FF 15.0.1 repeatedly freezes my entire computer; can't forcequit; need power button to shut down/restart; completely random, not an addon issue.
This is a freeze, not a crash, so I can't submit info to Mozilla. I've been through this in repeated updates, and it's only getting worse. FF used to be stable, now it's unreliable. I have OS X 10.6.8, fully updated. I have only 2 add-ons: Jave Applet Plug-in 13.8.3 and Shockwave Flash 11.4.402.265. It's entirely random, and usually with an ordinary site, with no video or pop-ups or anything moving. Force-quitting doesn't work; FF shows it's closed in the dock but the window is still open on the screen, and the beachball is spinning. It progressively freezes each app I click on, and finally I have to use the power button to shut down and restart. Again, this is getting worse, not better. I moved to FF because IE and Safari were so bad, but now FF is no better. Thankfully Word seems to save whatever I'm working on if I have to shut down, but email doesn't. With this kind of freeze, I'm not given the option to submit info to Mozilla - everything is frozen, the submit window doesn't even appear.
I spent many years on OSX 10.4 using FF with little problem. It was a bit bloated but worked fine.
Once I got a new machine and went to 10.6, my FF experience went downhill fast. I'm now on 10.6.8 and FF15 and it's by far the worst experience I've ever had with a browser.
It is, frankly, abysmal.
It locks up constantly, grinds away on the hard drive, seems unable to deal with javascript without slowing to a turgid crawl. It freezes seemingly at random and ties up my whole machine.
In the course of a typical working day, I estimate I have to force quit FF around 40 - 50 times. If I start or quit any other app, FF locks up shortly after.

MacBookPro15.4 less than a year old keep freezing/locking with black dialog box to press power button until off and restart THEN repeat successive times after restarting it?
If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents – the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. -
A few days ago my G5 started to freeze up while in use. It doesn't matter if in Safari, iTunes, Pages, etc. The cursor will not respond nor does any keystroke, force quit, escape, etc. I have to hold the power button down to shut the computer down. Then, try to restart. Sometimes restart will work and the computer will work for a while and then freeze again. Other times on restart, instead of the Apple logo at start up, I get a Zero with a line thru it, have to power off and restart again. When it does restart, the "spinning gear" takes a lot longer than normal to spin up and take me to the login screen. Have been told it may be my hard drive getting ready to fail. Have looked at disk utilities, S.M.A.R.T looks fine, "verified" and have verified disk, and repaired permissions. In case it is the hard drive, I bought external hard drive and hooked it up to Time Machine. The backing up to a long time, overnight, about 10 hours because it kept freexing up and I would have to shut down and try restarting again. Finally got everything backed up.
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated!!! Could it be my hard drive is dying? Is the the normal chain of events or is it something else???Ok, to copy the Drive from one to another, get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

Believe it or not, anything on the Desktop uses 3 times the Resources of the Mac than if stored elsewhere, I can note a slowdown from just 30 items on the Desktop on a really fast Mac, so the less the better on the Desktop.
DW will not tell you about Bad Sectors, it's just the very best at Repair Directory damage & such.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process. -

When I put my macbook pro to sleep and I come back a few hours later and turn my external monitor on I notice that the macbook is ON, BUT frozen! The time is usually a few hours back, so the macbook must have started up and frozen shortly after I had put it to sleep. There is no way to restart but to hold down the power button, SUPER annoying!
Hope this will get addressed in an update. Any way your problem is connected to sleep mode? -
Can anyone help? Mbp froze and pressed power button to shutdown. Now can't reboot :(

IDVD 4 now freezes the entire computer during burning
Hello,
iDVD 4 now freezes my entire computer during burning somewhere around stage 3. I can't even force quit. This never happened before - it does so while burning a project that had been burned successfully many times in the past and also new projects. I did have a bad RAM problem weeks ago - which is fixed now. Tried fixing permissions and cleared out enough free space. This is wierd - it has been working for years.
Thanks very much,
NIck M.Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iDVD.
• Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
• Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
• Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

MBP freezes, shuts down, restarts, repeats after log in
Late 2007 MBP recently upgraded to Yosemite started freezing, shutting down by itself, and then restarting by itself. I log in, and within anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes after my screen fully loaded, repeats this. 120 gig hard drive is way full. So pretty sure that is part of problem. Has been sluggish for weeks. Have about 18 gigs free. Attempting to move things off but it won't stay on long enough to do this.
This morning I managed to access Disk Utilities for repair upon start up, but I was trying different keystrokes to do this. (Posed question for proper keys to do this in another post, but feel free to answer here.) It performed disk repair and showed all the steps it took. Two items appeared in red:
Incorrect number of file hard links
Orphaned file inode (id = 35716717)
Then in green:
The Volume MacIntosh HD was repaired successfully.
A couple of lines farther down appeared:
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
By this time the timer status showing the repair taking place was gone and I didn't do anything for about ten minutes. Then I restarted, but the problem has continued. While doing this I was offline.I forgot to add that right after the note that the HD was repaired successfully appeared:
File system check exit code is 0. -
When opening my itunes store, my entire computer freezes. In general my itunes works, allowing me to listen to my music still, but as soon as I enter the store my entire laptop freezes and I have to turn my laptop off manually. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes, but this hasn't remedied the problem. Is there anything that can be done in order for me to use my itunes store again?
Hi simplytorilove813,
If you are having an issue with your iPhone becoming unresponsive, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

I've had this macbook since August of last year, so it is still relatively new. For about a month the 'beach ball of death' has frozen my computer at least a couple times a week, which then I am forced to shut down the computer. What could be a reason for the constant freezing??
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report—it will be very long and not helpful. -
I downloaded Mavericks about 3 months ago. Eversince I have been experiencing frequent system "freezes" not always accompanined by the spinning color ball. When this occurs I can do nothing but power down.
Also another issue: After shutting down and opening numbers I get the message that updates are available.. When I go the Apple store it tells me there are no updates available I am using Numbers 09 version 2.1. I thought when I downloaded Mavericks I got the latest version, but apparently not.
normfromncWhen you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Not sure if anyone else is experiencing the same issue of the screen freezing or suddenly enlarging. I'm having to shut down and restart as much as five or six times a day. This has been happening pretty regularly for the past week or more, but seems to be getting worse. Could it be the last software update?
Close all apps in Multi-Task Window.
1. Double tap the home button to bring up the multi-tasking view
2. Swipe the app's windows upwards to close
3. The app will fly off the screen -
Why freezing (mini 2011) and how to get out from there without shutting down?
Still difficult to know why/what action/what behaviour, but why am I getting (at least once avery 4-5 hours of use, to be fair...), a hang/freeze (that kaleidoscope ball...) - sometimes with nothing special (it just happened as I was starting to write this message!...) ?
I hear people who are going for years (or at least they claim it) without a single freeze or crash wth their Mac (reason why I invested in one mini, and soon another one...).
Ok I would get it if I had 5 apps going on with 4GB of ram (still, depends which apps...). I get it with Photo Booth, I get it with Microsoft Office 2011 (a simple plain Word document), I get it surfing on Safari... So nothing very ''specific''.
And sometimes, it is the shut down that freezes.... I come up hours later or the day after and realize it had not completed shut down (still that rolling wheel on the white background).
I have all OS X (Lion) and other apps updates to date.
So, to which extent is it ''normal'' to get a crash (or is it a crash ? - when I cannot go further and there is no other way but to force shut down physically (Power button)? - And is there another way to get out from there on a Mac ? (Being a Windows user, my automatic reflex would be Ctrl+Alt+Del... when this works...)

Since upgrading to iOS 6,my 4s freezes up, and I have had to restore it once already. Today it looks like I will need to do it again, as I cant even submit my passcode after entering it. Updated apps shut down unnexpectedly, including newest versions of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIN. I thought this new iOS provided GREATER integration with Facebook? Instead, I am forced to access it on other devices and "gasp" my Windows PC! More quality misses on top of the Maps fiasco, Mr. Cook?
Try:
- Reset the iPhone. Nothing will be lost
Reset: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iPhone.
