Feature Suggestion // Iris Blur for LR4!

This would help photographers create blurred backgrounds.  It will be great to include this in Lightroom 4, so that we don't have to send a photo into Photoshop CS6 to do Iris Blur.
I could see this tool somewhere near the adjsutment brush and crop tools area, it would be nice to have it easily accesible!

To be fair - not quite: sometimes you want to add text on top of a picture (where LR still falls sadly short), or it is really impossible to shoot from a viewpoint where nothing is included that would not merit a clone-out...
Or you want to mix 2 artistic genres: painting and photography.
No offense intended - I just wanted to make clear that the decisions before pressing the shutter matter most.

  • XSQL new feature suggestion: transform="url" for xsql:query

    To the Oracle XML developers:
I'd like to suggest adding the transform="url" attribute/feature to the <xsql:query> action.
This would allow one to transform and/or apply XSLT conditional logic to the posted XML before it reaches the <xsql:query> action. A couple of key areas where I think this would be very useful are:
    1. handling multiple HTML parameters of the same name.
Currently, the only way to handle this in an <xsql:query> action is to call a Java program via <xsql:action> that can parse the rowified parameters of the same name, then transform it in a format suitable for the <xsql:query>.
    2. verifying user session login status for password protected XSQL pages.
If one could use XSLT to check user authentication BEFORE the <xsql:query> action you could display a login page if the user is not authenticated.
Since the transform="url" feature is already available for other tags (<xsql:update>, <xsql:delete>, etc) I would think adding this to the <xsql:query> action would not require extensive coding from the Oracle XML development team, and yet this simple but powerful feature could help us users to develop pure XML solutions that don't require calls to external Java actions.

There would also be able to simply add the "perspective"as in Photoshop, probablyeasier to develop and integrate the interface.

  • Iris Blur

I just installed Creative Suite 6 upgrade on my Mac computer OS Lion.  When using the Photoshop component, the ring for iris blur does not show up, no way to control the effect.  It does not show up for lighing effects either. What could be wrong?

New Blur Effects and Lighting Effects are GPU features, that means they depend on Graphic card to perform better :

  • Feature request - 'shadow' settings for changing locked VM settings

I have a possible idea for you that I know I would find helpful. I understand that certain VM settings can't be changed while the VM is running. I would love to be able to make the change so that next time the VM restarts, it can first have those settings
changed for me before starting up again. That way, I could make the change (although it would tell me it couldn't be changed right now), and schedule the computer to restart sometime overnight, so that I don't have to either a) get up at 3am to do it manually
or b)work out what powershell command to run which would shut the machine down, make the changes, then start it up again - and hope that I'd done it correctly :-)
I hope this is a useful feature request. Generally very happy with all the improvements you keep making, thanks.
(I didn't find anywhere else I could submit a feature request, so I hope this gets to someone that can use it.)

I like that as a feature for those who manage via GUI.  It would be possible to create script to accomplish the same thing and then schedule the script for execution later.  But for GUI users, it makes sense to me.
I think the forums would be a good place for putting feature suggestions.  It could easily be a Sticky post that would always appear at the top of the forum.  Anyone with an idea for a new feature could add a post to the Stickey post, and
Microsoft PM's could just read that Sticky post from time to time.  And, the built in Vote capability would allow other forum readers/contributors the ability to vote on it if they like it.  It would be a useful Sticky post on any product forum.

Have you tried to set break point on feature activate? If not then set break point on feature activate and try to debug your code line by line.
See this mSDN article to debug timer job:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff798310.aspx
    http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/70866/Debugging-Custom-SharePoint-Timer-Jobs
    Also make sure that:
    1. Once you deploy the time job, you need to reset the IIS
    2. restart the window timer service from services.msc

  • Iris blur shows black picture

    Hi everbody,
I have been looking around the forums and other webpages but haven't found a soluten yet - maybe you can help me. In Photoshops CS6 when applying an Iris blur the picture turns black.
When I move the pins around I see the picture but this goes away as soon as no pin is moved.
This behaviour has been reported on other webpages before but there has been no solution and people think it is caused by a graphics driver bug. Do you have any ideas or soultions? I have updated the latest Photoshop and system updates.
Here is some information about my system:

I think that the Video Card Drivers for your pc seems to be culrpit here.
Check the model of your video card in device manager and go to the Vendor websites like NVIDIA or ATI.
Download and install the most recent drivers and it should fix the issue for you!

  • ITunes User Feature Suggestions

I think it would be beneficial for Apple and the users to have a dedicated thread
for User based feature suggestions ,So with this in mind I hope you add this as a sticky or ad this as a category all it's own .

A built in album art/pdf. viewer : As Music makes it's change more and more over to digital distribution artists are making the art/packaging available in.pdf and ,or embed in the mp3's themselves however the user "experience" in this is laking .
A built in viewer for the "digital booklets " and embedded art would add that missing streamlined sexy appeal we mac users are missing and accustomed to .

  • Keyword Bugs and Some Keywording Improvement / Feature Suggestions

Tagging Bugs and Some Improvement / Feature Suggestions
Please excuse where I should use the word Tag or Keyword or vice versa!
    1.       BUG?    If a tag synonym is added or changed then all affected photos should be marked for re-publish.  I do not think this currently happens.   Should this possibly be considered a bug?
    2.       BUG?    When viewing a smart collection in a Flickr publish service and a new tag is added to a photo it is correctly moved to the “requires re-publish” section.   However … the thumb selection in the grid moves to the next photo, the loop view remains on the photo just tagged and the key wording still reflects the just tagged photo.    The selection shown in the grid appears to be wrong.      When working quickly this can result in tagging errors as the user looking on the grid believes he is working on the next highlighted photo in the grid.      This is surely a bug?
    3.       BUG?      A minor point and I realise this is probably not the correct way to do things … but a double word synonym entered with quotes for example “Ice Climbing” will create two tags “Ice” and “Climbing” at the flicker end of things.    Removal of this synonym and forcing a re-publish does not delete these two tags at the flicker end of things.    I may have miss-understood, but perhaps it is best for LR not to allow quoted tags?
    4.       SUGGESTION      An easier and more powerful way to review tagging of current photos should be provided whereby it is possible to clearly see the current tagging of a photo and have immediate access to the keyword list at the same time to make corrections.    Having both the Keywording and Keyword List panels open in Library mode results in a lot of up and down scrolling for me and is a slightly inelegant UI in my opinion.   I would suggest it should at very least be possible to have the tags viewable in Loop info as an option - so long as no truncation is made and all tags visible.    Ideally a better way should be sought.
    5.       SUGGESTION      It would be very useful when reviewing tagging to select to show all photos in the currently selected folder or set which do not contain the selected tag.    Note, I don’t think this can be easily achieved by using a keyword filter and selecting all keywords and unselecting the tag of interest as the pictures may have many tags.    The same might be performed by textual based searches but this is inelegant and its slowness precludes a browsing approach.     For example – for me it would be useful to look at all my mountain shots in a trip which have not been tagged with “Glacier” and it will be immediately visually apparent where I need to make tagging corrections.    I would suggest a “Not” checkbox is made available on the top of each column in the library filter – this may also provide a great deal of power for other situations.
    6.       SUGGESTION      It would be useful to allow a means of showing all pictures with a certain tag but which have not been tagged yet with any children of said tag.   For example all pictures tagged with Glacier which I have not yet named the glacier by introducing a relevant child tag or selecting an existing child tag.    A similar situation occurs for wildlife and potentially many other scenarios … I would like to use a tag “Butterfly” which I can quickly use on my first pass… and then do the identification and child tagging on a second pass using appropriate filtering.   This allows for a step wise or “top down” approach to tag classifying things in a workflow.    I appreciate this can be achieved (as I do now) by using a child tag called “Unnamed butterfly” or “Unnamed Glacier” but it seems more powerful, elegant and generically applicable to be able to filter on a “not tagged with a child” basis.
I apologise if I have missed the point on some existing functionality on any of these points and welcome any suggestions.

    This is a great post.
I couldn't have written it myself better.
I'm also in dying need of Korean input as I can't communicate with my Korean friends.
    But I second every point.
I hope the tech teams are reading this.

  • Field/Iris blur bug?

If I create a generic solid black shape on a new transparent layer, and then apply say 20px field blur and 20px iris blur, then I start to see a white glow from the object. (no bokeh is on by the way)
It's as if photoshop is pretending as if the shape is on a white layer instead of a transparent one.
Is this a bug or am I misunderstanding what field blur and iris blur actually do?

    anistropic wrote:

The raster shape really is surrounded by white fully transparent pixels and the Blur Gallery filter is blending the white with the colour of the shape.
After you initially create the shape pixel layer, do Layer > Layer Mask > From Transparency to make the pixels fully opaque and extract the transparency into a mask. Disable the mask to see the white surrounding the shape. Fill the entire layer with the shape's colour. Enable the mask or apply the mask to make coloured fully transparent pixels. Now the Blur Gallery will not make a white halo.
Realize that if you apply a mask rather than just enable it, and save the document, then the next time Photoshop opens the document, the fully transparent pixels will contain white.
Is this a bug or am I misunderstanding what field blur and iris blur actually do?
You are not misunderstanding these filters. The Gaussian Blur filter, for example, cleverly avoids the white halo problem, so hopefully the developers will implement a similar improvement to the Blur Gallery.

  • Feature request: Better tool for organizing image files

    Hi all,
I'm considering rearranging the directory structure of my photo library completely (for a number of reasons: new cameras, a new variety of tools on new PCs).
I would like to reorganize my photos into a year\month directory structure and that will basically spread all my image files into new locations.
I have searched quite a bit and the advices I have seen don't seem to work:
    (1) Moving the files outside LR is fairly easy (using exiftool) but I cannot make LR link to the files automatically in their new locations. And doing it manually with "Locate file" or "Find missing folder" is not practical due to the large number of files and large number of new locations.
    (2) Moving the files with LR tools is also not practical: Manually dragging the photos into the new directory structure will take forever, and the only automatic rename feature I know of is "Rename Files ..." cannot move the photos into new directories (it can, however, assign names from the file dates and other metadata).
Now my feature suggestion: Either make it possible for LR to automatically relink files that have been scattered into a new directory structure or - better yet - make it possible for LR to perform such auto-organize operations.
My mp3 manager (MediaMonkey) is a good example to follow: It can organize (move or copy) any number of music files into any directory structure built from the audio file's metadata (such as my standard audio directory structure: Music\<Artist>\<Album>\<Track#:2> - <Title>).
Interestingly, the LR "Rename file" function can almost do it already; it just cannot move the file into a new directory.
Or can this be done in a way I haven't discovered?

Sorry if I might be stating the obvious (but at least I was such a *dummy* once that I needed this explicitely):
In order to move the sequence of images per drag&drop in grid view you need to
Put the sort order in the bottom toolbar to "user order" (toggle visibility with letter T if not displayed)
Grab an image from within its thumbnail, not from its border-cell.
When you move around you see a vertical black thick line wandering in between images where you would be able to drop it
Put the images first into a collection in case they should be spread across multiple folders.
This is the reason why most often from a filter result you cannot re-arrange.
Still sometimes it does not work as I want, but can *be persuaded*, i.e. I repeat the same trial after first moving to another collection, then return back. I can't nail it down sufficiently to file a bug.
For an automated sorting according to filename (chosse that setting finally in toolbar) you could rename the photos in place, without exporting & re-importing. Just select them and hit <F2> to bring up the renaming dialog like possible during import.
+1 vote from me, as I am neither satisfied with the responsiveness of moving folders within LR e.g. from laptop hard disk to NAS.
Apart from that I try not to build much on my folder structure, just break them into manageable quantities and have a quick "diary-overview" by using naming convention "YYYY-MM-DD description of event" (pictures of up to 4 cameras go inside, unique filenames for Canons achieved by renaming during import). For all the rest I prefer to build (smart) collections.

  • Feature Request: Export catalog for 2nd editor/machine

Since there isn't a shared network environment for LR, to involve multiple editors or multiple locations for the same editor on large projects, I often need to export a subset of a catalog so someone else can work on it, or I can work on it off my laptop somewhere other than the studio, using only the proxy 1:1 previews to make my decisions from and then re-assimilate those edit changes to the master catalog of that job, usually back on my primary workstation.  This process also allows me to start processing out parts of the job while other parts are being edited on other machines, or letting my primary workstation process while I use a 2nd workstation to continue editing at speed on.
I can make this happen, but it's all on me to remember which portions of the catalog have been exported, where their destination was/is, remember not to make any changes to that portion of the library while the subsection has been exported, and an over-lengthy and complicated merging of exported and internal catalogs.
It would be incredibly useful if LR could show the status (checked out for primary edit, checked out for client approval, etc.) of any exported catalog by mousing over that visibly different section and build in a preference for those varied conditions to potentially limit any changes to that subset of images while the export is still 'checked-out.'  A true merge would be nice to allow possible overlaps of work on the same images, but a managed lock-out would be sufficient to start with.
As it is, the re-assimilation process for me involves removing images from the master catalog leaving the raw files in place, and re-importing the exported catalog which also necessitates the needless redundancy of bringing the 1:1 previews back in as well.  At the scale I'm doing this it's overly time consuming, compared to the speed of just bringing in the library itself.  The process also puts me in the place of deleting images from a catalog while they're essentially still in use, which is scary from a file management standpoint, usually with me having 4 and 5 copies of that library lingering around until all the manual merging actions are finished.

That's a feature I've asked for myself Brad, in the absense of true network use.  As it's not likely to make the final release, and we wouldn't want the request to get lost in beta land, might I suggest adding it as a suggestion on the Feature Request forum http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family where it can easily be tracked?  If you post the link to your request here, others can also vote on your request.

  • Backlighting Feature Suggestions?

Where the heck is the iPod feature suggestion area?
There definitely needs to be separate backlighting controls/timing for running on battery power and running on AC/DC/USB power.
Powered example: when I'm plugged into my car connection, which is powered, I want to be able see the display. Would be nice to do that without scrolling through the menu everytime. The display is impossible to read dark.
Battery example: when the iPod is in my pocket, backpack or whatever running on battery power, it doesn't need to remain backlit long. I can't see it anyway.
Seems like options to set for each type of power would be useful to most users.
I primarily listen in my car and via the home stereo. I rarely run on battery power/headphones.

I don't want to have to manually set the backilight setting for whatever condition I am using the iPod. It should be smart enough to know when it is connected to a power source and when it is not.
When it is connected to a power source I want the opition to set it to "Always On" and when I am on battery I want it to automatically set to a specified amount of time (i.e 5 seconds).
I also like the option of having it cycle on for a few seconds when the song changes.

  • Have plan feature H.264 Encoding for Cameras on Mobile?

Have plan feature H.264 Encoding for Cameras on Mobile?
    Thank you

Generally speaking H264 is supposed to be about twice as efficient as MPEG2. I think that's probably overstating the case somewhat (i.e. H264 isn't really twice as "good"). However you can certainly cut back somewhat from what you'd use with MPEG2.
Next consideration is the resolution/dimension of the final video. Do you want to go 640x480 (NTSC 4:3 aspect ratio) or something smaller? Since you're starting with video tape I'd suggest something like 480x360 (that should be large enough by a good margin to get all of the quality from a video tape). However, you might even want to drop down to 320x240 since that would be compatible with the video iPod and potentially other mobile, hand-held devices.
Finally, if you go with 640x480 I'd suggest something in the 3Mb to 4Mb per second range (for relatively demanding material, less for so-called "talking heads," and perhaps a bit more for extreme action), that would scale to 1.7Mb to 2.3Mb per second for 480x360, and 750Kb to 1Mb per second for 320x240. If you plan on using Front Row and want to store your video on a remote server (accessed either wirelessly or over ethernet) then you will definitely want to enable the "streaming" option when you encode the video. In fact you may want to use the streaming option in every case (for future compatibility).
If you plan on viewing this video on a computer display or any type of LCD or high-definition device you may also want to consider a de-interlace step for the 640x480 and 480x360 resolutions. You won't need that for the 320x240 video since 240 is exactly one half of the vertical resolution for standard NTSC DV (720x480). However, if you're using PAL you'll need to adjust all of the above resolutions to fit the proper form factors.
As always, the beauty will be in the eye of the beholder. Thus I'd suggest that you try something near the above and adjust accordingly (based upon what you see and like or dislike).
