Features you want in iPhone

Dear iPhone Users,
I Know you are holding the best phone in your hand, since i am new iPhone user and if i compare it with my last experience for sure it delightful and exiting so far. but at the same time i am missing few of the feature that i am missing and i think they make your life easy.improvisation is the key to remain on the top therefore i am listing few of the things that i felt iPhone users deserve to experience after paying hefty price for the device. other users can also add into it if they wish
1> separate volume setting for alert and call ring. i dont want my alert tone as loud as ring tone.
2> end the call using power button, it is very handy believe me if you get some idiotic promotional call at odd time you would want to slap that guy and cutting the call using power button will give you the same feeling.

you can let apple know using the feedback channel'http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

  • You want an iPhone 4S? be prepared to jump through some loops

After making people wait for a new iphone for a year and half, Apple has made a half a*s job of it and come up with an updated version of the iphone 4,
Their customer services have also gone down the pants. I have been to the apple shop 3 times in the past week,
First time around there was a huge Queue, abit unexpected but my fault for thinking I could pick one up on the day of lunch without waiting, after all I was there queuing last time around for over 2 hours.
Went again at the weekend and was told they would have some in stock mid week.
On Wednesday (today) I went in again and was told they have had a delivery but its on a first come first server basis but I would have to reserver one on-line (after 9PM) to be picked up the next day.
It turns out that you cant reserver one on line. or maybe i missed the boat because I couldn't get online on my mac due to software update..
Now if you have a PC forget it, you don't cant even get to the page to reserve it, on my mac after rebooting 3 times I got to the reservation page only to find out that they are out of stock everywhere.
Is this a marketing a ploy to keep people keen, because its not working for me, I have decided to go back to PC and might even give up my beloved iPhone if Apple keep this up.
I have been a royal iPhone customer, have had one since they came out with the original iPhone even before it was out in the UK and have had the ever one since, I have recommended it to friends and family, bought one for the girlfriend and even bought an iMac (disappointing to say the least, non of the stability of a unix based system and not as functional as Windows).
Up on till today I was willing to spend £600 to upgrade  from a 4 to 4S but after my experience I it may be time to switch, with Steve jobs gone they are not like to be as innovative and Apple seem to have exchanged customer service for the pursuit of profit.

Not sure what your issue is.
The iphone 4s is extremely popular.  People are waiting in line for it and you are surprised that you have to wait as well?
Do you think that all of the people who are in line in front of you are not as loyal a customer as you?
Wait a week or two, then walk in and get one.
If you want one right away, then wait like everyone else.

  • Ovi Suite, please list features you want.

Well, actually I posted a few new features I want for the next version of Ovi Suite in the Nokia BetaLabs suggestion site. Most people seem to find this place more, accessible, so I was wondering if maybe I could just incorporate your "wants" into my own letter. Of course bugs are a different story, since I am composing a feature request. If you need bug reports, I'll make another thread.
Basically what I sent already are:
    1. Give Ovi Suite it's own calendar. I would understand if you guys have trouble making the suite sync the phone with different calendar applications like Outlook and others (MS is not Nokia, so...), but what if there was a function in the Ovi Suite itself that syncs with Outlook, making an "Ovi Calendar" function, and that would be the one to sync into the phone?
    2. Ovi Suite should be able to access Ovi Store. It is pretty tedious to send links to the phone when using Ovi Store on the PC. Why not just let Ovi Suite be a direct link to Ovi Store to install into the phone the apps we want? Not all people have access to mobile internet. I do, but I find using the phone for mobile downloads and installations tedious as the phone does have its own limitations.
    3. Ovi suite should also be able to keep a library of installer of apps we download through the store, or extract apps we have on the phone. There are times that we may have to do resets and reformats of our phone, and it is tedious to redownload everything again.
If you find my post helpful please click the green star on the left under the avatar. Thanks.

    1. Private messages, photos, and contacts being flaunted for all to see. Get away from this poorly poorly poorly thought out interface.
    2. Start up splash screen up for a minute if OVI has trouble signing in.  Make OVI start up fast!  Give us control over the time-out times.
    3. Exceedingly long timeouts on updates if server not found (and timeouts in general, and not being able to do anything else while waiting) - get them into check.
    4. Newly sent messages do not show in conversations once sent *from OVI itself*.  You have to sync first. I mean, come on!
    5. Descent reports on sync - not just the recent changes!  Where do I adjust what OVI considers recent?  What about from the last sync?
    6. Software slow in general - option to turn off the animation of the interface and skip to the end result?  I don't want pretty, I want WORKING.
    7. On sync, certain contacts' messages displayed as sent by phone number, not the contact (possibly contact recently changed), but all is well after reboot (possibly)
    8. We want to select the outlook folders we want to sync with - /t5/Nokia-Ovi-Suite/OVI-Suite-and-PC-Suite-What-about-professional-environments/td-p/575256
I recall a previous OVI sync that reported a list of changes when syncing contacts.  This showed the old contact information and what it changed it to.  It was also a whole lot more configurable as to what folders in Outlook it should sync with.  This could be used to maintain a different outlook folder of contacts you want to sync to your phone.  This seems to be gone now.
OVI tries to sign into Nokia on startup, so if there is a net connection available, it will hang in the startup splash screen until it times out (that takes up to 60 seconds).  With the entry level computer being ten times as powerful as the UK weather supercomputer of ten years ago, one would think that a big company like Nokia could write something a little more responsive?  I'm pretty sure Nokia's drive is to stay current with Visual Studio 2010 and .net framework 3.5, but that tendency has lead to the complete downfall of most.  Just keep to what works in old code until you have thoroughly tested the new platform internally to the company!
I don't even know why I raise my voice here because everyone knows we are all beta testers for the big companies.  Except, most users don't have the patience to come here and plead for better software, so it's up to the few masochists that we are to shout to the giant and hope we are heard - all in vain.
At least I got a response from Nokia (saylinen) from the last one, inquiring about my issue with OVI displaying messages with phone numbers only.
The messages displayed the right senders from the contacts list after a reboot.  But I'm not prepared to reboot after a sync just to help OVI get back on track!  The minute wait in the splash screen on startup if OVI can't sign in?  Private messages and photos being flaunted all over your screen in the OVI "home" interface?  It's ridiculous!
I've read a problem from another user that contacts are lost when syncing?  If you follow my post, mail me, I want to list your problem and shout to the bad giant called Nokia.
Nokia, none of us are happy with what you are doing with the software.  We want a little 4 megabyte or so app, that launches in less than 100 ms, and instantly shows everything we can access from the phone, on our PCs, IF we drill into it.  Why not show a tree starting with contacts, messages, photos, videos, and music, and when we drill down to them we can see filenames, creation dates, last accessed dates, and size?
And while things are idle, why not use the idle time (if option selected in options) to start syncing?  Transfer the newest stuff first!  And do it to a buffer directory, so it's all local on our PCs when we choose to update?  OR auto update IF the option is selected?  Give us options!
But first and foremost, give us access that's fast and responsive?
The idea of separating it into phone and computer is also good.  But make the phone alive!  If we browse the phone, we want to see what's on there NOW.  Not since the last time we pressed sync!
Come on guys, you've had a few years of writing phone software by now.  It's time to start getting it right!
Found the same request for outlook folder selection in this thread: /t5/Nokia-Ovi-Suite/OVI-Suite-and-PC-Suite-What-about-professional-environments/td-p/575256

  • Can you use the iPhone wirelessly without activating AT&T?

FIrst, I HATE AT&T, the coverage is awful and I am very happy with Verizon. I would like to use the iPhone as more of a PDA, and having a PDA with wireless connectivity would be great.
Do you have to activate the phone plan, or can you just use it with a wireless connection?
Any chance they will eventually offer it with other carriers?
    Thanks
    John

Well you can be sure Apple will not make a product for Verizon for at least five years, as that is how long its contract lasts with ATT. That contract prevents Apple from allowing the iPhone to work on anybody else's network, and from making any phones for non-GSM networks. The only other GSM network in the US is T-Mobil. SO I suspect Apple can make a non iPhone for T-Mobile before its deal with ATT expires.
Also, you can try going to ATT and telling them you want the iPhone, however, you will not provide them your social security number, and ask are there any options available to you. They may tell you that you can use the iPhone as a Go-Phone (they are not adversing this, but it is in their policy manual). After a month, cancel the go phone service (as there is no contract). Also, ATT generally allows you to cancel a contract with 30 days. So they might just let you cancel the contract, and your iPhone will probably still work (the non phone features).

  • HT1414 When I hit restore a file menu from my computer pops up and I am not sure what file to put in to get my iphone to restore from.  I don't get the box that says are you sure you want to restore.  So how do I get it to restore so I can see if this fix

I got a "new" iphone from the Apple store when my dog bit the phone and cracked the front.  This new phone will not play any music, ie no sound will come out.  I can watch videos with sounds but no music from any of my playlists.  I checked with Apple and was told to try to restore my iphone.  I did all the necessary prep work like backing up and syncing and then hit the restore button on the iTunes page.  A file menu icon popped up with a blank in it and I do not know what file I need to put in the window as where it needs to find a file to restore the phone.  I never got a message that said are you sure you want to restore the phone.  I need some help if anyone knows how to do this or should I just go back to the Apple store (which is over an hour away)?  Thanks

I am syncing my iphone to my iTunes account and then I do a backup and also making sure all updates are current.  Then by going to the my phone and then going to the right and selecting the restore my iphone.

  • TS3697 I am receiving an error message(iTunes will no longer sync photos to the iPhone "Peter's iPhone". Do you want to keep or remove photos previously synced to your iPhone") I am trying to download pics from my computer to my iPhone. Any ideas? Peter

When I went to download some pics (originally taken with my iphone 4S) from my computer back to my iPhone I got the following error message: "iTunes will no longer sync photos to the iPhone "Peter's iPhone". Do you want to keep or remove photos previosly synced to your iPhone?"
Coincidentally, my wife just purchased an iPhone 4S and syncs to iTunes on the same computer.
    Any ideas?
    Peter

The "best" way to handle it, if you want to keep everything separate, is to create separate user accounts on the computer. make sure you log into your account on the computer before you attempt to sync your phone and log out when you're done using the computer.
Though it's possible to sync both of them to the same iTunes library, and even share an account for the iTunes store, you're inviting confusion and possible data loss (as you've discovered already). Best to just use separate user accounts on the computer. That also gives you the benefit of not polluting the other persons browser favorites, contacts, etc.

  • When i go to sync my apps with my computer it tells me  ''are you sure you want to sync apps ? all exsisting apps and there data on (iphone) will be replaced with the apps on this itunes library'' does this mean all my data will be lost if i continue ?

when i go to sync my apps with my computer it tells me  ''are you sure you want to sync apps ? all exsisting apps and there data on (iphone) will be replaced with the apps on this itunes library'' does this mean all my data will be lost if i continue ?

Regarding your broken, previously authorized computer, here's how that works:
You would authorize your new computer -- maybe you've done that already.  Then you will have two computers authorized.  Apple allows you to have up to five computers authorized at any time.  If you get to five, you can then go to your account details in iTunes and remove all authorizations.
Bear in mind this is not saying you can synch to more tham one library.  Razmee209 and gdgmacguy's comments above are correct.  But if Apple only allowed you to authorize one computer at a time, then having a broken computer would mean you could no longer use your Apple ID with iTunes.

  • Syncing iPad iPhone iMac with Google Calendar, everything you want to know

Ok Guys, I just spent the last 4 hours going nuts with experimentations, trials and errors, and I finally think I figured it out, so bear with me here because it's not that simple. And excuse me for the poor english, I'm from Brazil.
Ok, in the iMac you're gonna set up a CalDAV account with your google login/password. It will work flawlessly and you won't have any problems, it will always update the google calendar and be updated by it. Just remember to use CMD+R to refresh it whenever you want, so you don't have to wait the 15 minutes or whatever you set in preferences.
Now let's talk iPad and iPhone. First of all, you have 2 options to sync calendars with Google, you can use protocol CalDAV or protocol Exchange.
Google's setup instructions for CalDAV (both iPhone and iPad) is here: http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=151674
The instructions for both iPhone and iPad for Exchange is here:
    http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138740
(just be sure to select calendar only, cause I'm assuming you're using IMAP or other protocol for mail and contacts).
The main difference between CalDAV and Exchange is that Exchange supports push updates, wich is instant, while with CalDAV you have to fetch manually (every time you open the calendar app) or another time setting (like 15 min, one hour, etc).
Well, my experiences revealed that the iPhone and the iPad will sync flawlessly with Google Calendar and the iMac, without any problems, BUT as long as you use Exchange AND Push to update the calendars (CalDAV doesn't support Push, and you need Push so the iPad sync works).
Let me repeat that: IF and ONLY IF you have BOTH Exchange protocol configured and PUSH enabled iPad and iPhone will sync flawlessly. But many people (me included) dont want to use push because a) it has a battery hit b) they don't need instant updates c) it consumes cellular data when you're not on Wifi, and if you don't have an unlimited plan that's not good.
So, if you TURN OFF PUSH with Exchange sync, the iPad will stop syncing properly. Curiously, the iPhone will continue syncing properly.
What I discovered is that, on the iPad, doesn't matter if you use CalDAV or Exchange, the moment you turn OFF push notifications it won't sync manually anymore. And by that I mean that with push off the iPad will not refresh calendar data when you open the calendar app (as it should since push is off and manual fetch is selected).
To sum it up, I discovred that with push OFF in both the iPad and the iPhone (either with Exchange or CalDAV):
    - The iPhone will update both google calendar and the iMac;
    - The iphone will be updated by both google calendar and the iMac and events created in the iPad;
    - The iPad will NOT be updated when you open the calendar app, so it won't see any changes made either on the iPhone, iPad or Google Calendar, but when you create new events in the iPad you will see the data icon spinning so it will send that event to the other 3, but it will not recieve anything.
On macrumors forum people discovered that on the iPad, if you open your calendar, close it, change settings from manually fetch to 15 minutes or whatever, it will sync the next time you open your calendar. But it's unreliable (doesn't work every time), not to mention that you won't want to do that every time you need to sync your calendar !
What about the iPhone ? Well, in my experiences I found out that it doesn't matter if you use Exchange OR CalDAV, it will manually sync with push off every time you open the calendar app. Just a sidenote: the iPhone wasn't manually refreshing with push off as well, just like the iPad, but as soon as I rebooted it started to sync manually every single time and it has been so far. But the iPad didn't sync manually every time even after I rebooted it.
To end it all, how to know if the calendar is manually syncing with Push OFF ? Well, just open the calendar app and after 5 seconds you should see the data spinning logo right next to the 3G or Wifi icon in the status bar. It must happen EVERY time you open the calendar app (you don't even need to force quit the calendar app for it to happen, it must happen every time you hit home and then open the calendar again). If it's not spinning (recieving data) 5 seconds after you opened the calendar app, it's not manually syncing, so on the iPhone you should reboot and on the iPad there's no fix I found so far (besides the unreliable fix of chaning the fetch time like I said before).
Oh, I did all these tests with an iPhone 3GS running iOS4 (don't complain it's not 4.2.1, cause the iPhone IS working, the problem is with the iPad), and an iPad running 4.2.1.
I just hope this thread gets attention because It almost drove me nuts to figure out all these things.
    Cheers,
    Felipe Raul

An update: I am seeing the CalDAV account sync more frequently than the 15 minute interval I have Fetch set to, sometimes as soon as 5-6 minutes. This is however going in/out of the calendar app multiple times... Every once in a which it will update.
I've found no pattern as to what triggers the sync. It doesn't seem to matter if I go into another app or not, or whether I close out the calendar app from the task menu. It's just totally random.
You might say, "what's wrong with just letting it fetch every 15 minutes as it is schedule to do?" Well, most of the time this would be ok, but there are occasionally moments when a decision must be made and an up-to-the-minute current accurate calendar is required for this to happen.
At this point, I'm going to have to keep my priority/vital calendars syncing via Exchange/push, and use CalDAV/push for the less vital calendars and at least have control over calendar colors with those.
Also, just wanted to mention that all the above testing has been over a stable wifi connection, rather than 3G or Edge, in case it makes a difference. (I don't think it does.)

While making a backup copy in Itunes of my Iphone I receive the following error message: While making a backup copy of this iPhone (-35) an error has occurred.  Do you want to continue with altering this Iphone? When you continue al the material on this Iphone will be lost.
I reinstalled iTunes but that dit not help. After synching iTunes with my iPhone it also asks to authorize my pc and when i Click on ok, it says it is already authorized.
Please can somebody help me, so I can make backup.
    Greetz,
    Derk

It's likely that your backup is corrupt. Try deleting the backup, then right click on the name of the phone in iTunes and choose "back up". To delete go to iTunes Preferences, Devices tab. Highlight and delete the most recent backup. Note that sometimes deleting this way leaves some garbage around that can still interfere with a new backup, so you should verify that the backup folder is empty.
    from: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system.   Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac:  ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP:  \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista and Windows 7:  \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.

  • "Do you want to erase this iPhone?"

    Hi all-
My wife and I recently got iPhones. My plan for my wife's phone is to sync the calendar with her Windows machine at work and everything else with our Mac at home. More details here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1719958&tstart=0
So far she's synced up with her work calendar fine, and downloaded appplications great from my home machine. But when I try to sync media (music/video) with my media library on my home computer, I get this error:
"{My wife's iPhone} is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?"
Now, there is no music or video on her iPhone currently, so I'm assuming that it will just "erase" the empty iTunes library on the phone. But because it says "erase this iPhone" rather than "erase this iPhone's media library," I just thought I'd double check. So, my question: if I click "yes" on this, I'm not going to lose her calendar, contacts, etc., am I?
    Thanks in advance.
Edit: I should add that I do have iTunes set up on our home computer so that it specifically should only be syncing audio, video, and applications with my wife's iPhone. But just seeing that "erase this iPhone" message makes me really anxious.
Message was edited by: Joshua Fruhlinger2

It will only effect iTunes, since the iPhone can be synced with one iTunes library at a time--so no, you should be fine now. Just know that if you're switching between computers, you'll get that message each time.

  • Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?

Why ON EARTH would I want to do this??  Come on Apple, copy protection aside, this is the stupidest prompt in the history of prompts.
The basic problem (if you Google it) that many many many many legitimate purchaser's of music are running into is this prompt.  And here is why:
    1.  We have an iPhone with a bunch of purchased songs on it and was at one point working with another iTunes library.
    2.  For whatever reason our computer crashes, the computer is gone/sold, not available, dead, pick your poison, it happens.
    3.  We setup a new computer and install iTunes and get a prompt to "Authorize" this computer (apparently we get 5 authorizations total).
    4.  We try to get all the songs from our iPhone back into iTunes and click the Sync button and ...
    5.  We get the following:
The iPhone "Your iPhone's name" is synced with another iTunes library.  Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?
An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time.  Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library.
Really?  This is what I have to do, wipe out all my purchased songs so that iTunes and sync with a new library?  At what point did Apple think this idea was even remotely in the best interest of their customers?  Seriously?
So now I'm stuck with an iPhone with songs on it, a computer with songs on it, but neither able transfer songs ... Happy Happy Joy Joy.  This is NUTS!?  Why punish people that you can verify they've purchased their songs with this bizarre scheme ... and further more, what if some of my songs on my iPhone were brought in from a valid CD purchase?
So my only way out of this craziness, is to use a 3rd party app that will hack the transfer for me?  This is good how?  I'm sorry, but at what point did Apple's $40 Billion (yes Billion) profit for 2012 instigated this sort of treatment to valid paying customers?
So ... here I am, anyone have a solution to this using "valid" means (without losing all my music) or is 3rd party hacks my only option?
    Rob

Not with iTunes as your only tool, no.
The ONLY way I can proceed is with an iPhone backup and then restore that iPhone backup to my computer rather than my iPhone?  I assume this will trigger yet another "used activation"?
No you need a third party tool that will copy your other non-iTunes purchased media and photos not in the cameral roll across to your computer. (Some are listed, you can search the web for others).
When you have recovered all the media you want you can then backup the iPhone to the computer (this backup ONLY includes application data and settings, and the cameral roll. After you have backed up this data to the computer you can then immediately restore the recently made backup to the iPhone. The data in the backup will obviously be copied back but all media must have been added to the library or it will be removed from the device.
Your lost computer will count as an "activation" as will the new one. Apple devices don't add to the count. You can reset all your activations (including those you can't physically access) every 12 months should the need arise.
Am I the only one that thinks this is the most crazy and bizarre process of simply moving a music file from one of my devices to another of my devices?  Especially ones that were imported from CDs.
You still have the CDs? You can import them again. You sold, gave away, threw away the originals? Technically you no longer have the right to listen to the tracks you ripped. Is it inconvenient? Sure. One might argue that the very reason Apple & iTunes were able to drive the move to digital music to start with is that their system was designed to prevent the casual use of their devices as a means for "the kids" to simply "gift" their music libraries to each other without the tediously time-wasting efforts that the previous generation had to go through with home-taping. This no doubt helped get the content owners on board. Of course memory sticks and portable hard drives now make it trivially easy to copy content from one computer to another and indeed to simply backup your own content against a disaster but most people don't do either. Likewise they don't read instructions or terms and conditions until they are inconvenienced, and then complain. You and I might both wish iTunes made it easier, but it doesn't. And this isn't the place to complain about it. Use iTunes Feedback. You want help, it has been offered. Please read and inwardly digest it all properly this time. It does explain what you need to do to recover your data and safeguard it for the future.

  • Computer says: "The iPhone is synced with another iTunes library on "localhost". Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?"

    Hi,
I just bought an I-Phone 5S. When plugging it to my Macbook for the 1st time to copy music from my I-Tunes, this message comes up: "The iPhone is synced with another iTunes library on “localhost". Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?"
Pls help. I'm always so scared I can loose all my contacts if i am to answer "yes". Also, why am I being told the IPhone is synced with another ITunes Library when it's litterally not been connected to any at all? I dont get it.
    What shall I do?
    Thanks for your help,
    Myzin.

This would indicate that you bought a Used iPhone and/or have Connected it to another iTunes Library.
By design an iPhone can only sync to One iTunes Library at a time.

  • "The iphone is synced with another iTunes Library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTune's library?" error message.

I have an iPhone 3GS and have never added any music to the device as I had an iPod. The iPhone and iPod are hooked up to the same computer and same iTunes account. My iPod recently broke and now I am trying to add some of my music to the iPhone but I get a message that says: The iphone is synced with another iTunes Library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTune's library?
I have never had the iPhone hooked up to another iTunes account. I don't want to accept and say yes and lose all the info on my iPhone.
    Any tips or recomme

I'm having the same problem after upgrading my iPhone 3Gs to iOS 5 (and upgrading iTunes to 10.5). I noticed after doing this the ring tone I was using for incoming calls was no longer on the phone. Before the upgrade I was syncing ringtones with iTunes without problems. My contacts and apps still still sync as before, but when I try to enable syncing for ring tones in iTunes, I get the message reported at the beginning of this thread. Any risk of losing anything if I go ahead and enable ring tone syncing? The message is definitely misleading.
