Fetch Softworks iWeb 1.1

Does anyone have any experience using this product to publish to a folder and than FTP over to a hosting service. The host tells me they do not have the extensions loaded to support an upload directly from iweb??? But that I can FTP my site which will be listed as a sub-domain to them. Since I have have multi sites on in iWeb and iWeb for whatever reason doesn't allow you to selectively publish site and publishes all sites. I'm look at the options to be able to publish to specific site from iWeb to a folder and than up to the host... As automagical as possible. I'm wondering what kind of experience anyone has had with fetch..... the first hit from google bar in safari after typing FTP software for MAC
Thx...
BTW my software update just ping me and wants me to amoung other's update iweb to 1.1... I'm thinking I'll pass for now...

Just publish everything to your local drive and use Fetch or any other ftp program to upload the stuff to the server. Many people have done this without problem. Here are some tips:

  • Publishing iWeb sites...

I'm looking into setting up a simple site for my photography, but I would prefer it to be more independent than sites like flickr allow for. If I use iWeb to create the site, do I need MobileMe to successfully get it online? Or can it be done through any web host?
    Many thanks!!

You can do it with any web host that supports Linux hosting (preferred). I have the basic subscription from GoDaddy and it works very well. I use Fetch to upload my content to GoDaddy... and for providing me with email I use Google apps... so my [email protected] is indeed powered by gmail...
From a previous post when another user asked similar question, but related to hosting her site with godaddy, see below:
make sure you buy LINUX hosting rather than windows hosting, if you choose windows you can email support and they will explain you how to move your account to Linux.
Once you have done that, download FETCH as that works great with iWeb. this is a good link with the info on using Fetch with iWeb: http://fetchsoftworks.com/FetchWebHelp/Contents/Tutorial/TutorialUploadingWeb.ht ml
Then to upload things into godaddy is pretty straightforward: see here: http://help.godaddy.com/topic/80/article/103
Finally there are some minor things you should consider, read this: http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/iwebserver.html
I had zero knowledge on web site design and hosting and I bookmarked those 3 links and learned everything I needed to learn. I hope this info is useful.

  • Erased hard drive - lost iWeb design

I designed a web site using iWeb and published it through my own web host (not .mac). I upload it using Fetch. Last week, I had to reinstall my system software and lost all my stuff, including my iWeb files. I've reinstalled Fetch and iWeb and I've downloaded the site back onto my computer. Is there a way for me to now import the site back into iWeb so that I can update it?

    iWeb can't open HTML files.
You need the Domain.sites file created by iWeb but you wrote over that file with your re-install.
If you have any back ups of that file you can bring it back into your Home folder and iWeb will recognize it.

  • What does Safari/Mac do for FTP these days?

i am trying to bookmark an ftp download site for my website that is of the form:
    ftp://[email protected]//[email protected]
i know this is a mouthful but it is the correct url and when i enter it into Safari it kicks it out into Firefox which I also have loaded but try to never use. Does anyone know if there are settings in Safari that control this or what is happening here?
is ftp controls set in safari, firefox or elsewhere?
is there a better way to handle ftp on the mac?
all my searches show very old threads on this topic.
    TIA

The URI doesn't seem righ to me. It should be of the form
    <ftp://user:password@host:port/path>
    (see <http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/ftpurl.html>)
Does anyone know if there are settings in Safari
The settings are not in Safari.
The default FTP client is set in com.apple.LaunchServices.plist. This command in Terminal
    $ defaults read com.apple.LaunchServices | grep -A 2 ftp
should give you a reading of the current settings. It sounds as if you set Firefox to be the default FTP client; if so, there should be a preference for it in Firefox. If not, you should be able to change it in the preferences of the app you decide to use as FTP client, or using the prefpane RCDefaultApp (make sure to read the docs first before installing it).
is there a better way to handle ftp on the mac?
Finder is the default FTP client. Do ⌘K, or Go > Connect to Server…, put the correct URI in "Server Address", and you're good to go. However, it's download only.
For full FTP (we'll ignore CLI tools), I've been using for many years Fetch by Fetch Softworks (commercial, but free for educational or charitable purposes). Alternatives are Interarchy (commercial), Transmit by Panic (commercial), CyberDuck (free), FileZilla (free), Fugu (free, but SFTP only), and others.

  • Need to send file to a server... help/

Hello, I need to upload a piece of music to a server in Germany. I've cut and pasted the link (ftp.... etc) and it's loaded up into the side of my finder window.
I can see other files in there but whenever i try and drag and drop my file in it say's that 'the item "File name" cannpt be moved because "server address" cannont be modified.
Thing is, my friend uses the same server on his PC and doesn't have the same message. He's able to just upload his files straight away.
Next to the password i've been given there's a thing that say's 'port 21'. Not sure if that has anything to do with it... please help. it's quite urgent

Sounds like a firewall issue. Check out these articles:
Mac OS X 10.2 or Later: Cannot Copy to FTP Servers in the Finder
You can use the Connect To Server command to connect to an FTP server in the Finder, but you will have read-only access. You cannot copy, or upload, to an FTP volume in the Finder.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server volumes available in the Finder have read-only access, even when the FTP server is set to allow you write access.
If you want to copy files from a Mac OS X computer to an FTP server, you need to use an application other than the Finder.
You can use the Terminal utility or a third-party FTP utility such as:
    * Interarchy, by Stairways Software (http://interarchy.com/)
    * Fetch, by Fetch Softworks (http://fetchsoftworks.com/)
    * Transmit, by Panic, Inc. (http://www.panic.com/transmit/)

  • Do I need to upload entire site after every change?

Publishing to a folder, then uploading with Fetch. If I make a change in on one page (and my site has 11 pages), do I need to upload the entire site every-time? I make changes and additions all the time.
    iWeb 1.1.1.
Sorry if this topic has been discussed before. Thanks, Marcos

Marcos ~ Click below to read an article "Using Fetch with iWeb":
    ...it says:
"When you re-publish your website after making changes, iWeb re-creates every file, even if you just made one change on one page. As a result, if you are using Fetch's Mirror command to upload your website, every file will appear to be newer than the ones on the server, and all files will be uploaded again. This is a limitation of iWeb, and there is no way to work around it currently."
In September 2007 I asked the guys at Transmit about this and they replied:
"Transmit is in the same boat as Fetch. There is currently no workaround for this, as Transmit 3 was only designed to consider dates when synchronizing, not size. Transmit 4 will be able to compare sizes."
(The current version of Transmit is 3.6.5)
RBrowser has +Folder Syncronization+; click here:
"RBrowser's sync engine will automatically find your changes and publish your new and changed files only to the remote server."
...But perhaps you would have to buy the licensed version to get that feature:
"Absolutely unrestricted operations in all protocols (Local, FTP/SSL/TLS, SFTP-SSH), *including Folder Sync*."
...you could try the free version first and see if it has that feature.
Here's a comprehensive list of Mac file transfer software:
    http://www.macorchard.com/filetransfer/
By the way, when publishing to .Mac, only the changed pages are uploaded.

  • My iweb website i posted through Fetch isn't working...

i posted my iweb website using Fetch to my godaddy.com web address, but it's not working. it keeps coming up with the "this page coming soon" page instead. is there a certain folder i'm supposed to post it to? do i need to delete the "this page coming soon" file from the ftp server? i can't figure out what i did wrong.
can anyone help me? my website is www.dianne-spence.com, by the way.
    thanks!

I think you uploaded the wrong index.html file. You are saving your sitefolder into the Sites folder on your hard drive, which is not wrong but it is confusing you tremendously.
Here is exactly what I want you to do...
    1. On your desktop make a new folder...call it "iWeb FTP stuff"
    2. Open up iWeb and select "Publish to Folder".
    3. In the field for URL, type in "http://www.dianne-spence.com"
    4. Up above in the file window, select the folder on your desktop "iWeb FTP stuff" to save your site into.
    5. Click on Go. iWeb will now publish your site to the "iWeb FTP stuff" folder on your desktop. Quit iWeb when it is finished.
    6. Now open up the "iWeb FTP stuff" folder on your desktop just to explore... see how there are only two things inside there? An index.html file and then another folder named after your site, right? Perfect. These are the two items to upload to your server. Don't bother with the sitefolder.
    7. Now launch Fetch and enter in your GoDaddy account info. Navigate to the "iWeb FTP stuff" folder and select the index.html file and the sitefolder (named after your site). Start the upload.
That should do it. Let me know what happens.

  • Iweb/fetch/godaddy hosting-not loading

Need help. I designed my website on iweb and bought hosting thru godaddy, used fetch for FTP--tried to load the site and it wouldn't appear when I went to my site. I asked godaddy support for help. Here's how they answered:
Currently your index.html page is loading, but the code on this page is redirecting to remakeyourplace.com/REMAKE YOUR PLACE.html. You will need to add this page, or change the coding on your site. Unfortunately, we do not provide technical support with third-party scripting issues. You may wish to consult with a community forum online or do a search on your favorite search engine as other users may have encountered a similar problem in the past and may offer helpful solutions. We thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Can someone tell me in simple terms how to solve this problem? Obviously I have no idea what I'm doing, I just want to get my website up and running.I could really use the help. thx

"put" (the term fetch uses for loading) the entire folder to my website
That does not sound correct. The instructions tell you to upload two items: the folder which has the same name as you gave your site inside the iweb app, plus the index.html file which iWeb creates alongside that folder. The folder also has an index.html inside it, and that is fine, but in your server space you must be able to see two separate items, one file called index.html and one folder with the name you gave your site.
To avoid possible confusion, try publishing to your desktop, so you can clearly see the index.html file and folder which iWeb creates and which both need to be uploaded.

  • Video-iweb-fetch-godaddy. Videos on site play on PC, not on Mac. Ideas?????

I have created a website with video in Iweb. I used Fetch to upload it to godaddy. The site, including videos work flawlessly when viewing from a PC. When viewing from a Mac, the entire site works however the videos will not play. You can see the video window and what appears to be the progress bar indicating that the video is loading. When you hit the play button...nothing. In fact the entire player interface fails to function. I am not able to operate the sound button, the menu button, etc.
    Does anyone have any ideas.

    UPDATE
OK I have discovered that it is purely the interface with the player. I was able to get the videos to play & pause on my Mac by double clicking right on the player screen. Once playing, I was also able to use right and left (home & end) buttons to frame by frame.
I am going to need to get this interface working though.
    Any insight from anyone?

  • Using iWeb to create a site uploaded to another domain via Fetch or the lik

I'm sorry for the like subject line, but I don't know what to call what I'm looking for.
I create my website in iWeb, publish to a folder, put it up on my personal domain using Fetch. (www.cynfrank.com) My domain is hosted by a company called Vario.
My question is how do I add things like a feed from my LibraryThing account that features books from my library on my site? It gives me an HTML code, but I don't know where to put it in iWeb so it works. When I got this same type of code for a video I was posting in a blog entry, I simply dragged and dropped it on my iWeb page, published, put and it worked. It was like magic. Maybe I'll try it.
Also, how do I put iTunes playlists on my site? Drag and Drop as well?
    CindyLoo

Thanks for the quick reply. However, after I posted, I was playing around in iWed and stumbled onto the Widget and suddenly, like magic, it dawned on me what it does.
As for the iTunes playlist....just drag and drop. It's like magic! But then isn't that the standard us MacUser have come to expect from our computers?
    Thanks again.

  • Using iWeb ftp trouble but not with Fetch

I have a site I created with iWeb and I cannot get it to publish to the ftp server (3essentials). I currently publish the site to a local folder, then upload the site folder using fetch. I would like to do it all through iWeb. But I keep getting an error? Any ideas on why it work for fetch and not iWeb?
    thanks for any ideas.

Thanks for the tip. I tried it, and I had more success but not complete ...it now goes along farther without quitting, but says my password is incorrect. Which doesn't make sense because it is the same password that works for Fetch.
    any ideas?
    thanks,

  • Iweb,fetch,existing web site

Hi and thanks in advance! I currently have a web site dianabeads.com, which I edit and update through parallel desk top and windows xp and front page. I am trying to figure out how to do it with iweb and fetch so I can get windows off of my mac, I have played with setting up a page in iweb, so easy have opened fetch and viewed my current web site, but when I go to "put" on fetch i cant find where the file (new page) is that I want to transfer. I can be reached at [email protected] thanks again. Tom Bunten

The main reason for not publishing direct from iWeb would be that a lot of people want to optimize and/or add tags.
The three applications that I use for this - WSM, WebCrusher and iWeb SEO tool will all upload to an iDisk with one click to save you the extra steps for drag and drop.
However, if you want to optimize and retain the iWeb features like hit counter, comments etc, you have to publish to MobileMe first anyway. If this is the case, I would agree that there is every good reason for publish direct from iWeb.
If you follow this thread ...

.... you will see how Old Toad's brilliant and perceptive mind has opened the door to successfully achieving the seemingly impossible task of optimizing and retaining these features.

  • Getting fetch files back in to iweb

  • IWeb, Fetch and Yahoo Web hosting

When I create an iWeb site and publish it to a folder, then use FETCH to upload to my yahoo website, there is a double referencing of the domain name that causes a 404 error when I try to visit the site. Any solutions?

There's no such thing as "way to go".
iWeb creates a folder with the sitename and an index.html file outside it.
Put these on the server. Or put the contents on the server and do not click the visit button or announce the site.
And if you have an RSS feed of a photoalbum subscription, then you will get the error because iWeb uses the sitename.
Follow the links for the solution I gave earlier.
You can put any number of folders on the server. There is no 'must'.

  • IWeb pages do not show up on pc and i am getting diamonds with "?" on pages

I am new to iWeb - so, these are my two issues
    1) on my posted site http://www.monroe68.com - when you go to my portfolio page, 7 images/buttons should appear - on a mac, they do - on a PC, they do not - does anyone know why?
    2) on my pages, black triangles w "?"s appear at top and bottom - does anyone know why?
    Thanks,
    Rik

Normally the ftp programs would be automatically set to UTF-8.
If that were always true, the question-mark problem would never arise here, but it still does. One reason is that there are people who still use Fetch 4, which is set to ISO-8859-1 unless you uncheck the box "Translate ISO Characters" as explained in my note.
