FF not the best anymore

I'm a long time user of FF but the last months this browser is quite sucky. Constant updates, when I close tabs they keep "hanging"/take a few seconds to close, and the old problem I once had when going to certain sites (Facebook amongst others) the browser just freezes for a minute or so is back. These problems weren't there the previous versions. Sucks. Which browser does work?? I don't want to use Chrome or Explorer.

Have you tried doing a few things to speed up Firefox?
* [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]]
* [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]
These are the top two issues with Firefox ;) Try out those steps and let me know if it helps. Also, try updating Windows and your Graphics Driver, [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]

  • Nvidia 8800 GT not the best for Aperture use?

I've been reading from barefeats ( http://barefeats.com/harper10.html ) that the 8800 GT is not the best graphics card for Aperture. Actually I don't think they actually tested Aperture, but Motion 3. The Nvidia is a more expensive option than the ATIs, yet it would be worse for Aperture? Has someone specifically benchmarked Aperture 2 (not another pro app, and no synthetic tests of core image) with the 8800 GT against the other cards? Would Apple update Aperture to make it take better advantage of the 8800 GT's strengths (when available in a system)? I hope so. I already got the Nvidia, and am waiting to get a Mac Pro in the summer.

Here's my prelim findings (as posted in another thread). Will come back with more detailed comments after I have a chance to test some more:

I've just put one in my first gen mac pro, too. I can confirm a great deal of improvement over the stock 7300 gt. My prob was when an image had been straightened, cropped etc if I then attempted edge sharpening it was just awful - beachballs in abundance, crappy panning, slower than Capture NX. Now, though, it is fast and pleasant to use. That's the good news. The bad news is either:
    1. Apple put such a puny graphics card in a Mac Pro (sic) in the first place (although it copes with everything except its own Pro photo software)
    2. Apple wrote such idiosyncratic software (leaning on the on-graphics card memory so much) that meant Mac Pro (sic) machines hardly more than a year old couldn't cope without a new graphics card when running Apple's own pro photo software. That and the 7300 is still on the "recommended" list of cards for running Aperture 2.
    Ho and, indeed, hum.
    Cheers

    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTunes and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note: Data will be lost

  • NOT the best iPod

Jobs says it's the best iPod Apple ever made. Then why won't it hold the music without needing to keep all my music on my computer? I'm supposed to always keep the cd's I want on my iPhone on my computer or else they will be deleted from my iPhone when I sync them. I don't want to keep music on my computer. I spent $400 for something called an iPod so I could free my computer from holding music. I need my computer space for work not music. So if I want to add a new CD to my iPhone I have to keep my computer full of music or it will drop from my phone. This is ridiculous.
    Agree...disagree??

Clearly you are just looking to be flamebait, and are new to intelligent design. Let me explain a few things that should help clear you up
    1. iPod is designed to SYNC music to your iTunes library. Sync is not the same as dump. Would you really trust a portable device to hold your purchased music with no backup? That is insanity!
    2. Every iPod works in this fashion. By Design.
    3. yes, The Flash memory on the iPhone and iPod Nano is much more reliable that the magnetic media (hard drive) based iPods, BUT it's still a mobile device. What you drop it in the toilet, lose your phone, or it breaks.. what happens to your music??
    4. Backup, backup backup. by having your music on your iPhone/iPod AND your computer you have two copies of it. One goes down, you have the other to restore from (with a little hackery to get all your music out of an iPod/iPhone). Also recommend keeping another copy just in case, especially for music purchased from iTunes music store - you can't download it again if you lose it!
    5. It is possible to manually dump music from your computer to an iPod/iPhone.. you just need to read the dialog boxes and change your settings. But don't do it! for all of the reasons above, you'll lose your music!

  • BT Infinity 2 - Not the best speed? High Ping.

I hope someone can be of help?
I originally bought fibre last year, and had a massive drop off in speed, ending up at around 8- 11mb download. After some back and forth with the good chaps (and chappessess) in India, an engineer was duly dispatched before Christmas, who told me the original installation hadn't been the best. Anyway, he did some work, told me I should be getting around 52-55mb, which should settle and go stable over the next few days...
I am now on around 32mb download, and 10mb upload, with a ping of between 42-47ms. Having run the speed tester at http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/ADSLChecker.TelephoneNumberOutput, it appears that I am getting the speeds that are shown in the low column of the impacted line (assuming impacted is used as no line is perfect?).
If I then go to the BT website to buy a package, and run an estimate on what I could get against my phone number, they quote 53-70mb down, and 15-20mb up.
As the crows fly I am around 800m from the exchange, but obviously the line will be longer than this.  The question is, is this drop off normal, as it appears that the line has settled on the lowest attainable speed possible, or am I just very unlucky and have a totally 'impacted' line between me and the cabinet?

When you use the BT checker it would appear that it always quotes the Range A speeds rather than showing the Range B to Range A speeds which would be a fairer estimate because there is no way of telling which Range your line is on until you get broadband. If that was to happen at least you would know the worst as well as the best speed possible on your line.
If you are on an impacted line you could try and get BT to have a look at it to see if there is anyway of improving it but I suspect that they will use the "you're within estimate" get out clause. When they use that estimate it always seems to be the Range B estimate they use and not the one you were quoted when you signed up.
If you have a look at this graph you will see the expected speeds over distance for Infinity, which is VDSL2 which puts your speed at 800mtrs about 20Mbps.

  • Desktop Project Warnings window not the best help tool

The Desktop Project Warnings window is saying that I need to provide an audio clip but not showing where. Is there a better way to see what's needed?
So is there a log file window or something like that where I can trace the problem?
    Thanks,
    Claes

In looking over the help, you are correct that the description of ad types fails to specify that Desktop means iTunes Radio. The inverse, however, is well-documented:
Create an ad for iTunes Radio on the desktop
I would strongly recommend you click the "Send feedback" link on the help page to let Apple know that the help text should be clarified.
Regarding the learning curve, have you watched the iAd Producer presentations from WWDC 2013? They were very helpful to me:

  • Macbook pro not the same anymore!  Please help!

My laptop was lagging so I did a reboot which left the laptop on the apple screen and would not proceed.  Did the disk utility repair and then the software install.  Software update never finished.  Now iphoto doesnt work and the laptop is extremely slow.  any ideas anyone?  Could this be sotware?  or more of a hardware issue?
    Thanks!

From where?  Desk top or from the disc that came with your computer?

  • Sync to one, but not the other anymore.

I got a new 4g touch and had no problems syncing it and updating it in itune when I first got it. Now itune doesn't recognize it. I attached my 3g nano and itune sync it normally with no problems. The only thing that has change is this I installed Snow Leopard and updated it to 10.6.5 through the "software update". Would this have caused the problem, or is there something else that I am missing? I have restarted and reset the touch with no luck.

  • Video issues - Ipod was not the best choice

Ive been really ticked off recently. I wanted a mp3 player that could easily transfer data between a mac and pc. The sales guy told me that an ipod would be great and i liked the idea of the portable video. But now i wish i handt gone with it.
Ive encountered a couple of problems... mainly my battery. I find it hard to really understand iTunes and the like. I had no idea what was going on when i hooked my PC formatted Ipod to the Mac at school. I couldnt acsess anything and the entire time it had "do not disconnect" after i had stated that i did not want to erase my current library. I finally foudn a soloution, after searching the site which has extremly poor tutorials i belive. Though i will have to see if this works tommorow.
My main issue is the video. Yes i know i have to use stupid quicktime but even then it will nto reconize my video formatts. Im trying to use this 'videora' but wonder if its even worth it. I keep trying to acsess quicktime but the program keeps failing on me. I was under the false impressiont hat it would be as easy as a drag and click to add any sort of file to the ipod. But after reading all the rants and threats on here, ive realised ive made a terrible investment.
Apple failed us. Why couldnt they just give it other formatt supports? Instead of tricking us into installing numerous amounts of software to get it to work properlly. I thought apple's software was meant to work smoothly on windows.
    My question is:
    1. How do i get my video files to work? They are VOB files, dvd files, and quicktime will not reconize this.
    2. Whats apple going to do about these problems? I didnt pay $450 for dodgy hardware/software. Expecially if i knew i had to dish out more money to get it to run properly.

    Try here for VOB files:
    http://arstechnica.com/guides/tweaks/ipod-video.ars/5
Also consider VirtualDub for some conversion.
I use Quicktime Pro for conversion. HOmebrew plugins are available for unsupported file types.

  • Since I updated to mozilla 4 my internet continually freezes and I have to force it to quit. I tried taking it back to the previous version, but it is not the same anymore

I am using an earlier version now only because there were so many problems with version 4. I wish I had not upgraded in the first place as where I used to like it the most I now find it exasperating and go to Google or safari after having to quit 3 or 4 times

  • What's the best way to give a user the option of stopping a vi or rerunning it? I wrote something that works but I imagine it's not the best way to do it.

I have a VI that runs a stepper motor then stops. I wanted the operator to have the option of rerunning the VI or stopping it completely. To do this I added a while loop around the entire VI.I have an example VI showing how I accomplished this, but I'm sure there's a more efficient approach. Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

There is almost never a good reason to use the Stop Sign Abort Execution function.
Your while loop is fine.  What you really want to do is make a state machine that has at least 2 states. 1.  Running the test.  2. Idle, waiting for the user to hit a run button again, or hitting an End program button.

  • Youtube & Safari, not the best match

Has anyone found a better youtube experience with another browser other than Safari? I visit youtube alot & notice about 1 out of every 3 video's hangs & then I get the beachball & no amount of time will let it correct itself I need to force quit safari evertime! Is Firefox better? Or is there something I can do to Safari to help?

    Hi ibroker,
Flash is a buggy CPU hog!
    Try [ClickToFlash|http://rentzsch.github.com/clicktoflash> (Flash-blocking plug-in for Safari)
After installing ClickToFlash, Safari has a ClickToFlash menu located at (Safari --> ClickToFlash), near the "Preferences..." menu item. This gives access to ClickToFlash's settings window and a few other features. Make sure to visit a page that has Flash on it to get this menu (on every start of Safari!).
There set ClickToFlash to use Quicktime for YouTube videos. On my Mac a YouTube video, that takes 35% CPU played with flash, only takes 7% played with QuickTime…
    Or try the Bert86 way: http://www.youtube.com/html5 I http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2010/01/introducing-youtube-html5-supported.h tml
    Same for Vimeo: http://www.Vimeo.com/blog:268
    For Flash:
    Download uninstaller : http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
    Download installer: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
    -quit all apps
    -run uninstaller
    -run installer
-repair permissions (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility) as Adobe always sets them wrong
    Test: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/
