Feeling Stupid -- How does drive fit?

Okay, I bought a new internal hard drive ([this one|http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136197]) in order to increase my drive space from 120GB to 320GB.
The new drive comes with a green board and various components on it, while the original drive in my MB does not have that. The board means that the replacement drive doesn't fit the allotted space, of course. Did I buy the wrong drive?
I also thought I could just swap my old drive into an enclosure (I purchased [this one|http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MSTG400U2>), but it seems that the green board would be necessary for that.
Any ideas what I've done wrong or not done at all? I just don't see how to work this out.

Yes, I did purchase an empty drive (the link is in my original post). But that enclosure has no board in it, so it needs the one attached to whichever drive I end up putting into it. To recap:
1. I have a 120GB drive (with an apparently small green board) in my MB.
2. I have the replacement 320GB drive to replace the 120GB drive; the 320GB drive has a longer green board than the other one, and it contains a place to plug in firewire and/or USB cables.
3. I have an empty enclosure I'd intended for the 120GB drive.
I hope I'm not confusing you with the way I'm writing -- if you need any further details, I'll be happy to supply them. One problem I have is that this is my only Mac (or computer, for that matter), so I have to put everything back together again in order to access this forum. <G>

How you choose to go forward is up to you. Some folks go all-in with the new app, some may hold back to see how it develops over time. But eventually, iPhoto will no longer work.

Feeling Stupid - How Do I Sync iTouch w/iCal

I'm going berserk - I have spent probably 3 hours total trying to figure out how to sync my new (and first) iPod/iTouch w/iCal. I've gone to iCal help and thought I got close but no luck.
I'm pulling my hair out. Why doesn't it just SYNC AUTOMATICALLY when I plug the iPod into the computer??? What do I need to do??

Using Supplier Scheduling along with eCommerce; how does this fit into ASCP

Hi,
In Oracle 11i we are using Supplier Scheduling along with eCommerce to publish our MRP forecast via EDI 830/DELFOR. We use autoScheduling which requires MRP and in 11i we run MRP, so it all works well.
Now we are moving to 12i and using ASCP (Advanced supply chain planning) and I understand that we do not need to run MRP any more. ASCP in conjunction with PS (Production Scheduling) will do the trick.
Given this situation how can I use Supplier Scheduling / eCommerce to publish EDI 830/DELFOR?

With Mountain Lion Developer release, and most likely the finished release having all updates via the App store, how does ARD fit into the picture?

The following question is based on what I have seen in some early reports of the Developer version of Mountain Lion.
Since the Developer Release of Mountain Lion, and the final version also I expect, having all updates being installed via the App Store by the user, how is a administrator to keep hundreds of systems current with all updates? The App Store requires, at least in its current version, a user to log in with their Apple Account ID and password even to do no cost updates. In an Enterprise operation I expect a number, maybe the majority of users will just not bother to do the updates.
Is there some way to use ARD to handle keeping Mountain Lion systems fully updated from an ARD Admin system? Is there a backdoor for updating systems?

No one is going to be able to discuss how ARD might work with Mountain Lion since anyone running an ML system is under nondisclosure and cannot discuss it publicly. All anyone here can talk about is how ARD can (or cannot, as the case may be) be used to keep Lion systems updated.
At this point I don't see any easy option in ARD to run Mac App Store updates, but it might be possible to script that, though whether that could run in background, as OS updates can, or on a system without a user logged in I don't know. Someone else here may be able to offer insight. For enterprise-level management I think most people have more-or-less given up on ARD as their primary tool, though, and moved to one of the third-party solutions.

I give up Mainstage is useless how does everyone else feel?

I'm a working musician and have been using Logic for over 3 years for live performance. Imagine the joy I had last September when I learned that Mainstage was available. I was the first in my town to purchase the upgrade to Logic 8, I quickly installed it, read the manual, did some configuring hoping that mainstage would be the answer I had been waiting for for years.
Well initially I was impressed. There were some problems but I knew Apple would be right on them and a solution would be at hand shortly.
I upgraded to Leopard, had more problems, downloaded all the updates, prokits, etc. etc. had more problems! Called Support, subscribed to all the boards......yada yada yada
Took my Macbook Pro into my dealer got it checked, added more ram, even added a larger internal drive to fit all of Logic 8 on. Bought a cooling desk. Wrote and Apple Script, +*nothing helped*+
It just seemed to get worse
Finally yesterday I had a spare 5 hours so I stripped Leopard off reinstalled Tiger, Logic Studio and the rest of my stuff from scratch believing that the problem was Leopard related, even that didn't work. Mainstage still clicked, popped, puked ..................... pick an adjective.
I've been a loyal Apple customer since 1980 (I had an Apple II Plus) I currently own 3 Macs. I am really disappointed in the support this product has seen from Apple. The loss of faith in this product is apparent by the drop off in messages on all the discussion boards and this is a dangerous thing to a company I believed put it's customers first.
I have decided to give up on Mainstage I will go back to using my synths to play gigs. I feel I have come to the table to try and get Mainstage running unfortunately Apple hasn't

I have voiced my opinion about MainStage since the beginning, thinking that maybe Apple or people who have access to the MainStage developers, would read the posts here and try and get some of these issues resolved.
MainStage is a great program conceptually. Compared to a lot of similar hosting programs out there, it has some nice implementation ideas such as sounds gradually fading out during patch changes so that reverb tails aren't cut off, extensive keyboard splits / layers, etc. and a pretty cool on screen layout for nice feedback during a live gig. There are some things that I wish Apple would have put in the program, like the ability to control external midi hardware.
However, in spite of these great ideas and thoughts, the developers, in my opinion, didn't make sure the program was rock solid as it should be for a live application. If this were a program that you could use and be able to do retakes, make corrections along the way, etc., then these bugs would be accounted for by the user and dealt with. But for a live app, when you are playing in the middle of a song, where you only get one chance to make it right, and the application locks, pops, clicks, etc. in a sporadic and unpredictable fashion, it is absolutely unacceptable.
I agree, most of the people who posted here back in the beginning have stopped because it didn't seem to make any difference. And there is usually a few users who have perfect systems. I have tried various ways to eliminate the unpredictable nature of MainStage but no such luck. Even last night at rehearsal, everthing seemed to be going along fine through the four first songs. I only had about 7 or 8 patches total and my memory usage was at about 30%. Then I change patches so we can start working on song #5. For this song I use a Native Instruments B4 patch (which also was one of two patches used in the previous song I just played). I have used this instrument many times and it has performed very well for the most part except for the occasional CPU spikes. I got about 2/3 of the way through the song and then noticed something ... I had no more sound coming from my instrument. I looked over at my MacBook and to my dismay, it was totally locked up. Needless to say, I wasn't able to finish the song because I had to reboot my machine. I know others may chime in here and ask if I had this configured or that ... and yes I have done all of these ad naseum ... this machine is soley devoted to my music rig, so its not like I am using it for games, word processing and everthing else. The bottom line is, this is another example of how quality control for this app and maybe Leopard in general has gone out the window.
I really like MainStage, I have invested a lot of time setting things up to replace my Logic live rig and have tried to hang in there hoping help would be on the way. I am not even asking for the ability to control external midi equipment (though that would be nice), I would just like to have a dependable piece of software that is made for live use, not just a toy to jam with friends in the Garage.

9.5mm is indeed Apple's maximum-height specification for all the unibody MBPs, but here's a service that offers to install the 12.5mm-high WD 750GB drive in any unibody MBP or in the pre-unibody 17" MBP:

They don't mention the 1TB WD drive, but it's the same size as the 750. I've just taken a careful look inside my late-2008 15" MBP, and it appears that there is in fact a little extra room there for a taller drive. I can't measure exactly how much, but the link above suggests that it's at least 3mm.
Apple may just have failed to anticipate the introduction of 12.5mm 2.5" drives and specified what was for some time a "standard" 2.5" drive height, calling it a maximum when in fact it really wasn't. This is a pure guess on my part.
Note that myservice is asking a fancy price for the installation, which does include data transfer but doesn't include shipping your machine to them. Unless they modify the machine or the drive in some way to fit it in, there's no very good reason to pay myservice for the installation. If I wanted a 750GB drive, I'd buy and install it myself and do my own data transfer by cloning, saving a bundle. If myservice does modify the drive or computer in any way, they should say so, because it will undoubtedly impact warranty coverage.

You need a Firewire 800 to 400 adapter or cable or a external USB 2/3 drive (self powered) it can default to the old USB the G5 uses 1 or 2.

How does Time Machine handle disconnected external media drive ?

I have an external drive connected to my iMac, and backup to a Time Capsule.
I prefer not to keep that external media drive connected all the time...
When I disconnect that external media drive and Time Machine runs, does TM perceive this as "deleted"?
With that drive disconnected, does TM then "release" the prior media drive backup and replace it as it needs space?
When I reconnect the external Media Drive, does TM see it as "new" or recognize it as the prior data and (presuming it's not over-written it) simply manage it incrementally?
Ultimately - do I need to either ensure that the external media drive is always available to use TM, or do I run the risk of screwy / uncertain behavior if it is sometimes present, sometimes not.

Correct. Except.......if the backup drive is close to becoming full, Time Machine will start to delete the oldest backups to make room for new backups.
So, if you have been backing up the external drive for the last year, and the backup drive is running out of space, you may not be able to go back a full year in Time Machine to see exactly how the external drive looked a year ago. You might only be able to go back 10 months, for example, instead of 12.
Most users really don't ever need to go back more than a few weeks or maybe a month or two to pick up a file that they might have accidentally deleted, so the fact that you might not be able to go back a full year or more to see how the drive looked at that time in the past, is not really that important for most users.
Most of us need to know that we have a complete, up to date backup of the external drive in case it fails.
Time Machine will warn you whenever it starts to delete the oldest backups, so if you really do need to be able to go back a year, or two years, or however long it has been since you originally started to back up the external......and you don't want Time Machine to start deleting the oldest backups of the external to make more room.....then you will need to add another backup drive and start backing up everything to that new drive.

How does playing a file in iTunes that resides on a mounted server drive look to IT department. I'd like to play some tracks I saved on our Xserve. It is our (Marketing) server and I am the Admin, but I was curious how the traffic looks to IT. This server is attached to the company wide network but only Marketing has access. Will playing the file show up to IT as streaming audio or just appear as file activity?
