Featured Request with psd layered files

Photoshop Layered files that include alpha channel show the alpha channel visually in aperture thumbnails and previews. They usually look like white or black masks around the subject.
This is a very undesirable feature. What is needed is the ability to ignore the alpha channel. This was done in iView several years ago when I was using that as my database. The software team in iView was able to quickly, in their next version, to add an ignore alpha channel check box, which eliminated seeing the alpha channels.
I hope the aperture team will consider this as a very necessary feature. Layered psd files are just as important as raw files to many photographers. I hate using more then one database to manage my files.
How many of you guys and gals out there are interested in this feature??? I personally consider this a very important feature for many photographers using a database type program like aperture.

Theoretically, yes, but this doesn't actually always work.
Despite Photoshop saving a composite preview, Apple's photoshop-reading routine also reads the alpha channel, and renders an alpha-masked version of the composite in Aperture, Preview, etc. This is true whether the alpha channel is visible/applied in the Photoshop document or not (ie, you can use quickmask to create a selection, save that selection, then have it turned off in your channels pallet, and it'll still get applied as an alpha mask to the complete flattened composite that Adobe provides, by Apple's photoshop/psd reading routines).
The only workaround that I'm aware of for this, is to create an empty alpha mask as the highest-level alpha channel in any document that has alpha channels (visible or not). Select your RGB channels, create a new channel, select it, select all and delete, then drag it to the position directly below the RGB channel set, save, and then Aperture will display the image properly.

  • How does Motion Handle PSD Layered Files?

I've done an extensive search on the Discussions looking for an answer to my problem without luck.
I have a layered file created in Illustrator CS. I exported the file to Photoshop so that I could retain the layers. The file opens and looks normal in PS. I want to import this file into Motion 2.0 so that I can animate some of the layers. The PSD file is in CYMK mode as Photoshop will not allow files to be saved as layers in RGB. Motion allows me to import the PSD layered file as individual layers but all of the text and graphics come in yellow and seem to have lost their original color. I have set PS File Handling to Highest.. If I flatten the file it looks fine in Motion but I lose the layers. Does anyone have any suggestions or methods that could help me?
    Thank you..

I just created a RGB Photoshop file and added several layers, and saved it.
I used the import command from the File menu, and brought the file in with individual layers -- again saved in RGB.
Why won't your PS version allow you to save in RGB?

  • Feature Request: AME Watch Folders file type filter

    Hi,
maybe I'm posting it to the wrong forum. If so, maybe some moderator can move this thread to the correct forum.
I'm exporting Quicktime Reference files from Avid, which creates two files: .mov and. wav. Since I'm exporting it to Watch Folder AME automatically converts the wav also. But would be useful to "tell" AME only convert files with mov extension. It's of course possible later to erase encoded sound files but would be convinient to point out only the file types which require converting.
    thank you,

  • Freezing Finder with PSD/TIF files - HELP!

    Hello everyone,
First of all, I am pretty much ******. I've invested over 2400€ for my brand new Imac and now, out of nothing, my finder in Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.4 starts to hang/freeze whenever I get into the folder with large PSD/TIF files.
It started with large TIF files. I have placed them along with other PSD projects and they range about 50-300MB each. These files are in a specific project folder. Now I get into the folder, and it doesn't matter how I view it. Either in list or symbol view. I scroll down, bam! Pizza of death or wheel of death, and no, I am not able to force quit the finder.
I am like what the ****..?! I just swapped over to the Mac. I just fell the love of the Mac slogan: "It just works". Yeah, I can feel it..
I've installed Xee image viewer before, deleted it again, no change. I even deleted Norton Anti Virus, no change, problem still exist. I've been up till around 5AM with no sleep, trying to figure out what has caused this problem. I think loosing it. I googled like mad, but there were no significant solutions.
HOWEVER, if I start up Pathfinder, and go to the projects folder, I can seamlessly view all project files PSD/TIF within the Finder and quicklook. It wont hang OSX. This is my current solution... but I don't want to use PathFinder all the time, just to get to my projects folder.
I really need your help. (x_x)
    Thanks

Wow, that was a fast response, thank you.
I did remove Norton after the incidence, and yet, the problem exist.
I used to open my project files with Photoshop CS5. Before I open anything, I browse through my project data within the Finder, i.e list view + quick view, I just scroll up and down within the window to check out the data name before I open it.
Everything works just fine. I used to use Xee image viewer and I can literally open and view any image. But as soon the files get larger in size, and the more files I got in one folder - like 100+, the more it was likely, that my Finder hangs. And it still does.
It starts to freeze immediately within seconds or when I scroll down more and there it goes, spinwheel goes nuts and I have to restart my Imac (omg). I did that like 8-10 times now. I left my Mac on when I went to bed for 2h, and after I checked it again, the spinwheel didn't do anything then spin and I could not quit Finder. Everything hangs.
All I need to do, is to open my Projects folder, and boom, freeze. I thought it was due to the large TIF files. I deleted them via Adobe Bridge, because I can't go to that folder with Finder, otherwise it'll freeze AGAIN. Now I had the PSD files left, they are about 50-300MB big, and I got around 100 of them in one folder. Issue still remains.
I deleted almost everything, checked my startup icons and so forth, but I did not have the problem before, or I didn't notice it.
I can however browse lots of PSD files with smaller sizes AND as I mentioned in the above post. I can view my project folder with PATHFINDER and ADOBE BRIDGE with absolutely NO single problem.
I guess it's a Finder-Preview-PSD Extension- etc problem? I got the Mac like a month and now I got this. Gladly no one can tell me I got this issues due to some weird Trojans or "badly configured" computer.

i frankly have no idea how to create a multipart mixed request with boundaries. I get a bad http request error with the above code. Can please someone help me.
    Thanks

Your WriteImage servlet needs to read the image file in from wherever it is (hard drive, database, whatever), then write it back out to the browser. To do that, first use the HTTPServletResponse object to send the appropriate headers, then call the getOutputStream() method to get an output stream to write the data to. This data will be sent to the browser which, if you've set the headers correctly, will display it as an image.
It's been a long time since I did this (we abandoned storing images in databases quite a long time ago), so I can't be more specific than that, but hopefully that'll be enough to get you going. If you run into any problems, reply and I'll see if I can help further.

  • FEATURE REQUEST: Preserve Transparency of Files when Opening As Layers in Photoshop

I am a digital scrapbooker and I have begun using Lightroom to organize my digital scrapbooking supplies.  A file format that is very common in digital scrapbooking is PNG format.  However, PNG is not setup to accept metadata so part of my workflow is converting the PNG files to PSD files to retain the transparency and adding the ability to add metadata.
This works very well for me - when I want to scrapbook, I can search for my supplies by color, etc. and then choose Edit In, etc.  The biggest drawback is that I can't do Edit In > Open As Layers in Photoshop without losing the transparency in the PSD (formerly PNG file).  The transparency is retained when I choose Edit In> Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS5 > Edit Original.
So if you all could do something to preserve the original and still open it as layers in Photoshop, that would be wonderful!
    Kayla Lamoreaux

Another request that goes along with this one - is allowing transparent files to retain their transparency in the Print Module.  I am building storyboards and would love to be able to add a transparent TIF or PSD file on top of photos before printing.
    Thanks!

  • Feature request : import/export .idea files with ITunes

I know that you wants to developp your own cloud system but a possibility to import or export idea files between the mac and the Ipad would be very usefull for me. Thanks

Yes Ma'am you are misunderstanding. In my case, because of a botched screen repare my ipad now has No wireless connectivity at all. The place that replaced the screen is over 70 miles away. Being as unlike Photoshop touch which has the option to sync projects through iTunes. I can not get the vectorized verzions of my Adobe Ideas projects off my device.
It really should be a simple update to the app. Which would be far cheaper for Adobe to implement, than me buying a new ipad. All my other apps that allow me to crreate content allow for itunes syncing of projects.
Then even if my ipad still had wireless connectivity some projects could easily be over the email size limit.
What would really be the ultimate answer to this issue would be on device syncing between Adobe Ideas and Photoshop touch. Just like can be done with Photoshop and Illustrator.
Adobe has to realise that the app market really is more profitable than their computer program market. Being as many many more people WILL pay the smaller price. Which opens up their market to way more customers. Add in the new ipad air's 64 bit architeture, and it's almost (almost not entirely) more advantagous to push the apps to full Adobe master collection status, and ability. It's almost a no brainer, being as it's much mich cheaper for anyone to get an ipad, a good palm canceling stylus and some apps. Than it is to buy a computer, a Cintiq, and Adobe master collection. Oh, but, if after going the cheaper route people got use to using and creating with the apps, they would be far more likely to then get all the more expensive counterparts. Though one has to see that by Wacom putting out their own tablets, the touch screen tablet market is the most cost effective and highest unit moving market.

    Hello Oliver,
I know this is 2 years old, I have a Mac Pro from 2007. I just updated to Lion so I can use Adobe CC software. iCal has been trying to update, or upgrade as it says, and it's showing like it's doing something but it doesn't respond. Have to force quit. It's been 4 days now. I use ical extensively in my business. Any ideas on how to fix that?

  • Feature Request -  use native Windows file browsing dialog

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before. I wasn't able to find anything with a search in the forum, so I'll post it here.
An enhancement request for SQL Developer would be to have it use the native file browsing dialogs in Windows. I'm using Windows 7, and it would be nice to have a native Windows dialog pop up when I go to open or save a file, rather than the ugly (I think) default one, which must be a generic Java file browsing construct. The native dialog would allow it to include all the links to Windows 7 libraries, favorites, and other things like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. if those were installed.
I'd be curious to hear what others think about this idea.
    Thanks,
    Brian

At the risk of starting a Windows/Linux/Mac flame war, or pissing off Java developers, I'm not really into the whole Java write once, run anywhere approach. Particularly when it comes to look and feel. There are merits to cross-platform development when it comes to application functionality, but look and feel is a bit trickier. Windows has specific features that Windows users are used to seeing and using. Mac the same. Linux the same. I think this is especially true when it comes to dealing with the file system. So applications should adjust to the native environment nicely and not introduce elements that don't "fit in". Just MY $0.02. :-)
I'm not a Java developer, but IvanG pointed out that it SHOULD be pretty easy to invoke a native Windows dialog box from Java. That would be my choice.
    Thanks!

  • New feature request -- more flexibility in file management

I'm new to iPhoto and hope someone can help.
I have a large, existing image database (5000+) that I'd like to migrate into iPhoto. I have an established organizational flow where I use a third-party utility to rename my files using the EXIF date as YYYY.MM.DD_000X.JPG (where "X" is a serial number than is incremented automatically). The photos are then organized into a Finder folder hierarchy using YYYY/MM.
If in Preferences I check "Copy files to iPhoto library folder" then iPhoto copies all my files to the "iPhoto Library" folder, doubling the disk space consumed. That's a substantial percentage of my Mac Mini's hard drive capacity! Worse, iPhoto arbitrarily organizes the imported files into year 2000 and year 2005 folders, without creating folders for 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, or 2006. So if I import additional images in the future I have no control over how it will be organized in the Finder. My organizational scheme and workflow are hosed!
If in Preferences I UNcheck "Copy files to iPhoto library folder" then I lose other necessary functionality. For example, if I delete a file in iPhoto the actual file WON'T be deleted from the disk (even after "Emptying the Trash" in iPhoto). I verified this several times. The file structure on the disk and iPhoto's library will get out of synch unless I manually delete in both places, which is unmanageable if you delete a lot of photos! It also wastes disk space.
Can't Apple simply add a "Monitor folders" feature like Photoshop Elements and many other programs have which automatically detects when files are added or deleted from the directory structure the library points to? This would be soooo much better than forcing iPhoto users to live with the kind of frustrating trade-offs described above.
iPhoto is the 3rd or 4th image editing program I've tried over the years. I WANT to like iPhoto because I really like my Mac Mini, but the reality is I may at some point want to move on to something better. If I use iPhoto it appears I either have to live with losing control of my organizational structure or losing basic functionality like having photos deleted from the disk.
Am I missing something here? Is there a workaround so that I can get what I want from iPhoto?
    Thanks!
    Phil
Mac Mini Dual Core   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi Phil
    Welcome to the iPhoto discussions.
First thing to remember is that everything you want to do, all the organisation takes place within the iPhoto window. Ignore what goes on in the iPhoto Library folder, you simply never, ever have to do any work in there. In fact it is strongly recommended that you never touch or change anything there as it will profoundly affect the running of the app.
Given the above, you can import your pics into iPhoto and then Trash your originals. Yes, once you are happy that iPhoto has taken all the pics in, you can throw away your originals, this eliminates the problem of the doubled-up disk space. But, you may ask, what if I want to keep my originals. iPhoto does this for you. If you edit or alter a pic in iPhoto you can always revert to the original as iPhoto keeps the original.
<<So if I import additional images in the future I have no control over how it will be organized in the Finder. My organizational scheme and workflow are hosed!>>
Yes it is, totally done for - because you are not organising the pics in the finder any more, you're organising them in iPhoto.
You can organise pics in just about any way imaginable in iPhoto: by date, by time, by keyword, by ratings by a combination of them all. Want to find the pics taken in June 2003, no problem. Want to find only the pics of your dog taken in June 2003? No problem if you use keywords. Want to find all the pics of your dog that don't have your cat taken any month in 2003 except June? You get the picture.
Drag a folder of pics to the Source pane in iPhoto, it will create an album. You can recreate you current system in iPhoto quite easily, and then improve upon it. Keywords are particularly powerful, as are smart albums. I have a library of over 8,000 pics, and as I import them I add keywords. With a smart album I can find every pic of my daughter that I have, and as I add more they get added to the smart album automatically.
You can still continue to rename your files in whatever way is meaningful to you prior to importing. That doesn't have to change. Just do it prior to importing to iPhoto. The you can use Spotlight to find a pic called 2003.10.23_004.
Or you can just drag it from the iPhoto window to your desktop and it makes a copy - your original is still safe. You can e-mail pics from within iPhoto and so on.
The most important thing to remember is that your organisation is done within iPhoto. It does the heavy lifting.
If anything I've said is unclear, don't hesitate to come back and ask more.
    Regards
    TD

  • Unspported Image format with PSD RGB files

I been using Aperture from the first day it became available. My file are either RAW or PSD files. Lately I have been creating panoramic images in Photoshop and importing them into Aperture. All the images are RGB PSD files. My understanding is that Aperture support these formats, but I have three images that can not be viewed in Aperture. All I get is the Unsupported image Format. I have rebuild my library. Resaved the images, double checked and recheck to make sure the images are RGB, Reinstalled Aperture. Nothing works. Sometimes the image can been seen in Aperture but as I work the images are replaced by the unsupported Image Format error. I would like to published my images to my site and print the image out of Aperture for shows. Any suggestions on how to fix this issues.

How big are the files? It's easily possible to generate Photoshop files that are too big -- e.g. PSB files which can be 2 GB or more in size -- if you are stitching.
Also note you should have "maximize compatibility" turned on in Photoshop -- this saves a flattened layer in the file so it can be properly displayed in Aperture, given Aperture itself doesn't understand the layers. I don't think this latter thing is your issue though.

  • Feature Request - Support for .psb files

So Great if Llightroom would be able to import and recognize Photoshop Large Document File Format (.psb).
My Lightroom database is missing this very important concept.
tiff files larger than 4 GB cannot be saved as .tiff Mac OSX, must either try to save as zip compression tiff files, or use psb files
as working files, but then they cannot be recognized by Lightroom.
Heck why ot add other formats .gif ?
Is there some kind of technical barrier to this?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE really on the psb.

  • Feature Request: save metadata to file, and read metadata from file.

Please have function to save metadata to file, and read metadata from file.
This would allow us to write cross-platform plugins that can assure data is up-to-date in the xmp, or modify xmp and have it reinstated in the catalog.
This would go nicely with the ability to save xmp for virtual copies, dng, and rgb formats.

Perhaps someone with direct experience with publishing to Smugmug will chime in.  Short of that, some thoughts on your issues:
Should I not bother to "Save Metadata to File", this seems to be what is messing up the SmugMug publish service?
I very much doubt that it is messing up the publishing.  What gets saved to the file from the catalog is independent of what gets exported.  Saving metadata to the file is generally a good practice (in case you screw up your catalog backups).  Many, perhaps most, users set the preference Catalog Settings > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.
I would have expected it to behave like an export which would write synonyms, exclude keywords that should be excluded, etc, which seems to work ok in point 6 above.
    Yes, that's a reasonable expectation.
You may have done this already, but double-check: Right-click the Smugmug publishing service in the left-hand column of the Library, select Edit Settings, and in the Metadata section verify that you have Include: All Metadata set.
Did you download the Smugmug plugin from Smugmug? You might try this Smugmug plugin instead -- the author designed the publishing architecture of LR and has an excellent reputation.
Are the publish services more effort than they are worth? So I get SmugMug to work, what happens when I try Flickr?
I think many users find the publishing services are generally worthwhile.  I publish regularly to Flickr (using the built-in Flickr plugin, which isn't completely reliable) and the Zenfolio plugin from Friedl.

  • Possible Bug/Feature Request with Workspace export routine

I ran into a situation today where my apex database server is dieing and I need to get everything off it fast! I need get every workspace and application on it and to my horror I found no way to mass grab the applications for export. This seems like a natural maintaince thing that you would have the option to export the applications with the workspaces but to my amazement, this was not so. Is there a way I can quickly export every application on the server without going into each workspace and exporting app by app? Also would it be possible to update the workspace export in future versions to give a list of applications within the workspace so you could include an export of those applications with the workspace? Were running 3.1.2 here.
