Few suggestion for WP8 - if at all given a thought

I have recently upgraded form Nokia N8-00 to Nokia Lumia 925 and immediately noted few very important things missing.
1: I could transfer most of my data from N8-00 to Lumia 925 except calender entries and notes. For me all calender entries and noted are equally important as my contact book and messages. I attribute this to absence of support of Nokia Suite to WP8. This was never the issue for all my previous upgrades from any Nokia to next Nokia phone. It's immensely annoying. Also now, as there is no "SUITE" for WP8, I can not back up (contacts, notes, to-do, calender entries, messages) my cell to my PC. I always have to rely on some data connection or WiFi to upload it to cloud. It's so useless that just to back the cell up I have to use data connection which is most unreliable in my country (except metros).
2: I use the cell for photography. It indeed does a nice work for me. But again..just 10 GB user available memory, which keeps going down as new phone updates and/or new software are installed. No support for expandable memory, no support for USB OTG. Have to rely again on most unreliable data connection to upload to cloud. Or else stop shooting when memory is full. This was never the issue with N8-00 as I could connect any mass storage device via USB OTG and transfer the data.
3: Location service: I don't understand why I have to turn location service on first and then open HERE maps? Why can't it be turned on automatically for maps and drive? If I turn location service on, all other apps use it and drain battery, if I turn it off, nothing can use it and battery is saved. Why can't it be selectively on just for the apps I need. For N8-00, GPS positioning used to turn on only for navigation and nothing else.
4: Smart dialing. Why was it removed? Most used featured by any cell phone user and available on each phone in the marked except so called high end WP8.
5: When camera is on, the volume rocker key still adjusts volume. What can I say now? Should it not adjust the zoom instead?
6: Store frequently shows many updates for the installed apps...but I can not select which to install...either all or none.
7: New SMS appear anywhere in the messaging, you may find it at the bottom too. They appears as per the previous messages sent by the contact. Delivery reports also appear a new message??? You can not see only sent message as there is no option to sort.
I may still find many new problems which I don't know how and why were ignored. Hope Microsoft pays attention to correct them. At least do not remove the features those were already there.If anyone finds anything more or any solution for any of the above things, you are most welcome.

A few suggestions for FCP

Using FCP to record material directly via Capture now, I have sometimes wished for a few more options:
* being able to view elapsed timecode of Capture-Now in a seperate window.
* Having an option of running a 'recording in process' signal out of a USB or serial port whenever capture now is actively capturing. By continually writing out a '1' on any one wire in the USB connector, thus enabling it to be interfaced with an external light thru the use of optocoupler circuitry.
* having an option of rejecting a 'Capture now' request by user if hard disk space or certain capture now time cannot be completed due to hard disk limitations, thus warning the user that capture now will not be able to reach specified time limits.
Some other options or suggestions on my wishlist:
* an option turning off 'beep' sound when playing back unrendered audio
* having an option to 'continue all' or 'ignore all missing media' in every media missing dialog when opening up FCP with multiple projects starting up
* having an option of starting up with no projects open by holding down the apple key (or other key) when launching FCP
* Having an option of cancelling all project openings with the locate media dialogue
* being able to keep playing sequence when you alt-tab or multitask to another application
* being able to disable countdown when using the voice-over utility, thus starting to record directly
* being able to use voice-over utility even where there is no underlying video
I already sent these suggestions via the feedback option in FCP, just wanted to share them with you all for discussion.

NO clue what you mean by this. Sorry. Does any other NLE offer this?

You mean a warning that your disk space is running low, and to stop the capture, not ABORT (thus losing what you already captured) when your hard drive space reaches a certain size of remaining space?

The point of the BEEP is to tell you that your audio needs to be rendered to play. Would you prefer silence? Convert your audio to a format FCP works with...AIFF 16 bit or WAV.

The way the VO tool is designed is to add voiceover to existing video. That is the basic design. If you want to record VO without using a sequence, just use the Capture tool.

A Few Suggestions for The i3-wm

I've been a user of i3 wm some time. Now that am new at using (only) a wm for my everyday work, I can say that am quite satisfied the way it significantly speeds up switching between different windows and workspaces. i3 has been so far quite nice with its well writ documentations (albeit a few glitches here and there).
From my experience using it, there are some recommendations to be considered for change/add in future releases of i3. I'll list them below one by one.
1. As the documentation at i3's home site describes, i3 mentains the list of windows as a tree, hence the windows obviously have a parent-child relation. And the implementation happends to be that when a parent window is terminated, the child window is also terminated. This is at most cases undesireable. For e.g. suppose you open a pdf document from your terminal and put the process to background like $ evince file.pdf & and then you close the terminal window. You'd of course like the window in which evince is running to remain open, wont you? But as per i3's default behaviour the evince window'd also be closed. Of course you can use a menu program (like dmenu) to launch such a program, but AFAI think most wm only people 'd prefer using the terminal to launch stuff. These sort of wm s are probably called non-reparenting wms. I'd like to see i3 as a reparenting one. After all, that seems logical to a wm only environment..isnt it?
2. When i3 is restarted for some reason, the processes that are start up with i3 (i'm reffering to only those added in the i3 config file, not .xinitrc) are not restarted, but rather another instance of that process is run. For e.g. suppose conky is piped to dzen or something else to be displayed in i3bar. The first time you start up i3 after boot up, they are naturally started as child processes to i3. When you restart i3, those two processes aren't killed, instead new instances of conky and dzen 'd be run ; even the bash shell created to run the command isnt terminated(obviously) . You can use pstree -p to display current process trees and restart i3 to check this. This seems to be the case even if you exit i3. Does it feel natural?
3. This one's more of a feature request(if its already not available, aint sure). Is it possible to define a different backgrounds for a perticular app? Like, I'd like to have all my focused terminal windows with a yellowish background for the border. and a blueish bg for all other apps (by bg I mean the colour of the..what should I call it.. title bars(?)'s background colour)
I tried putting this in my i3 config:

and then defining common colour codes separetely for all other windows. But seemed not to work. Is it actually possible?
It 'd be nice to have that in i3.

Yup. More precisely, I have this piece of code in my config:

After restarting i3 inplace, old myi3status.sh is left alive, while another one is being started, which makes piping information to fail.

A few suggestions for the next version of Acrobat.

Every time I use a portfolio in Acrobat, I have to click through a large number of folders
Although many of them have no content.
It would be good if there would be a number of the documents on the folder .So I would not have to open the folder, if there would be no document at all.

1) Drag&Drop. A simple drag&drop in Pages: select a text, drag&drop it somewhere else.
I've been doing this for years in AppleWorks & Pages (1, 2 & 3) & Mail, etc. The trick is to hold the cursor on the selected text for a second or so until the cursor changes to an arrow, then move the text.
2) Option-left or right arrow, bring us to the next word. How about Command-left or right key, to take us to the end or beginning of the line (like in Word).
Again, this has been in AppleWorks & Pages & Mail, etc. for years. Also, Command + up arrow goes to the top of the document, Command + down arrow goes to the end. Option + up or down arrow goes to the beginning of the previous or next paragraph.
I don't know why these wouldn't work for you.

Some Bugs and Enhancement Suggestions for Offline DB models

I really like the way that this area of JDeveloper is shaping up, but I have a couple of bugs and few suggestions for enhancements.
Bugs,
1) when adding an index to a table, you can't edit the index name. If the generated name is too long, it doesn't allow you to create the index.
2) When adding columns to an index, there is no LOV of columns so you have to manually type each one. It always defaults to the ?first column of the primary key? which seems odd.
A few enhancement suggestions:
1) on tables and columns it would be very helpful to be able to also have a logical name as well as a physical name
2) if we have a logical name, it would be then very helpful to be able to set the display properties to show the logical vs. physical table and column names
3) Tablespace objects. I would be okay if they were just the logical object (not necessarily generate DDL to create them). If I could use them as part of the table and index definitions.
4) Table partitioning.
5) Packages on a DB Diagram. Just for the documentation purpose of visually displaying all objects in an application.
6) Ability to create views based on synonyms. Currently, it only allows to pick a table or view.
Just a few items that I have encountered trying to design a full application in JDeveloper.

Suggestions for Adobe Reader for my tablet

I'm not sure if there's a better place to post this, so . . . in using Adobe Reader on my Nexus 7 tablet, I have a few suggestions for features:
It would be great if you could include a search function as you find on Adobe Reader for PC and (I assume) Apple. Not sure why this is not included in the tablet version.
When I open Adobe Reader on my tablet, it always defaults to the Recent Documents list. I would like it, if in the settings, you could have it default to open in the folder view; as it is, I have to go thru a few steps to get here which is a pain.

Also, it would help a lot to have a "fit to width" display option, as on the PC version. This would mean somewhat larger text (good) and a better fit to the 5:8 aspect ratio of most android devices.

Suggestions for improving iPhone 3G functionality.

Just made the move a couple of days agoBlackberry to iPhone because of the MobileMe functionality. Besides not having to sync anything, and the visual voicemail, I'm pretty disappointed.
A few suggestions for the next operating system.
-Copy and Paste functionality. Why they don't have this is RIDICULOUS!
-Ability to delete individual calls from call lists. It's already a function in the SMS app, why not have it in phone?.
-Calling from address book (as opposed to clicking into phone, and then contacts). If you create a new address book entry, you should be able to make a call right away.
-The ability to MUTE certain contacts when they call you. This is available on the Blackberry, and has come in very handy.
-Also, while this is not Apple's problem, a functional Facebook app. The blackberry FB app is flawless.
Any other suggestions?

Need suggestions for concurrent reads while deleting all entities

we need some suggestions for the following use case, as we cannot seem to find the correct transaction locking combination to meet our needs.
We are using BDB JE 4.1.10, and the entityStore is transactional. In a nutshell, BDB JE is used as a Cache for specific data that is pulled and updated regularly from a source Oracle DB. The application that holds BDB is a realtimel app, and response time is critical.
In order to avoid having to merge (Insert/update/delete) entities for some of the tables that are very static and small (a few hundred records that might change every day or so), we are trying to simply delete all records (with an EntityCursor loop, since there is no 'deleteAll' that we could find) and reinsert all data every 5 minutes, and then committing when the whole process is complete. This should always be very quick, but we are not immune to timeouts from the source Oracle DB, so the transaction can be long.
Ideally, while the delete/insert is happening, we want any concurrent read operations to return the old data (before the delete). We have made a test that locks the updater thread between the 'delete all' and 'update all' methods, so that the delete cursor is closed, but the Tx is not yet commited. We have tried the following for our reader thread:
1- If we get() a deleted entity with a LockMode.READ_UNCOMMITTED, we get a null entity back.
2- If we get() a deleted entity with LockMode.READ_COMMITTED, we get a LockTimeoutException.
We have also considered simply using truncate on the EntityStore, but this requires closing and reopening the DB, so this would not work for our need to always return a value, instantly.
Any ideas, suggestions on how we could do this in a simple manner?

Hello Max,
I understand the issue you're describing.
I think the best performing solution by far is to load the new data into new databases while servicing reads from the old databases. When the load is complete, reads can be diverted to the new databases, and the old databases can then be removed.
Unfortunately, this is easier to do with the base API than with the DPL, because the DPL is managing the underlying (base API level) databases for you.
However, even using the DPL, this approach could be very straightforward if you happen to be keeping this data set (the one that needs to be reloaded) in a separate EntityStore, or you can change your application to do so. If so, you can create a new (empty) EntityStore with a different name and use this store for loading the new data. When the load is complete, divert reads to the new EntityStore object and remove all databases for the old EntityStore.
If this is impractical, please explain, and I'll try to suggest a different solution. If you cannot use a separate EntityStore for this particular data set, then the solution may be more complex.

Go to the Apple Store webpage and in the upper right go to Account and select Track an Order. There you will find the status of your order. You only get a tracking order when the items ships.

It's a tray loading drive, there should be a little hole next to it, just large enough for a paper clip. Stick the end of the paper clip in it and the tray should open.

Yes, a plugin or an extension either one...
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
Deselect: Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
If it's not a plug-in issue, select the Extensions tab. If there are any extensions installed, turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that made a difference, uninstall one at a time, quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the culprit.

- do you need more RAM? (run Activity Monitor and see how much free RAM - green - is available)
- do you Restart fairly regularly, e.g. at least once a week, to clear out any swap or temporary files?
- do you need to do maintenance, e.g. clearing out caches and unused logs, etc?
