Features I'd like to see added to iTunes

I'm mostly pleased with iTunes and much prefer it over WMP10. The only niggle I have with it is that it won't let you copy playlists. So if I set up a smart playlist with a host of variables then want to create a copy with only one variable changed I have to go through the whole playlist creation process to make the new playlist. If there was a menu option whereby I could create a copy of a playlist and the new playlist would be called copy of... that would help in this regard.
Something else I'd like to see added is a mood rating - a bit like the 5 star rating you can attach to songs. It would be like the 5 star rating but instead of 5 stars you would rate songs from sad to happy. Then when you felt in a happy mood you could choose a smart playlist with all your happy songs or if you were in a sad mood you could choose a smart playlist with all your sad songs.
Just my twoppence worth...

THANKS FOR YOUR DETAILED RESPONSE --SORRY TO HEAR YOU ARE HAVING
CONVERSION PROBLEMS--HOPE THEY WORK OUT
I'll check out your suggestion re Buelie's discussions.
Regarding the conversion from Apple Lossless to lower bit rates, I understand
that its not time consuming from the discussions quoted below--but I am still
working on it (and still sitting on the fence re what bit rate I should use).
Secondly you mentioned the problem of duplicate songs--again I think it might
be easy to make the Lossless files distinctive. From the discussion below
I think they are already distinguished by "kind" which should make it easy to
add another distinguishing feature in a batch process. Unfortunately I'm not at that stage yet so I can't confirm that.
We are probably getting off the topic in this forum so this will probably be my last post here -- thanks again for all your help.
Below are some of the discussions (provided by King Cole) which you may or may not have read but which may provide useful:
Problem: Before I knew anything about bit rates or file sizes, I accidently imported a ton of my music as giant music files like Apple lossless! Now, my iPod has filled up with far fewer songs than Apple said could fit on my iPod! What do I do?!?
Solutions:
You have a couple options now. What you are going to need to do is convert the songs to a smaller file size like mp3. Under your import preferences (which can be found under iTunes>Preferences>Import Tab if you use an Apple or File>Preferences>Import Tab if you use Windows), change the file type to the type you would like to convert your music too.
Then, in your music library, sort your music by "Kind." If there isn't a "Kind" column at the top of your library, right click or control-click the "sorting bar" and select Kind. Click on "Kind" so that the arrow is either pointing up or down. See what file types your songs are. Are there any that are already in the file format that you are about to convert to? If so, don't select those songs. Otherwise, select the other songs (we'll say for discussion purposes that you chose AAC under the Import tab). Right click or control-click the selected songs and choose "Convert to AAC." iTunes will then copy and paste all the songs you selected into the new file format, AAC. Now, you have two options. If you have plenty of memory on your computer, I would choose Option 2.
Option 1:
You could delete all the music in the large file format from your library and continue syncing the iPod automatically.
Pros: You don't have to change any of the settings you use to sync your iPod. You also save hard drive space.
Cons: You delete the higher quality music. If you ever want to play your iPod through a stereo or high quality speakers, you won't have the high quality music to play. Also, you have to recreate all your iTunes playlists.
Option 2
Make a Smart playlist (File>Make New Smart playlist). Choose "Kind" in the first drop down menu. Choose "Does Not Contain" from the next drop down menu. Then, type in "Apple Lossless or whatever the large song file type was." What this does is essentially create a separate library for you; one that contains no large files. Now, depending on how many playlists you have, you may want to replace the songs in the playlists with AAC files, but if you don't have too many playlists with large files, it should not be a problem. Next, connect your iPod. Go to File>Preferences>iPod Tab Choose automatically update selected playlists only. Then select all the playlists, including the smart playlists, you want to sync onto your iPod. This will sync all the files in your library, excluding those in the large format.
Pros: You get the best of both world. You have all the lossless files on your computer, and all the AAC files on your iPod.
Cons: You take up a lot of file space on your computer when you virtually duplicate your library.

• What Features Would YOU Like To See Added To Encore?

I'm a relative newbie to DVD authoring, though I've completed hundreds of successful Projects. I also have used few other authoring programs, before Encore. I'd be interested in hearing what others would like to see added to Encore. This is kinda' like your "Feature Request," but it's really only for my interest and edification, as I cannot imagine Adobe reading the Lounge forum.
To date, every thing that I have wanted to do has been accomplished by either reading this forum, a couple of books or asking specific questions, and then using various workarounds. Maybe I have not set my DVD authoring sights high enough. That's why I'm posing my question to you. I also hope to get ideas for neat "things," that I never even have thought about.
Thanks,

A real coaching app would be much appreciated.  All the one alread offered does the samething... designing drills.
We (the coaches) need more than that, we need something to allow us follow and take note, comment our teams/players/coach.

• IWEB Features you would like to see added

Hi I have posted this here to see what users would like from iweb. I hope to compile the list and send it as a suggestion to Apple. It would be good to have one central location for all requests.
I don't know if iweb can support some of these requests but here goes.
Simple Google/search engine listing feature for all iweb sites
Simple site backup to a folder or location/hard drive etc
Easy Transfer, One cilck transfer of site for editing on another computer
Ability to change the text size and font of the home pages and menu bar.
A flash player that takes photos video with an on/off mute function, scalable with the ability to adjust the time each photo is displayed.
A magnification too that allows photos to be enlarged once the cursor hovers over them/scalable in size
A set of flash wipes and transitions for introducing your text/videos.
A paypal shopping cart system, doesn't have to be a full web shop just the facility to sell a few items via our site.
Ability to host a few sites say 4 max. I have a personal site and a small business site and would like to host both ( Maybe I can do this ! I am still discovering things about iweb)
A rapid loading function that you can drop you site into and it will format for quickest loading.
Maybe allow different compression settings like in Final Cut for different types of content.
(don't know if you can do this but it would be great)
A contact page that is linked to my mobile me account as well as my site, this allows me have the one location or a second to forward my mail to.
Ok Thats all I can think of at the moment, I'm sure their are a ton more suggestions out there.
Regards

• Features id like to see added to Windows 10

Features id like to see added.
First i'm a advocate for windows 8.1 after i avoided 8 like the plague. I currently have two beautiful machines running windows 8.1 and i love them. Especially my new Surface pro 2. I love everything about the surface and how windows 8 works great with it.
Im excited for the Cortana AI coming to Windows 10. Also I huge Halo fan since 2000. And a PC, Xbox to Xbox360 now PC and lite nintendo. Id love for this Windows to be a revival of the PC platform as the front line gaming machine. For example i was into the
idea of cross platform gaming and loved games for windows live to see my Xbox friends and flaunt my PC gaming.nThis would be revolutionary if Windows 10 did this. Halo Masterchief Collection would be amazing.
1. Ability to customize  the charms bar right. Be able to map blutooth, wireless, and some choice folder shortcuts. Maybe Have Cortana as the search, a custom Cortona theme charms bar option.
2. Fix the auto brightness feature for the Surface pro 2. and add battery life via software optimizations.
3 Bring Halo Masterchief collection to Windows 10 as an exclusive to sell the operating system.

Thumbs up, How great to finally have the greatest showdown ever. PC vs Xbox tournament.

• How to a make a suggestion about new features i'd like to see in itunes

how to a make a suggestion about new features i'd like to see in itunes?
I can't find any link to do this. I found a page where you can request songs or an album to be added, but i can't find a page to submit my suggestions for itunes i have for new features i'd like to see

As of now there is no good, direct link for feedback on iTunes itself. Writing Apple might be the best option, with the website feedback page perhaps the next best.

• What features would you like to see in a Java Decompiler?

Hello all,
(I'm assuming if you're viewing this thread you use(d) a decompiler for development purposes).
I'm just about to embark on my final year dissertation for university and I am going to develop a Java decompiler.
I have researched existing decompilers, e.g. Mocha, DeJaVu etc and have come up with my own feature set, but I was wondering what other Java developers would like to see in a decompiler. e.g. Support for Generics (and other v.5 features)
So please let me know of anything you would like to see in a decompiler; possible IDEs to plug into, GUI, backwards compatibility, possible plugins, J2EE support, anything at all...
Thank you for your time.
Cheers, joe

Support for DICOM SR, DICOM SEG, and Annotation and Image Markup (AIM) as output formats for the segmentation and reports would be helpful.
It would also be great to see support for native DICOM files as input rather than needing to convert to one of the other formats you currently accept.

• What would you like to see added to GB4?

The title pretty much says it.
I would like to see the AUNetSend and AUNetRecieve be able to work together internally in GB to create some kind of vocoder. I would also like to be able to mix down a file while it's still editable/useable so I can tweak as I need to (for example, move the parameters on some of the effects).
That's good for now...what do you think?
(and I know that this post is a little early, but programming takes time and I want them to get a head start)

I agree that this is almost futile. Apple is gearing GB towards podcasts instead of music recording. THAT is NOT GarageBand. That is for a DJ wannabe. GarageBand was originally about making music, not being a DJ. I am happy to have GB2 as a tool, and even happier I moved to Logic Express. However, the newest upgrade to LE was most of the same upgrades GB got. If Apple continues in this direction, many serious musicians are going to abandon both apps for something made for recording period.
I have nothing against podcasting at all. In fact it is pretty cool. I have a couple that I know of that feature my stuff regularly. But I think GarageBand and Logic should remain what they are supposed to be, recording apps for musicians. Apple could have easily done a separate app for the podcasters, while allowing us to have some of the upgrades we all asked for. Considering how that list was totally ignored and was from those who frequent the forums that Apple set up for us, I find it hard to believe that they are even listening to anything we have to say.

• New features I'd like to see in Prelude

Prelude is a very cool program and I can see this becoming a vital part of the workflow.  I have noticed a few things that aren't perfect yet and would like to change.  I will file feature requests, but I am wondering if anyone else agrees with these, has any workarounds, or has other items to add to the list.
1. Thumbnail view in the project window with hoverscrub.  Pr took a giant leap forward with Hoverscrub so you don't have to load each clip into the source monitor to preview, and PL could use this as well.  (The case could be made that PL needs this even more, since this will be a step in the workflow where you could be searching through clips even more than you would in the bins in Pr)
2.  More efficient way to create bins and move clips in the project window.  Right now, when you create a new bin, it shows up at the bottom of the list of clips.  I have a project open with 500 clips in it - if there is a clip at the top that I want to throw into the new bin, I have to drag it down and wait for the list to scroll all the way to the bottom - slowly!  Such a big time waster.  It would be more useful if I could highlight a clip - or multiple clips - hit "new bin" and the clips would automaticaly be placed in the new bin.  Or, having the option to have multiple tabs in the project window (like Pr) could also alleviate the issue.
3.  The ability to send clips to a specific bin in Pr.  Right now, when you send clips over to Pr, they show up in the main project window.  If I have a bin structure set up there, it would be nice to target certain bins so the clips down't get lost in the higher level bin hierarchy.  For example, if I'm working in a bin that is nested in a B-Roll bin, nested in an interview subject and want to go back to Pl to find more clips, I would like the ability to have the B-Roll bin open, go to Pl, send a clip, and have it show up there in the proper bin.  Now, I have to navigate back to the top level and drag it to the proper place.  Not a huge deal with one clip, but working with lots of clips can get disorganzied pretty quickly.  One last note - some might say that all the Pl work should be done up front and organized there before going tp Pr, but I am finding Pr-Pl to work well together, using Pl as my sorting, metadata and organization tool concurrent with Pr.  Essentially, Pl is acting like a turbocharged version of Pr's Brower, Poject panel and metadata panel in a separate app.
Any thoughts?

Thanks for responding Wes.  I've pasted the confusing text from that website referenced in my original post below:
Ingest movie clips
You can ingest entire movie clips or a selected portion of the movie clips (partial ingest). You can also transcode the selected movie clips using more than one encoding option.
Select File > Ingest. Alternatively, press Ctrl+I (Win) or Cmd+I (Mac OS).
Navigate to the folder containing media, and click the folder. The contents of the folder are displayed in the center panel.
Tip: To access folders from which you previously ingested content, use the menu above the panel.
Do the following based on your requirements:
To view content as Thumbnails, click the Icon View button.
To view content as a list, click the List View button.
To quickly preview the contents of a movie clip, drag the cursor across the thumbnail. You can also click the thumbnail and use the playhead to scrub the movie. Alternatively, use the JKL keys to control playback of the selected thumbnail.
To change the thumbnail size of movie clips in the panel, use the Zoom slide bar.

• Features I would like to see in the next version o...

Following are some of the drawbacks in the OVi suite when compared to PC suites from other manufacturers. As a Nokia Ovi user I would love to have these features added to Nokia OVi suite as I believe they are very useful,
1.OVi suite doesnt show the mobile network coverage. This could be a useful feature as user can see whether the mobile is having enough range when using OVi to send SMS's.
2.OVi suite doesnt show the available battery level.
3.Ovi suite should also list the call details as well. Now only messages,contatcs,Photos/Videos,music store, maps and software updates are shown.Having the call logs (received/missed/dialled) will be a very useful feature.
4.Ovi suite does not have any option to view the Notes and Calendar entries on the phone. This is also one useful feature i have found in other mobiles and their PC suites.
Hope Nokia will consider adding the above mentioned features in Ovi suite in future.

Hello @sjose2x,

• Is there a place where I can submit a feature I'd like to see in FCPX?

Hi all FCP editors out there!  I'm one of you and have been using FCP since it came out!  I recently cut several pieces in FCPX after studying the new App and I am working hard to embrace it.  I would like to know if I can submit a request for the following feature in the upcoming versions of FCPX:
When capturing from a media card I would like to be able to select which clips I want to bring in, and which I don't.  I'd like to be able to trim the ins and outs of the clips I'm bringing in as well as give each a name that identifies the clip, possibly also add notes.  Basically I'd love to see some type of Log and Transfer interface.  Unless I'm mistaken (happens a lot) it seems like I am only able to bring everything in, making selections as to what will happen to the files, such as optimizing them to Apple ProRes, "fixing" audio, etc.  But I do not see a way to trim and label.
Apple FCPX developers, if you are checking in on this forum, please consider my request, and thank to all of you for taking the time to read my question.
Stephen May

Tom, is it acceptable to use FCP7 Log & Transfer when importing card media (like I have been doing in the past) and then close FCP7 and open FCPX and import those ProRes clips - since they're in the RAID, already labeled and trimmed, and already "optimized"?  Does that sound like something that will work for me and work with FCPX?

• Features I would like to see in Capacity IQ

Hi all,
I am currently implementing Capacity IQ in our virtual environment and I encounter some issue's. I know some probably will be solved by VCops however it is yet uncertain whether we will purchase that software.
- I have 4 vCenters, so I need to log into Capacity IQ 4 times. This makes it hard to provide a Capacity Plan for over all my resources.
- I have multiple hardware platforms in the same vCenter. Sometimes my managment would like to know what the remaining capacity is on a specific platform. I cannot select multiple clusters, so I need to provide a forecast myself.
- Capacity IQ does not provide the intelligence for performing a what-if analysis on datacenter level.
- Some of my clusters function as a DR test-cluster. Never running any machines only during the DR-test, which are scheduled frequently. I would like the option to exclude clusters in Capacity IQ's trend analysis. This way the DR-test does not mess up the trend analysis.
- I cannot enter a custom account to schedule reports with(workaround logon to vCenter and schedule)
- I need the reports to be written to a NFS/CIFS share somewhere, so I can serve them from there and anyone can go look for themselves.
Any ideas with regards to these issue's are much appreciated!

• Mail - Features I'd Like to see in Leopard

I hope someone from Apple reads this, but even if not, I get the satisfaction of getting this off my chest!
I love Mail and we use it for our business. I consider myself a power user, although everyone thinks they are above average! Since storage is cheap and search is fast, I started a policy of never deleting an email ever again (except spam). So by now I have some pretty chunky files in Mail. So what I want is:
- easy Archiving features (like Outlook)
- even more robust, and faster handling of large quantities of mail
- bullets, numbering
- send HTML
- fix for the character problems when pasting from Microsoft Word or sending to Microsoft Outlook
All the fancy new stuff in Leopard looks great, but let's get the basics as solid as possible, please!!

• Features I would like to see in LabView to enhance documentation and transparency

Problem1: How to make the operator aware of what a logical structure is currently doing/waiting for.
Suggested solution: Introduce a "Header" in all the structures, including a structure NAME and a structure INFO and TEXT (all of which may be entered in ASCII, or fed a value from inside).
Nested structures may feed values "outwards", overriding the previous text in this field.
Thus, accessing the header of the structure "NAME" and retrieving its "INFO" you may actually get the "NAME" of the last activated sub-structure, and so forth.
Benefits:
a) In the code, the header will serve to enforce further documenting the purpose of the structure. On the top of a case structure (for example) you will always see it's NAME (i.e. "Machine Supervision") and for each case you feed a separate INFO (i.e. "Overcurrent has Tripped") and a TEXT (i.e. "Check this or that and press GO to continue")
b) As each case is entered (or "continually"?) the header is made globally available to a "Header info vi" or directly to a front panel object. Thus, on the front panel the operator may easily track the actions of the program. (i.e. This program is currently doing "Machine Supervision". It is currently in state "Overcurrent has tripped". The programmer now advices you to "Check this or that and press GO to continue")
Problem2: What really happened when things went wrong? There are many ways to solve this general problem, however...
Suggested solution: I would like a special "Event Printer" front panel object. That is, a fifo register where info may be entered (from the "Header" above perhaps) and where the last few events may readily be displayed for the operator, much like a solid state event printer.
Benefits: Allows the operator a nice means to track the operation of the program. (and the programmer an easy way of accomplishing it). Example printout:
09.00 > "Initialization"
09.03 > "Machine Supervision"
11.42 > > "Overcurrent has tripped"
(I can think of many options here, such as a selectable fifo depth, how much should be visible, scrollable or not, printing up/down or left/right, etc. This way you can make anything from a simple "current action" field, up to a scrollable historical event database from now, back to when the program was started.
If you have a really elegant way of doing the same with current vi's, I would be interrested to learn how.
Best regards / Ake Hansson

All this is functionality you can create coding your own VIs. It's nice that LabVIEW comes with in-built functions fro a lot of basic tasks..it even has a wealth of functions for very specific tasks...but you got to draw the line somewhere (and let third-party developers do the rest...).
Creating a functional global/que e.g. to hold the last status update from different processes and then read that status and display it on an indicator (or on the window status bar (using e.g. G Toolkit)) is straigtforward.
You can create a version of each structure with string constants or controls in the upper corner(s), fed into the functional global/que...save it in a VI that you put in the user.lib directory and then set the Merge VI option in the palette...you now have a
structure template with the header field and status que.
