FF 12.0 saves images of each webpage I visit to my cache folders. Is this a feature or malware?

FF 12.0 is saving images of the top of each webpage I visit into my profile's cache folders.
I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Build 10K549, MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HD, and Intego VBX6, updated daily.
In Terminal, the "file" command with the path to an image file, shows e.g.:
.../Cache/7/63/DB1B8d01: PNG image, 201 x 127, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced
Though the images are small, someone might be able to see, e.g., a credit card number that the user entered!
In the Finder, Quick Look shows each image as the top of each webpage visited, but for externally loaded webpages it is an image of only the webpage portion of the window, not the window's toolbar nor status bar.
Images of webpages are saved two seconds after the page loads (per Quick Look which, unlike Get Info, shows Date Modified time including seconds).
The problem occurs even in Safe Mode after a reboot.
It occurs in FF 12.0 at the administrator user account level and in FF 12.0 running in standard level user accounts.
After backing up my profile and deleting the 04/24/2012 installed update of FF 12.0 (from FF 11), and downloading a new version today 04/29 from http://mozilla.org/firefox (the cache was already cleared from the last FF session), I tested it again, via Help menu, Firefox Help. The page loaded and the cache contained the pages normal icons and images, AND an image of the top portion of this webpage.
The images do not match those used by Tab Groups, nor those used when tabs are moved around each other (comparing the images shows they don't quite match either one).
Keeping the browse window's width the same, but pulling the bottom of the browse window up, until only a couple of inches of the page is visible causes the image to show only the top left corner of the webpage.
If the Add-ons page is also opened and another page is visited (where a new tab is created), an image of the newly visited page is created, AND an image of the Add-ons is created too, but NOT the page the user sees, but rather the older style Firefox window with gray tab buttons in the toolbar showing 4 tabs "Get Add-ons, Extension, Themes, Plugins (which is depressed)". In this window's toolbar on the left are the normal three buttons, each grayed out as if the window is inactive, then the Add-ons title, with the pill button on the right. Below are whatever plugins you have installed with blue lego block icons to the left and their related text, listed below in rows. The top row is highlighted in yellow and that row alone has a "Disable" button. This image even includes a white background around the window. Yet this image does NOT match what the user sees, which is the Add-ons newer full-page style, where the tabs are in a column on the left side and Add-ons are listed in the column on right with a Gear button above, over a blue background.
BTW: I've just pasted the Troubleshooting Information data into the field below, but the copy and paste isn't showing tabs between the preference names and their values, nor return characters, so everything runs together.

I see these, too, running Fx12 on Windows 7. They are described in the (extremely voluminous!) about:cache interface as page thumbnails. I've attached some screen shots.
The text is extremely difficult to see, so I don't know whether it is a serious privacy/security risk. I would be curious to know how long they linger.
I think these support the Windows feature of showing a preview of a window or tab when you float over a taskbar button. (No idea whether there is a similar preview feature on Mac.) This feature is not enabled by default; users need to enable it in about:config. However, add-ons may be able to use the thumbnails because they have privileged access to the cache.
(Note: This feature was added pursuant to [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=497543 497543 – Provide a thumbnail service]. It "landed" on or about Jan. 28, 2012, so its first appearance in a released version of Firefox might have been Fx12.)

  • Image changes each time you visit the site

I want to use a selection of images on my home page which change every time you visit the website. For example, on your first visit it might be an image of a dog, then on your second visit it could be an image of a cat.
Here is another example of this technique... http://www.applebybowers.com/ When you click the refresh button, the background image changes.
Does anyone know how this can be done?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Vicky,
go to http://www.projectseven.com/products/galleries/irm/index.htm or there (it's a German website, admittedly, but I'm sure you will understand the instructions easily):

  • Reduce steps to save PDF 'Print' of webpages

I save images of many webpages for my work. However, I count at least 5 key strokes and/or mouse clicks to complete each PDF 'Print': 1) Print, 2) PDF, 3) Save as PDF, 4) name file and select location, 5) Save.
How may I reduce the number of steps to 'Print' PDFs of websites in Safari?
    Many thanks in advance!

Change the Export PDF Preset and Print Preset names to the ones you are using.

  • Save Image ..why is it missing from Firefox when IE has it ?

Such a fundamental thing to have as the ability to save an image is missing from Firefox and as I have gone over to Firefox from IE I am dumbfounded as to why Mozilla fails to feature this. Why is this ? I have the add on but you get 'save images from current tab', when right clicking on an image that has launched on screen after clicking on a thumbnail, and you end up with hundreds of images, every damn bit of the webpage, the big image is indistinguishable from its thumbnail and every image has to be looked at and discarded until one finds the bigger versions. Who in their right mind would want every little bit of a webpage ? The large images look the same as the thumbnails and each one has to be enlarged to see if its the big image or not.
A task that took seconds in IE takes half an hour.
Can we see Firefox catch up with IE6 for image saving ?

Having now tried another website, where images do not have thumbnails, I have 'save image as', though the dropdown window is empty, no options on file type, its those where clicking a thumbnail sees a new window appear, rotating dots then the image occurs. No save image as, only the save image plugin which proceeds to capture everything. Trying IE on this I see also no save image option, so I guess its the website not Firefox. I shall have to use printscreen button I guess.
I dont know why the dropdown combobox gives no options of file type, IE6 didnt have much but jpg or bmp was offered.

Used to be able to save images from webpages but now with IOS 5, I can only save to reading list even when viewing a page whose images I could save as an image when using the previous OS.

Are you using the YouTube widget in iWeb?  If so it doesn't work any more. Not since MobileMe was discontinued.
You need to get the full embed code from YouTube and use the standard HTML snippet.

  • Is there anyway i can save it as a webpage

Hi i made a website layout in photoshop. is there anyway i can save it as a webpage or something, either with Photoshop or ImageReady?

Yes you can, part of converting a Photoshop layout to a web page is to save it so it is compatible with the web. Go to 'file' and choose 'save for web'. The save box will appear and you need to either save your page along with slices as HTML or CSS. At this time, you can give each slice a name so you are able to find it easier when you go to update the site. Click on 'save' and then change the 'save as type' to HTML images.

Are you using Microsoft word?  Microsoft thinks the users are idiots. They put up a lot of pointless messages that annoy & worry users.  I have seen this message from Microsoft word.  It's annoying.
    As BDaqua points out...
When you copy information via edit > copy,  command + c, edit > cut, or command +x, you place the information on the clipboard. When you paste information, edit > paste or command + v, you copy information from the clipboard to your data file.
If you edit > cut or command + x and you do not paste the information and you quite Word, you could be loosing information.  Microsoft is very worried about this. When you quite Word, Microsoft checks if there is information on the clipboard & if so, Microsoft puts out this message.
You should be saving your work more than once a day. I'd save every 5 minutes.  command + s does a save.

  • I need a script that can save images in whatever directory they reside in

I am working on a project where I have over 1500 directories that have multiple .TIF images in each one. I am looking for a solution where I can run a script (which may or may not call on actions) that allows me to save each .TIF as a .PSD and again as a .PNG (with specific optimization settings) in the same directory as the original .TIF. The main idea here is I need to be able to run the script and walk away. So I'm looking for a one press option for each directory.
I can create an action that saves the files in the proper format but when I record the action it saves the file in "folder 1". When I run this action again on "folder 2" it saves the images in "folder 1."  I could certainly make adjustments in the "Batch" dialog box by choosing the over ride "save as" function but the goal is to not have to do that 1500 times.
So, my question is, is there a single script out there that can save images next to the original .TIFFS regardless of what directory the reside in? I'm no scripting guru, but perhaps the code uses something with a "this" command to specify the folder to save images to? Is this even possible? If so, are there web sites I can buy this from? Is there a scripting community that can provide these services?
Any help to point me in the right direction is much appreciated.
    Mike

You could try my Picture Processor ...

    Use the second download.

  • Unable to save images in certain directories/folders; but properties are fine.

    Linux, FF 3.6.17 under Ubuntu
When I attempt to save images embedded in a webpage by right-click->"Save Image As...", the result depends on the directory in which I attempt to save. In some directories, I get a Download Error message that reads "....could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder. Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location." The directory mode (permissions) are just fine. Saving the file in my normal Downloads directory and then moving the file by hand in a terminal window works fine as well. Disabling all add-ons had no effect. Running in safe-mode had no effect.
Investigating this further, I appear to generate this error message when I try to save the image to a directory located on a different file system than the one on which my homedir and default downloads directory are based; this is true regardless of whether I navigate the file browser to that directory on another file system and try to save, or whether there's a symbolic link to that other file system's directory in my homedir. Attempts to save to directories on the same file system as my homedir/default downloads dir work just fine.
    Any advice here? Thanks.

I'm not sure if it sounds the same or not, but it sure doesn't sound "normal," but I don't work much with network-stored images and other users who might have linked to them. As far as I know there is nothing in link in ID that would cause it to appear to be open, but as I see inthe other thread I once had the problem myself, so who knows.
Are you patched to 6.0.6? I don't see anything in the release notes specifically related to the can't save problem, but there were a number of image and link related fixes.

  • "Save Image As" does not appear on the right click menu of an image I want to save.

Trying to save images as a file to my desktop/laptop. I right click on the image and the menu appears. The entry Save Image As... is not present on the menu. How do I get the menu to show this entry?
I've heard that the problem may have something to do with plug-ins, but I've reinstalled and disabled each of them. It didn't change anything.

Does that happen with all images or only on specific web pages?
Can you post a link if the later applies?
Can you save the images via Tools > Page Info > Media ?
    To be sure:
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
You can also try "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the [[Safe mode]] start window.

  • Safari 5 doesn't show all images on a webpage

    Hi,
I'm using Safari 5, and my Safari doesn't always show all the images on a webpage but shows a "blue question mark" instead of an image. sometime when I try to reload the webpage, the image (that was a blue question mark) appears but some other images become the "blue question mark".
The "Display images when the page opens" checkbox is checked, the connection has no problems…
I've tried on Safari 5 on my PC, and it doesn't have this problem, all the images loaded well. The problem seems like only appears in Safari on Mac.
    it's really annoying…
    Any idea, please.

    HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset. Relaunch Safari. Try loading a page now. If you still have problems...
Web pages include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
Relaunch Safari and try again. If that didn't help...
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
If nothing above helps, login to another user account and try Safari there. If you have problems with pages loading correctly there, then it's a system wide problem. Hopefully not.

  • Save Image in ACR 5.6 vs. Open/Save from Photoshop CS4

Apologies in advance if this turns out to be cockpit error. Recently started shooting again, after a long hiatus, and boy there have been some changes over the past few years. I feel like Rip Van Winkle.
Was used to early versions of ACR with CS2 and thought I was doing just fine finding my way around a new PC using ACR 5.6 RC with Photoshop CS4, when I processed my first shoot using the two. Followed my old/usual raw workflow with Photomechanic selects -> Bridge -> batch processing with Photoshop, when I noticed the JPEGs PS was saving from my PS Action didn't reflect adjustments I had set in ACR/Bridge.
The Action was pretty simple, just did an open, a few simple adjustments, profile/mode conversion, and a save as JPEG. I tried running the Action two different ways, once from Bridge and once directly in PS, and got the same result.
Scratching my head (this stuff used to work fine), I opened all the images into ACR from Bridge, clicked Select All, then clicked Save Images, and saved them as JPEGs into a folder. This worked, where each JPEG written reflected the crop, WB, exposure/brightness, contrast/black settings I had made through ACR/Bridge.
Any idea what I've overlooked? I tried this using both 32-bit and 64-bit PS. The PC is running Win7 RTM x64. The camera body is a Canon 7D, which is why I installed ACR 5.6 RC. I'm otherwise really tickled with everything. Nice to see the progress made by everyone in the industry while I was away. Thanks in advance...

If you are running an action during a Batch operation you need to be sure that either you DON'T record ad Open step and select Suppress File Open and Color Profile Warnings in which case the Camera Raw settings in play for a given image will be processed in or make sure you _DO_ record an open step making sure you select the correct workflow settings (color space, resolution, etc) but without making ANY adjustments while recording the open step and make sure you've selected the Override Action Open Command...
It's confusing until you understand what it is your are or not recording...
When you record a an open step while selecting the Workflow settings and NOT making any image adjustments all you are recording is the workflow settings. Then in Batch you tell the Batch to ignore the Open command and only use the Workflow settings...
Otherwise you don't actually need to record an explicit open step...you won't have any absolute control over what Workflow setting are in play-but since the Workflow settings are sticky you can open an image to double check the settings and click Done and then you've set the Workflow settings manually (not in an action).
The other oddity when recording an open action step in Photoshop is that the actual command to open must come from Photoshop...this may seem simple but it's not. I keep a spare raw file on the desktop so when recording an Open action I can start in Photoshop and turn on recording then drag & drop the raw file onto my Photoshop Icon to make sure Photoshop is opening the image then click to set the Workflow settings and specifically do NOT make any other image adjustment steps (they would also be recorded) and continue with the Open, then whatever other steps you need to add before recording the Save and Close steps (yeah, same tricky deal on the end with the Save As recorded and the Override Action Save As Commands...
If all of the above makes your eye's glaze over (the best time to learn how to do this stuff is NOT when you are under the gun or a deadline) I suggest you try using Image Processor...easier to set up and learn, not nearly as powerful as a Batch Action though...

  • How to "Save Image" directly instead of "Save Image As"?

Is there anyway or option to directly save images instead of having to click "save image as" then go into the popup to save the image location? Thank you!

    Gingerbread Man made good suggestions.
However you still must "save as" something even if "unnamed001". Windows requires a name and location for each file (whether an image or other file) saved. You can have the same file name in different directories (folders).
You can copy and paste images without saving, in some applications.

  • How do I "Save Image As"?

In Netscape I can click (I have a standard mouse, not one with right and left clicks) on an image and get a list of choices, one in particular called "Save Image As..." When I click onto that I am able to not only save the image from the webpage but I am also able to rename the file and download it into any file of my choosing that I have on my computer. How can you do this in Safari? I have tried the 'control' 'option' and apple' keys, and all they will do is allow me to download the image onto my desktop. I then have to rename the file and then drop it into the proper file. This is a lot of hassle and work compared to Netscape. Is there a way to do this in Safari, and if not, Apple would you please incorporate that feature into a future update release for Safari? Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Lisa,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Control + Click on the image (release the control key, but continue to hold the mouse click) then depress the Option Key which will change the "Save Image to the Desktop" command to read "Save Image As..." and then select the Save Image As... link. You will then see the the "Save As:" field which can be expanded by clicking on the ▼ arrow. You will now be able to name the file and navigate to the desired save location.

  • How to change background image for each individual page in a template?

I've been working for hours to try to figure out how to change the background image for each individual page in a template.  I have tried making a div in the body and adding a CSS and setting a background picture.  Unfortunately even after I made it editable all templated webpages changed.  I tried looking at different forum results which didn't really help me out. http://forums.adobe.com/message/2670005#2670005#2670005.  I've also tried embeding a CSS style on the webpage instead of the external CSS which again didn't work.  I'm not sure where to go from here.  Is there a good video that explains this clearly.  Please help.  Thanks.
