Feature Suggestions - Editable Rounded Corners, Text Columns....

Hi there, I think the new features in PS CS6 are awesome, I've been playing with it all day, however there are a few things I think are missing:
Editable rounded corners.
I should be able to edit the radius of my rounded corners, after I have drawn my rectangle, same as in illustrator.
Text columns.
It would be awesome to be able to creat text columns similar to illustrator and indesign, this would make laying out text in my web designs much much easier!!!!
Column guides.
There should be a tool which lets you set the width of your layout and tell it how many columns you want and what spacing you want to use and it generate the guides for you, similar to the guide guide plugin for cs4. This again would really help when It comes to starting up a new design!
Apart from that, massive improvements, well done Adobe.
Not sure on the dark interface tho, reminds me of Microsofts feeble atempt at a design program.......*shudder*!!!!!!

Yea I know, was just saying what it reminded me of, I think people are starting to use dark themes to 'rebel' against the norm but just because it is different doesn't necessarily mean it's good, I'll give it a go for a while tho, see if I can get used to it.

  • Round corners missing

    I'm part way through a problem that may yet be resolved by re-RIPping a PDF. But I thought I'd raise it anyway in case
    there's an explanation.
    I have placed images behind round cornered text frames and applied the round corners to the images at the point where
    they coincide with the corners of the frames (that is, two corners rounded, two corners square) by placing a round
    cornered image in a frame and then cropping the frame on one side to cut the corners square.
    That has worked without problems. But in one frame I only wanted one corner of each image to be rounded, and there
    wasn't enough spare on each image to crop the frames. So, using the pen tool I added a node either side of each rounded
    corner I wanted to square off, then dragged the nodes to coincide with the real corner node, and it squared the corners OK.
    So I have images which have been set to have rounded corners, but three of the corners have been edited back to squared
    off. The fourth, rounded, corner then coincides with the rounded corner of a text frame above.
    This all looks fine on the PDF. But on the RIPped proof, the rounded corner has gone, and I'm seeing an "ear" of the
    squared-off picture behind the rounded text frame. Both pictures appear like this.
    I'm suspicious that it's only the images that I have doctored the corners on that do this. But the PDF looks OK.
    I've re-made the PDF and I'm waiting for a new proof. But I wondered whether anyone can suggest an explanation - if
    indeed it's anything more than a glitch on the RIP or at proofing.
    It's gone through an Apogee workflow, by the way.
    k

    You could save yourself a whole lot of grief, I think, if you selectively rounded just the corners you choose using the corner effects sample script.
    If you need different rounding on different corners (as I used to do for one client) you can select the frame path and add a node either side of the corner, then delete the corner node itself and drag the control handles of your new nodes along the vertical or horizontal axis to make pretty much any curve at all.

  • Show size of rounded corners in Appearance palette

    Hi,
    I often use the Rounded Corners effect on objects, and I think it would be useful to see the size of the rounded corners in the Appearance palette. That is, it would be nice to see it automatically, without having to click on "Round Corners" to open up the Round Corners dialog box. The strokes tool shows the width of the stroke in the Appearance palette, so why not Rounded Corners?
    Thanks!

    I first tried it in a text frame. Now when I do a 'paste into' in an image frame it seems to work, but now I have an extra frame in my workflow
    Table => text frame => image frame with rounded corners => text frame
    Ideal would be:
    Table => text frame with rounded corners => text frame
    But I am starting to believe that this is not possible in InDesign (since it moves the table in the frame)
    Now I will try to figure out if my Excel links will still survive in InCopy with the image frame option.

  • Table with rounded corners in CS5?

    I am dealing with an issue, I need a table with 2 rounded top-corners. The top row is a shade of black (and needs the 2 rounded corners.
    Here is what I do:
    I make my table with a regular straight angled top-row in it's own text-frame. Then adjust the frame to the table (cmd-alt-c). Select the arrow selection tool, cut the text-frame with the table. Then create a new text-frame with 2 rounded top corners. Then past the table into this new frame.
    What now happens is that the table does not snap to the 0 point of the new frame, but it insets on the left side. When I make it align right it does it the other way around. Plus the part of the top-frame with the shade of black does not cut of on the rounded part of the frame.
    I know another option is to create a text-frame with the rounded corners on exactly the size I need it in the table, and then paste this into the top frame of the table (making sure the inset is 0). But I would like to use this as a last resort.
    We have a preference for the first option I wrote about, since we are linking Excel files and then creating InCopy content. (If a table is not placed in a seperate text frame and then linked to the floating text, InDesign loses the link to the Excel.)
    Is this at all possible? From this site it seems it is ( http://www.justskins.com/forums/table-with-rounded-corners-117551.html )

  • Rounded corners on text frames in FrameMaker...

    First, thank you.
    Does anybody know if there is a way to put "rounded corners" on text frames?
    Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Other than with the graphic tools, FM doesn't cleanly support RRs, such as for tables, text frames, or frame generally. Some other WP/DTP apps do.
    In a prior career I had to use drawn or imported RRs in-frame during a fleeting period when the enterprise styleguide demanded it. It was replaced by rectangles shortly thereafter, but they also switched to pallid pastels and an illegible core font, just to sustain the pain.
    I predict that by the time FM gets comprehensive RR capability, the art directors of the world will have decided that the corners really need to be hyperbolic arcs, with drop shadows, central radial gradients and a subtly throbbing glow.

    When we are downloading the 'Top Queries by Month' or 'Top Queries by Day' report, while we see numbers in 'Total Queries' and '% of all queries' columns, we are not finding anything in 'Query Text' column, its empty. Not sure while the analytics is
    not able to fetch/report the 'Query Text' itself - the report doesnt make any sense without 'Query Text' information.
    Is there anything in the web part markup I pasted above- is any of the property value is affecting this?
    Or it can be some configuration/error with the logging/analytics process?
    Please suggest. Thanks in advance.

  • [Solved] How to force enable rounded corners in a theme on GNOME 3.16

    Hello
    I just recently started using arch (and I regret why didnt I use it earlier -.-, such a great OS). I put up Gnome 13.16.2 as my desktop environment particularly because I like its interface (rounded corners, the ui etc. Kinda reminds me of my fav mobile OS MIUI).
    And I can see that most of the themes (almost all that I have installed infact) like to remove rounded corners and give a flat rectangle. Is there some way to force rounded corners by editing the theme? I did had a look at gnome-shell.css of theme and the "panel" portion of it didnt had any such part (or atleast I couldn't find it). Some help would be appreciated, really want those rounded corners as well as the theme.
    Here's the gnome-shell.css from that theme btw:

    The file looks like malformed XML (malformed, because it's missing quotes around the attributes, closing tags, etc.). If it's supposed to be proper XML, the right way would be to fix it and use an XML parser in your favorite scripting language to load it, read the other file, and alter the data systematically.
    xmllint in the libxml2 package may be useful for checking XML syntax and reformatting.
    If you know Python then you could probably use the xml.dom.minidom or one of the other standard XML libraries.
    If it is in the format posted then the following script should do what you want, or at least provide a starting point. It's not the most efficient approach but it seems to do the trick.
    #!/usr/bin/env perl
    use strict;
    use warnings;
    open (my $fh1, '<', $ARGV[0]) or die "failed to open $ARGV[1]";
    open (my $fh2, '<', $ARGV[1]) or die "failed to open $ARGV[2]";
    my %user_ips;
    foreach my $line (<$fh2>)
    my ($user, $ip) = split /,/, $line, 2;
    chomp $ip;
    $user_ips{$user} = $ip;
    my $old_xml;
    local $/;
    $old_xml = <$fh1>;
    my $new_xml = $old_xml;
    while ($old_xml =~ m/(<accessControl\s.*?<\/accessControl>)/sg)
    my $old_ac = $1;
    my ($user) = ($old_ac =~ m/inRealm='([^']+)/);
    my $new_ip = $user_ips{$user};
    my $old_ip = quotemeta "0.0.0.0";
    my $new_ac = $old_ac;
    $new_ac =~ s/$old_ip/$new_ip/;
    $old_ac = quotemeta $old_ac;
    $new_xml =~ s/$old_ac/$new_ac/;
    print $new_xml;
    close($fh1);
    close($fh2);
    Now, if we lay down in the grass and remain very quiet, a wild sed wizard may appear to amaze us with a glorious, arcane one-liner. Remember, if he appears, avoid sudden movements. If you startle him, his expression will break and he'll slink off muttering something about it having worked a minute ago.
    p.s. I haven't touched Perl in ages. I almost miss it.
    Almost.

  • IWeb sites are slow to upload. text columns turn to heavy png files

    Hi!
    Yes I've noticed that iweb sites for some odd reason are slower to load on any browser. No matter what the hosting is. I use Me.com for a few years and iWeb as I don't have the time or patience to bother with Dreamweaver. I use Me.com for hosting as well as another web hosting server. If there is graphic material on the page, it takes so long to open. Apple must do something about it for sure.
    The program iWeb itself doesn't open up fast enough if you have more than 3 pages on it (which any normal site would have). I'm glad Apple made good changes in iWeb09, but it needs to do something about the speed of the program, the sites it makes and how it processes simple matter on it.
    Even though, I have come across some good examples of iWeb made sites that are easy and relatively faster to open or they open at a normal speed. The authors also have used flash material on their iWeb sites. I have a non-registered program (web site Maestro) that claims to ease up and streamline the graphic and other heavy content on a iWeb site to make it lighter with loading.
    But the unregistered version works on 70 percent files only. And I don't really notice any difference with it either. So I'm doubtful of buying the full version.
    Any thoughts? Solutions? Would really appreciate.
    ANOTHER ISSUE that I have discovered while making iWeb site is that a text column put on a shape after publishing turns into a heavy PNG picture file that can weight almost upto 1 whole megabyte!!!
    And you keep wondering why the darn page is so slow to open!!! Cuz a simple text could've been just about 50kb. But it turns into a 900kb picture in png!!! Is there a way to change this?? I guess, taking out the picture from the published site folder and reediting it in - say - Photoshop reducing its size may help. But its so cumbersome and arduous to go into every darn folder and open all the text now converted into pics and re-edit them!! And then their reduced quality will make the text look feeble and bad quality too.
    This is a problem that APPLE iWEB experts Must work on. iWeb gives a certain flexibility as its like a free flowing canvas. But then its also a known fact that iWeb sites are exceptionally heavier to open, unless you know many other tweaks here and there to make it work right. But again, this is contrary to the purpose of iWeb, cuz its made for amateur site makers.
    I wish there is a work around this thing really.
    ANY SUGGESTIONS FRIENDS?? WOULD LOVE TO HEAR. PLEASE SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS AND SOLUTIONS.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Nitesh

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Shapes by their very nature are graphic elements that end up a png file whether there's text in them or not. You should try adding the text in a text box above the shape and see if there's any difference. Just be sure to use a Web Safe Font and not add any enhancements that will turn it into a image file:
    Click to view full size
    You may not notice a difference with loading with WSM but those with Internet Explorer should. Have you tested your site with and without WSM on a PC?
    In WSM you can set the amount of optimizing for graphics. I've set it at about 60% (moderate) and haven't tested other settings for image quality. I'm sure a lower quality level, i.e. more compression, will have a impact on file loading. I just don't have a feel for the greatest amount of compression that will still have acceptable image quality. You'll just have to experiment.
    If your site is a commercial site then using a commercial hosting server is the best option. Also, it's reported that using a Text Based Navbar instead of iWeb's java based one will help dark side compatibility.
    Be sure to put in feature requests for the improvements that you see necessary to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iweb.html.

  • How do I keep round cornered boxes when opening CS4 to CS4

    I produce a lot of forms which have round cornered boxes within the text boxes, when opening these indesign CS4 files into CS5 the boxes lose all but one of the round corners. The only fix I can see is to manually adjust the boxes within CS5. Is there an easier way? or will an update improve this. I find this very frustrating as I only have about 700 forms produced which will all need to be fixed.
    Please help!

    I sympathise, it's exactly the problem with upgrading.  I don't think Adobe cater for the user with 1000's of files very well,
    Well, Stix, I don't think they cater to small users with thousands of files. I'm sure that if my organization was buying hundreds of licenses for the full Creative Suite, and maybe LiveCycle Server, that they might be able to cater to me. But since we're only buying 1 license of the Suite and 4 of InDesign, then the fact that I have an archive of tens of thousands documents in forty languages going back to the early 90s that have to be updated on an intermittent basis, is not really high on Adobe's list of things about which it is important to care. My file management needs, while totally critical to me (and by extension the refugees I serve), aren't going to be that important to Adobe. They don't cater to me, and I can understand this, as I am not a big revenue stream for them.
    Wow, I'm flabbergasted! who knew that I would need to do this??
    However, the fact that it seems that only the forums regulars know  these critical facts is a massive failing on Adobe's part. I fail to  understand why this stuff that we post over & over again isn't  pointed out to the users when they install ID, or when they open a file  that was created in a previous version of ID. Seems like a  mind-numbingly obvious case for one of those little checkboxes that says  "Don't show me this again." Illy seems to handle this without issue.
    my documents are of a style whereby I may need to make changes to two
    words in a document created in Indesign from 2004, are you suggesting
    that I need to keep all versions of Indesign for evermore and only use
    the program that created the document to open/edit? This is a very
    impractical solution.
    As Bob has already pointed out... yeah. It's impractical, but it is also a solution.
    In your shoes, I'd mention to your IT folk that your long-term IT plan should include keeping some old apps around in virtualization; that way when InDesign CS10 reflows your document created with CS6 when you just want to update a logo, you can just boot up your image of Windows 2012 End-Of-The-World-Edition without needing IT to help you out.

  • Rounded corners and dropshadows in CSS

    Hi all,
    Hopefully I am not repeating a similar question. I am trying to redesign my site (with not much luck) in CSS. I want some text/navigation boxes that have rounded corners and drop shadows.  Using CSS do I still need to create the images in an image editor, slice the images and place the appropriate sections of the image in divs to get this effect (much like using tables)?
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

    Like Nancy mentioned, the border-radius properties are not supported in older browsers, particularly IE6, which some of us still worry about. I'm not sure about the support in IE7, but I still design with IE6 in mind. In fact, I have never upgraded my IE browser since version 6, so I keep it on my computer for testing purposes.
    In deciding whether to use new css features is deciding whether you are willing to leave IE6 behind. I emailed Simon Collison about this topic a couple of weeks ago. He wrote two very good books about CSS, Beginning CSS and CSS Mastery. The latter book was co-written with Andy Budd.
    Here's what Simon said:
    "There are so many conflicting views that you really need to think about your target audiences and decide based on that. Will you upset just two or three percent of people, or twenty/thirty percent by not serving for IE6?
    "We use stats to discover the portion of users using IE6 and make a unique decision for each project.
    "In all honesty, I think it is too early to abandon IE6. We work for clients in the real world, with lots of users locked into using IE6 thanks to over-zealous, outdated IT teams/experts who won't let them upgrade or use Firefox etc."
    When I mentioned to Simon that some of the css features he used in his book were not supported in IE6, he responded:
    "In a book like CSS Mastery, you have to forget older browsers and look at the future, and cool, exciting techniques. If we wrote that book so everything worked in IE6, it'd be a dull book, and would not have advanced CSS usage."
    Most of us are itching to use the latest features of CSS but we need to design for users and consider what their experience will be. So, it comes down to this: It's your decision whether you will use CSS that is not supported by some of the older browsers. If you have a fairly sophisticated market that probably upgrades their browsers to the latest versions, then you might choose to go with the latest features.
    My decision is to still style for IE6 (I think it's safe to say that most designers have left IE5 far behind in the dust). These new CSS3 features will look absolutely hideous in IE6.
    There is a technique Simon uses in one of his books that he calls "progressive enhancement." The technique will enable new css features, like rounded corners, to only work in modern browsers and in old browsers, like IE6, visitors will see square corners.
    I think the best technique that most designers still use is to create rounded corner images in your css. Here's an example of a web site showcased in css zen garden that uses rounded corners with a drop-shadow:
    http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=208/208.css
    If you right-click on the rounded corners and look at the background images, here's what you see:
    For the header: http://www.csszengarden.com/208/top.jpg
    Main content: http://www.csszengarden.com/208/right_bottom.gif
    Side bar: http://www.csszengarden.com/208/left_bottom.gif
    CSS Zen Garder invites designers to download the css file from these sites so you can learn from it.
    By the way, the second edition of CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions is due out in a couple of weeks.

  • Cropping Pics so they have "rounded" corners

    I have Photoshop Elements 4 for Mac and need to "edit" some photos to make the corners "rounded" in lieu of the regular rectangular, square cornered shape. I'm a 'beginner' with some of the more advanced features of the application, have played with the "tools" (including the "rounded rectangular" shape tool, but still can't get a final product with the rounded corners. I found a website where a person who uses the PC version gave a step by step way to do it, but, unfortunately, one of the key steps uses some feature that apparently is on the PC version only.
    Help! Thanks.

    Thanks to everyone for their input. I will definitely try this. I just came back from 3 weeks in France with about 5,000 digital pics. Quite a few of the pics taken with my Nikon wide-angle-soom lens have some vignetting (dark corners) because the high-end camera store I bought my equipment from sold me a filter that caused the problem (the filter "ring" is causing the vignetting). So, to fix some of these photos, I need to round the corners to remove the dark areas. If I crop using a rectangular shape, it removes too much of the photo's subject matter.
    Re. Barbara's inquiry about what I found online that doesn't seem applicable to the Mac version has something to do with "contract" and "paths" features. It may have been that these things are applicable to the full blown Photoshop, but I can't find that website at the moment to recheck what I did find there. In any event, I'll try the above suggestions which are very much appreciated. ;-)

  • Settingup rounded corners background image

    I need some help in setting up a background image that is in three pieces. Its a rounded corners background that will have text overlay in top rounded corner section, regualr text in middle area, and footer text in bottom rounded corners area. I will ahve two of these side by side.
    So if I had a tables layout, it would be 2 column 3 rows. One rounded conrer set for each column.
    I think Ive seen a tutorial on this somewhere but cant seem to find it. Thank you for any suggestions or pointers.
    p.s. Im trying to use css for this. I tried laying out with tables, but there is a white gab in between each image. I know tables are considered taboo, so Im trying to steer away from them if possible.

    The button tab is kinda correct, but IM not looking for buttons, Im looking for an actual text box with rounded corners. I was trying to cut up the rounded corner box so I can insert a paragraph or two of text in it and not have to used a large solid image as background.
    Hope this clarifies. Ill try to look for a site that has this in place and post a link back.

  • Anchored graphics in margin intruding into text column

    I am creating what is basically a textbook chapter, two columns of text and a wide margin away from the spine. I am positioning some notes in the margin, but also some graphics. Some of the graphics need to be big enough that they intrude into the text column and the text needs to wrap around them. Have done this manually and happy with the results, but would like to have at least some of these graphics anchored to the text. Learning to do this was a long and painful process, and I thought I should document my findings, and ask for any suggestions for improvement.
    I found the two following posts of particular use:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/wrapping-text-around-an-anchored-object.php
    http://blogs.adobe.com/indesignchannel/2007/11/anchored_frames_productivity_s.html
    However, the free tool mentioned in the last post is no longer available.
    Here is what I did.
    First, I set up a couple of keyboard shortcuts.
    Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Text and Tables > Insert Anchored Object/Go to Anchor Marker > Alt+Shift+I
    Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Object Menu > Fitting: Fit Frame to Content > Alt+Shift+F
    Next, I set up defaults for inserting anchored objects. Note that these preferences are saved in the file, and not in the Preferences.
    (make sure nothing is selected) Object > Anchored Object > Insert (Defaults) > Leave defaults except:
    - Object Style: SAR Topics Anchored Graphic (or whatever Object Style you wish; mine includes a word-wrap)
    - Position: Custom
       - Relative to Spine
       - Anchored Object  Reference point: top-left and top-right
       - Anchored Position  Reference Point: mid-left and mid-right
       - X Relative To: Page Edge X Offset -3p0
       - Y Relative to: Line (baseline) Offset 2p0 (needed as anchored position ignores the wordwrap when you enlarge the frame to fit objects that intrude into the text frame)
       - Check “Keep Within Top/Bottom Column Boundaries”
    I suggest as you are trying this, doing the following until at least you're sure that things are working correctly:
    - To view the anchor markers in the text, choose Type > Show Hidden Characters.
    - To view a dashed line from an anchor marker to its associated custom-positioned object, select the object and choose View > Extras > Show Text Threads. The thread extends from the anchor marker to the current proxy point for the anchored object.
    Place your text cursor where you want your anchored graphic to anchor.
    Press Alt+Shift+I.
    A default 6p0 x 6p0 frame should appear in the margin.
    Click on the graphic you wish to put into the anchored frame. Right-click and copy.
    Select the frame in the margin.  Right-click and "paste into."
    Press Alt-Shift-F and this will fit the frame to the graphic.
    This seems to be a reasonably fast and effective workflow.
    If anyone has any suggestions for improvement, please let me know.
    I do have one problem: when I was playing around with this, InDesign crashed, and the file I was trying to do this on is now corrupted and my Alt+Shift+F won't work; the frame won't resize to fit the graphic. I tried trashing my preferences, but then found out the Insert Anchored Object defaults are stored in the file on which I was working, not the actual two InDesign preferences files.

    Luckily I had a recent backup of my file so restored it and got rid of the corruption I mentioned above.
    Ran into another apparently unsurmountable problem, as described below, and have abandoned anchored graphics for this project.
    If you have two columns on a left page, where the margin is on the far left, anchored objects with wordrap don't work if your anchor is in the second column. That's because ALL of the text in the left column is "before" the anchor, and ignores the anchored object's wordwrap.
    Until this is fixed, I'm abandoning anchored graphics and will place them all manually.
