Fed up with Seagate external... (files in use, -43 errors, corrupted files)

Hello everyone...
I wasn't sure where to put this, I hope this is right. I did a search on this but couldn't find anything relating to my problem.
Anyway, I have this 2 year old Seagate FreeAgentDesktop 250GB drive that's been causing me nothing but trouble for most of the time that I've owned it. It was fine for the first few months (HFS+ Journaled reformat), but then it started acting up. File transfers would interrupt at random because the file being transferred was "in use", which it clearly wasn't. It wouldn't unmount anymore because the drive was "in use", even when it clearly wasn't.
The data was very corrupted, opening video files either gave a "-50 error" in quicktime, or it wouldn't open because the file was "in use". I wasn't able to delete files either. Sometimes I got lucky and it would start working again after a restart or after pulling the usb plug.
I got fed up with it and put it in its box.
Now I'm in need of external space again, so I decided to give this drive another try. Verifying and repairing the disk with Disk Utility were both unsuccessful. I ended up reformatting it on a windows machine and then again with Disk Utility in Mac OS Extended. But I'm getting the same exact problems again after moving 2 or 3 files to the disk.
Is this a software problem? Hardware? It's still in warranty but I want to be sure that it's faulty. Is anyone else having these problems?
Here's a list of errors that I'm getting:
- "The operation can’t be completed because the item “-” is in use." upon trying to move a file to the drive.
- "The operation can’t be completed because one or more required items can’t be found.
(Error code -43)" upon trying to delete a file.
- When opening an .avi file, I either get error -50, "file in use" or the file opens with a 00:00:00 duration.
- "The file “-.jpg” could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." upon opening a .jpg file.

    I have a Seagate 3TB external HDD attached to my iMac via a Firewire 800 cable. I have the latest software running (Yosemite 10.10.3) but the Mac no longer shows the HDD in finder, I can see it in disk utility but when i come to verify or repair the disk i get this message
    " Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found" I also get this message:

    The drive is nearly full and I really don't want to lose any files, can anyone help please..

    Hi Brian
    Connect the External HD directly up to one of the iMac's and follow the Formatting and Partitioning instructions in Ken's article: (but note that doing so will erase the data on the drive)

    It's sounding more like your trouble is with network sharing than format, if so have a look

    My guess would be it has created an entirely new backup of your drive when you upgraded to Mavericks.

    Wow. Okay...
    I'll let the real veterans in this forum tackle your issues one after the other. But, I can tell you, all will be well.

    To be completely honest, FCPX is a RAM hog. It just is. But, RAM is relatively cheap, and the pay-off is good.
    4GB is right on the edge, IMHO. 16G is ideal.
    I wish you luck, hang in there, and standby for more help.

  • ITunes.exe - System error / corrupt file

    I purchased an iPod nano about a month ago. Since then about every week my entire iPod content is erased while i transfer music to iTunes. All of a sudden it disconnects and says "iTunes.exe - System error / Corrupt file". Each time this happens I need to restore my iPod, which does not help either. I have the latest iTunes version and I downloaded the iPod updater, however none of them make a difference in the situation. I would really like to know whether this can be solved or I need to return the device to the store.

  • Unable to install 10.7.3, checksum error/corrupt file

    I am having problems installing 10.7.3, I tried both the combo and software download methods and both result in similar error messages about checksum errors / corrupt file. I have cleared out any previous updates from my update folder, restarted router, restarted imac, tried download several times between last night and today but no getting past the error messages. The software update method tells me the file is corrupt during the restart installation, the combo download displays the error about checksum when I attempt to open it. Also tried from disk utility and get the same message.
    Any advice on how to proceed? I currently have 10.7.2 installed, have no problems downloading other files (downloaded some video from itunes & applications recently although not as large as the 1.3G file that 10.7.3 is). My ISP has a download cap so every attempt reduces my retry.

    Spoke too late, at the end of the install the summary window reads:
    The installation failed
    The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
    Back to square one again. Still on 10.7.2.
    First time in my apple owning period I have encountered problems such as this, its all worked up until now!

  • Slow performance with Seagate External USB Drive

    I have a 250GB Seagate external USB. The external drive is not a pocket drive and it has its own power supply. When I first got the drive (a few months ago) I mounted, paritioned and formatted the drive without any problems. I backed up my Mac HD with the included Bounce Back Express software and it took a few hours with around 60GB of data. I also updated the files a few times over the last few months with no problems.
    All of the sudden my Powerbook stopped mounting the Seagate drive when I plugged it in. I went into disk utility and ended up reformatting the drive (with Mac OS extended) and then the Powerbook mounted the drives. However, now when I try to backup files to the drive it is extremely slow. It is only transferring files at around 25 MB per minute. It will take well over 24 hours to back up the drive at this rate when it used to take a few hours.
    Seagate's website is no help, all they say is that Powerbook G4's have USB 1.1, not USB 2 which is why it is slow. I know this is not true.
    Does anyone have any idea why file transfer to the drive is suddenly so slow?
    Thanks.

    Could you describe the cabling which connects the drive to your Mini, how the drive is powered, and what else is connected via usb to your Mini? Thanks!

  • Can i still sync my files even though i have corrupted files?

    so i just put my itunes library on my new mac laptop from my pc. on my pc i have that stupid thing where it says it lost the pathway and i guess the files are now corrupted. BUT they still play on my ipod. I have synced my ipod several times not realizing this could cause a issue on my ipod, but the songs are still playing on my ipod but not my pc. so now the songs wont play on my mac either, but still play on my ipod. i want to download some more songs, but i am afraid to sync my mac and my ipod now for fear that it will replace the songs that work, with the corrupted files. also, i used my ipod as a external hard drive to transfer the files and haven't set it back up to do an automatic sync because once again i am afraid of losing the songs. the songs that are corrupt are ones from cds and ones i downloaded off itunes. but when i go to try to download the songs i already purchased, it doesn't get them all.
    help?

    if the error you are getting is a disk copy error when trying to sync the ipod, then that error normally halts the sync process. that would be why you "synced" your ipod but the songs still play on your ipod... if you have a back up of your computer, then you can find and delete the file that is giving the read or copy error and replace it with your back up.
    very important! if you are actually getting read or copy errors, then your disk may be beginning to fail. make sure that you have a good back up. if not then make one as soon as possible. as the saying goes, there are 2 kinds of hard disks: those that have failed and those that are going to fail... so protect yourself and make a back up if you wish to avoid the pain of loosing files.
    if some other problem is happening, like the some files have been mistakenly deleted (outside of itunes) and itunes just cant find the files anymore, than that is a matter of resorting the files from a back up. i believe itunes will also halt a sync if it can't find a file...
    there is a shareware utility called "podworks" which allows you to copy a song from your ipod and restore it to your computer if you've lost the song from your hard disk... but it will only copy what is still on your ipod, meaning that if you do a sync and some files get deleted from your ipod in the process, then you'll have to restore them another way. you can find podworks on versiontracker.com

  • Hard drive error - Corrupt files - Archive and Install?

    Hi
    I have been using Onyx for a while and last week it asked me to reinstall the Snow Leopard disc.  I verified this in Disk Utility first and that also advised I had corrupt files.  I installed the disc and all seemed fine when i checked again in Disk Utility.  But now a week later I have the same problem and not sure whether it is a problem with 0SX or my hard drive.  My mac pro is still under Applecare and they advised tonight that I should do another archive and install and if does not fix then to take the machine into my local Apple store.
    Red part of Error message is - Invalid volume file count - it should be 362310 instead of 362313 and Invalid volume directory count - it should be 99776 instead of 99773.
    The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.  - Error: This disk needs to be repaired etc.
    Has anyone else experienced the same problem.  I use Aperture 3 & Final Cut Express and until recently had problems getting the two to work together until Applecare helped.
    Many thanks
    Matt

    Other people have certainly experienced a corrupt HFS volume header, which is what you have, or did have. It should be a very rare occurrence. If it happens frequently, then your drive is probably failing and should be replaced.

  • How increase external disk size used for an existing file system, Solaris10

    Configuration:
    Server: Sun T5220
    S/O: Solaris 10 5/08 s10s_u5wos_10 SPARC
    Storage: EMC AX4-5
    EMC PowerPath: PowerPath Version 5.2
    I have the following scenario:
    In AX4-5 storage array, I created two LUNs into RAID Group 10, with Raid Type1/0:
    LUN 101: 20Gb
    LUN 102: 10Gb
    Both LUNs were added to Storage Group (SG1) that includes two Servers (Server1 and Server2); both servers have Operating System Solaris 10 5/8 and Power Path.
    The servers detect both LUNs across two paths. With Power Path were created a virtual path (emcpower0a, emcpower1a) to access to each LUNs respectively.
    We have mounted two file system /home/tes1 over emcpower0a -> LUN101 and /home/tes2 over emcpower1a -> LUN102.
    Filesystem size used avail capacity Mounted on
    /dev/dsk/emcpower0a 20G 919M 19G 5% /home/test1
    /dev/dsk/emcpower1a 10G 9G 1G 90% /home/test2
    I want to increase the space in file system /home/test2, without lost the information that I have stored and using the same LUN, LUN 102. To do this I start with the following steps:
    1-     Create new LUN, LUN 103 with 15Gb into RAID Group 10. Result: OK, I have available space in RAID Group 10.
    2-     Add LUN 103 to LUN 102, using concatenation option. Result: OK. This action creates a new metaLUN with the same characteristics of LUN 102, but with new space of 25Gb.
    After to do these actions, I want to know how Solaris recognize this new space. What I need to do, to increase the size of file system /home/test2 to 25 Gb. Is that possible?
    I reviewed the description of each disk using format command, and the disks not have any change.
    Could anyone help me? If you need more detail, please do not hesitate to contact me.
    Thanks in advance.

    Robert, thank a lot for your know how. You helped me to clarify some doubts. To complete your answer, I will add two more details, based on my experience.
    After to execute, type -> auto configure and label, the disk was created with different partitions like root, swap, usr, like this:
    Volume name = < >
    ascii name = <DGC-RAID10-0223 cyl 49150 alt 2 hd 32 sec 12>
    pcyl = 49152
    ncyl = 49150
    acyl = 2
    nhead = 32
    nsect = 12
    Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks
    0 root wm 0 - 682 128.06MB (683/0/0) 262272
    1 swap wu 683 - 1365 128.06MB (683/0/0) 262272
    2 backup wu 0 - 49149 9.00GB (49150/0/0) 18873600
    3 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    4 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    5 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    6 usr wm 1366 - 49149 8.75GB (47784/0/0) 18349056
    7 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    This was not convenient because all information stored appear in the first slice and growfs not work if appear root or swap slice into the disk, for that reason was necesary to recreate manually every slice with partition command. The final result was this:
    Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks
    0 unassigned wm 0 - 49149 9.00GB (49150/0/0) 18873600
    1 unassigned wu 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    2 backup wu 0 - 49149 9.00GB (49150/0/0) 18873600
    3 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    4 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    5 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    6 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    7 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    Now, execute again the label command to save the new information.
    Mount file system and execute:
    growfs –M file_system mount_point to expand the file system to 9Gb.

  • Format/cross-compatibility problems with Seagate External HDD

    I recently bought a MacBook Pro (July 08) and as soon as I took it out of the box and set it up, went to plug in my little 120GB Seagate HDD to dump the files onto my new Mac, and received the query "Do you wish to format HDD?" Of course I clicked 'NO', and ejected the drive from the Mac. I went to plug it back into my old PC (where it had worked moments before) and received the same query as on the Mac, plus, when I went into properties, found that the drive was no longer FAT32 but RAW. I now find myself at wit's end trying to rescue the 4 years' of data on the drive. I have tried running disk utility on Mac where it can see it still as FAT32, but can't mount it or repair it, and it's still in RAW format when connected to PCs. Anybody out there with some ideas?
    Thanks!

    One of the things you listed is a case-sensitive filesystem which can be troublesome.
    Run DU and look at your internal HD.
    Click on the partition and down below you will see Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    I believe that it will also say "Case Sensitive" if it is.
