Feels like a virus please help

My computer is acting weird. Almost all programs are no longer working. Everything quits, from system profiler, photobooth, installer, to Quicktime, & QuarkXpress. Programs that open are missing letters in the menu bars and websites like aol also have letters missing. Please help everything worked fine yesterday, and I have tried restarting several times.

From the fact that you are running 10.4.10 You've had your Mac for quite a while apparently without previous problems.
Let me re-assure you that it's highly unlikely that you have a virus and I'm not aware of any hacker issues likely to affect you either.
I don't know whether you are familiar with routine maintenance procedures which you can do yourself.
Let me start with repair permissions. For this you open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder. In the LH column select your internal hard drive, eg Macintosh HD (or whatever other name it has been given), then click on Repair permissions on the RH side. If there is a list of ...is..., should be... and at the end of the process (about 10 mins) 'Permissions repaired'. Run the repair again to ensure that all repairs have been done. It's a good idea to restart the computer. If there is no longer any problem you have solved your problem. Otherwise,
1) Ensure that you have a backup of all files you don't want to lose - buy an external drive (firewire preferably) if you don't already have one, big enough to copy the whole of your hd and use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner for your backup.
2) Startup from the original installation dvd by inserting it, restarting holding the c key til you see the Apple logo. Select your language if that's the first screen. On the next screen go to Tools/Disk Utility but this time do a Repair disk after selecting your hd. If any repairs were necessary rerun this until there are no more unless you get a message 'Repairs unable to be repaired' or similar. If repairs were needed restart as normal and check whether the problem has gone. If still no luck:
3) Download the combo version of 10.4.11 from Apple/Support/Downloads and instal this. After installation do another Repair permissions then check whether the problem persists.
Please let us know which process has given success, if any.

    iOS updates can take a while, try back in an hour or so. My iPad took half an hour for an incremental update. And that was on a fast home WiFi.

    I think you answered your own question. As your friends phones are not iPhones, but maybe Nokia or Android the smiley will appear as a different character or box. Thew only way to fix this would be to send a basic smile using the basic keyboard so that your friends will receive it as a smile and you will when they reply. Or ask your friends to check if the phones they are using have the emoji type keyboard available and ask them to update their phones. This will show the smiley when they reply to you.

    Did you ever figure out how to get them back? The same thing happened to me yesterday. I was able to open the file in VLC media player (you can download this app), but the file had been corrupted. It was only the last clip I had recorded, all the others were lost. Even the clip that will play is messed up

  • I think my Qosmio has a virus: please help me

    Hello, I have a Toshiba Qosmio laptop, and it has worked perfectly for 2 years. But about 2-3 months ago, it started acting very strange. Random music that is NOT anything I have in my Media Player or Music Library will start playing. It just happened a few minutes ago when I was watching a DVD. Nothing else was running, just the Toshiba DVD Player. The random music also happens sometimes when I just start the machine.
    Also, my computer will not go on the Internet anymore. That web tries to pull up, then it just freezes, and I have to start the task manager to end it. It's driving me crazy!
    Now, I have already sent it in to Toshiba repair services, and they sent it back & said there were no problems found. So that was a big waste of time. So now I'm looking for some real help.
    I had Norton Anti-Virus installed, and when I first ran it, it found a Trojan Gen 2, I believe? This was over a year ago, so I don't remember exactly what it was called. Every other time I ran Norton, all it ever found were tracking cookies. I also had Spybot Search & Destroy, but it never seemed to find anything either.
    I don't know what else to do... I am NOT computer savvy at all, and what I've done above is about as good as my knowledge gets. Please help me... I really love my laptop, and want to fix it somehow.
    *Edit to add: it is an X505-Q885, and has Windows 7, if that helps at all.

    You can always try the system restore back in time, of which is but one solution, when computer was working without problems.  (Start>Control Panel>System and Security>Action Center>There are also many other options for trouble shooting your computer besides restoring to a previous time.)
    There’s, of course, always one option, not a first option but I use on my Qosmio X505 many times.  Program files gets corrupted, virus attacks, or conflicts in programs, after simple solutions do not work, instead of spending hours trying various remedies, I restart my computer with original factory setting.  (This usually happens to my computer after updates.)
    I use the recovery disk. If you use this method you have to have all files backed up, because your hard drive is going to be wiped clean. Moreover, you will be spending hours updating and putting back your programs back to the computer.  You should read MY TOSHIBA program file and USER GUIDE, pg. 61, if you decide to do this.

    It appears like you may have a hardware issue with your ringer button and internal speaker that came to light after the update. If you have already restored your iPhone back to factory settings using iTunes, you may need to have your phone serviced.
    Some potential good news... Check your headphone jack for lint. There may be enough to cause a muffled connection. You can try to blow it out with compressed air or very carefully pulling out any solid objects that may affect the connection.

    BUT... when your one year Education account ends, I do not think you will be able to renew at the Education rate

  • Disappearing Applications - Feels Like a Virus...

    My computer's been behaving really strangely today. First, I tried to open Quicksilver from the Dock, and Quicksilver's missing. (I've deleted nothing, and used the program yesterday.) This morning I was able to use Firefox. I turned off my computer in the middle of the day, and when I turned it on tonight and tried to open Firefox, I get nothing -- it's like the icon in the Dock is a broken link. The application's missing. And it's not in the Trash -- it's nowhere to be found! The aliases in the Applications folder, when clicked, turn up the "original item could not be found" error message.
    Aside from this, my computer has recently -- in the past two weeks -- taken to giving PDF and Word files downloaded from email strange file names (strings of characters). When I click on the icon on my desktop, it opens, that icon disappears, and a new icon appears with the proper file name.
    I've run ClamXav a couple of times and found nothing, but I have just run it thru my documents and my Applications folder.
    Any tips? I'm really worried about my data. I know I'm running a dinosaur of an OS, but I hope someone will know what's going on regardless.

    Firefox was on the Desktop.
    I now have NO aliases in the Applications folder. I only had Firefox ones, and I've deleted them.
    I have a 15" silver PowerBook G4 with a 1.5 GHz PowerPC G4 processor, 1.25 GB DDR SDRAM. Of the RAM, only 256 MB (in the lower slot) is original; 1 GB is installed by me, but I installed it well over a year ago, so I don't think that can be the issue. The Hard Drive is 74.5 GB, with 6.4 GB available. (It might be worth mentioning, though it's embarrassing, that I pushed the HD to having only about 500 MB of available memory about a month ago, and then deleted and compressed a whole bunch of stuff - particularly music - in order to have a functioning computer.) I am running Panther 10.3.9. I have no peripherals connected right now, though I sometimes connect a Lacie external hard drive; this hasn't been connected when experiencing problems.
    I can't think of anything special that's happened betw when the PowerBook functioned successfully and when it hasn't. It might be worth mentioning that on two occasions, in the past 6 months, the computer has refused to start up at all, with the HD making that sickening pathetic rotating noise that all computer owners dread. However, I checked the disc and it has reported that the HD is fine. Obviously I'm running on borrowed time, but I'd like the computer to stay functional for a few more months.
    No system upgrades. I've installed a few programs, notably the new Firefox and Quicksilver.
    The Mac's shut down overnight, usually, though these days I'm afraid to shut it down and mostly let it sleep. I haven't run routine maintenance procedures (apparently I'm a bad computer owner, though I didn't realize it), but on the advice given above I ran the maintenance scripts just yesterday. Turns out the monthly one hadn't run since 2005. But I've done it manually now....
    Ahh, the mystery of this Mac. I'll hopefully locate a copy of the system disc tomorrow and can then do whatever that will allow me to.

  • Upon restarting my computer (which runs OSX 10.6.8), one of my 23 inch Cinema Displays is flickering like crazy.   Please help!!!

    I use two 23" apple cinemas displays with my MacPro.  Several times in the past, when I've restarted the computer one of the monitor is flickering as soon as it powers up.  One of those times I shut the computer down again right away and restarted and the problem went away.  Another time it stopped after sitting for a while.  But it has just happened again....and this time, no matter how often I restart, or how long I've let it sit, the monitor continues to flicker.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.

    then im using this statement
    SELECT productID,COUNT(*) AS cat_num FROM shopbasket_table GROUP BY productID ORDER BY cat_num DESC LIMIT 0,10
    which sorts them like
    productID
    4
    2
    3
    but this doesnt take in to account the quantity in the basket which it really should
    as product 3 has 6 in the basket
    so it should be
    3
    4
    2
    anyone know enough about sql to know what im missing from my statement?

    My friend bought a new Ipad on a store ( not in Apple store because she lives in a small state where there is not any Apple store. I didnt remember the name of her state clearly). The problem is when I check the Serial number in the Apple site, I find out the estimated expiry date is August 9 (still didnt open the seal yet), after that when i first time active the Ipad, the day on the site had changed by the day I active (Sep 27) and the information of August 9 is disappear. Please dont mind make me clear this point. If I said that August 9 was the first day I active is wrong or right? Or it is just the day my friend paid for the Ipad at store??? I think that when I didnt active the ipad, we cant find any information on site.
    The second is: I find out in this Ipad there has been a sim card already inside, and the owner of this store answered surely that ALL the Ipad of Apple store has a sim attached inside.
    I just want to know my product I bought from my friend is brand new or second hand.

    The date Apple cares about is the date the authorized reseller sold the iPad, not the day you first set up the iPad or registered it with Apple. So I can't explain why it started as showing 8/9 and then changed to 9/27. But since it says Sep 27 2013 as the date of warranty expiration, why worry about it? If you're concerned about Apple catching the mistake and changing it back at some inconvenient time, call Apple support, ask to speak with someone in AppleCare Plan Administration, and discuss the problem with them. They'd want to see a copy of the invoice, though, which you'd have to get from your friend if she didn't already send you a copy.

    I have a bug, when I type an incorrect URL into SAFARI or FIRE FOX, I get a link to some (changing) sex portal, i.e. it comes instead of the 'page not found' page.
    Any ideas, I have tried clearing out the cache, and removing the pref, but I think this may be a virus.

    Thats it....
    I followed the advice on the macworld site, and found a cure.
    I typed "sudo crontab -r" in Terminal and added again the DNS server addresses in network settings which were grayed out. After reboot the grayed DNS's had gone and I deleted the ones I put in.
    Seems to have worked for now.
