Feedback on Successful updates

Software update has just informed me about the 10.5.6 update being available for my MacBook Pro, currently running 10.5.5. If I understood some of the posts where problems were encountered the size of the update package was not what was expected. I checked /Libary/Updates and I have a 190.9 MB package that will be installed when I tell Software Update it is OK to update. Is that the correct size package for my situation?
Sounding like I should run Check Permissions before trying to apply this based on other posts in these forums. I am inclined to wait a few more days to see if further information about this update and why people seem to be having problems comes to light. At this point the problem updates seem to be sort of random, at least in my reading of the various posts.
Has anyone come across a reasonable explanation as to why a significant number of users are having problems with this update?

FWIW, I downloaded the Mac OS X 10.5.6 Update using the "Download only" option of Software Update since I was going to apply it to more than one Mac & saw no reason to download it more than once. (As you might know, if you do not choose this option, which downloads the MacOSXUpd10.5.6Patch.pkg file to your Downloads folder, the downloaded update will be deleted from /Libary/Updates once it is installed.)
This file is 190.9 MB, just like the file you downloaded. I have successfully used it to update both my iMac G5 & my MacBook. (FYI, the download was done with the G5 & I updated it using Software Update, which recognizes that the download was already in the Downloads folder. For the MacBook, I copied the file to it & opened it, which launches the Installer app. With the first method, the first restart is forced; with the second I had to click "OK" since the Installer app is running normally. Otherwise, the installations were identical, each requiring two restarts before the process was complete.)
Thus, I do not think the size difference between the "delta" disk image (dmg) version downloadable from Apple's downloads site & the package (pkg) version is significant. Two very different Macs; two somewhat different install methods; 100% success for both.
Like Dave Sawyer, I believe the vast majority of update problems can be traced to preexisting problems in the installation of the prior version of the OS, in the presence of incompatible third party items, in the file system of the startup drive, or in the hardware (especially with RAM). I have intentionally left permissions problems off this list -- I do not think that is a significant source of update problems because the process normally runs as root.
Anyway, I do nothing more than making sure my data is backed up before applying an update. I sometimes clone the startup drive of my G5 if I am using it for a project with a deadline (so that should something go wrong I can reboot from the clone & finish the project on time). I sometimes run Disk Utility's "Verify Disk" test beforehand if I haven't done that in a while, especially if I suspect a power failure has caused the Mac to shut down abnormally, which can cause file system corruption.
Perhaps this works for me (& it always has) because among other things I do not add any third party "enhancers" or "Haxies" to my Macs & run the verify disk test often enough to catch any creeping disk corruption before it gets serious enough to clobber the OS. I did add non-Apple RAM to my G5, but I used Rember to test it thoroughly before trusting it. Whatever the reason(s), I have never hesitated to use Software Update for OS updates. For me at least, it "just works," exactly like I expect it to.

  • Successful update to 10.1 in mid-project?

I'm near completion of a video project, and I've used Migration Assistant to move my apps and files to a new Mac. Old system was a Mac Pro running Lion and FCP X 10.0.8. I still have the old machine and an HD with backup copies of all my FCP project and event files.
Trying to decide whether it's safer to work in the old version of FCP in Mavericks, or to update FCP and let it convert the files to its new housekeeping system.
At worst I'd lose any work I'd done since making the backup of my files, and would have to redo them on the old system. But I'd rather not.
Has anyone successfully updated FCP to 10.1 in the middle of a project?

I didn't try updating to 10.1  in mid-project. I would have if necessary, but in your case I can't imagine how that could be a good idea.
It was a major organizational update, but a very modest feature update. Updating always carries risks, which you have minimized by keeping copies of the app, projects and events on the other Mac. But we can't eliminate all risks (like time expended on troubleshooting) and it's hard to see how going from 10.0.9 to 10.1 would create enough advantages to make it worthwhile.
Once you wrap up the project, the update itself is quick. However, it will save going down a lot of dead end roads to get a really solid understanding of the new library structure and how it will affect your work. Apple has a good doc on this and there are many free tutorials by solid FCP X instructors such as this.

  • I have a MacBook and I am unable to successfully update Firefox. I click "Update Firefox" and it's starts updating but never completes the process. I sometimes leave it for hours and it's still updating! Please help!

    Question
I have a MacBook and I am unable to successfully update Firefox. I click "Update Firefox" and it's starts updating but never completes the process. I sometimes leave it for hours and it's still updating! It's almost as if something is blocking it ffrom completing the process. Please help

Next time an app update gets stuck try a reset. Press and hold both the home and power buttons for10-15 seconds till the Apple logo appears. Then release both buttons. Wait till your iPad starts on it's own. Try now. Also YouTube is still available. If you can't find it the the app store go to the bottom of the app store page and tap purchased. All your deleted apps will be listed and you can reinstall YouTube from there.

  • I have tried VERY unsuccessfully to install iphoto 9.2.3 update...it says it has successfully updated - then on opening says: iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Mac OS X.

I have tried VERY unsuccessfully to install the new iphoto 9.2.3 update.
I have installed it several times both from the appstore and from Apple Support downloads...it says it has 'successfully updated' - then on opening iphoto, a dialogue box pops up and says:
iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.

Insane...I have all my updates including Lion 10.7.3 why does APPLE KEEP SENDING BETAS AS A REAL PRODUCT?
Does anyone know how to copy over a backup from a twinned drive Backup? What files etc.
    Thanks tons...

    Thanks Terence,
I did get it working finally...and your last advice was what I needed.
I am embarassed that I was an early adopter...SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER and read the problems before creating some for myself.
This was an excercise in frustration, because of the obtuse division between the appstore and Apple Support downloads... it was a bit of a circuitous route...strange that with all the security reciepts and tracking that Apple goes to to prevent piracy... which Steve by his own admission used to build Apple...
Why aren't the server scripts smart enough to say…”HEY DUMMY you can't use this download because you purchased the last iPhoto upgrade from the appstore...and… DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME and precious data BUDGET downloading this gargantuan file which will eat 20% of your expensive 5Gb monthly data allotment!!!…and NOT WORK…only pretend to…and then foul your system….kill your productivity and turn your hair whiter…even worse than LION did.
I am just so antagonized by the inept scripts in recent installations that don't do a diagnostic before allowing installation that is going to corrupt things...I had less effort and frustration when I ran my ATARI with a MAC emulator...rarely lost any productivity to nonsense.
I AM TIRED OF BETAs dressed as products...designed and rushed out for Apple toys that once were tools of the creative trade...COREL...may still have a chance at a comeback if Apple keeps pumping out toys instead of the venerable tools we once adored as income enhancers.

  • Global succession updates are limited to 500 relationships. If more than 500 exist PLM presents a warning message and does not execute the update

Global succession updates are limited to 500 relationships. If more than 500 exist PLM presents a warning message and does not execute the update.
How/Where to increase the relationship count?
The message which I can see :
    Warning:
This specification has exceeded the number of parent relationships allowed by Where Used. The Where Used tool only supports up to 500 parent relationships.

This really brings up a larger topic around change management.
The questions you should start with is
    1. What kind of change is happening to the raw material?
    2. Will this change affect anything upstream inside or outside of PLM4P? (Will this change affect nutrition, compliance, the ingredient statement, the label etc?)
    3. Who needs to approve this change?
If they are non-material changes (changes that don't affect theoretical calculations, the ingredient statement, labeling, upstream systems that need to be notified etc) then you should be using get latest revision instead of global succession.   Get Latest Revision will automatically switch out the material with the latest approved version.  This logic is also configurable in case you need to add additional guard conditions.   We can also provide guidance around locking the get latest revision lock once a specification has reached the retired/obsolete state so changes won't occur for specifications in those statuses.
If the changes to the raw material are material changes (changes that affect calculations, labeling etc) then the change should be reflected with a copy of the specification.  Dependent specifications then need to be re-issued so calculations can be performed and the appropriate workflow reviews can occur.   Smart Issue allows for filtering based on status and should let you re-issue in smaller blocks.
Let me know more about your change management strategy, how often large material changes happen and maybe example causes for those mass changes.  We can also schedule a change management training session for everyone where we can share our vision and tools available for change management.  This topic is quite large and generally requires a lot of business process discussion beyond just the tools available.

  • HT4623 i just updated my ipad to ios 8 but i cant connect to wifi network..its says my password is incorrect although i know my password is correct as successfully updated 2 iphones and connected to same wifi network

i just updated my ipad to ios 8 but i cant connect to wifi network..its says my password is incorrect although i know my password is correct as successfully updated 2 iphones and connected to same wifi network

I had the same problem. I reset my network settings as iOS 8 on my iPad 3 seemed a bit slow. When I tried to reconnect to the wifi the correct password was not accepted immediately.
after retrying several times it did manage to join the network. The only observation I had was that I had a weak signal and an iPhone next to me at the time.
make sure you are close to the wifi signal away from any other wifi devices.

  • Cannot successfully update any vaults

I just upgraded to Aperture 3 and since then have not been able to successfully update any of my vaults. The library became too large for the external drive that housed my A Vault so I added a new vault on a separate drive that has ample room. When I clicked the update vault icon, aperture said it was calculating disk space and then said it was updating vault. When the update vault scrollbar reached about halfway it stopped moving. I left it run overnight and no change. I was able to then just click on any image and the update bar disappeared as if nothing ever happened. I checked the external drive to see if anything was there and a vault existed, but is much smaller in size than my actual library.
I then went and picked up my offsite drive and brought it back to the office to back up. It did the same thing as above.
I'm confused. I tried to go through the steps to repair my library, but each time I command, option click on the library it just opens Aperture instead of the repair dialogue. Is there another way to repair the library and does anyone have any other suggestions?
    Thanks!

I too am experiencing vault issues, although not exactly the same as what you describe. My issues were posted to this discussion thread (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2631926&tstart=250) on Oct 30, and no one has provided their ideas or solutions in reply. The point I wish to make is that colleagues who regularly follow and post suggestions and answer questions seem to ignore issues with vaults. After I posted my question I searched all posts in this this thread where the word "vault" is used in the subject, and most if not all have zero responses and I can only conclude by the general absence of responses to vault issues that this feature of Aperture is not well known. In the last 90 days I encountered some 20 users with vault issues.
If there are people out there who know how to update, reconnect, migrate, etc vaults - particularly when going from AP2 --> AP3, there are a number of us users who sure would appreciate their insights.
Perhaps there are some Apple personnel on the Aperture Software Team who monitor this thread....if you are out there, then please chime in.

  • ExecuteBatch(): number of successfully updated rows

    Hello everybody:
Here is a simple but often a repeated question in java forums:
    Requirement:
1.To read a flat file that has many rows of data.
2.Parse the data and update the database accordingly.
3.Find the number of successfully updated rows.
    Approach:
After reading the file and parsing its data,
    - use PreparedStatement
    - use executeBatch()
I found this as unadvisable to use executeBatch() as its implementation is
inherently driver specific. The executeBatch() returns an array of update counts.
Now,can any one tell me, what is the best way to trace the number of successfully
(and unsuccessfully) updated rows by using this count?
Is there any other way to achieve the same by not using executeBatch()?
Can any one share a snippet of code to achieve this specific functionality?
[Need is to log the number of unsuccessful attempts along with their
    corresponding rows of data].
    Thanks & regards,
    Venkat Kosigi

executeBatch submits a batch of commands to the database for execution and if all commands execute successfully, returns an array of update counts. The int elements of the array that is returned are ordered to correspond to the commands in the batch, which are ordered according to the order in which they were added to the batch. The elements in the array returned by the method executeBatch may be one of the following:
-- A number greater than or equal to zero indicates that the command was processed successfully and is an update count giving the number of rows in the database that were affected by the command's execution
-- A value of -2 indicates that the command was processed successfully but that the number of rows affected is unknown
If one of the commands in a batch update fails to execute properly, this method throws a BatchUpdateException, and a JDBC driver may or may not continue to process the remaining commands in the batch. However, the driver's behavior must be consistent with a particular DBMS, either always continuing to process commands or never continuing to process commands.
If the driver continues processing after a failure, the array returned by the method BatchUpdateException.getUpdateCounts will contain as many elements as there are commands in the batch, and at least one of the elements will be the following:
-- A value of -3 indicates that the command failed to execute successfully and occurs only if a driver continues to process commands after a command fails.
return values have been modified in the Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition, version 1.3 to accommodate the option of continuing to proccess commands in a batch update after a BatchUpdateException obejct has been thrown.
Throws BatchUpdateException (a subclass of SQLException) if one of the commands sent to the database fails to execute properly or attempts to return a result set. The BatchUpdateException getUpdateCounts() method allows you to known the element who caused the fail identified by a -3 value.
    -- So, if you have a succesfully result, look for at the executeBatch returned array ( #values >= 0 ) + ( #values == -2 ) = successes
and if you have not a succesfully result, catching the BatchUpdateException take the array returned by the getUpdateCounts() method, and look for the position in which array values are -3. You could take the data at this position on batch and log it.
-- Other way to insert a bulk copy on database is to use a bcp command ( its not java, bcp is an independent command ) that allows you to do bulk inserts from file, indicate an error file, bcp will give to you as result a file with those lines not where inserted.
    I hope have help you.;)

  • Nokia Maps: No traffic even after successful updat...

Hi, I’ve been using Nokia Maps for my 5800 and have been very impressed (it’s not perfect but given it’s free...). However, the only one bit that seems to *never* work is the traffic updates (I have tried several times). When using navigation, I choose “update traffic”, it says “updated successfully” but I see no traffic anywhere (on the map, on the traffic update screen...).
Any ideas!? Traffic would be really useful!
(I am UK based using 5800 and v3.03 of Nokia Maps...and there has definitely been traffic when I’ve checked!)
    Solved!

    Hi,
I'm in the UK and was stuck in huge traffic jam on the M60 motorway yesterday and the ovi maps version 3.03 didn't show any traffic problems, despite having the phone report that it had successfully updated the traffic information.
    Any ideas what's going on?
    Dave.

  • HT4946 I have just (successfully) updated my iphone 4 with the i0s but cannot get my apps back. They are on my itunes on the computer but cannot transfer back onto my phone, can anyone help please?

I have just successfully updated my iphone 4 with the latest ios update but lost all my apps. I can find them on my itunes a/c but cannot get them to transfer back onto phone without downloading all again, what I am I missing?

Is "Sync Apps" in the apps tab checked? If it is and they still won't sync, uncheck it then run a sync, then recheck it and run the sync again. If that doesn't help, on the phone itself, go to your app store, tap on updates, then go to purchased, and tap the cloud button next to them to redownload.

Hi I just updated my payment option for app store but did not purchased anything but after successfully updation my a/c got deducted...why?

Each time that you add or change the card details on your account then a small temporary store holding charge may be applied to check that the card details are correct, that the card is active, and that it's registered to exactly the same name and address as on your iTunes account - it should disappear within a few days or so.
