Feedback: Adjusting Blending Options over layer in Photoshop?

Hi all, I've got a really simple problem that i cant seem to find anywhere to configure it out. I've used photoshop for real long time and as i used it more and more often for my painting, i cant help but feel that the "Double-Clicking" when mouse over a particular layer, which shortcuts into the "Blending Options" is seriously bothering me too much for my personal preference.
The thing is, i liked that blending options thing on layers and what it does but i never really does use it when i'm using my photoshop for painting. Even if i did i wanted to use it i can right click and click on the blending options myself. What i hate is the amount of time it takes and lags when a blending options window is being closed, when i didn't make any modifications at all!
As i go through my layers fast in photoshop, i run into these problem alot where my wacom pen accidentally double click on a layer where i just wanted to drag it or rename it. Sometimes it really make my heart jump when it just freezes there for 10+ seconds. My computer is rather new while its operating on windows vista i seriously don't think that is the problem of the lag.
It could be the big dimensions of my photoshop layers and the way of my working that makes it lag alot when the blending options window closes(even though i did nothing), but i just want to solve this problem by by adjusting the double click / blending options configuration fuctions, but seriously i cant seem to find it anywhere. I've also looked into keyboard shortcuts, menu shortcuts, preferences but its not there. I've also searched around the forum no one else seem to discuss this before.
So I hoped someone here actually can help me with this it'll really be doing me a big favor. Its seriously getting on my nerves... sometimes it freezes for 15 mins when i'm on my biggest ps file which is like 8000X8000 pixels.
If Not, I hope to give a feedback to the adobe photoshop community and hope that our great Photoshop will keep improving better, by adding a way to actually make it possible and customize the 'blending options' over a particular layer shortcut to another shortcut so that it won't cause a problem for a user like me.
I also hope to suggest that it'll be alot better if there is a a straightforward direct feedback system that can feedback the message straight to Adobe through the programme itself ( although this is beside my main point) because it actually takes quite a while for me to register and figure out navigate my way through this forum and finally find a way to give an effective feedback. I believe many users will not bother to actually go through all this just to provide a feedback and I believe this will prove to be effective feedback for Adobe.
If I had any issues that I had left out or I didn't know, please do kindly let me know, cause i just registered here. Thanks for reading.
Cheers,
Eonridr.

HA! I happened to stumbled upon the answer to my own question:
Use MAIN MENU > EDIT >
In the KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS and MENUS POP-UP, select
Twirl open the LAYER section
Scroll down and select
A text field will appear
Simply type the keyboard command you want to use!
NOTE: an ALERT will warn you if your shortcut is already in use

  • Blending options / knockout functionality problem in PS CC 2014

    Hello!
I've been experimenting with blending options and especially the knockout effect recently, and have discovered that it's function doesn't appear to work correctly.
    For example:
    If I have a basic three layer setup as described under;
The only way to get the intended functionality out of knockout seems to be to use the original prelocked background layer. I have not been able to duplicate the results in the first image with any other combination of layering, blending options or layer groups. To the best of my ability, I cannot fathom a way for the knockout settings to have an impact on the image in any other condition than the one mechanically identical to the first image.
So my question is in two parts, have I discovered a bug and this is not the way the knockout function is supposed to work? Or if not, am I going about this the wrong way; how the knockout function is supposed to be used and how it's intended to work?
Obviously the same effect can be achieved through masking and a few more destructive means, but the simplicity of the knockout would be far superior if it were to work properly - the way I imagine it should.
    Thank you for your input!

Maybe this will help understand the knockout function better

In your third example, one needs to have a "Real" background layer.
That can be done by going to Layer>New>Background from Layer.
(a photoshop document can only have one background layer)

  • Photoshop CS2 Layer Styles / Blending Options stopped working

I'm running Photoshop CS2 on PC. When right clicking on layers to bring up the Layer Styles / Blending Options palette, I can get the palette okay but the selections won't work when I check the boxes.
I try to select different options....drop shadow, inner shadow, etc. but nothing shows up. It's not a preview problem because the changes are not visible in my image even after I select OK.
I've reset my preferences (alt+ctl+shift) but it didn't help.
Can anyone suggest to me what I can do to wake up this palette?? I've got work pending and my online searches have left me empty handed.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Thank you both for your responses.
John: The file is PSD, RGB mode, 300dpi. Last night, I tried the layer styles in another file and it wouldn't' work.... another NEW file. Today, I opened an existing file that had layers styles already in effect and I can see them, I can click them on/off AND I can put layer styles onto other layers in the existing files that did not have them previously. I just tried creating a new file and, of course, the layer styles now work in the NEW file.... this is something I tried last night and it didn't work at that time.
Ed: Yes, I'm on the right layer. I've tried it on several layers, none of which are transparent. Thanks for the heads up.
So, this tells me it's something to do with this particular image file. I must've accidentally hit something that's put it into a strange mode. Last night, out of frustration, I just gave up, shut it all down, and turned the computer off. This morning, I went in and created a new image document and then one by one I copied and pasted the layers of my malfunctioning image into the new one. Now I can get the layers to work.
I have no idea what was wrong, but it seems I should just trash the problematic file and start fresh. At least the individual layers were not compressed and it's still salvagable.
Thank you both for your time and consideration!

  • Layer-Blending Options is frozen in CS3?

When I navigate to Layer>Blending Options, all the options (for blending) are frozen. For example,Say I want to change 'Drop Shadow', I hover over it,click it,but it does not take me to drop shadow options, or if I want to change the master opacity by sliding the bar,I can't do so. Blending options is the only tool in Photoshop that is freezing, all other tools/brushes/actions/presets are working properly. Using:
    OS-Windows XP SP2.
    Adobe Photoshop- CS3

From the sound of your post, it's probably not user error (e.g., not having the proper layer selected, etc.) but some kind of system problem.
If you have intermittent display issues, you might want to check to see if you can update your display driver - which implements OpenGL for Photoshop to use.
Go to the web site of the maker of your video card, locate the latest driver package that matches your hardware and OS, and download/install it.  Driver updates solve a surprising number of problems.

  • Layer Style/Blending options applying to all layers ie.. drop shadow angles

I am having a problem in CS6 Photoshop where I never experienced this in CS3-5.
I am designing a website and when I apply a drop shadow or inner shadow to a layer through layer style/blending options in the layers tab. It applys the same angle etc.. to all the other layers I have done styles too...
I will have 5 + layers done with styles and I will make a new layer and give it a shape, open up blending options and when I do a drop shadow and change the angle I literally can see everything on my layout change angles also when I move it around for just ONE layers style... What on earth is going on? This makes it impossible to make unique designs unless I keep flattening my PSD and transfering stuff over which destroys workflow.

Thank you for the reply's. I actually was able to figure it out shortly after making this thread.
@Noel Carboni: I needed to change the direction of the light for an inner shadow on a set of arrows for a slider. If they were the same angle it would look horrific.

  • Photoshop gives, Program Error, when attempting to use blending options in RGB

This problem started today when i tryed to throw a drop shadow on a layer. in RGB mode.  "Program Error," appeared and would not let me access any Blending options.  Although, in cmyk mode it works perfectly fine.  Was some hotkey hit on accident or has something gone wrong?  Help!

  • Save layer with styles such as blending options

    Hello,
I have a web design made in photoshop, containing of different layers, such as:
    Header
    Content
    Footer
    Logo
    Etc.
The logo-layer is graphic with blending option Outer glow attached to it, and therefore has the Fx-icon attached to it (with the eyes).
I want to save down only the pixels of the logo - in order to save it down as logo.png/jpg. The problem appears when i try to do this:
Copy layer styles only copies the style, and not the actual graphics
Trying to copy the layer into a new document results in graphics pasted in the correct way, but without the blending option.
Right-clicking on the eye-icons, and choosing Create layers almost gets the job done. The problem here is that the second layer produced (from the outer glow effect) is set with Fill to 75%. When I try to merge the two layers created, the fill-setting isn't included.
My current solution to this problem is to hide all the layers except for the logo layer(s), select all and hit Ctrl + Shift + C to Copy All Merged. Then i paste the copy into a new document and saves.
This is a half *** solution that I don't like - and I would greatly appreciate any insights I could get on this.
    Thanks!

Trying to copy the layer into a new document results in graphics pasted in the correct way, but without the blending option.
If you drag the layer into a new document, (as opposed to copy/paste), all its properties will go with it.
Or, just choose Image > Duplicate, Alt-Click the logo layer's eye icon in the Layers Panel, (to hide all other layers), crop as desired, and Save For Web.

  • Where is the "Adjust Variations" option in Photoshop CS6?

    Hi all,
I often use the Image>Adjust Variations option in Photoshop but do not see the option in Photoshop CS6. I know we are still only in the BETA stage but I am still curious. I hope it is not going to be dropped. I like to use it for quick fixes on small portions of the image every now and again:)
Thank you in advance for your help,

  • Photoshop CS4/Vista Blending Options "Mouse" Frozen

Odd issue that I may have caused while working fast and not paying attention. MAY have clicked "do you want to remove all your prefs?" that came up when using CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+S (save for web & devices). Since then, my mouse won't work in the blending options box. Example: I can choose gradient but cannot click the default gradient to get the list of my gradients. Also cannot switch from gradient to (e.g.) bevel in the same dialog box with my mouse, have to go back to the layer, blending options, choose the one I want, and use only SOME of the options. Mouse just won't work in the blending options box.
I renamed my prefs to "old" and let Photoshop rebuild them. Same issue.
Does anyone have any ideas? Many thanks in advance.

I am having the same problem using CS2. I cannot click on any of the checkboxes
    in blending options.
I dont think cs2 uses opengl.
    any suggestions are welcome.

  • Applying multiple blending options to same layer?

How could I apply multiple layer blending options to a single layer? Currently, when I select a blending option and switch to another, it removes the previous blending option
    Thanks.

You can duplicate the layer and set the top layer to the second blend mode. Or you can create an adjustment layer, and set its blending mode to the preferred second mode (this will blend a merged visible copy of the layers below back into the visible stack). It depends on what you're trying to do. In general though, blending modes are a blend of one layer's pixels into a merged visible copy of those below, so adding two modes to a layer seems to me impossible.

  • CS5 - Layer Blending Options randomly stops working completely

Okay, been trying to figure this one out for a while and it's driving me nuts. It seems like it's just some kind of crazy bug because it sometimes works, sometimes doesn't work, and I'm not really doing anything differently either way.
Right clicking on a layer and going into blend options sometimes simply doesn't work. The options come up, but stroke, gradient, drop shadow, inner/outer glow, etc... do absolutely nothing. The preview box is checked and it shows the effects properly in the little preview picture -- but it doesn't show any effects on the actual image, and when I click OK it doesn't apply them.
Any idea what could be wrong? This was happening today, then I changed nothing, went outside for a cigarette, and came back and tried the same exact thing and it worked fine. Almost positive that I did nothing else between attempts. Makes no sense...

  • Custom Keyboard Shortcuts Not Working In Layer Style / Blending Options Dialogue Box (Mac OS 10.6.8)

In the Layer Style / Blending Options dialogue box, my custom Keyboard Shortcuts to zoom in and out of the image is no longer working. Cmd+opt+shift+1 acts as cmd+1 (jumps to Drop Shadow), and cmd+opt+shift+0 acts as cmd+0 (jumps to Stroke). Outside of this box the commands seem to be working fine.
Example 1: Create a new RGB document, cmd+j the background layer, double-click this layer to open the Layer Style / Blending Options dialogue box, mash Cmd+opt+shift+1.
Result 1: The dialogue box shift focus to the Drop Shadow Options instead of the image zooming in to 100%.
Expected Result 1: The image should zoom to 100%.
Example 2: Create a new RGB document, cmd+j the background layer, double-click this layer to open the Layer Style / Blending Options dialogue box, mash Cmd+opt+shift+0.
Result 2: The dialogue box shift focus to the Stroke Options instead of the image zooming to “Fit on Screen”.
Expected Result 2: The image should zoom to “Fit on Screen”.
This same thing happened in the CS5 Beta, and it was quickly fixed, so I hope this is not a complicated issue.
Thanks, and keep up the wonderful work!

  • Movable elements of a layer - option "free transform" in Photoshop Elements 7

    Hello,
I hope that someone can help a little bit and answer my questions. Thank you.
    Description of the task:
I want to create a tool which is able to visualize the positions of pieces on a game board. At the moment I'm using Photoshop Elements 7.
I think the following procedure would be appropriate:
2 layers, the basic layer would show the game board and the images of the pieces would be on the second layer. If I try to do that with Photoshop Elements 7 then each time when I insert an image of a piece a new layer is created. I don't need a layer per figure. Yes, one could reduce a layer afterwards. But it's not so comfortable this way.
In addition the images of the pieces should be movable on the game board. There is the option "free transform" in Photoshop Elements 7 but only one element (one piece) is movable afterwards. All the inserted elements should be movable.
So my question: Is it feasible within Photoshop Elements 7? If not, which version of Photoshop Elements would be adequate or which software do I need?

After adding each piece use the to menu:
    Layer >> Merge Down
However you will only be able to move all the pieces together. You need separate layers to move the pieces individually.

  • Photoshop Blending Options & Illustrator?

    Hi,
I designed a shape in illustrator using the Pen Tool and then i imported it into Photoshop so i could add some Blending Options to it eg. drop shadow, bevel, gradient.
The problem i have is that i need to print this on to a business card and i need the shape to be in vector which I cannot seem to do once the Blending Options are added?
    Help please...

I don't know why users here on the forum say you can't do bevel in Illustrator it is not the same as Photoshop but certainly you can do bevels

  • Clicking, holding and dragging opens blending options?

I recently got a new comp and CS5, I have been a long time CS3 user. I've run into a very weird issue. When I click and drag to move a layer up or down, it frequently opens the Blending Options dialog instead. This has been driving me completely insane, as when I'm trying to quickly select and move multiple layers I keep accidentally opening the Blending Options box, and then I have to close it and reselect all the layers. Sometimes it works, but sometimes it doesn't. I do a lot of complex design work, and frequently have a LOT of layers in my photoshop documents, so this is becoming a real workflow problem for me. I have no clue what could be causing this to happen, but it's finally pissed me off enough that I had to stop dealing with it and figure out what's going on here. Hopefully it's something silly that I've missed.
Thanks in advance for any ideas!
    Aaron

Nope, I was using a mouse.
However, I seem to have fixed the problem. I had already tried restarting once and it didn't seem to do anything, but I shutdown my comp completely last night and as of this morning the problem has gone away and everything seems to be working normally.
