FF 4 uses 1.6 GB of RAM

Firefox 3.x wasn't very good with RAM, but 4 is just plan absurd. I have AdBlock and FireBug installed (plus QuickTime & Flash).
After viewing a bunch of web sites over a few days, I can close all of the tabs and windows down to a single one. FF still uses 1.6 GB of RAM. Eventually it will use so much Windows XP grinds to a halt thrashing the disk until I kill FF. (It's completely frozen at this point.)
It appears to allocate memory for pages, perhaps JavaScript, and never releases it. It never decreases memory usage. Right now it's using 800 MB after just a couple of days. I have two tabs open. This one and Google Reader. Closing Google Reader doesn't help.
This is completely reproducible, every few days it gets dog slow and I have to restart it. You can sort of tell tings are getting bad when you can't watch YouTube movies smoothly. The video freezes for several seconds, although the audio keeps going. Restarting FF corrects this.
Chrome and Safari don't seem to do this on my XP box.

As I long time FF user (1st 20,000 downloaders) I am so disappointed with 4.0.
I find similar problem. 3.6.16 used approx. 6% of 2Gb RAM, 4 has been reported at 25%. Not caused by extensions as installed over 3.6 with no change in same few exts. Many other problems (e.g. 4 fails to remember allowed redirects & many undesired changes) so resorted to backup of 3.6. Not a definitive answer, but one sure to work is to install a totally portable version of 3.6.16 (or even 4 if you wish to play around with it), there are many portable versions available which do not mess with anything else on your machine, just Google Firefox Portable. I almost exclusively use Portable progs. for everything nowadays and if issue crops up it is as simple as deleting the folder it was installed in. Also it can be copied to a Flash Drive complete with all exts. & settings and used on any win os PC. This is a good recommendation.

  • Speedgrade CC 2014.2 build 8.2x51 unsmooth/choppy 4K playback with GPU R9 295x2 - it uses only 2 GB of RAM (Windows 8.1 64Bit), Mac OS - same problem

    Hello, guys
    I have following configuration:
    i7-5960x @ 4.3 GHz
    32 GB DDR4 RAM
ATI 295x2 8GB (Gpusniffer.exe shows 3072 MB on each Hawaii unit)
    M.2 Ultra Samsung XP941 (>1000Mb/sec)
Few 850 Pro SSD for H.264 4k source
Latest Speedgrade CC build at 16/02/2015 (DUAL MONITOR SETUP - 2560x1440 for Interface and 4096x2160 for Preview)
I work with a lot of short 10-15 seconds 4K 4096x2160 24FPS H.264 clips from Panasonic GH4. Import them to Premiere CC as is, some warp stabilization, cut them, save project and open in Speedgrade CC. Everything is fantastic smooth in Premiere CC.
In Speedgrade - some simple color correction - Exposition, some keyframes and the most simple grading for some material. I use GPU acceleration for sure to have full 4096x2160 4K 24FPS. But it is not responsive and smooth after some correction is applied. Everything is choppy and freezes first seconds, when I press "PLAY". I used Resources monitor, Task manager (Winodws 8.1 64-bit) and Afterburner. And there is what I found out:
Afterburner shows utilization of single GPU (as we know for playback only 1 GPU used) the same amount like in Premiere. Speedgrade CC uses 2,5GB VRAM. By the way, if I use some none-gpu-accelerated effect, like "transform", for example, imported from Premiere, I will get "Not enough GPU resources" message in Speedgrade. Afterburner shows, that Speedgrade CC tried to utilize more, then max. available VRAM 3GB during this moment. So I switch off such effects, before open project in Speedgrade.
Processor is also low on utilization (15%), maybe even a little lower, then in Premiere CC
Disk - 3-10%, H.264 is low on it
RAM !!! - is the problem. I allowed to use 29 GB of RAM to Adobe apps. Speedgrade CC uses not more, then 2-3 GB according to Taskmanager (mostly 2GB) and Resources Monitor of Windows 8.1 64Bit Pro. After I finished with color correction, opened project in Premiere CC, everything works smooth with lumteri on and! Premiere CC uses 9-10 GB of RAM to play the same clip at full resolution smoothly!!!
I already reinstalled everything, including drivers for GPU, Windows 8.1 and Adobe CC. Same result.
    Macbook Pro Retina 15 late 2013 with i7-4960HQ/16gb RAM/Geforce 750m UPDATE!
Under Mac Os Yosemite 10.10.2 - same situation here. Premiere CC uses 5GB (of 11GB available) for 4096x2160 Prores 422 HQ and is usable, smooth with some frame drops.
Speedgrade CC uses 2,5 GB of RAM for 4096x2160 and it is impossible to use full 4096x2160. Only 1/2 Resolution for preview is smooth and usable at notebook display. At external 4096x2160 monitor connected through Thunderbolt it is much more choppy, I think it is hard for 750m with 2 GB of VRAM.
UPDATE! Previous version (CC 2014) of Premiere CC and Speedgrade CC under Windows 8.1 64-bit - same situation.
    What do you think?
My opinion - Speedgrade CC is not optimized for 4K resolutions. Premiere CC is good for 4K.
btw, for information, latest AMD catalyst omega driver 14.12 has a problem with my R9 295x2 and Mercury Playback Engine (MPE) OpenCL - just the black screen with sound, when I turn on GPU acceleration. So I use previous 14.9 version. With 14.12 GPUsniffer.exe found one GPU device with 4Gb of VRAM and one GPU with 3GB of VRAM (normally must be 3GB+3GB for 295x2 Dual GPU-chip radeon).

So, I got MSI 290x 8GB tested and... found out that I can't use 8GB of VRAM, because there are some AMD driver limitations!!!
    1. I switched off my 295x2 8Gb (4GB+4GB) to be sure, it will not affect VRAM amount.
    2. I launched Gpusniffer utility with 14.9 AMD driver and 3072 Mb VRAM was available ONLY! It worked like 295x2 with 3072 + 3072 Mb VRAM.
    3. I installed 14.12 AMD Omega driver and GPUsniffer informed that I have now 8192 Mb!!! But! Mercury Playback Engine did not work with Premiere Pro CC or Speedgrade CC as with my 295x2. Just black screen.
RGB and Luma at 0 and preview is black with 14.12 AMD driver. Premiere PRO - the same situation.
With 14.9 AMD Driver. Left 2560*1440 Dell working area monitor and 4096*2160 preview LG monitor right side.
With 14.9 Gpusniffer shows 3 and 3 and 3GB Vram instead of 4GB and 4GB and 8Gb. As I understood with CrossfireX switched off - Adobe products and their GPUsniffer utility could "find" and use 8GB on primary GPU, but again we can see AMD driver issues.
Single 290x 8GB with 14.9 AMD driver also displays only 3072 Mb available in Gpusniffer.
NEATVIDEO informed on their website in Bugs section about 14.12 driver problem with MPE. They also wrote about problem to AMD, so I did. I think, this is really bad story. So, AMD, we are awaiting for normal drivers.

You can select table name dynamic way , but you have to write ABAP code (Selection screen).
post this question in ABAP forum. you will get more information.

  • Media Encoder CS6 Not using all CPU Cores or RAM

I'm currently exporting a 90 second video (using the Vimeo HD 1080p preset), and it is taking about 30 minutes. This is extremely strange as I have an i7-990x OC'ed @4.5, 12GB RAM, SSD, etc.
I looked at Performance tab in Windows Task Manager, and saw 4 threads were not being used at all, only 20-25% of the CPU was in use, and only 6GB out of the 9GB I specified was being used.
Why isn't Media Encoder making full use of my CPU and RAM?

I'm having the same problem. But even worst.
For the test, I take a 10 min .mov or mp4 file, simply modify the "scale", and hit the export.
a 10 min file is taking 4 hours to render.
    This is on a:
    2012 MacBookPro i7 2.3Ghz, 16 GB 1600 DDR3, SSD disk. - Mac OSX 10.7.5
    and a:
    2011 iMac i7 3.7Ghz, 16 GB 1333 Mhz, 7200 RPM HD - Mac OSX 10.7.5
The CPU stays at 90% idle the whole time.
I know this is an old thread, but maybe someone could give me a hand.

  • Linux 64-bit cannot use all of my 4GiB RAM.

Well, please forgive my nooby-ness but here is my problem:
Long ago I heard that 32-bit system cannot use 4GiB or more of RAM unless we turn on PAE option in kernel and 64-bit system can avoid this. So I installed 64-bit linux since I planned to upgrade my box to 4GiB Ram in the future. But somehow linux refuse to recognize all of my 4GiB Ram. I can only get 3.7GiB when run cat /proc/meminfo
    [pntruongan@myhost ~]$ cat /proc/meminfo
    MemTotal: 3720600 kB
    MemFree: 2406720 kB
    Buffers: 85732 kB
    Cached: 588172 kB
    SwapCached: 0 kB
Given that intergrated VGA took away roughly 256MiB of Ram then if I do the math right, I still have 3932160 kB left. Where is the rest?

See how BIOS report memory (e820 messages on dmesg)
Example in my system with 4GiB of RAM
    BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009f000 (usable)

Only "usable" areas are used as "memory"
Sometimes, these usables areas are set to reserved by kernel:
e820 update range: 0000000000000000 - 0000000000010000 (usable) ==> (reserved) <- First 64KiB marked as reserved to avoid unwanted memory modifications surprise by BIOS.
    e820 remove range: 00000000000a0000 - 0000000000100000 (usable)
    e820 update range: 00000000dff00000 - 0000000100000000 (usable) ==> (reserved)
Just sum these areas and you get available memory, and ahead you can see how from this memory, some ranges are used for kernel only.

  • Any idea why mail.app would be using over 2 gigs of RAM???

    App: Mail.app
    % CPU: 66.2
    Threads: 16
    Real Mem: 2.33 GB
Any idea why? I mean it's just sitting there behind my other applications. I'm not doing anything with it other than waiting for incoming mail...

My mail is using more than 2G of RAM as well. Usually starts out ok, but eventually (within a day or 2), it is using 2 of 4G of RAM and brings my mac to a grinding halt where there is a 30-60 second delay (spinning beachball) every time I click something (link in safari, file on hard drive, etc.) At these times, mail will not quit normally and needs to be force quit. Other apps stop responding for short periods of time too.
No out of the ordinary use of Mail, just checking/writing email. No vpn or exchange server.
Does anyone know why this keeps happening and how to stop it? Reboot helps, but problem comes back. Thank you.

It depends on the uses you give to your computer, because the battery will have capacity for less time if you are using professional apps than using Safari. Theoretically, the MacBook Pro with Retina display battery should have capacity for 7 hours, but as I said, this will decrease depending on the apps

    can i install a ddr3 pc10600 1333mhz ram into it?
will the system automatic align to the slower speed?

"Technically", it should.  However, Macs are very picky when it comes to RAM.  It's not uncommon even for correctly spec'd RAM to have compatibility problems.  Your best option is to purchase RAM which has been specifically identified as working with a Mac.  You can use the memory configuration tools on Crucial's and Kingston's websites to find compatible modules and then either purchase them there or from any retailer that might carry the same modules.  If you just happen to have some higher speed modules available, there's no harm in trying them out, but I wouldn't go out and purchase them.

  • Mini Mac running Windows 7 won't use more than 2GB of RAM.

I used Bootcamp (newest version) to install Windows 7 Ultimate on my partitioned hard drive on my Mac Mini. The computer ahs 8GB of RAM, but when I open the Task Manager in Windows, I can only see that 2BG of RAM is being used. How can I get it so that I can use all 8GB of RAM on Windows 7? Is there any possibility that I could do it without having to reinstall Windows?
All I would like to know is how I can get Windows 7 to use all 8GB of RAM. I did install the x86 version.
    Thannk you.
Quick edit: I can see that the task manager sees that 8GB are installed, but it also says that there is 2GB total. The OS is only being run with the 2GB and not the 8 that are being detected.

Install the 64 bit version of Windows.

  • Can I use a Single Channel 8GB RAM in late-2009 17" 2.8 Core 2 Duo

    Hi guys.
I've been beginning to run into the problems with the RAM slots on the logic board, where only one slot will work instead of both.
I upgraded to 8GB of RAM from the 4GB setup a while back and only began having the problem within the last year or so, on and off. I've tried using different 2x4GB sticks, from Crucial and Mushkin and the effect is the same.
Logical deduction makes me think it's the familiar issue with the RAM slots on the logic board.
I really don't want to spend the $ for a logic board replacement, so will a single stick 8GB work on my MBP? I need the 8GB because I do a lot of photo editing and multi-tasking on the go.
And while there is no single 8GB stick rated at PC3 8500, I read that as long as the memory sticks have the same number of pins (204) and the clocking speed is at the minimum rating (1066), any stick faster will automatically reclock itself to work with said slot.
I tried it by purchasing this stick:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226266
But when I mounted it, I got the MBP beeping and no boot, even after resetting the SMC and trying it in both slots.
Am I doing something wrong? Can anyone provide any input as to what I could do to get around this temperamental RAM slot issue?
As of now, both slots seem to be providing my 8GB of RAM but I know that when I get up on the go again, and my laptop bag experiences any sudden motion, it's going to knock it back down to 4GB via 1 channel, knocking out the other slot.
    TIA. Any advice appreciated.

    Will it still work?
Not likely.  The problem that you are faced with is that there are no 8 GB modules with those specifications, at least that I am aware of.  4GB is the maximum amount that you will be able to install with only one functioning RAM bay.
I would bring the MBP into an Apple store genius bar and see if the RAM bays can be repaired, what is involved what the cost would be.  These evaluations are FREE regardless of the age of the MBP.

  • Can I use my old Macbook Pro Ram in the New Macbook Pro (late 2008)

I have 2, 2 gig DDR2 sticks of ram in my macbook pro. I wanted to know if they would work in the new macbook pro (late 2008)? I know the new one uses DDR3 - What would be the downside of using DDR2 in a DDR3 macbook? Would the graphics cards work to their potential? Thanks!

No. The DDR2 RAM in your older computer is not the same as the DDR3 RAM used in the new ones. There are significant differences between them not the least of which is pin count.

  • Use more than 2 GB ram for oracle

I have 16 GB ram but I only can use 2 GB of that for oracle database , how can i increase that ???

Don't merely go for increasing the size for Oracle (SGA) Memory. You need to keep collect the usage/statistics of your Oracle SGA, for any contention/or slow performance.
Until and unless users/clients reports that their reports/programs/queries are running slow, then think of increasing memory for Oracle. Moreover, instead of anticipating that the user reports the problem, you from your side need to check the hits of the memory allocated for Oracle.
By the way, you didn't specify your Database Version and OS Details.
If assumed, you are on Oracle 10g, then please take a look at the below Oracle Documentations links.

  • Finder using all of my available RAM

Right after a fresh install of Mac OS X Server on the Mac Mini, my Finder already had this problem. It was fine at first, but if I left it open for a while, it would chew up all of my RAM in about 2 days. I installed every software update after that, and the problem is not fixed. It used 3 GB yesterday because I accidentally left it open. Currently, I've been leaving it closed and using AFP to move files. Is this a common issue with a fix?
P.S. I'm not going to reinstall the OS. Finder isn't worth enough for me to do that again, especially because the Mini does not have a DVD drive.

When you say "left it open" are you referring to a finder window?  Closing the window does not close finder.
Make sure you have ample freespace on your hard drive
running permission checks and hard drive tests (using Disk Utility) might help.
You can also put the system in target disk mode and boot off of it from another machine, in case there is some hardware issue.  this will rule most things out except the hard drive.
I also use onyx and other utilities found at http://www.titanium.free.fr/ to help clean up caches and tweaks to osx.  use at your own risk.
if this has not resolved the problem, then you may be a victim of a corrupt spotlight index.
I had an issue not quite like this but close enough to offer as a possible solution.
Here's how you fix a corrupt spotlight index:
    1. Open system preferences
    2. open spotlight (top right)
    3. click on privacy tab
    4. click and drag your hard drive into the window (if you have more than one, perform this one at a time.)
you will leave this in here for at least 10 minutes.  no less. (seems hokey but osx does stuff behind the      scene ie removing existing index)
after your 10 mins at least is up, go back in and remove your HD from the privacy tab, and osx should start rebuilding a new index.
repeat for any additional drives you may have.  I would also close out of system preferences while you are waiting your 10 minutes.

  • Using all 32 GB of RAM?

    Hello!
A friend of mine has bought a dual 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro and expanded it to 32 GB of RAM.
Whatever the reason: After a few days of work he has to reboot the machine because all memory being used and frequent activity on the HDD. My point was that it´s good that Mac OS 10.5.8 uses all available RAM, but he says he has to restart the machine because of some 2 MB large disk writes/reads every now and then. Any thought about what´s happening? Is this normal after a few days of work?
    Regards

I remember reading something on the Developer site after I got my 2008 Mac Pro that the Buffered ram actually slows down the mac based on the configuration of the ram, ram type, make, mix and matching different sized pairs, ect. If I remember right, VRam doesn't used the physical ram, it uses the Hard Drive in a hidden folder named Temp. Did he do a PRam reset recently?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html
PRam stores many settings and after a wile it needs to be reset so that the old settings can be replaced.
Its been my experience that after a lot of hours of video work, and other terrible things I do to this mac, the PRam needs to be reset and I force the periodic daily weekly monthly scripts to run in terminal. I also periodically unplug it to reset the power management. I ran Parallels for a little bit but I didn't like how it allocated memory and CPU usage. I switched to VMware and my Macs been happier.
