Few observations after installing SL

Hello all,
I have upgraded to SL yesterday night and want to share my experiences so far. I have read a lot about all the 32, 64 bit confusion and other problems related with SL. As of now, my installation was successful and I see no problems at all. I am still confused with the 32, 64 bit boot and don't wanna mess around yet. Anyways, here are my observations.
1. System profiler -> Software -> 64 bit kernel and extensions : No
2. Set Safari to open in 32 bit, to run Safari adblock plus
3. Before installing SL, HD free space was 77.5GB, now it is 88.55 GB!! I was surprised at the amount of space that was freed up. That was amazing
4. Just started using my macbook on battery. It shows 82% left and only 1.48hrs remaining??? I am kinda surprised... will my battery drain so fast on SL?
5. ClamXav application is not working. I guess I need to install a beta version of it. Has anyone tried the beta version yet?
6. Could someone let me know how to check if my fan is working properly. I have seen so many posts regarding fan issues and don't know how to check it.
7. The applications I have other than pre-installed are Open office, Adobe, ClamXav and few others. As mentioned, all these are working fine as of now, except clamxav.
The purpose of this post is to ensure that all the necessary applications and other misc details are working properly. Please let me know if I have checked everything or if there are other areas to be checked as well. Just wanna be sure my SL works fine

This is changeable, just hold down the "6" and "4" keys at bootup to make that boot session 64-bit. You can also edit a plist file to make the system always boot in 64-bit: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20090828112540695

Yeah, some extensions and such will require 32-bit mode for applications.

You may need to re-calibrate your battery after installing OS X. I noticed that my battery life seems to have dropped an hour or so as well, but perhaps it's just more accurate. It's still within the range of what they've advertised.

They just came out with an update to ClamXAV that is supposed to work with Snow Leopard: http://www.clamxav.com/

Fans are controlled by the System Management Controller. Do a google search for how to reset the SMC for your machine, and that should clear up fan problems.

My iBook keeps restarting every few hours after installing ZD WLan Utility

i recently instaled the ZD WLan wireless utility because i got a Belkin f5d7050 usb wireless adapter, now every few hours mac needs to reboot. after it reboots though it gives me the message that it had to shut down unexpectedly (because it told me to hold the power button) i thought i could find out whats wrong by clicking on the Report button and going through the report log, but it never opens. What do i do? this is really frustrating and interrupts my work.

MacBook Pro 13 " going slower in performance after Installing LION OSX

Hey Guys ,
I had noticed some problems in my MacBook Pro 13" which I bought in the MID of 2011 ( i5 processor ) , I had purchased and installed LION OSX and observed after installing that my Backlite ( Keyboard ) dont get on when I start up at the LOG IN , which used to work in SNOW LEOPARD .
Booting takes SO SO SO long as when comapared with the previous OS .
Heating Problem is also a must to mention .
If you guys know how to reduce these problems please help me out !

I'm curious if you ever found a solution for this issue. I recently purchased the SanDisk Extreme II 480GB, replacing my OWC Extreme Pro 240GB. The OWC never experienced the "slow to wake" issue whereas the SanDisk drive does, consistently. To make sure I'm having the same symptoms, this is what happens to me: Put the mac to sleep (either manually or letting it do it on its own, waiting for the led to pulse showing that it is asleep), then wake it up (press a key on the keyboard), the logon screen shows almost immediately but as soon as I try to type the pinwheel/beach ball shows up, I wait between 20 and 30 seconds and then I'm able to type and all is well.
I contataced SanDisk and their support was horrible. They simply told me "contact MAC for this issue" (no joke, not "contact Apple" but "contact MAC", in all caps). I explained that it works fine with the OWC drive just not the SanDisk. They replied with another article showing that all macs have trouble waking from sleep (not true). I replied again indicating that I've never had this issue with any of my 3rd party drives, only this SanDisk. Then the replied simply stating that all mac's have issues with 3rd party hard drives when waking from sleep. At this point I threw a fit and yelled at my screen, even though it wasn't my screens fault.
In any case, their support has not been willing to do any actual troubleshooting. I'd love to return it and I might have to - but as you stated, it's annoying to have this issue but the performance is fine the rest of the time.

TS3824 My iMac won't wake from sleep after installing the most recent OS update.

I'm having trouble with my iMac, the screen won't wake up after it goes to sleep. The one time it did the screen was all fuzzy and pink. This has only happened in the last few hours after installing the latest OS X Lion update. Is this normal? Can someone help?

Hello, not normal.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/LaunchDaemons
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Permissions.
Re-install if that doesn't work.

Unfortunately I tried that and it didn't work. Thanks for the help though. I tried to uninstall and it said I couldn't because the file is corrupt or something, but I think I finally got it uninstalled and/or deleted or whatever, but now I try to reinstall/download it again from the beginning and I can't. No matter what I do I can not get Firefox working again. No matter how many times I try to redownload it. Any other suggestions?

The problem Apps may need to be updated. Or maybe your iTunes account needs to just update itself on your iPhone. To do this, install a free App from the App Store on your iPhone. Tap App Store app on iPhone, select and install a free App. When that is done try the problem Apps to see if they work OK again.

Just installed windows 7 Ultimate using Boot Camp. Problem is when I choose to boot the windows partition, I get the windows icon on the screen showing that it is starting, but few second after, I get a blank screen. I suspect a driver (screen) issue, since I also installed Parallell using the boot camp partition and that works fine.
Do anybody out there has an ideal of what to do to solve this issue.

Are you a developer? If so, post this question in the developer forum. If not, why are you using a beta version of ios 7? You need to restore your device as NEW in itunes and update the current software version.

i have been following this message board each day for the past week - ever since my iTunes stopped working. i have not yet seen anyone who is receiving the same error message as myself.
like most others, i downloaded the recent update for iTunes - since then, iTunes will not open. i have tried most of the other proposed solutions to no avail, such as downloading a stand-alone version of quicktime, making sure my msconfig start-up has the correct check marks, etc.
the iTunes set-up completes with no problem - i have tried installing by saving the file to my hard drive and then running and also by running the program straight from the download window. same results.
once i go to open iTunes, i receive the following error message: "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. if you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about this problem." Then I click "Send Error Report" just hoping I will receive a required update to make this work.
i was wondering if you could attempt to help me resolve this issue? i have my music saved to my external hard drive, so i am in no danger of losing my music. however, i need to open iTunes to update my iPod.

I updated my iTunes to the most recent version and restarted my computer. When my computer turned back on, I tried to open iTunes but it just keeps giving me the "The application iTunes quit unexpectedly" message and asks me to either ignore report or relaunch. Every time I click relaunch, the message comes up again. My OS is Mac OSX Version 10.5.8. Anyone know what to do?

Windows 8.1 Pro will not boot after installing iTunes 11.1.5.5

It's a little hard for me to accept that this is true, but the symptoms seem to be pointing the direction of the title of this thread. I have an all-in-one touch-screen Gateway computer that came with windows 7 (yeah, a win7 machine that came with touch, yeesh) and I put windows 8.1 pro 64-bit on it with a clean install (actually windows 8 was the clean install and then I did the free microsoft store upgrade to 8.1). It has 4GB of RAM and has a Pentium Dual Core cpu @ 2.2 Ghz. It was running fine with the previous version of iTunes, but as soon as I updated to iTunes 11.1.5.5 (and there may have been other apple things that updated too (ie quicktime of course), the computer prompted me for a reboot and froze during the reboot process (before it even shut down). Then it had trouble booting into windows. I ran startup repair to no avail and decided to do a sytem restore. My most recent restore point was from a few weeks back, before iTunes was even installed at all on the machine. I went back to that point and the machine worked fine again. Then I installed iTunes 11.1.5.5 and the same exact problem occurred - it froze while shutting down after the iTunes install and then would not boot into windows 8. I did another system restore and have not put iTunes back on. The system is working fine. I'm going to try to find out if there's a way to download older versions of iTunes, so that I can install it, but the bigger issue here is: Is this a legitimate bug/incompatibility with some hardware or software or driver that I have on this computer? I run a computer support business so I know my way around but I don't have time to troubleshoot this from scratch. Anyone else seeing this? Apple employees...a little help here? Any input?

That may not have been long enough. But a "hard shutdown" would definitely have been construed as a problem due to the update.
