Few questions about my new mac book? im new to mac

#1.  Im new to mac so i dont know a whole lot about them but today while browsing the web i got a window that opened that said "browse your mac with Mackeeper to clean it and make sure its safe and to optimize your performance"  I didnt click on anything but it wouldnt let me exit out i had to force quit my Safari to get it to go away.  What is this?
#2.  What do i need to do to keep my mac from getting slow and getting viruses? the most i really do on it is typing work, checking email, watching you tube, social networking on facebook, and browsing forums (forums like this where i can ask questions or share my experiences on certain things)  if im not doing any of that im on websites like bestbuy or Cabelas or Bass pro shops doing online shopping.  Every so often i have to do online research but not often.  do i have much to worry about?
#3.  Im on my computer everyday what is better for it? Leaving it turned on 24/7 since i mainly use it at home plugged into the wall turning it on in the morning or whenever i get on and shutting it down before bed? or turning it on and off throughout the day as i get on and off?
#4.  When the computer is plugged in the battery says it only has a 96% charge.. its brandnew shouldnt it be at 100%? even though so far i havent really used the battery?

1. The popup you received should be ignored, you were wise to ignore it. It is well publicized in other forums. I'd recommend looking over:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3029144?tstart=0 for a more thorough explanation.
2. There are zero, none, nada, zip Virus's for Macs so the best thing you can do is simply enjoy it. There is no maintenance that is necessary either, everything you were used to doing with a PC is now in your past! OS X is designed to do daily, weekly and monthly maintenance on it's own in the background usually in the middle of the night. Nothing other than that needs to be done. You can download and install Maintidget at:
http://www.giantmike.com/widgets/Maintidget.html this will show you when these scripts were last run.
3. As for what is best for your computer I'd recommend reading the owners manual that came with it. Because you have a portable it has a battery that needs to be maintained. Please read the following articles on the care of your battery, it needs to be exercised. Leaving it plugged in 24/7 shortens it's life so please read the articles especially the article on calibration.
Batteries , Battery Calibration , Battery Maintenance and Troubleshooting.
4. Also because you are new to Mac's I'd recommend bookmarking and reading the following sites, they're specifically for folks like yourself that are considering or have changed from MS Windows.

  • A few questions about reformatting my mac

    Alright, I have had my Mac for about a year now and have filled up every nook and cranny of its hard drive and it has begun to kind of lag a lot. I want to backup a lot of things and then reformat the hardrive. I have a few questions before I go about doing this:
    How do I reformat my drive?
    How do I reinstall tiger, when I bought my mac it came with 10.3 but then tiger came out the day after and I got it for 9.99 and had to install it after I started using my mac, I think its an upgrade version, does that matter? Do I install 10.3 and upgrade it again to tiger?
    Am I stupid for doing this?
    Another question, a little off topic....
    I backup my iTunes library on an external hardrive a lot, but its a manual backup, I dont use an application that compresses it to one file, I just copy the iTunes library folder to another drive. Everytime I delete an artist from my library, I delete it permanently, knowing that I still have them saved on the external drive. So if I deleted a folder called AC/DC from my regular itunes folder, when I copy my iTunes folder to the backup, it asks me if I want to replace the folder called iTunes, Will it delete the folder called ac/dc already in the backup, since it isnt in the folder I am copying over.
    -Thanks

    Hi boarderjosh,
    first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
    Reformat: Boot from the 10.3 install CD 1 by holding down the c-key during boot. Once the installer app has started select "disk utility" from the menu and reformat your drive.
    Reinstall: If your Tiger disks are upgrade disks you will have to install 10.3 first and then upgrade to 10.4. Do not forget: Repair permissions before and after each update step!
    Stupid: No, because your disk is so full this might be the best way. Keep in mind that MacOS X needs at least 1.5 GB of free hard disk space at all times in order to work properly.
    Backup: If you select to replace the folder the system will do exactly that: Erase the old folder and copy the new one. Therefore all contents that was in the old folder is gone and you will only have what is in the new folder. Most backup applications such as Carbon Copy Cloner have a synchronize option and an option where you can select whether files that are not in the new folder should be kept or deleted.

  • Few questions about my new Lumia 920

    Hi.
    First of I'm loving the new phone.  I bought it outright and I'm currently using my rolling contact in it.  I'm on EE in the UK.
    I too have had a few hard restarts but I find it's when I'm installing an app.  Fingers crossed a software update will sort out this problem.
    Anyway a couple of quick questions.  Is there a way I can turn of the Facebook pictures appearing in my photo's ?  Also is there a way of turning of the notification bar at the top of the phone when a text message comes in ?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Mythril.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Facebook albums can only be removed from the gallery if you remove the facebook account from the phone. You can use the facebook app instead but facebook will no longer be linked to your contacts in the people hub.
    There is no way to stop the message pop up yet, Microsoft has yet to add an option to stop it.

  • A few questions about my new A720

    Hi everyone,
    I just got myself an IdeaCentre A720 (VDT8UGE) because I love the idea of a touchscreen combined with a 27" screen and the special hinge.
    For the most part it works fine and it simplified my home setup a lot (much less cables now). However it also introduces some new problems. I was wondering if anyone here has some suggestions to any of the following issues:
    - The screen coloring is very yellow-greenish and there is no way of adjusting it from the screen itself. I used the nVidia control panel to correct this and it looks OK now but the coloring on the HDMI output is a bit off due to this.
    - The HDMI IN is a great idea in my opinion. I plugged in my old machine (a pure gaming machine with a GTX) and it works fine. But is there a way to listen to the audio from HDMI IN? I set the source PC's audio to HDMI Out but it didn't help. Windows doesn't show me any audio source either. For now, I have connected a 3.5mm audio cable but I'm sure there's a more elegant solution to this.
    - The system sometimes boots but the screen doesn't turn on. I haven't found any way to reproduce this, it just happens randomly. I suspected it might have something to do with HDMI Out (because I have it connected at all times) but I was unable to find any setting regarding this. I also tried to boot into UEFI to look for such a setting but I couldn't figure out how to do that.
    - There's some weird noise coming from the built in Bluray drive when I insert a CD and it also makes some noise whenever I switch the system on. It almost sounds as if there's a disc in there but it isn't. Is this normal behavior? I'm asking because this is the first time that I have a PC with this kind of trayless optical drive.
    - According to the spec sheet the camera can shoot at 720p. Is this some sort of joke? I don't want to flame here, but the camera quality is ludicrously bad. Seriously, it's not even 240p. Am I doing something wrong here? Is it just some bug in the Windows 8 camera app?
    I hope someone can help on at least any one of these things.

    Seems like nobody else has any of these issues but nonetheless, I'd like to keep this thread up to date if you don't mind. Hopefully this will be useful to someone in the future.
    Camera
    So today I called Lenovo Support (really friendly and helpful by the way!) and as for the camera, I was asked to try some other software like Skype instead of Windows 8's Camera App.
    So I used VLC to show me the camera video. And guess what - it's 720p! Quality still isn't great but it's MILES ahead from what I've seen in the aforementioned Camera app. So that's one problem "found" at least. I still need to verify if Skype is affected. Perhaps this problem only affects Modern UI apps and not desktop apps.
    Blank screen
    The second thing I asked about was the blank screen. Unfortunately this is apparently not any known issue so the support couldn't help much but only suggest to try a factory reset. I'll hold off on that though because I spent the last three days to set everything up. I'll try to remember to remove the HDMI cable prior to switching the device on from now on and see if that helps (yes, I changed my mind - I think it's HDMI related again).
    Coloring
    The third and last thing I asked was about the display coloring. There's no way of "saving" the coloring mode but they are aware of this and there MIGHT someday be a patch. I wouldn't count on it though and I think there's a higher chance of my eyes simply adopting to the weird coloring at some point.
    While it's surely unfortunate that some of these problems seem unsolvable, I'm still glad that there's only minor issues left now. Also the phone support was quite good and I feel confident that they'll help me if I ever have some other problem in the future.
    I'd be glad if Lenovo takes all these things to heart and improves them on the next model. In my humble opinion, this is pretty much the best touchscreen AIO on the market. Oh and while you're at it, please put a USB 3.0 port to the left hand side of the display for the next model, the one on the base is barely usable if HDMI cables are plugged in.

  • Few questions about my new MA

    Just got my MA, and love it so far but a few things have me a bit lost.  Firstly, I was trying to install Google Chrome but it won't install, it just appears as a disk on my desktop when I download it.  I can run it, but I would rather not have a bunch of icons for programs sitting on my desktop.
    Also, moving from a MB Pro to this has been a change.  On my MB I could see my HD right on the desktop, but with my MA I can't.  Is there a way to put that onto my desktop?

    Double click the disk icon. Then press Command + N to open a new Finder window. Select the Applications folder from the sidebar. Then drag Chrome's icon from within the disk image to the Applications folder. You can then eject the disk by dragging its desktop icon to the trash (it will turn into an eject symbol), and Chrome will remain in your Applications folder.
    To see the HD, go to Finder > Preferences, for "Show these items on the desktop," make sure Hard disks is selected.

  • Few questions about my new laptop

    I just bought a powerbook g4 12" 1.5ghz with an 80g hd.
    i just found out that i cannot upgrade to snow leopard due to the intel processor. am i really missing out? and how can i get leopard?
    also, i need to upgrade my ram. where can i get a trusted upgrade? i am looking at things online, but i am scared of getting scammed. but i have ugraded my other pc's ram and the card i bought cheaply online worked fine. any tips for this would be great!
    thanks guys

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
    You may still be able to get Leopard from Apple by calling 800-MY-APPLE, which is the Apple online ordering store. You can't buy it locally anymore. If they are out, then you'd need to look online, with one source being hardcoremac.com or ebay. If you go ebay, ensure you're getting black-faced retail disks and not gray-faced disks, which are locked to the system types they originally shipped with.
    On ram, our Powerbooks are sensitive to the ram used, due to the memory bus architecture. If you stick with Crucial, Kingston (not their value-ram line though), or Samsung, you'll be OK.

  • Question about the new Yoga 10 HD+

    Hi
    A few questions about the new Yoga 10 HD+ which I hope you can answer.
    I bought the old model last year. Loved the design and long battery time but a few major issues made me return it.
    Somewhere I read that it can't read NTFS over USB so I presume that's the same with an NTFS formatted microSD card?
    Can it read exFAT formatted microSD cards?
    Anyone observed issues regarding audio over bluetooth?
    (I know BT isn't exactly High End HiFi but the old Yoga 10 for some odd reason - most likely a driver issue which nobody cared to fix - sounded *much* worse with quite noticeably distortion while both my phone and a cheap noname tablet I have zero fidelity issues - no matter which of my bluetooth audio devices I tried aptX or not)
    So to avoid buying this only to return it too I really would like to see if I can have my questions answered before buying it.
    While I love the form factor and long running time the above issues are just two mayor dealbreakers to me. Bad audio quality = no joy listening to spotify, local MP3s etc. No NTFS or exFAT = no large movies.
    My old noname android tablet really could use an upgrade so I'm really curious whether this can be it or I should look at the competition and sacrify form factor and battery runtime.
    Thanks in advance.
    EDIT:
    If it's not supporting either NTFS or exFAT on the microSD have anyone tried ext3 and/or ext4?
    I mean with Androids Linux roots it should be a nobrainer to support at least when it comes to royalties unlike NTFS or exFAT where there *might* be some issues with Microsoft.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thanks!
    OK. Seems I should just stay clear of this and look elsewhere
    Sony for sure I know support exFAT. I'm usure about Samsung. Odd it seems so hard to find out. File sizes of +4 GB should be taken for granted - it's not 199x anymore...
    Oh well. Wonder whether to just go for one from the competition or perhaps just save the money and wait until 64 bit catches on. Rumors is that the next Nexus 8 will be 64 bit... (I really don't expect an answer on this)

  • Few questions about mac pro before buying

    Hello all!
    I may be buying a mac pro in a month or so and have a few questions about it.
    1. ) Any one know when Apple may release the latest mac pro? Don't wanna buy some thing that'll be significantly obsolete in a few days
    2. ) Is it possible to use SATA optical drives internally? I have a SATA blu ray drive I'd like to take from my PC, if that's possible.
    3. ) Is it possible to get a graphics cards better than the 8800 GT for video games? (For use in OS X)
    4. ) Finally, is there a significant performance difference between Apple's seemingly super expensive RAM and 3rd party RAM? (Other than the heat syncs)
    Thanks for any replies.

    1. We have no idea when Apple will release any product until it's released. This is a user-to-user site so we have no more information about future products than you do.
    2. Yes, it's possible. There are two additional SATA ports on the motherboard.
    3. The only graphic cards are those provided by Apple when you order the computer as well as the non-Apple supplied ATI HD-3870 Mac/PC card. The 8800 and 3870 have close performance specs. You can find some benchmarks at Bare Feats.
    4. There's no difference between the RAM Apple installs and what you can purchase on the open market. As long as the RAM meets the required specifications and has the requisite heat sink it will work just fine.

  • Never owned a notebook before, questions about my new MBP

    I've never owned a notebook computer before, and I just bought a MBP last week... So far so great, I'm absolutely loving it. I was a PC user and made a very painless switch.
    Though I've got a few questions about what my new notebook can do. These questions are probably universally applicable to all notebooks, mac or otherwise, but I've received such positive help from these forums that I thought I'd ask here.
    1) What happens when I close the lid? I usually select SLEEP or SHUT DOWN first and wait for the action to complete, then close the MBP. WHat happens if I close it while the action is in progress? Or without selecting anything?
    2) When I leave my MBP alone for a while (notebook in the open position), the display dims and then eventually turns off. Is it sleeping? When it's asleep, can I still remote access it (VNC?) If not, is there a way to leave it running so that I can VNC into it, but turn the display off so that I don't run it needlessly?
    3) I use it as as desktop replacement, so I spend a good amount of time at my desk. When I'm done with it, I usually shut it down or sleep it and leave it plugged in. Is this OK for the battery, or should I not run the AC power when it's already charged?
    4) The MBP documentation recommends not moving the notebook while it is on (???). Does this honestly mean they recommend shutting the system down before getting up from the couch to move to the desk? What about sleeping it, e.g., can I sleep it or close the lid and then move it around?
    Thanks,
    D

    1) If you selected sleep it'll continue to do that. If you selected shutdown or retart then potentially that process can be halted and the system put to sleep right in the middle of it. If restarting or shutting down it's always best to let that finish.
    2) Yes, it'll go to sleep and should be signified by the pulsating sleep indicator.
    To access it via VNC you will need to send the "magic packet" to wake it first. This however requires an ethernet connection and will not work if connected wirelessly.
    3) It's fine, however you should stillstretch it legs on battery. I suggest you use your MBP on average for about an hour per day plus a calibration every 4-8 weeks.
    4) They probably mean that but there's no problem with moving your MBP while it's on. Just use common sense when doing so as jolts and shakes can damage the moving parts such as your hard drive. If you moving any great distance it's best to sleep it forst. Otherwise, if you're shuffling on the couch don't worry about it, just don't drop it etc.

  • Two questions about the new iWeb

    Hi
    I've got two questions about the new iWeb.
    1. Is it possible to blog online now? Meaning adding a new blog entry without having to be on your own Mac? This is a feature I've been waiting for since iWeb first was released.
    2. Is it possible to choose the format of images? Earlier editions had the option to "optimize" images but that meant it changed it into .png meaning the site got a lot heavier than if .jpg was used. And since I have relatives who still only have an isdn connection I need to be able to have the website as light as possible.
    thanks

    Ah well... thanks for the quick answer

  • A few questions about Patone colors

    I have a few questions about patone colors since this is the first time I use them. I want to use them to create a letterhead and business cards in two colors.
    1)
    I do understand that the uncoated is more washed out than the coated patone colors. I heard that this is because the way paper absorbs the inkt. This is why the same inkt results in different colors on different paper (right?). My question is why is the patone uncoated black so much different than normal black (c=0 m=0 y=0 k=100) or rich black:
    When I print a normal document with cmyk, I can get pretty dark black colors. Why is it that I cannot have that dark black color with patone colors? Even text documents printed on a cheap printer can get a darker color than the Patone color. It just looks way too grey for me.
    2) For a first mockup, I want to print the patone colors as cmyk (since I put like 10 different colors on a page for fast comparison). I know that these cmyk colors differ from the patone colors and that I cannot get a 100% representation. But is there a way to convert patone to cmyk values?
    I hope that some of you can help me out with my questions.
    Thanks.

    You can get Pantone's CMYK tints in Illustrator, (Swatches Panel > Open Swatch Library > Color Books > PANTONE+ Color Bridge Coated or Uncoated) but in my view, what's the point?  If you're printing to a digital printer, just use RGB (HSB) or CMYK. Personally, I never use Pantone's CMYK so-called "equivalents."
    Pantone colors are all mixed pigmented inks, many of which fluoresce beyond the gamut limits of RGB and especially CMYK. The original Pantone Matching System (PMS) was created for the printing industry. It outlined pigmented ink formulations for each of its colors.
    Most digital printers (laser or inkjet) use CMYK. The CMYK color gamut is MUCH SMALLER than what many mixed inks, printed on either coated or uncoated papers can deliver. When you specify non-coated Pantone ink in AI, according to Pantone's conversion tables, AI tries to "approximate" what that color will look like on an uncoated sheet, using CMYK. -- In my opinion, this has little relevance to real-world conditions, and is to be avoided in most situations.
    If your project is going to be printed on a printing press with spot Pantone inks, then by all means, use Pantone colors. But don't trust the screen colors; rather get a Pantone swatch book and look at the actual inks on both coated and uncoated papers, according to the stock you will use on the press.
    With the printing industry rapidly dwindling in favor of the web and inkjet printers, Pantone has attempted to extend its relevance beyond the pull-date by publishing (in books and in software alliances, with such as Adobe) its old PMS inks, and their supposed LAB and CMYK equivalents. I say "supposed" because again, RGB monitors and CMYK inks can never be literally equivalent to many Pantone inks. But if you're going to print your project on a printing press, Pantone inks are still very relevant as "spot colors."
    I also set my AI Preferences > Appearance of Black to both Display All Blacks Accurately, and Output All Blacks Accurately. The only exception to this might be when printing on a digital printer, where there should be no registration issues.
    Rich black in AI is a screen phenomenon, unless in Prefs > Appearance of Black, you also specify "Output All Inks As Rich Black," -- something I would NEVER do if outputting for an actual printing press. I always set my blacks in AI to "Output All Blacks Acurately" when outputting for a press. If you fail to do this, then on the press you will see any minor registration problems, with C, M, and Y peeking out, especially around black type.  UGH!
    Good luck!  :+)

  • Few questions about iPhone 4S

    Hi,
    Recently I got an iPhone 4S, it is my first new phone in a long time, before this I had an old nokia, so I just have a few questions about it.
    I havve read a alot of horror stories about the 4S battery life, mine seems ok, here is what I would like to know
    1) How long should a healthy battery last?
    2) how long should it take to charge to 100% from 1 or 2%?
    On my daily commute I use listen it to music and sometimes user twiiter/facebook. I also get alerted of emails when they come in. So far it has just about lasted just about two days maybe before I had to recharge. Is this about right? As stated above I am coming from an old nokia, which is very dated now but the battery lasted almost a week before I had to charge, so having to charge my phone this often is new to me. My iPhone is really great and I just don't want any problems. I have turned off all extras that I don't need.
    BTW are the iPhone 4S battery issues a software or hardware issue?
    Thanks

    I attempted to read your post, but in amongst all the random, unrelated waffling, I couldn't actually find exactly what your iPhone related question for this "Using iPhone" forum was.
    Would you like to clarify? Concisely.

  • Few questions about Calendar / SimpleDateFormat classes

    Hi.
    I have few questions about Calendar class:
    1. How can I get only date representation (without the time)?
    after doing:
    Calendar cal = Calendar.getInstance();
    I tried to clear unecessary fields:
    cal.clear(Calendar.SECOND);
    cal.clear(Calendar.MINUTE);
    cal.clear(Calendar.HOUR_OF_DAY);
    But after printing the time, it seems that the HOUR was not cleared:
    SimpleDateFormat sdf1 = new SimpleDateFormat("dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm:ss");
    System.out.println(sdf1.format(cal.getTime()));
    ---> 03/11/2004 17:00:00
    Am I missing somthing?
    2. I want to make sure that two different formats couldn't be compared. i.e., if I'll try to parse one String according to different format -- ParseException will be thrown.
    String date = "19/04/2004 13:06:10";
    SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("dd/MM/yyyy");
    Date dateObj = sdf.parse(date);
    However, even though that formats are different, no exception is thrown and the return Date is 19/04/2004 00:00:00.
    How can I cause to exception to be thrown if formats are not identical?
    Thanks in advanced

    The Calendar class has a few of what Microsoft would call 'features'. :^)
    To clear the time, call:
    calendar.set(calendar.get(Calendar.YEAR), calendar.get(Calendar.MONTH), calendar.get(Calendar.DAY), 0, 0, 0);
    If you want 'pessimistic' rather than 'optimistic' date parsing, you have two options:
    1) Call calendar.setLenient(false);
    See if that is strict enough for your needs, otherwise:
    2) Write code to ensure a stricter parsing of the string passed in. For example, you could very simply check the length of the string to determine if time data is also present.
    When parsing, a string like '02/29/02' would parse to the date '03/01/02'. Setting lenient to false may fix this, but the surest way is to do some testing and then make the parsing more pessimistic where it suits your needs.

    Hi
    i have few questions about cs6
    is there a way to let the ruler and straighten like cs5 ? i gave a look to my friend cs6 and cs6 ruler and straighten leave transparent image around the corner
    and is there a way to set for each adjustament layer a size ? for example i like a big curve window but for example have a smaller level windows
    thanks
    cheers

    mantralightroom wrote:
    nope
    The feature is there, where Christoph described it, though I would have liked it if they'd left an option for the Ruler Tool button to allow people to add "and crop" as well.  But Adobe have confirmed they moved it out of there on purpose, presumably because new users would expect to crop their image using the Crop Tool, not the Ruler Tool.
    mantralightroom wrote:
    i would like to know if i can store the size of each dialog window
    You MUST be talking about the Properties panel, where adjustment layer info is shown, because the dialogs you get when you do things like Image - Adjust - Levels or Image - Adjust - Curves is not resizeable in any way I can see.  At least not on a PC.
    No, there's no special option that allows dialog sizes to be saved separately.  It's just one panel, and the size of the panel itself defines the size of the contents up to each of their max sizes.

    1.Do we need shutdown / startup restrict the databaseNo - DBUA will do this automatically for you.
    2.How can we move the files to the new locationYou can after the upgrade move the datafiles to wherever you want - use the ALTER DATABASE RENAME DATAFILE (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/statements_1004.htm#i2082829) command.
    3.Can we change db_name of the databaseI do not believe this is possible with DBUA.
    4.Can we use the old database as wellNo - the database will be upgraded by DBUA - there is no "old" database.
