  • What would you most like to see in a future version?

I'm pretty sure the DSC development team looks at these posts so what would you most like to see in the future? For me, I'd like to be able to dynamically add tags without shutting down the engine.

    Robert

In "context help". No more "no description available". At least give me the data type.

  • As a second browser, what do you all recommend?

    Firefox?
    Camino?
    Opera?
    other?
What do you all suggest as a second browser in addition to my faithful Safari for use with Tiger?
    Thanks,
    Mrs H

I've recently switched over to Firefox from Safari, which I'm using pretty exclusively now, only because you can run an add on from there called NoScript. NoScript prevents many potential web based exploits and keeps ad and data tracking services like doubleclick and others out. And as a default, which can easily be changed per site, it also keeps out Flash (and annoying Flash ads). NoScript can be a bit of a pain to get used to at first. But It learns your preferences as you visit sites, and after a while pretty much gets out of the way. It can still be a little annoying, but it's worth it.

The other add on I run with FF is called WOT or Web of Trust which rates sites according to several different criteria. It gives you some idea what you might be getting into so you can be forewarned. It will even show ratings for sites resulting from a Google search.
    http://www.mywot.com/
There's also available an add on called AdBlock Plus, maybe not quite as important as the other two, but I also run it.
Many are also of the opinion that Firefox is just a safer browser than Safari and that Apple is slow to implement fixes for known or potential exploits.
If only these, or something like them were available for Safari, which I still basically prefer. Safari does seem to run a little faster than Firefox for me. It all seems to depend on the particular configuration which browser will run faster. But I've decided that safety trumps speed.
It's a little inconvenient, but it doesn't take that long to move passwords over from Safari manually. Just open up Keychain and look at them there. You can also, automatically, import all your Safari bookmarks.

  • So what do you all do?

I've picked up over the past year or so that I've been relatively active here, that we've got users of PrPro who do all sorts of work. Just curious, what do y'all do for your primary jobs, and how does PrPro work into your job?
I'm the media specialist for Bryan College, a four-year liberal arts college in Dayton, TN. I'm responsible for all the promotional video for the college, but frequently get re-tasked to other things like graphic design, web development, and other things pertaining to advancement and fundraising for the college. I got my start owning a recording studio and doing live sound, and transitioned to video when I got hired at Bryan in 2008. I use PrPro almost daily (except for the past nine months when I was working on the college's new website).
In addition to working at Bryan, I hire myself and our equipment out to local organizations and companies to do video production. I've done pro-bono productions for our local Rotary, did a paid production for The United Way here in our county, and am finishing up a paid commercial production for La-Z-Boy.

I am owner operator of a small production company in Auckland , New Zealand.
Company is based around me as a Cameraman / Director....( "its all about me")
Crew and most resources are out sourced on a production by production basis.
Have small pack shot studio, HD cameras, some lighting and grip gear, some audio record gear.
There are now 2 operational edit suites ( All Adobe - Windows) - plus fully functional CS2 and CS3 systems if they need to be fired up for legacy projects.
Generally we work cross platform with other facilties.  Works very well
Web site tells you more or less what we do  and shows  demo reels.

I also freelance as D.P , Director or aerial cameraman specialist

I'm building a new PC for using video editing softwares with because my old one is getting tired. I'd like to know what people think of that configuration. I plan on using this computer with the latest versions of After Effects and Premiere, i'm also beginning to learn Cinema 4D.

  • Local Backups - What are you all using?

We are looking for an opiton for local backup of clients workstations. Sure in some places we don't bother backing up clients stations but we often need to. Having a backup drive on each system gets a bit impractical, Retrospect is dead, and Time Machine via OSX Server hasn't worked with it's meany issues.
There has got to be a backup product out there to allow a system to be backed up to a NAS or Drive attached to a server that is as simple as CrashPlan or TimeMachine but that actually work and don't cost $50/month for a system.
    Thoughts?

CrashPlanPROe, the enterprise version, is $60 per year per client, not $50 per month, so it may be worth looking into. It's what we run and it's been working very well for us, though you need a central server to run the software. That server can be Windows, Mac OS X, Linux or Solaris, any of which will work with any of the supported clients:

We tried Retrospect and had to return it for the limitation I mentioned above.

  • Just curious: What do you all guys use FCP for?

    Just wondering.
Does everybody work in TV or production companies. FCP is such a powerful tool... Only people working for TV networks and cables use it, right?

Sometimes it's used as a paperweight, sometimes it's used as a room heater. And sometimes I use it as my personal hair stylist, it gives me this little "gray" highlights! So many uses!
Back to your question, not necessarly. I've used it for Feature Films. I've worked on shows that were all offlined of FCP and Finished on Final Cut. some of them do their VFX I/O through Final Cut.
I've done work on 2 Feature Films on FCP. Blonde and Blonder and Christmas in Wonderland. So it goes beyond television and news.

  • Tell us here what changes you want to see in the SpeedGrade forum.

Welcome to the new SpeedGrade user-to-user forum.
We're just getting started here, so there are very likely things that we'll need to add or change to make this forum as useful as it can be for you. Let us know what changes you'd like to see.
Content from the previous IRIDAS SpeedGrade forum has not been ported to this new forum.
If there is content from that forum that you would like to see made available, let us know, and we'll see what we can do.

I think we need subsections for the "old" legacy products, pretty much like the old forum was organized.
I understand that this forum is now the official end user forum, right?
We are also interested in seeing a beta forum as well (as we currently see it with other Adobe apps) so we can participate there as well. Please take notice
I am sure that is a LOT of useful information in the old forums. Maybe there is a way of having that old content get consolidated in terms of digest PDF for "new" users to use search within. I don't think it makes a lot of sense to let one dig through thousands of text entries manually to find the useful information, especially as much of this changed over time as "work in progress". Tipps from 2 years ago may be completely useless now with newer tools, and so on. So I vote for pumping out the old content into a PDF or something, so we have that all "at hand". Honestly, as we long term users didn't know of the deal before it happened, all that information was apparently gone before we could "safe it" for our own purposes. Thats what I am looking for right now.
That PDF could be linked in a sticky closed thread like "IRIDAS User Forum content until September 2011" or similar. Just an idea.
    Good luck with the forum!
    Cheers,
    Axel

  • Homesite Future - What would you want changed?

There have been threads debating whether HomeSite was
orphaned or whether it would be upgraded or not. Since none of us
know, those are mainly ways we've all been expressing our
    frustration.
Someone pointed out to me recently how useful HomeSite is
even now "as it is" (which I knew of course), but he also
enumerated some good arguments why there might not be much demand
for HomeSite to be upgraded. If fact he has trouble sometimes
convincing people to upgrade from HS 4.5, even when they already
have HS 5.5+ on a DW CD. While I disagree on some of his arguments,
he has a good point that
putting development resources into doing an upgrade only makes
sense for Adobe if there are compelling enough reasons for users to
pay to buy the new version.
Anyway, I have no idea if this is how Adobe is thinking, or
really what they are thinking at all, but I thought I'd start a
thread to see what you all think on this question.
What updates, features or fixes to HomeSite would you be most
    interested in?
(to the point of being willing to pay for an upgrade,
    assuming cost is reasonable)
Or some more detailed rephrasings that might jog your mind:
    - What things would you be willing to pay (a reasonable amt) to
    upgrade to get?
    - Or what things would make you look elsewhere because they
    aren't in HomeSite?
    - What bugs or things about HS drive you nuts?
    - What do you need/want to do in HomeSite that can't be done
    using it's extensions?
So, anyone willing to put some thought into it? Please be
honest, not just posting little gripes, or things that would be
nice, but that you wouldn't be willing to shell out some $ for.
(you can post those things too, but please note which are which.)
And let's keep the scope here on this, not on the broader
arguments about whether Adobe will or should do patches or upgrades
or whether their dogs have fleas. We can use other threads for
    that. ok? ;-)
    thanks!!
    jeff
p.s. No, this isn't Adobe's way of doing a user survey on the
cheap, it's just me posting to see what you all care about.
If it gives them motivation to do something - great, but this
is for us to talk together about what you think really *needs*
    improvement in HS.

The most important change for me would be the capability to
    use Unicode.
Neither editor I use (HS and Topstyle) support Unicode. The
    first to do
this will draw many users from the other. This lack of
    Unicode is a
    major stumbling block to me.

  • BBC Watchdog what do you think?

I'm now so sick and tired of BT's pathetic broadband service I'm considering going to Watchdog as BT seem to be doing NOTHING.
I've seen endless posts on here all about the same thing Slow Speeds for no reason. I find it a huge coincedence that allot of people lost their service on the 24th-26th Dec in particular.
Maybe a bit of bad press might get them sorting things out for a change. Why should we be nice loyal customers when they aren't loyal to us! What are your views on this?

There were many factors over Christmas - weather being one of them that must have caused line issues, then there are the additional number of wireless devices turned on for christmas which inevitably must have caused additional strain on home networks and demand on the internet. Such things as Network traffic are beyond the control of BT.
At the end of the day we have a C20th copper wire network struggling to cope with C21st demands. Replacing this by fibre optic takes time and money.
I do agree with the sentiment that speeds should be as offered and there are other ISP's that do claim guarenteed speeds with no throttling - I was very tempted to go with BE this time until I discovered O2's involvement. However I feel that if every BT Brodaband user were to go the BE then they would not be able to meet their claims as their equipment installed at exchanges would not be able to cope. BT on the other hand would find the capacity and be able to make fresh guarantees about speeds.
Given the increasing choice of TV's with built in Wi Fi and offers of streamed services such as YouTube, I do feel that if you are going to use that option as opposed to cable or satellite for your viewing pleasure - then yes someone should pay for it to contribute to the investment required to deliver these services. Preferably it should be the provider of the service or the supplier of the equipment, but of course it will be the end user who will pay in some way through advertising or a price premium. It is only when we have acheived a network capable of delivering the standard of service we all want to see (guaranteed minimum speeds for all of 20meg) should those costs go down but there should be ongoing contributions for maintenance and future improvements.
After all BT Vision demand can only affect the demands on the BT Network and the extra you pay for it must in part go to BT Wholesale to contribute to costs.
I personally would like to see the ownership of BT Wholesale seperated from the rest of BT so that it was funded by all the ISP's and seen as a seperate non profit making Company that had to meet the demands of its ISP Customers and invest all its income into its services. If someone like Virgin Media wanted to pay more towards the Fibre Optic rollout that would enable them to reach more end users then that investment would benefit all ISP's as a whole.  If BTW were not delivering then BT would be a very loud voice in asking why not? At present that voice is muted because of BTW being part of the BT Group. The other ISP's might make noises but BT Group hold all the cards.

  • CUDA Cores is what it's all about right ? - just looking at specs 680/580/470

    Hi guys,
Was just looking at the specs for the new Nvidia GTX 680, the 580 and the 470 which I own currently.
    CUDA Cores
    GTX 680 - 1536
    GTX 580 - 512
    GTX 470 - 448
First off, - wow !  ... the 680 specs are amazing.
Second thought - I was really thinking of jumping to the GTX 580 instead of the 680 to save money ( 580 pricing will be dropping dramatically in the coming months )
However.... after seeing the CUDA cores with my own eyes, it seems like a less than brilliant choice to even put money into the 580 at this point.
The 470 could do 448 cuda cores, and the 580 only jumps to 512 ... hardly a jump at all.  Going from 448 CUDA cores to 1536 is just well, mind popping.
What do you all say ?  thoughts ?
    Thanks !
    Dave.

Be aware that although the new 680 GTX has 3x as many cuda cores, its only 2x as far as performance is concerned.
They're not the same type of cuda core from the last generation, fermi. They got rid of the shader clock which was 1.4ghz+ in the past, and now the cuda cores run at the 'core' clock, which is significantly less. Because they dropped the clock, they tripled the cuda cores and in turn got around 2x the performance.
My eyes lit up when I saw the first specs of 1500 cuda cores but then I knew something was up. They only dropped one node, how could they triple the cores?
Anandtech has a great article explaining it. Keplar's (680) cuda cores aren't apple to apple comparisons to Fermi's (580). No shader clock, smaller memory bus but 3x the amount...cant wait for the real kepler big card, not the dual-gpu one either..

  • What do you use to make Gnome apps look good in KDE4?

What are you all using to make Gnome apps (like Firefox, Gimp, Inkscape.. etc) look good in KDE (I am using KDEmod).
I tried Qtcurve (I think it works the best), gtk-qt-engine (for some reason it didn't seem to work for me) and others...
I want to hear opinion from other people (who use KDE or possibly KDEmod) and who are probably using Arch longer than me. This is my first successful Arch install.

  • Family Data Pricing (What do you think would be fair?)

Currently people are getting ripped off for $30 data plans and I assume many use under 1GB per month. Because of this many cannot afford data plans for their family.
I use around 150MB 3G each month, the rest is over WIFI.
    Questions:
    1. How much data do you use each month? (Found through MyVerizon)
    2. How do you think Verizon is going to set up family data?
    3. How much should a family of 4 pay for family data if each of them gets 2GB each considering what I said above about many not even using 1GB (although is is probably rapidly changing with video calls and 4G LTE). I still think people on average use less then 2GB.
I would have to say $70 for 8GB for the family to share. $17.50 per person. At that figure I think we would start to see a lot more smartphones being sold but I'm sure my figure is really low by Verizon's standard.
So, what do you all think Verizon will do with pools of data? Speculate on prices and amount of data.

Verizon has a $20/300MB data plan, which I have with an iPhone.
    1. I used 75MB or less each month (I have used 75MB once).
    2. Verizon is either going to add it as an option in current shared plan or create a separate data share plan (I''m thinking the later).
    3. I would prefer not paying for data and just using WiFi, but I would say for a family/share plan no more than $20/GB on the account level.

  • For the average person what really is the point of the activity monitor app when all you really want to know is whether your mac is running at its best?

I have had my imac for nearly 18 months now,
It's okay, is the best I can say about it.
    It cost me around £800+
So recently (and foolishly!) I downloaded OS Mavericks when I was actually looking for a freebie word processor programme (I got Bean because it's simple like me.)
Now the point of all this is that Mavericks has new features like a redesigned Safari (But I ain't noticed any difference yet) and Imaps (Huh!) and Ibooks and Imovie or something.
So when you are oldish like me, you really don't want people to keep changing and introducing new stuff (most of which is pointless anyway) all the time; because it takes us old ***** a while to get used to the last "improvement."
So you try and get rid of all these new apps that you don't want and didn't ask for anyway,
and then you find out you can't, because they're an integral part of the new OS.
    Brilliant!
Then you find that Mail has to redo itself and this thing no longer works properly etc. and you start wishing you hadn't got up that morning...
So you try and get it all back the way it was..
    And you can't.
Because you don't have an external hard drive to use the Time machine back up facility.
So you get in touch with Apple Support and it's now nearly bedtime, but at least you feel like you might be gettin' somewhere.
You talk to the supportguy and suddenly you can't remember what the problem is and what your name is, and you're thinking you might as well order in a pizza seein' as you've drunk the last of the gin..."
Anyway the guy manages to keep his temper and you get some degree of order restored but the machine still seems "jumpy" so someone says to you
"Check out the Activity Monitor! That'll tell you if something's not working right."
So you do, but it doesn't.
Just a bunch of numbers and CPU stuff and User Idiot Input etc.
All you really want is some little box to pop up and say,
"Hey! yyyou've really ssscrewed things upppp-p here, old mmmmman!!. This programme is no longer functioning properly, that thing appears to frozen, and you just wiped half your saved photos of Aunt Jessie's 94th birthday celebration (the one's where she had her eyes open)..
Press here for a full maintenance overview and repair menu.."
By this time you are on the floor, your leg's got cramp and you really really need a pee.
But there ain't no maintenance programme, just an activity monitor app you can't make any sense out of, so you yank the **** power cord out of the socket and go to bed..
    So you try and

DVD-R media that is single layer has 4.3 GB formatted capacity.
DVD+R DL media has 7.8 GB formatted capacity.
DVD-R double sided has 4.3 GB on each side.
