Fees with using AIM, SKYPE etc

Please help me understand the fees for using AIM etc on the phone. I just got a bill, after two years and had extra charges for texting for the first time. In researching the issue, since push and sms was added AND turned ON for AIM, everytime someone chatted me from computer to computer it was going to my Iphone also and being charged as sms text. So, I have since gone into preferences, turned off push and sms notification for AIM (the app). Will I still NOT be able to send or receive a chat using AIM over my phone w/o being charged for it? Does this apply to using SKYPE etc? I don't feel like I was being charged for using AIM previous to the upgrade. I bought the brand new Iphone 3g and stopped using the original one that I NEVER paid for all those texts. I am just confused about the fees and would like someone to explain it to me in plain language....

Hi all - I'm SO confused and annoyed by this exact issue that Valerie brought up. I just received my first bill since getting the new iPhone and am shocked at the amount of sms charges.
Re: AIM, how can you keep Push Notifications ON, but SMS off? I tried that, but I wasn't notified when I received an IM. I needed to be logged into the AIM app. Isn't there a way to get the little red number to appear on the icon, but to NOT receive an SMS?
I have such hatred towards AT&T at this point...

Strange noise using ichat, skype, etc.

Hello,
I am writing because when I use an application like ichat or skype to speak with someone (no matter who) on my macbook, I get a strange chirping / whistling / pulsing /hissing noise in the audio. The receiver hears it as well. When I put on headphones, I no longer hear the noise and neither does the other party.
I just got this macbook this week...is it a hardware issue that I have to have fixed?

I have the same problem when I talk to my father from my macbook to his macbook using iChat. With Skype the problem goes away but the screen quality isn't close to the iChat quality.
Strangely I don't get the same problem when I speak to him using my iMac or using his iMac or with my brother's Powerbook. It's only when we use dad's new Macbook. The guys at the apple store said we should turn down the volume to reduce the feedback but it's also serves to make the conversation impossible.
What I don't understand is why it's only the one machine that causes this and why it works fine with Skype. Unfortately there doesn't seem to be a fix for this or the store isn't acknowledging the problem as it's very annoying and renders iChat unusable.

Use AIM with iChat

I don't have an .Mac acount, so I use MSNforMac to talk with an Hotmail account to my PC friends.
I want to use iChat because MSNforMac don't let us make videoconferences.
But can I talk to my friends (that use MSN in a PC) by iChat with an AIM Acount?
So I tried to create an AIM acount
But now, when I write the screen name and the password of my AIM acount in iChat, appears an message saying that iChat couldn't connect to AOL service.

Yes the Jabber side of iChat can be made with the aid of "Transports" to connect to other services such as MSN.
However this does not include Video or Audio with the current Codecs used.
Your options are aMSN or Mercury Messenger for Video to MSN Buddies or as has been said move to Skype.

Screen sharing option no longer works after updating to iOS Maverik. I am using AIM and so is the other person who i am trying to share my screen with. .

I am using AIM and so is the other person who i am trying to share my screen with. I log into AIM with an @aol.com account. I can request to share my screen and share the other person's screen. The window will pop up on the other computer, but after clicking accept it will go back to saying that there is a request for screen share. What should I do to fix this?

To be clear, iOS = iPhone and iPad and some iPod Touches and the Operating System they use.
Mac OS X = the Operating System Mac computers use.
Regarding the AOL account, is this actually from AOL and have the Chat/Messaging option enabled ?
Or is it a Name registered with the AIM part of AIM ?
You can have AOL as your ISP and have an email and User ID from them.
This needs to have the ability to use the name as a Chat name enabled (or at least it used to)
AIM, which actually stands for AOL Instant Messaging has it's own registration site.
Nowadays you register for a AIM email (although activating it for mail is another additional step).
It used to be that the bit before the @aim.com bit was the user name you used in Chat applications that could use AIM.
Previous to the current system you could in fact register just a Screen Name with them.
Apple (and a few US based ISPs) also have agreements with AIM that their (Apple, etc.) emails are recognised as Valid AIM Screen Names.
This means those issued by Apple ending in @mac.com, @me.com issued from the iCloud registration and @icloud.com.
(You do have to keep your password to 16 characters or less.)
From what you are saying you seem to be sure that you can see each other as On Line in your respective AIM Buddy lists ?
In Messages in both Mountain Lion and Mavericks you do not have to display the Buddy lists
(See the Window Menu plus the General Section of the Preferences to separate them)
Are you also saying that in the Video menu the option to allow Screen Shares is Enabled ?
Is it done at both ends ?
In iChat you could offer to Share your Screen with a Buddy without the option being On (they could not ask to share yours or offer theirs). I have not tested this in Messages.

The template is a document in itself, it is not applied to an existing document whether it is a Pages document or a Word document converted to a Pages document.
You would need to either copy and paste content, using existing styles, or apply the styles to the converted Word document.
You can Import the Styles from an existing document and those imported Styles can be used to override the current document's styles:
Menu > Format > Import Styles
The process is simplified if the styles use the same names, otherwise you will need to delete the style you don't want and replace it with the one that you do want when asked, then the substitution is pretty straightforward.

If you both have seperate iTunes Store accounts then basically, yes, it is going "screw up" your wife's account.
iTunes Match is designed as a single-user service which is associated with one and only one iTunes Store account ID. If you have subscribed on your account and want to activate the service on another computer that is already signed in with an account the present account must be signed out and then iTunes signed into your account. This means the other computer will have complete access to your account and will only be able to make purchases on your account. iTM is not designed to be signed in and out at will. If she has apps purchased with her iTunes Store account they will not be able to be updated.

Depending on exactly what you want to do, there are a couple of ways of handling this. You may want to access teh user guide for some ideas: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/ipad_user_guide.pdf

Im trying to use AIM through Ichat and it doesn't seem to be working? can i just install AIM and use it with the Ichat, because that isnt working either...i tried installing aim and when I double click it I get an error msg or it tries to open in Excel??

You don't need the AIM software to use iChat, just sign up for a free screen name.

IChat video conference with PC using AIM

I have successfully connected with my brothers PC and we can see and hear each other using ichat on my side and AIM on his PC. Unfortunately, he only has a one inch by one inch screen the displays the vidio image while I'm enjoyng a full screen using ichat.
Is there anything a PC user can do to increse the size of their video viewing window when using AIM?

Using iChat AV and trying to video conference with a PC using AIM

I am trying to create an AV session from my mac to a PC. I am using iChat with an AIM username and the PC is using AIM. Everytime i try to establish a video connection it says that I did not respond. What can I do to fix this?

He is on XP ?
He is using AIM 5.9 ?
He has Tuned the camera and Mic to the App ?
If he is at Service Pack 2 he has enabled the app through the XP firewall ?
You have the MAc firewall Off.
The ports are enabled in your modem.
Either using UPnP or these actual ports
5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403 for just the AIM stuff.
Have you changed the Quicktime setting to match your download speed ?
Can you and he get any of the people or test accounts o this page ?

How to ichat using bonjour with no AIM account

how do you get ichat to work with bonjour when one user has NO AIM account. This is on a local network in the workplace. Is it even possible? I think it is because I used to work at an Applestore and any computer could chat with any other computer, and I know they weren't using AIM names.

I have a window with the title "AIM buddy list"
Both my Bonjour window AND my AIM window mirror my "away" setting. when one says away, the other says away. OK.
But in prefs, there is a setting when the Bonjour account is selected that says, "When iChat opens, automatically log in". Do you have to "log in" to Bonjour. AIM is automatic.
that is now checked in Bonjour. Does sharing or anything else need to be turned on.
There is also a check box to "publish my email and IM address".
In my AIM account, I have to add people to my buddy list. How do you add someone to your Bonjour list.

Can't Use Video with other Mac users who use AIM

I know that ichat is compatible for video chats with other pc users who use aim, but does it work with other mac users who use aim?
Everytime I try to chat with my friend, I get an error message when trying to start of a video chat.
BTW, I use a iMac G5 with an isight camera.

For a Bit of Clarity.
AOL have their Instant Message App. referred to as AIM.
Apple decided and did a deal with AOL that iChat could join their service Buddy Lists.
On these Discussions we tend to refer iChat as Logging into AIM, as they are the servers that the Buddy Lists are held on.
As iChat can also use Bonjour and Jabber, both of which have their own Buddy list window on your Mac. The Jabber side needs you to have a Jabber screen name - so again people differentiate between this and the AIM side.
I would guess you friend is trying to make it clear that she is using the AIM side of iChat as opposed to the Jabber side.
As has been said already, the Application side of things also tend to get referred to generically as "AIM" as well.
The Mac version has stopped and 4.7 and will only Text chat.
The PC side needs 5.9 to clearly Video or Audio chat with a Mac using iChat. (AIM 6.0 is not stable enough to A/V chat to iChat).

IChat using AIM account suddenly won't work with MAC accounts

Hello,
Our company is all Mac and uses ichat on a daily basis for employees to communicate around the world. I have a user in Canada who is experiencing a perplexing problem.
Until recently, her iChat text ability worked just fine, whether it was to another user with an AIM or Mac ID. She is using an AIM ID. However, there are now 2 users that have Mac ID's that she is unable to receive or send text messages from. If they send her a message, it shows she has an incoming message but she cannot open it. Nor can she send them a message. She can however, video chat with them. I thought at first it had something to do with her having an AIM account and them having Mac accounts, but she is still able to send and receive messages from all other users with Mac accounts.
I have gone through all her settings that I can think of; nothing is blocked. I asked her if she noticed the problem after an update or something like that. She thinks she was prompted to do a software update shortly before the problem started, but she's not 100%. She's on a MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.8 and iChat 4.0.2 (604).
Any insight into fixing this would be greatly appreciated!
