Federated Searches from the Basic Search Box

Is there a way to have the portal's basic search facility perform a federated search without having to visit the federated search page? We would like our users to be able to search any location from the simple search box.

• From the URL entry box I want to drop AOL/Yahoo as the default and get Google instead. How?

I want google as the default search from the url bar/box. I don't want AOL?Yahoo search, or AIM or Bing.

I might not have made sense trying to ask this question.
Here's an example:  When I create a calendar event on my mac - I can choose, via an event dropdown item, which calendar to apply the event.  By default, its set to the iCloud calendar.  I am now finding myself clicking this listbox and changing it to my gmail calendar for every appt I create.  I was hoping there would be a way for me to have this default to my gmail calendar instead of the icloud.
Does that make better sense??
Thx

• How to change the view of the basic search portlet

Hi,
I want to change the view of the basic search portlet. To be more precise, I just want a text box and a Go button in it. Cananybody advise on how to do this?
Regards,
Priya

Indeed the 'Basic Search Box' item is what you want to use. You can choose what label you want or an icon if desired.
As mentioned in a previous reply, you need to edit the properties of the Page Group where you want to add the item and add the 'Basic Search box' to the list of available items that a user can add to the page group.
Navigator -> Properties (for the desired page group) -> Configure Tab -> Edit link in the 'Content Type and Classification' section -> Item Types section add the 'Basic Search Box'.
Now in a page in that page group, add an item, and from the list of 'Built-In Navigation Item Types' you will see the 'Basic Search Box'.

• I just installed Firefox 5. How can I remove the Bing search from the address bar? I don't want to see Bing at all.

I just installed Firefox 5. How can I remove the Bing search from the address bar. I don't want to see Bing at all. I tired the Firefox options, right-clicking on the search field and the toolbar selection drop-down but could not find a way to get rid of that unwanted search window.

*at the bottom of firefox there is a weird looking greenish circle with a lightning bolt in it*
1. click it and hover over to PREFERENCES.
2. click the second circle that say's BING.
3. Un-check both boxes.
4. you're done :)
Note: it's not going to show the google symbol encrypt when you open a new tab it's just going to automatically use google as a search engine.

• After resetting firefox, I can no longer search from the address bar

Like the title says I can't search from the address bar "awesome bar" anymore. I just get a 404 error when I try. Searching just lists tons of people getting the "just update keyword.url" answer that's no longer valid. And hasn't been for several years.
I got a browser hijack somewhere. Not sure where, and nothing was installed on my computer so I reset firefox and lost all my search engines. IE was fixed with an uninstall/reinstall. Chrome hates my face and no longer runs. (And google's help is... well if I wanted to be insulted...) I've reinstalled several times. No dice. I've now reset firefox three times. It's just not working. I've ran several virus scanners, ran several malware programs, and even asked my IT department. (They don't care cause IE works and their stupid "virus scan" was clean. I mean it took 30 seconds. What the hell did it actually scan?)
Surely there's a keyword or something that I'm missing that needs to be reset so I can get my address bar searching again.

Current Firefox versions use the default search engine that is set in the search bar as well for searching via the location bar and on the about:home page.
You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extension (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extension+and+themes
You can check the connection settings.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > Network : Connection > Settings
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Options+window+-+Advanced+panel
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

• How do I turn off searching from the address bar. Setting keyword.enabled to false is not working.

I never want to search from the address bar. I've been able to turn off this horrible annoying feature in the past by setting "keyword.enabled" to false but this no longer seems to work. Is there any way to fix this so that searching from the address bar never happens with any search engine?

If you set keyword.enabled to false, then what Firefox normally does is check whether your address bar entry is a valid server name (first DNS lookup) and, if not, it will try fixup (e.g., www.+what you typed+.com) (second DNS lookup).
If you get search results, particularly if you get results from some site other than your preferred search engine, there are two possible explanations:
(1) DNS provider hijack.
There are some service providers that do not answer the DNS lookups honestly and instead will divert you to their own page of search results. In that situation, there sometimes is a link on the page to opt out, either right there, or behind an explanation (why do I get this page?) or a settings link. You may have to look around. Or if your service provider won't let you opt out, you might need to switch to using OpenDNS or Google Public DNS.
You probably should also check your connection setting it case that has been modified:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button
Try "No proxy" here to see whether that helps.
(2) Bad add-on.
Some extensions will divert honest DNS misses to their preferred search site. Here's what I suggest for cleaning out bad add-ons:
(A) Open the Windows Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
(B) Then, in Firefox, open the Add-ons page using either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
(C) Search for remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. Note that the tools are free and take considerable time to run. If they seem to finish quickly and then ask for payment, you might have a Fake AV infection. Please use the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.
Success?

• What's the difference b/w Google searching from the Mozilla Start Page and the search bar?

It's not a high-priority question, I just want a general answer.
I read that Google renews the license of Google search bar on the Mozilla Firefox Start Page, and that's from where Mozilla makes 90% of its money, because it's a not-for-profit organisation.
I want to know whether I am giving Google a signal of making use of that license renewal when I search from the Start Page and not from the search bar I have.

hi Abhimanyu, it won't make a difference if you search from the homepage or the search bar - both use the same default search provider.
in addition, mozilla is no longer partnering with google. for details you might want to see https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2014/11/19/promoting-choice-and-innovation-on-the-web/

• Getting the Advanced Search (SP2013) to only search from the Current Site downwards

Hi
I know the Advanced Search webpart has not been updated for years (It still has scopes in the "Modify Web Part" !)
But.....
Can I get the SP2013 version to search from the current site downwards rather than starting at the top level site every time ?
Thanks
Nigel

You need to set up a new result source and change the query transform to something like this:
{searchTerms} AND Path:"http://basesmc15/teamonesubone"
Then navigate to the results.aspx that the advanced search sends it's query to. Here edit the page and edit the Search Results web part. Click on "Change Query". Select  the new result source you just created from the drop down. All the queries
will now use this result source which is limited to that subsite. Make sure to uncheck the "Show the Result Type Picker" option on the advanced search web part.

firefox installed automatically the latest version. Now my google browser, history etc. doesn't work anymore. It doesn't respond. I can't run searches from the browser. youtube button is missing. I've tried opening firefox in safe mode but that doesn't work

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

== This happened ==

== was happening with Internet Explorer, continues with Firefox

Did you do a malware check?
Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database.

• The asterisk(*) was attached to the search string when perform search from the baner.

I run into a strange behavior with performning a search from the baner (top right). For example, I enter the string called "test" and click search. The asterisk will be attached to the string make it "test*". because of this, it come back with incorrect search result. have you run into this before. Thanks!

Right click the Back/Forward buttons to get the list of sites you visited.
There is an add-on you can install which displays that arrow on either button, but it's only cosmetic. See https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/backforward-dropmarker/

• Please show me how to get rid of yahoo search COMPLETELY! I prefer google to search in the center search bar like I used to have even though it is on the search task bar

After adding a program yahoo has hijacked the search bar on the center start screen. I still have google in the task bar but would like it to also search on the main search box like it used to. I have looked for hours trying to find a fix but will wait for your response before changing to google chrome, as I am fond of firefox and it's features. I have witnessed many others with the same feeling and wish for the freedom to choose their default browser away from yahoo. It is a step in reverse to not be able to change it !!!

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

• Change wording "Directory" to "Search" in the listing search button

Hi all,
Is it possible to change the wording from "Directory" to "Search" in the listing search button?

Hi Robert,
I'm fairly certain that these are the caption keys for this module, although it's possible that it is another key. There are a lot of old or redundant keys in the language files so it might take a while to hunt for them. Search in the Caption Editor in the AdminConsole and see what other keys contain this.
It might be worth noting that I have had problems with the Caption Editor in the past so it might be worth copying the language file to your build's .delta folder and changing the caption there. It's worth noting that if you do this, any future language pack implementation would need to be delta-merged into the existing configuration.
Best regards,
Luke

• How to get my usernames to appear from the drop down box then password automatically put in?

=( ugh...
I used to have my settings where it remembered my user name from the drop down box - so I would just type the first letter of my user name and a drop down box would appear and I could just click on my user name for that particular site and my password would automatically fill in...
I changed something the other night and can't remember what the heck I did... now it won't remember ANY user name OR password or like on face book it has my user name and password there automatically when I open up the log in face book page.
So I would like to know if anyone knows what needs to be clicked and unclicked to make it so:
I start typing my user name and the drop down box appears with user names and then my password automatically fills.. I DO NOT want all my user names and passwords already IN the forms when I first open the website... but for me to actually type in a letter and then it fills it... like it used to =(
