Features/Benefits of Upgrading from Discoverer 10.1.2.1. to 10.1.3.4

Hi all,
We are currently using Discoverer 10.1.2.1 and Oracle Applications 11.5.10. and looking to upgrade Discoverer to 10.1.3.4.
What are the functional features/benefits, differences between these 2 versions of Discoverer?
I have searched around for this information but without much success.
Thanks in advance.
John

  • Useful Benefits of Upgrading From Windows 7 Pro to 10 Pro?

We'll for IT supporting business; for the most part Windows 7 is still far superior to Windows 8.x.Windows 10 will have to make good on the promise of better and more effective security features, getting the touch interface out of our faces and putting the start menu back in place.I've been using Win 10 for some time now and it does look promising, but there are still a lot of bugs in it; bugs that make using it far more hassle than it's worth. Even with all of the current problems, it's still slated to be released at the end of this month. 8.1; like Vista had only a few benefits, which were far overshadowed by it's many drawbacks which made businesses retain Windows XP and 7 by more than 85%. Ultimately, Microsoft still has a lot to prove to its weary customers, so let's hope they deliver this time, or else Windows 7 will follow in...

With our Windows 8.1 systems, the things I noticed as improvements over Windows 7 were:Faster shutdown without frequent hanging apps preventing and delaying PC shutdown and reboot.Better Windows Update experience.Better/faster file transfer/copy with much less issues of slow and failed file copies of large folders and long paths.Desktop search works better/faster.Hyper-V built into the OS can be useful for some people, but may need to be blocked to not facilitate rogue unmanaged VMs on the network.Bitlocker included in Windows 8.1 Pro, but requires Enterprise in Windows 7.May be more stable with in general.
That's all I noticed and can think of off hand.I assume Windows 10 will have at least all the same benefits of Windows 8, but with a more familiar Start Menu. Upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 would require paying for new...

  • Document comparing the benefits to upgrading from version to version

I'm looking for a document that describes the benefits gained for upgrading from one version to the next. We're currently on version 6.0sp1 and I'm interested in getting us on the current version; but need to be able to easily explain what the benefits are.
I have seen quite a few threads talking about getting upgraded to 10gR3; is that the most recent version of the former AquaLogic portal? Is there a newer version that exists in the new 11g release? Or is that one of the many other portal products offered from Oracle?
If any of you have recieved or created a document describing the differences between versions, I'd really appreciate it if you could share the information.
    Thank you,
    Tom

Blog entry from Brian Harrison, the product manager of WCI:
"Should I Upgrade to WCI 10gR3":
    http://blogs.oracle.com/WCI
Surprisingly, this is not an easy question to answer. If you are currently running a version of ALUI 6.5, then there is truly not a great reason for upgrading, because there were not a lot of changes made between ALUI 6.5 MP1 and WCI 10gR3. In fact, we essentially think of WCI 10gR3 as ALUI 6.5 MP2. Here is a list of the primary changes that were made to create WCI 10gR3:
    • New Adaptive Layouts for iPhone
    • New Experience Rule for IP addresses
    • Oracle Branding
    • Removal of license key requirements
    • A few bug fixes across different areas of the products
If one or more of the above items are important, then there may be a good reason to upgrade to WCI 10gR3. However, if the above items are not important, then maybe it isn’t important for you to upgrade quite yet.
On the other hand, if you are currently running a version of ALUI 6.x prior to 6.5, then there are a lot of great reasons for upgrading because there were a lot of new features added between 6.x and WCI 10gR3. The new UI engine called Adaptive Layouts is definitely a very significant improvement as well as the availability of the new Friendly URLs feature. In almost every instance, I would recommend that a ALUI 6.0 or 6.1 customer upgrade to WCI 10gR3.

    Hi Padmanabh
How are you doing the upgrade?
Personally, because you have to use a new weblogic server anyway I would install a clean 11g and then re-apply any preferences. With that done I would export the entire EUL from 10g and import it into the clean 11g. You'll be up and running in no time at all.
There is no need to upgrade the EUL as it is the same in both 10g R2 and 11g.

  • Benefits of upgrade from Projects 11.5.6 to 11.5.9

I'm trying to define the functional benefits for a client organisation of their impending Projects upgrade from 11.5.6 to 11.5.9. Can someone tell me the main benefits of this please?

    Hi,
There is a lot of new functionality added in 11.5.9
That was not included in 11.5.6.
    I can recall the following:
    1. Bugetary Control
    2. Customer Retention Billing
    3. Receipt Accruals
    4. Automatic expenditure batch reversal
    5. There is a web enterface for projects.
    6. You can run your project in any currency
    7. You can run your budget and agreement in any currency
    8. Changes in client extensions. (Transaction Control ect.)
    9. Issue management
    10. Change management (If you use plantype budgets)
If your client do not really need more functionality I would not recommend the upgrade. But most times they want more out of the system.
Is there any specific enhancement they requested?
    Regards
    Matthew

There is no Pro's going thru Windows Server 2008 and then to Windows Server 2012. Extend the schema for Windows Server 2012,
Disable EDNS on Windows Server 2012 DCs if they are not using forwarders for external name resolution, you might want to enable
DES-Only Encryption as this is disabled by default starting with Windows Server 2008 R2, you may also want to disable
SID Resource Compression if any if your applications doesn't support this.

  • Upgrade from iPhoto 5 to 6?

What are the benefits of upgrading from iPhoto 5 to 6? Is it worth the cost?

    BluSky:
If iPhoto is the only iApp that you use the benefits may be marginal depending on your usage and point of view. There are new book designs and a photo calendar you can create and have printed. iPhoto 6 has changed it's folder system to one of having a folder for each roll instead of the date based system (a big improvement IMO) and the capability of using aliases in the library instead of copying the entire file into it. Another plus in my opinion. It is faster.
Some users have had problems with the conversion process and there are steps one can take to minimize the problems. (Always have a backup copy of your original iPhoto Library folder before starting any upgrade or fix). One feature that some consider a negative is that the Homepage capability is no longer built into iPhoto (you can still do it online) and has been replaced with the new iWeb. It's pretty slick but does not interface easily with the previous home pages you might have.
If you also use iDVD or any of the other iApps it's a no brainer, again IMO, as the new iDVD is great. I would have gotten iLife 06 just for iDVD alone.

  • Planning upgrading from t3i

Hey guys!So I've had my t3i for a while and I think I'm hitting the limitations in the t3i in terms of what I'm doing now. I've had the camera for about 1-2 years (was given to me as a xmas gift) and up until now, I've done automotive photography, nature photography, as well as portrait photography. I thought that the T3i was already a good enough camera for me to suit my needs but I realized I might need more now but I'm not sure. One night, I was doing rolling shots with a few buddies of mine and noticed in post processing, that there was a ton of grain in most of the pictures if I turned up the shadows (was shooting in betwen 1/10-1/20th of a second at F8.0 at 3200ISO. What are the benefits of upgrading from a T3i or do I just need a better lens? I was thinking of going to either a T4i or a T5i but at the same time, I want to go for a full frame sensored camera but I don't know if the types of photography I'm doing right now require such an advanced camera such as the 5D MkII  or if the t4i/t5i will be good enough. Also, do the lenses for the T3i work for the 5D MKII or do I have to purchase new lenses for it? I'm guessing the lenses for the T3i are compatible with the T4i and the T5i. Thanks!

If you "turned up the shadows" on these, they were heavily underexposed... which is pretty much guaranteed to make for a ton of noise as soon as you turn it up in post processing. SHOOT RAW AND AVOID UNDEREXPOSURE LIKE THE PLAGUE. To me your sample shots still look a bit underexposed (nore on that in a moment). In fact, it's often better to overexposure your images a little... I use +1/3 stop for 3200 and +2/3 stop for 6400... then pull the image brightness back down in post processing. This minimizes noise, rather than amplifying it. I hope you don't mind... I took one of your images into Photoshop, lightened it a lot and increased the contrast... then applied Noiseware noise reduction (same "formula" that I use with my 7Ds when shooting at ISO 3200)... then resharpened the image a bit. Normally sharpening will really increase the appearance of noise, which is why I didn't do any more until after applying NR. It improved quite a bit, I think. But would have been even better working from an original, full size RAW file that had not been so heavily underexposed. I also fooled around with the color balance a little.... But there are mixed types of light in the image so, I didn't go to far with this. If it were my image and I were spending more time optimizing it, I'd do a color balance on the main subject and foreground, then adjust the background separately. Anyway, here's the result...   Regarding underexposure... Do you have your computer monitor calibrated? The reason I ask is that most monitors are way too bright to work with photographs, leading you to make too dark images, to the point you don't realize how much you are underexposing them when shot. The first step in calibration is setting the monitor's brightness. When I first got my current monitor 3 or 4 years ago, I had to set it down to about 20% brightness for accurate prints.  Now, after several years use I still have to turn it down to about 50% or my prints and images posted online end up way too dark. I am afraid you might be disappointed with a new camera if you don't resolve some other things first. Don't blame the gear! As it is, you likely aren't getting anywhere close to the best possible high ISO shots out of the camera you've got now. ***********

  • Migration from discoverer 3.1 to BI 10g

    Hi all,
We have embarked on a recent project where the version of discoverer is being migrated from Disc 3.1 to Disc 10g. The one issue that is really bringing the implementation down is that all page settings and printouts need to be reset for every single workbook.
Is there any way Discoverer can retain the print setting, instead of the user having to manually go to each report and preview, reset paper size, margins and then print the workbook?
Please let me know if anyone has any ideas on how to overcome this issue.
    thanks
    Saliha Mohammed

    Hi all
If you were upgrading from Discoverer 4 to Discoverer 10 you would have a chance of retaining at least some of these settings. Unfortunately, Discoverer has no direct upgrade from version 3 for workbooks so I fear you will have to recreate your settings.
When you export / import from 3 you gets the business areas, LOVs and all user access converted however this does not copy any workbooks that may have been saved to the database. This I'm afraid is going to be a manual job for the users to save any workbooks they want to a My Computer and then load and save them to the database inside version 4. You might find that settings are retained if you use Desktop for the transfer of workbooks between 3 and 4.
Going from 4 to 10 you may well have to repeat the process. There are still some anomalies that creep in after the upgrade to 10. One that I know about is the default value for NULL. In older versions Discoverer used to blank the cell but in 10g the default is NULL. I'm afraid no workaround for this is known and if you have any workbooks that make use of spaces for NULL you will have to edit these after the upgrade to remove NULL and replace with spaces.

What are the benefits from upgrading from Acrobat 9 Pro Extended to Acrobat11 Pro?

Acrobat is a program used by a wide variety of users for a even wider number of purposes. So if we simply gave you a feature list, that wouldn't be very helpful.
Tell us how you use Acrobat, and what you do with it, and we can suggest improvements that were made in Acrobat X and XI Pro.

  • Upgrade from 11i to r12 application servers with Discoverer 10g

    Hello, one and all.
I have recently upgraded from 11i to r12 Oracle financial application server, after much patching and testing we finally came to the Discoverer application server.
Most workbooks open fine, however it seems that some of them (about 3%) reference columns that no longer exist in r12, for example, SET_Of_BOOKS_ID has become LEDGER_ID in r12 on the gl.gl_je_lines table.
This causes any workbook that references that business area to return an error 'Database Error - ORA-00904: " O974567"."SET_OF_BOOKS_ID": invalid identifier.
Well and good; I think that that's caused by the EUL not being refreshed after the upgrade, so I go to the Discoverer administrator and refresh the general ledger Business area. This unfortunately renames several objects inside the business area, including SET_OF_BOOKS_ID to LEDGER_ID, so instead of that error, we now get several 'Missing item or condition' errors until the workbook will not open at all with an 'Item dependency "" not found in the EUL.' error. This i assume is because the workbooks still reference the old items.
I'm guessing that several Business areas and objects therein have been renamed since nearly none of the workbooks will open now. I have restored the EUL from a backup (imported all the *.eex files) however I was wondering if anyone had faced this issue.
I apologize as I have very little understanding of Discoverer and this might be a simple fix, but I'm at this point willing to try anything for help.
    Thanks!

    Srini,
    To understand your above reply,
    You say that
    1) If they are based on 11i Discoverer EUL and Folders then export EUL And WorkBooks and Import them
into R12 Discoverer Environment..Refresh the EUL..So ORACLE will take care of the changes like 11i SOB vs R12 Ledegrs??Pl open a SR with Support on what to do with seeded EUL as part of this upgrade - I suspect you will need to import the R12 EUL as part of this upgrade.

    2) If they are Custom SQL reports from 11i then just RECREATE them from SCRATCH..Correct - after you verify that they are changed to reflect the R12 data model

    Sabra,
Not sure exactly what this might be... there could be an issue there.
Please make sure that you review the upgrade.log. Are there any errors / warnings?
Also, you might wanna peek the Metalink Note:262623.1 - Master Note for OracleAS Portal Upgrade Issues, where you'll find some nice things where to start looking at.
Later you may wanna open a Service Request into the Oracle Support.
