Feedback Points

I've noticed the little blue bar under my name. I'm aware that you get points for providing "helpful" and "solved" answers.
I guess my question is does having a ranking give you anything other than being cool?
As far as I can tell there isn't any sort of reward (not that I'm actively seeking any, I enjoy helping people and would be posting here regardless). It's just that if there are fringe benefits for having more points I would like to cash in on those!
Cheers and thanks! I always come to the apple discussions w/problems. Great community of knowledgeable posters that really help.

It's not generally known that even a forum member of mid-level rank can be nominated as a Demi-God. See here.
...If the nomination is ratified, you are awarded a lightning bolt instead of a green star.
You sly fox you.

  • N8 bugs and feedback

    Hi there.
I was one of the lucky N8 winners at Qt-Dev-Days in Munich (fact or **bleep** competition) :-) and after using the phone for two weeks I have some bug reports and general feedback. Hopefully this is the proper place to report my problems... Before the n8 I was a n900 user and also had a 5800 XM.
    Bugs:
    1. The e-mail application and the widget (imap, configured for gmail and email for exchange with a MS server) doesn't sync properly. It knows of new e-mails, but it never deletes old messages unless I click on "synchronize". This behavior doesn't make sense and it's very annoying to keep seeing old e-mails on my inbox if I deleted or archived them (e.g.: via webmail).
    2. The calendar (synced via mail-for-exchange) has a problem similar to the e-mail via imap: it know of new entries, but it can't update entries. For example, I have meetings assigned for 6 months on my m-f-e calendar. If one of these meetings is updated (say, the time is changed), the calendar is not updated.
    3. On the web browser, there's no way to open links on new windows or create a new browser window. The browser knows how to switch windows if they're open by the website, but there's no way an user can open multiple windows.
    4. I don't know how to sync a "mail for exchange" calendar manually, couldn't find it anywhere.
    5. While searching for a way to sync my mail-for-exchange calendar, I tried a few "sync" options. I had nothing set up (no ovi account and the phone was not connected to a PC). I canceled every operation it was supposed to start and as a result of an software error somewhere, my full contact list was removed (zeroed). In other words, trying to find a way to sync my calendar, "I" ended up removing all my contacts.
    6. After clicking on "Applications" on the menu/grid, it sometimes takes too long to open the next level (the applications menu/grid). I end up clicking a second time and thus opening the video-editor (the next icon gets the "click").
    7. The phone keeps switching between wi-fi and 3G a lot, for no good reason. It also froze a few times when switching networks due to a bug somewhere in the network stack. It's a hard-to-reproduce problem, but anyway...
    8. The battery status is not calculated correctly. It stays in 100% for too long and starts dropping only after it's close to 80-70%. I believe it's a tradition of Nokia/Symbian phones to keep the level at 100% for longer than expected (so that the user believes the phone is good at battery consumption), but it makes far less sense with smartphones;
    9. I don't have a straightforward way to reproduce it, but some received calls are not associated with the respective contact, even though the number is correctly assigned to it (instead, the number is displayed). I even merged the just received call to the contact but new calls were still displayed as the number instead of the proper contact name. It used to work, I don't know why it doesn't anymore.
    Main feedback points:
    1. There should be no delay when switching "desktops" (workspaces);
    2. Some widgets on the homescreen are too small (e-mail, social). There should be an option for double-sized widgets;
    3. When answering or making a call, there are too many notifications ("requested modified", "active diverts", etc). I can't make/answer a call and imediatelly put it on speaker due to these;
    4.. There's an inconsistency on the way "popup menus" are handled: in some cases clicking outside of the menu closes it, in some other places I have to click on "cancel" (personally, I prefer to just click outside of the menu to close it);
    5. If the phone is blocked, I can't answer a call and put it on the speaker. That's very annoying (and the fact that using mail-for-exchange forces me to enable phone blocking doesn't help);
    6. The speaker is badly positioned: leaving the phone facing up (speaker is on the back) over a soft surface (e.g: a bed) will make it difficult to hear it.
    7. The browser is very very very weak. It's far below the expectations of a smartphone browser these days (usability wise);
    8. Skype (I know, I know, it's a third-party application) is very buggy (lots of problems: internet connection, rendering problems, sensors not working, etc).
That said, I still have faith in this phone. The hardware is great (camera, GPS, industrial design in general) but as usual the software is the bad guy. Hopefully the next updates will improve the usability and reliability of the phone.
    Cheers.

    Very good analysis!!
I agree with your points I have the same problems! AND MORE
    3.  I also add that it is bugged and often just kicks me out, some pages are impossible to open as it keeps on kicking me out!!!  Does not support column view, makes it tedious to read!  The solution for now is use Opera mobile.
8- Yes, also the bars are very confusing and do not correspond to the percentages.  It could show 6 ou of 7 bars (almos full), but when you look up the percentage is shows 40%!!
9- This problem could come from the fact that the number is introduced twice in our contacts, search and make sure it is not duplicated.
    Fed backs
2- most of all there should be some way to easily indicate that we have new mail!!  Like it does for missed calls and messages.
3- I hate the Nokia prompts, I do not understand they keep them on new models!!!  Ridiculous!  Still we now have less and are faster to disappear than what it was on the N95
5- I have the same problem!!!  How come it was overlooked.  All calling functions should be available when a call is received!
6- Skype and other applications are bugged and do not work properly, the worst for Skype is that you cannot have it connect to Wifi unless you put wifi as principal connection, a tediuos procedure.  But Panorama is developed by Nokia and you can find it in OVI store, complete **bleep**!!!
I also add that one cannot select several SMS and delete them, you have to delete all or do it one by one!!  Ridiculous
Managing Wifi in general is tedious
Even though you designate Opera as the default browser, it is not always so!
Here is more on the email server:
Sorry to inform that the Nokia N8 email server is inefficient and full of bugs:
1- When you want to open an email, you often get the retrieve sign and this could take up to several minutes! You get it again every time you want to answer or forward an email!
2- Some times emails get stuck in the "outbox". When this happens you are in deep trouble as the only thing you can do is erase it and start all over as it does not allow you to open it (unable to open while sending message), unable to move it to another folder and send it again, unable to force send it!
3- I set push email off from 10:30 pm to 6:00 am, so normally after 6:00 am, I should automatically get my emails, however it does not until I play with the phone and sometimes even recycle it.
3- It does not offer the resend option and in one has to tap the screen several times in order to get the keyboard for editing purpose
4- Does not have a column/wrap view for reading.
5- On the POP enterprise emails, there the problem is huge! Mega bugs: in addition to the problems/inefficiencies mentioned above, it does not keep a copy of the sent email in the "sent" box! This one is always empty. Does not send a deleted message to the "deleted items" box, emails are just lost in nature! And a couple times, once I downloaded my emails into Outlook on my PC, my Nokia just emptied my Inbox after it synchronized.
WE NEED AN URGENT FIX, ESPETIALLY FOR THE POP EMAIL BUGS. Once all of the above is fixed, then the Nokia N8 email server will be the best in the market (except for setting up POP email compared to BB, but this is just a one time inconvenience...)
Apparently NO BODY IN NOKIA IS LISTENING!!!

  • Read receipts in Messages for Mac appear to be incorrect.

My outgoing messages to a friend are getting marked Read instead of staying as Delivered.  I am certain that he does not have Read receipts on.
After some testing, it seems that it is my reading the messages on my iPhone that is triggering the Read receipt.

    Hi,
At present there is not a specific feedback point for Messages
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
I am only seeing "delivered" on IM in Messages (although sometimes the Phone has them)
The "Delivered" never appears on both.
Neither my son or myself have the "read" function ON in the settings on our phones.

  • Sniffer implementation

Based on the background information available from the forums, I have been able to understand that as Java does not have access to raw sockets, a packet sniffer cannot be implemented in Java alone. I would need some feedback on the following functionality for a project that I have been assigned to work on,
"For testing purposes, we need to create a version of the SMTP Interceptor that acts as a SMTP packet sniffer. This will allow us to create a non-intrusive agent on a network that, provided it is on the correct sub-net, should capture a copy of all SMTP network traffic without acting as a failure-point in the SMTP relay network."
I have looked around on the internet and found that there is an interface library Jpcap written in Java that can abstract over raw implementations for Windows/Linux. Our target test platform at the moment is Solaris, has anyone used the library for a similar project..any pointers to what approach would suit the requirements the best?
I do not have a great background in networking, could someone provide some feedback/point to resources on introduction to SMTP packets vis-a-vis their differences from normal HTTP packets etc.?
    Thanks

  • No service on "new" iPhone 4s

I recently bought a used iPhone 4S from a seller on ebay, which is locked to the Three UK network. I am a Three PAYG customer so I assumed that my microsim would work fine in the 4S. However, I cannot get service on the iPhone. It says "No Service" in the top left corner.
It works fine over wi-fi and I'm a but puzzled as to why this is happening. With my Android phone, I just had to pop the sim in and manually enter the internet settings. I cannot find this option in the settings on the 4S.
I may be missing something major as I'm completely new to 3G iOS devices (my only other Apple product is a wifi iPad 3rd gen). Thanks for any help.

I would hope that the phone isn't stolen. The seller had over 700 feedback points on eBay with 100% positive feedback. I'll contact Three.
Edit: I checked the serial number on the Service & Repair section of the Apple website and it is covered by warranty until April 20 2013 (like the seller said). Wouldn't it be marked as blacklisted or similar if it was a stolen product?

  • Problems using yahoo

yahoo updated their site. I can use like normal through explorer, but not through firefox. It shows that it is running slower than normal. I have no way to delete my emails. I can't sign out either, I can't use any of the functions while I am there. Please help..

Just trying to get a better web ;-)
Can you please help sending them some [http://feedback.islanddata.com/clientpages/yahoo/yahoomusicsite/feedback.aspx feedback] pointing them to the bug?
Perhaps Yahoo! Music would then realize I'm not the only one using Firefox =(

  • No service on new iphone after restore from old phone

I bought a new 5 and tried to set it up using itunes that I've always used with my old 3GS.  Has the latest OS, but it still isn't transferring the service to the new phone.  It has all the apps, but it has no phone service, which is still on my old phone.
    Thanks!

  • Running on a different port

    Hi all,
Don't know which forum would be right for this, so I post it in here.
We have one machine running some websites with IIS and on it we got a 10g database with the companion HTTP Server running as a gateway for dads to Intermedia on port 7777 (the installation default).
Now I would like to change that so that the Oracle HTTP Server listens on a specific IP address to port 80 as well. Thus I assigned two IP addresses to our network card (working), gave the IIS websites the other IP addresses (working) and configured httpd.conf to listen to port 80 and to listen to the other IP address. Now the problem is that this does not work at all.
Is there something else I am missing? Thank you for any feedback.

Point is that Apache from Oracle is differenlty configured and I don't see a virtual host container. I can run it successfully on the second IP address, but not on port 80. Now it runs on the second IP and still on port 7777.
I actually thought it is a simple matter of just chaning the port number in the conf file.

  • Problems using Yahoo Music - Internet Radio

Usually, I go to the page, click on the "start listening" button and new page loads (in another tab) and the internet radio begins. With FF5 a new page will not load - nothing happens, even tho I've told FF5 that there is an exception (or, I have tried several times - it does not retain the information) to the pop-up blocking. What can I do to fix this issue?
p.s. it works fine in IE, but I don't like that browser!! Yucky!

Just trying to get a better web ;-)
Can you please help sending them some [http://feedback.islanddata.com/clientpages/yahoo/yahoomusicsite/feedback.aspx feedback] pointing them to the bug?

  • Installator properties

    1. There is not informative build number in file OracleXE.exe properties. Property "file version" seems that 10.2.0.1.0 - Beta will be more usefully than 10.2. I'm downloaded second beta build two times with various file size, and have not possibility to check real file version.
    2. It seems that desktop shortcut “Get Started With Oracle Database Express Edition” will not be useful for customers when I’m deploying OracleXE with my product. There where have to be choice in instillation wizard to create menu, quick lunch and desktop items or not.
    3. Minimized into tray monitor to configure, run or stop server will be useful too.
    4. After bad installation first beta I’m have not any possibility to uninstall it, and can not install new version over old because wizard informs me that I have to uninstall previous first.

    All good feedback points. Thanks

  • Macbook Pro 2006 won't post, just fans

I have a 2006 macbook pro, and over the many years it slowly started to overheat until the typical GPU problem kicked in and the screen became fractured and the computer unusable. I baked the logic board, and it worked again, but only for a couple of months before the same problem repeated.
So I baked it again, applied Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound, and upon turning it on again, the hard drive would make mounting sounds and within 5 seconds the fans would be going at full speed, but nothing more. The display would show nothing and I would hear no chime.
I figured the board had had it, so I ordered a replacement from a 99.7% rated seller on ebay with tens of thousands of feedback points.
Upon installing the new one, I turned it on and had the same result. No display, no post, and high speed fans.
So now I am thinking that either this logic board is a dud too and I need another replacement, or that there is something else wrong with my computer other than the board.
Problem is, I can't imagine what else it could be. Is there anything other than a bad logic board that could cause this?
Does anybody have any advice for me?
    Thanks!

    Yeah. Cross posting is bad.
Normally I would answer in the other thread which is in the right forum at least but this one already has some actual content so here goes...
As mentioned above you seem to have confusion over protocols and how they fit together. There is such a thing as an HTTP protocol and a SMTP protocol but when you say "packets" you've kind of gone off the rails. Both HTTP and SMTP sit on top of the actual networki0ng protocol TCP/IP.
In a general way here is what you can do vs what you can't do in Java.
You can do anything you want with a protocol that sits on top of TCP/IP. This covers HTTP, SMTP, POP, FTP, DNS, various database connections... the list goes on. What's key about all these is these protocols don't actually rely on any behaviour of TCP, packets or the stack. They just do their thing... abstracted if you will from what the OS actually sends and recieves over the network.
What you can't do in Java is basically funky TCP stuff that requires access to the TCP stack or other protocol guts. These types of tools are things like ICMP. Basically if you want to do low level network detection, configuration, information gathering than Java is not the way to go.
Java is also not suitable for writing firewalls or general sniffers if you want to see what is going on at the TCP level or want to block things or scan or monitor things at that level.
    So back to your question....
As jverd impiled you can certainly run a proxy-ish tool in Java that can intercerpt and log various HTTP and SMTP messages. Basically you are writing a proxy server and logging the intervening messages. I wouldn't bother to do something like this for testing though because there are many existing logging/tracing proxy servers out there and available for free already. I can't think of any off the top of my head but I did use an HTTP proxy that showed me requests about 2 years ago so I know they exist.
A couple of points I think that are worth keeping in mind.
    1) You can't proxy HTTPS (secure sockets HTTP). Because doing so of course busts up the idea of security and if this was possible imagine how bad things would be. This may not be a problem for you but I just thought I'd mention it.
    2) If you proxy and SMTP server I would suspect that depending on how it is set up mail may well bounce. This is because there are more and more anti-spam measures taking place all the time... many of which have to do with stopping open relays and simple checks (like reverse DNS) that will mean that your normal SMTP server would be able to send mail properly but your proxied one won't. Again this is probably as it should be but it could make things difficult for testing.
Bottom line with both of these is that most of the testing you will be doing will I hope entirely be in your own little network where you can get around these difficulties.
As far as protocols... HTTP and SMTP are both text based and dead simple really . If you want to learn them do a search on google for them with RFC. This will lead you to some very lengthy and incredibly boring documents but all the specs are in them. Once upon a time I learned the makeup of both proctols from them so I know it can be done...
for awhile I was sending email by telneting into SMTP servers directly but that's a sad story in a way I suppose but I do offer it as proof that really it isn't that tricky.
    Good luck to you.

How do I suppose to report bugs?

I did that, but it's a kind of frustrating to go to that option in the brand new fcpx and find that support page doesn't know there is a new version of FCP.

  • [newbie] Sharing anchor points across paths/shapes? + Pen visual feedback? + Show all paths?

Hey all, as stated I'm a newbie at Illustrator. Any help's appreciated. My questions:
    1) Is it possible to have anchor points be part of more than 1 path? I want to have 2 adjacent filled paths that share anchor points, so that if I move the common edge anchors, both shapes are affected. Kinda like in Flash, I suppose.
My guess is this is impossible though? Then how do people working with Illustrator a lot tackle this problem? I mean adjusting 2 shapes with several common anchor points (not shared, just in the same position), for adjacent shapes.
    2) Is it possible to set the Pen tool to give visual feedback like in Photoshop when moving the mouse to a new position to add a new anchor point? What Photoshop does is show the path segment that would be created if you were to click at the current mouse position, whenever you move the mouse. Illustrator doesn't show this with me right now, so I'm left to guess what the exact path segment will look like when I click (less convenient imo).
    3) Is there a way to always show all paths on the current layer, even if they are not selected? And I do NOT mean Outline mode, I'm aware of that. The problem I'm facing is that - when working with multiple paths - I want to see them all when adding a new path, so I can easily align anchor points and what not with the other paths, but I do NOT want to hide the image I'm tracing (which would happend in Outline mode).
    Thanks in advance.
    Victor

You might get what you re after using Live Paint. Here I have drawn an oval and a wavy line — two paths. After converting to a Live Paint object I can selectively fill and stroke any closed area or and segment.
    No.
Put the object or image you are tracing on a Template layer. Or Command (Mac) or Control (Windows) click on the eye next to a layer name to change only that layer’s view mode.
