 'application' locks up (Doesn't bring up any details, force quit gets out of it). I've tried leaving it for ages to see if it eventually opens but it doesn't.
This means I can't use any bluetooth devices or change the keyboard shortcuts.
It only happens on one of my otherwise identical Mac Pros; the other is fine.
Any clues as to how to repair it? I could try reinstalling Snow Leopard, but I'd rather try ditching a preference file first.
    Thanks in advance,
    Simon.

What is the keyboard command to open your SYSTEM PREFERENCES?

    Hello Ethridged,
There is no built in keyboard shortcut for opening system preferences. However, you can create one using the steps provided in this article.

    Hi 'baltwo'
Thank you for your link, I already had been on this particular website this afternoon. they only discuss problems in the application and nothing about how the MS Office application installation does disturb Mac OS.
Or have I missed a special comment there?

  • Keyboard Shortcut for Sound System Preferences

    Hi everyone -
One of my favorite keyboard shortcuts on the Mac is "option + volume up" (or volume down) keys. This automatically opens system preferences and takes you to the sound preferences. I must use this at least a dozen times a day.
I recently got a new (non Apple) keyboard, and while it does have option and volume keys, the above shortcut does not work. Does anyone know what key commands the computer receives to cause the sound preferences to open?
I like to maybe use one of the softkeys on the keyboard to recreate this shortcut. Thanks! I've called Logitech and opened a case with a product specialist at Apple, but I figured I'd try here too.
    Thanks!

never knew about this shortcut. pretty useful. I also have to access this pane very often to switch between sound output devices. this got very annoying and I found this freeware

try it out. it's even quicker than using your shortcut.

  • Cannot get into keyboard system preferences

    Hey all,
I just installed a Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 for Mac and everything seems to work fine except for the Expose and Dashboard keys. On Logitech's website it says you can fix it by going into System Preferences -> Keyboard, but since I installed the Logitech keyboard it just says "Loading Keyboard..." when I click it and nothing happens. Any idea how to fix this?

Essentially that fixed it. I just uninstalled Logitech's Control Center application (Applications -> Utilities) and restarted and it worked. Didn't have to reinstall anything, keyboard still works, and now I can access my preferences and fix the wrongly-binded keys.

  • Mighty Mouse - Mouse/keyboard system preferences gone

I have a bluetooth mighty mouse instaled in my computer but now I cannot access the mouse/keyboard preferences in the System preferences. They do not appear. The mouse is working just fine but I cannot change anything in the preferences. And I cannot watch the state of charge of the batteries either. I cannot see nothing. That tab is all grey now.
I tried also to do so via the bluetooth preferences but when I ask to open the Bluetooth preference of the mouse a window appears and says that the mouse preferences are not shown because I haven't any mouse connected to my computer.
I remember that when I had access I changed the name of the mouse.
I already deleted the connection and tried to re-install it again. But the mouse appears with the same name, and the problem persists.
    Please... Any bright soul?

I have a slightly different problem: My bluetooth Mighty Mouse works in a basic mode (primary & secondary button, scroll wheel) but the side buttons and scroll buttons do not work. In the Keyboard & Mouse preferences, I have Dashboard set up for the scroll button and Expose set up for the side buttons. They do not work. If I set up the primary or secondary buttons for Dashboard or Expose, it works. In the Bluetooth tab, the Bluetooth Mouse Name is blank and Battery Level is grayed out. In the Bluetooth Preferences, it shows Mighty Mouse connected. Any ideas? I am running OS X 10.5.4 (but it didn't work in 10.5.3 either)

  • Feature suggestions for Lightroom 3

    Hi team,
Here's a quick summary of some ideas for LR3.  Not sure how late in the dev cycle you guys are (we've seen one public beta so far, I would expect 2 or 3 before you go RTM, and features have not yet been frozen according to my reading):
    * Perspective correction / Keystoning: This has been mentioned a lot here and on other forums - a no-brainer, especially considering that DNG 1.3 specifications allow for it
    * Individual RGB channel control: Something that Capture One & Bibble 5 also have. It's time LR added this feature also, I think
    * Soft-proofing: Hate to bang the drum on this one, but the LR interface could benefit from a readout of which colour space we're operating in for the current image, along with the ability to change this (I would think a simple drop down would do the trick, similar to the Tone Curve type).  This is especially true on account of the fact that Library and Develop use different color spaces to display images (not a bug, a feature - but an obscure one at that)
    * Layers: While I understand the LR team's resistance to layers as a concept (or at least calling it that, since the Adjustment Brush effectively - and very nicely - implements layers in a fashion), it would be handy to have.  For example - let me rearrange the order in which Adjustments are applied.  As a panel in Develop, this could easily be ignored by anyone not wanting to use (or who doesn't understand) Layers as part of their workflow.  Leaving it out to "keep things simple" is not a good idea, IMMHO.  After all, LR is targetted primarily at Pro Photographers and Advanced Enthusiasts - who should know how to use Layers, or at least be willing to learn!
    * If not layers, then perhaps a list of Adjustment Brush pins in a scrollable list, so I can select them based on the adjustments I've made.  Perhaps I could then re-order this list?  The key challenge here would be how best to label each one?
    * Selections / Adjustment Brush: Having Bezier, Rectangle, Ellipse and Free-form as selection options (along with the ability to invert these easily so I can do "Negative" selections where that's quicker) would be fantastic - this is something LightZone and Bibble both have
    * Paint with Preset: At the moment, the range of settings I can apply with the Adjustment Brush is limited to a half-dozen or so.  I can't paint White Balance, Sharpening (at least not with masking), Noise Reduction, or HSL adjustments, for example.  This would give me lots of very granular control.  It would be fabulous if we had a "Paint with Preset" option or a "Preset Brush" that let me create a Preset, then paint it on at various opacities (combined with the ability to invert selections, this would be extremely powerful).
    * Blend Brush: An alternative to the Paint With Preset might be the ability to "Paint with another Image" over the current one.  This might be useful for blending multiple exposures (e.g. to remove people in landscapes, or to do simple selective HDR blending from multiple exposures).  Having the ability to set the "Blend Mode" (similar to PS's Blend Modes) might also be helpful.  I imagine this new brush would work in a similar fashion to the current Adjustment brush, only it would be combining information from multiple images.  It might be useful to have a "2-up" display similar to compare mode that shows the "Source" and "Target" images side by side (with the ability to zoom in and out)
    * Grayscale Wedge: Would it be possible to have a greyscale wedge that could be displayed beside or underneath an image in Develop?  LightZone has a fantastic implementation of controlling image Zone information using a simple point and click on the wedge.  Well worth checking out.  It would certainly make adjusting tones in the image a lot more intuitive for some people.  I think this concept could be taken a step further.
    * Luminosity Mask: The ability to "Auto Mask" an image based on its luminosity (i.e. which Zone an area falls into) would be way cool as part of the Adjustment Brush.  That way, you could control individual zones easily.  I imagine this tool would have 2 sliders: "Luminosity" (from light to dark) - which would determine the "target" luminosity to Mask; and "Threshold" which would determine the "Width" of the selection in tonal terms.  Holding down the Option key on either slider would show a dynamically generated Mask overlay to help me determine which areas the Mask is applying to
    * Color Mask: See Luminosity Mask above. Same idea, but based on Color.  Perhaps a Color Picker tool would enable me to isolate a Color and create a Mask (which I could then refine using the Erase or AB tools if necessary).  This would have HSL sliders to select the target color, and a "Threshold" slider to control the "Tolerance" either side.  Again, using the Option key would give me a preview similar to the Sharpening / NR tools
    * Perhaps the Selection Tools,  Luminosity and Color Masks above could be combined into a "Smart Mask" panel (or panels) in the Adjustment Brush tool, making it more consistent with the current interface, and making it much easier to create masks with the Adjustment Brush
    * Ability to Maintain Color Profiles inside LR, without having to restart.  I use the X-rite CC Passport to generate Color Profiles at almost every shoot.  It might be helpful to have an easy way to maintain these Profiles (and to share them like we can share presets!).  At very least, add an option in Preferences to open the appropriate Folder so I don't have to go hunting for it.
While the early LR3 beta is encouraging, I do think it is missing many user-requested features, and features its "competitors" already have.  In my view, Lightroom needs to stay ahead of the curve to gain market share.
Once again, congratulations on creating a fantastic tool in Lightroom.  It just keeps getting better with every version (LR3 looks amazing so far for an early beta - love the improved demosaic sharpness and NR).
    Hope these suggestions are helpful.
    Cheers,
    Matthew

Six changes that would be basic improvements - sorry if these look like bug reports, but they have lasted through all the updates and upgrades and I consider them to be overripe for improvement.
For mouse-heavy users it would be helpful to have a Grid icon in the toolbar in the Develop module, the same as appears in the Library module.
The consistency of having a Done button in all places that present a secondary work screen would make leaving those screens simpler.
When organizing folders, keeping the focus local after a Delete would be good, instead of the focus jumping up to a higher level as it does, requiring a search for your location. If you're making a lot of changes this can be time-consuming and frustrating. I know some other program do this, but not all and it's solvable.
When moving a folder of files, the last file doesn't get moved and could wind up in some random place if you don't suspect this and go after it to move it by itself. This seems to be unique to Lightroom.
In leaving Compare, it's not clear which image you're keeping because the filename isn't visible, only the rating (if used). Changing the rating to exit can disable the Done button. To get it back it shouldn't be necessary to swap the images. Why not use a more standard release action like the Escape key?
In LR 3.3, when using the noise reduction slider the option to update the whole filmstrip to use version 2010 is available only if the demonstration "compare" screen is retained with a box checked. If you uncheck that box, there's no way to get that screen back the next time, so the option to update to 2010 for the whole filmstrip at once is gone and subsequently requires one-by-one clicking to update. This could be simpler and faster.
I use LR every day and teach it, but I may have missed something so forgive my naming ills that have already been mentioned. Thanks for listening. DKD

  • Suggestions for upgrading system

I have a Palm Tungsten E2 =, which is showing it's wear and is synced to my XP system.
I tried to upgrade to my Vista machine, but don't want to buy another gadget to make it work there, so I want to upgrade.
I currently have a Verizon cell phone - which only offers basic phone book.
What I want to know - can someone suggest a phone/palm combo that will be able to somehow import all of my info from my xp computer (via email of the file? to save to my vista machine?) that I will then be able to open and use on the 'new phone/pda - I don't want to carry around 2 devices anymore, if that's possible!
I'm no geek, but consider myself somewhat tech savvy - they eyes just can't spend the hours trying to find the info on the web, so I thought I'd ask some of the 'experts' on this  forum.  Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

To find out what version Windows you have installed, go to the computer icon on the PC desktop or from the start menu, right click the icon and go to properties. On the general tab look for the version, it should state if it is 64bit.
Palm OS is not compatible with the Windows contacts and mail program. You need to sync with either Palm desktop or Outlook 2003 or higher. If you want to move the data to Windows contacts and mail, you can export data from palm desktop in several different formats. You can export the contacts in csv format and import into windows contacts. The calendar can export in vcal format and import into windows calendar.
In order to get your data to Vista, if the data is current and correct on the E2, you can sync to Vista without sync'ing to XP. Another option is to export the data from the XP PC and import into Palm desktop on the Vista PC if the E2 is not current.
Here is a procedure for exporting the data.
The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. Click on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=28734
Make sure you select all for the range in the export window.
With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard drive.
Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.

  • Feature suggestion for Safari

This might have been requested before, but I couldn't find it anywhere on this forum so here it goes.
It would be great to have expanding menu for different Internet TLDs under .com-button, just like there's one under a-button for umlauts. For example having .net, .org and .info in menu would make surfing a bit easier. Also adding country spesific TLDs according to users language/location preferences would be nice.

Actually the localization is certainly there for .co.uk for my English (UK) keyboard. I'd never realized that before.
    cheers
    mrtotes
P.S. It's just a shame OS X is trying to get me to change my spelling to 'realised' and 'localisation' even though I have British English set for OS X.

  • Suggestion for linux system?

    Hello guys,
i think sure becasue it has problem about deb and rpm files when you use OpenSuse and i am using on Ubuntu. It is not possible when GNU/Linux convert to current package file = Problem with security like creficate crashes.
Please do not convert with alias! I think better becasue we use any Linux System like any Pengiuns will install and share with *.bin, *.run or *.bundle File.
    Example:
I have been generated this package for Adobe Air Application like this MyAppInstaller.deb than any user will to install deb on OpenSuse. It is a bad way.
When any user will hack with alias with conversion and MyAppInstaller.rpm can not install because it is worng end of coding. That is a bad result.
Now i know becasue any linux users will to important 3 file binaries like *.bin, *.run and *.bundle. 3 binary packages will to open simple for any Linux System. like you are using OpenSuse 14.x or Ferdora 12.x and i am using Ubuntu 10.x or Debian 6.x = It is a nice result with important binary packagers.
I hope you because Adobe AIr 2.8 will to improve and update and supports any Linux Distributed System ( Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Ferdora and Arch Linux and more unknown linux systems... )
Please fix "adl" because i am trying on shell. It can not work because binary is worng and unknown.
    Thanks for suggestions!

I do understand that hardware might play a role on compability on the system, but at this moment I'm just trying to shortlist some OS recommendations.Use OEL - Oracle Enterprise Linux.
No single o/s is that much better than another, that it alone serves as the differentiator for choosing A over B. Usually it is a combination of issues, like network technology used, storage technology used, application technology used, existing infrastructure, budgetary constraints, corporate IT strategy and so, that drives the o/s decision.
But when looking at a Linux specifically as the chosen o/s, and deciding on which distro, those issues have already been factored into the o/s decision.
So one needs to look at other factors - like support for example (a critical one IMO).
Using OEL means that you have now the same vendor responsible for both you o/s s/w layer and db s/w layer. This makes it a lot easier on your part when dealing with complex errors that are not easily isolated (at first) to the o/s or to the db - and then having to deal with different vendors, deal with different support methodologies used by them, and having to play the go-between. (been there, done that - very unpleasant experience)
Other motivating factors - OEL is basically RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) from Oracle. RHEL is one of the most widely used and popular Linux server distros. It is well supported by the Open Source community and by commercial vendors.
Now if you were going to run Apache or JBOSS or something else than Oracle.. then OEL makes less sense. But add Oracle to the mix, and IMO, OEL should be the first consideration of distro to use.

I'm not sure where one posts new feature ideas/requests so I'll try here first... If you have a better place please tell me.
Please add the Quick Look feature to file selection dialogs.
This is where the feature is at it's most useful. For instance, when selecting files to attach to an email, being able to quick look to make sure it's the version I want to send would be very valuable.
