FF4 awesome bar suggestions reset on launch - lost my old suggestions

I upgraded to FF4 last week and have my privacy set to "Never remember history". There are several sites that I visit on a regular basis (at least twice a day); my banking sites and my email accounts. Before I upgraded I used to be able to just type the first two or three letters of each site and the awesome bar would provide the site as the first suggestion. Now, however, I have to type almost the entire site address or bookmark name in order for it to show up as a suggestion, and by then it is usually the only suggestion available. I have tried tweaking the places.frecency.(stuff)Bonus in the about:config, I have tried limiting suggestions to only bookmarks, but I am still getting the same behavior. This is getting to be a bit irritating as I have grown accustomed to only having to type a couple of letters to get my site up. How do I force certain suggestions to be ranked higher so that I can regain the functionality I have grown to love?

Is that the only option?
Why would I have suggesed it if there were a simpler option that you didn't aready try without success?
I'm afraid I will lose even more information.
Did you read the support article I linked for you - specifically the part about backing up and restoring the backup?

No; you need to contact Apple to get the questions reset. Click here, phone them, and ask for the Account Security team, or fill out and submit this form.

  • Awesome Bar: auto-complete suggestion does not remember port number from URL

I visit URLs with non-standard ports all the time such as http://localhost:8080.
When I start typing "localhost" into the address bar, the Awesome Bar suggests only "http://localhost" - i.e. WITHOUT the port 8080 - instead of suggesting the full URL including the port.
I never visit "localhost" without port 8080 so that entry should not even be in my history at all.
The Awesome Bar should always remember port numbers when making suggestions.

Unfortunately that doesn't work. Even with the URL bookmarked, typing "local" to begin the autocomplete still results in the URL being auto-completed without a port number.
Typing the name of the bookmark itself results in no auto-complete at all, meaning you still have to press the down arrow before hitting "return" to get to the correct URL. So you're back at square one.

  • How do I CLEAR the results from that damnable Awesome Bar?

I cannot find a way to clear the results that build up in the "Awesome Bar".

When you clear the history, the awesome bar suggestions should be cleared the next time the cache is refreshed (within a minute, or possibly the next time you start typing in the location bar). The delay is caused by a bug in Firefox: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=567121
This bug is already fixed in our nightly development builds, and the fix will be included in an upcoming release.

  • I recently downloaded a program and have now lost Firefox's "awesome bar" which has been replaced by the program's own search bar. How can I restore the "awesome bar" and get rid of the other search bar?

I recently downloaded Bearshare.com which then overrode my Firefox "awesome bar". Now when I enter a search item in the search box at the upper right of my screen, I'm automatically shunted to this new search bar where I have to re-enter my search item and click return before it will begin a search. Previously, the Firefox "awesome bar" opened automatically together with my home page and I had the choice of searching using it or the default search box at the upper right of my screen. I 'uninstalled' Bearshare but it now continues to come up when I search using the right hand top search box , forcing me to use it instead of the search box at the upper right of my screen. How do I get rid of it completely so that only the "awesome bar" appears as an extra tab when I open Firefox browser?

    First, some clarification:
    * The location bar (often called the "awesome bar") is the larger bar on the left that shows you the address of the page you are currently viewing. As you type in the location bar it searches your history and bookmarks for matches.
    * The search bar is the smaller one on the right. It typically displays an icon of whichever search engine is currently selected and may display search suggestions as you type in it.
It sounds like you are referring to the search bar rather than the location bar. You can change search engines for the search bar by clicking on the icon on the left edge of the search bar and choosing a different one. You can also choose "Manage Search Engines" to remove ones you aren't interested in using.
It also sounds like Bearshare might have changed your homepage in Firefox. To restore that you will need to open the preferences menu (click Tools > Preferences), go to the General tab (first on the top left), and click "Restore to Default".

  • How can I get the awesome bar back. In v. 31 I have lost it and my search box has no search engines. I did use the classic restorer back a few versions, but I d

This might be a duplicate-I neglected to click submit-so am trying again.
Since I upgraded to v. 31, my location bar makes me type the address in exactly, or else it says not a valid address. I guess somewhere the awesome bar got lost. Also, my search box does not have any search engines listed at all. Back around v. 29 I added the classic theme restorer addon, but did not think that would have affected the location and search bars as it upgraded. Any help you can give me will really be appreciated. I have worked on this for days. At one, time the location bar was gone completely.
    Thanks in advance!

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
*Download the full Firefox installer and save the file to the desktop<br>https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

  • The awesome bar is suggesting history

I changed my settings so that the awesome bar only suggests my bookmarks. However, it still is suggesting history (and items that are not in my bookmarks). I've deleted my history multiple times, but websites that I have only visited once are being autocompleted when I type one letter into the awesome bar.

Hello ngmarshall, probably you have corrupt or damaged prefs.js file, see : [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved#Corrupt_or_damaged_prefs.js_file Preferences not saved - Corrupt or damaged prefs.js file] .
    thank you

  • I have lost the awesome bar and other things I requested. Where has it gone?

I had an orange tab on the upper left of my screen that I clicked and could get my awesome bar, bookmarks, cut, paste, print buttons and google. They have all disappeared and I cannot go back, there is no back button, nothing. I upgraded just now to Firefox 5 but it made no difference: the orange tab had gone. How do I get the orange tab back and all the other things?

Click view, toolbars and uncheck menu bar. The menu bar will disappear and the orange tab will appear. If you want the menu bar back, click the orange firefox tab, go to options and check the menu bar and it will reappear.

  • I am having a strange problem with the awesome bar

The awesome bar/location bar is no longer as awesome as it used to be. When I start typing in an address it seems like it no longer checks through my history and gives a list of possible matches but just gives the stem of an address. For example, if I type in 'goo' it will complete this to 'google.com' if I then append this with an '/a' it will complete this to 'google.com/analytics' but that's as good as it gets, as I say, no list from the history or bookmarks.
I've checked the options and also about:config and all the settings are as they should be, as far as I can tell (and I certainly hadn't changed any of them when it started misbehaving). I've also disabled all extensions and plug-ins.
It's driving my slightly bonkers because I quite often use sites with long addresses and can't remember each of the components of each address. I'd switch to using Chrome but I also use Firebug a fair bit so don't really want to do this.

Hi cowtan, <br/>Sorry you are having problems with the awesome bar.
I imagine the new behaviour may be reversed by changing some pref but I have not looked that up.
Regardless of the new behaviour you seem to have some fault as my awesomebar still gives bookmarked items.
As a troubleshooting step try adding an asterisk in the awesomebar (as first character or anywhere) that should then filter the results in the dropdown list to bookmarked only items, does that work ?
    * see [[Search your bookmarks, history and tabs with the Awesome Bar#w_changing-results-on-the-fly]]_changing-results-on-the-fly
You possibly have some extension interfering with the awesome bar, try Firefox in safe mode (but do NOT* at this stage try the Reset Firefox option)
<nowiki>*</nowiki>'''edit''' - personal opinion, if a user; such as you; is knowledgeable enough to use ''about.config'' the easy solution of ''FirefoxReset ''is probably not the best route, as it can have unwanted side effects that are avoidable.
    * [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
Do your bookmarked items appear in safe mode ?
<u>Try a new Profile.</u><br/>The best method for troubleshooting this will be to set up a new Firefox profile, you can then: experiment, troubleshoot, alter settings or extensions installed in that profile without changing and potentially damaging your current profile.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager#Creating_a_new_profile
I suggest to prevent unexpected problems you
    * use a sensible name such as test 2012 for the profile name
    * ensure an empty folder is used & do not then rename or delete the new profile (instead add or delete shortcuts to it)
    * also see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_multiple_profiles_-_Firefox

  • The "Awesome Bar" is not working. It does not recall anything from the Bookmarks

Just updated to new Firefox. In the past, when I would start to type a site in the address bar firefox would complete it as it was already in my bookmarks. But now it does not do anything. It just sits there waiting for me to complete the address. I could start to type Netf and it automatically finish Netflix.com
Why is this happening. Also, for the first couple days of the new version I had to go back into Tools, Options and reset things at least 3 or 4 times before they would finally stay the way I wanted them.
I would tell it Never Remember History and after while I would look and it would say, Remember History. I wanted a Blank Start page, and it kept changing it. It's okay now but the Awesome Bar is not working at all.

Do your bookmarks show up in the auto-suggest drop-down list?
''If not:'' Under Options > Privacy, in the bottom section, does it still show that Firefox should suggest Bookmarks in the Location bar?
If auto-suggest works but the autofill isn't happening, you could double-check that it has not been disabled here:
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''autof''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) If the '''browser.urlbar.autoFill''' preference is bold and "user set" to false, double-click it to switch its value back to the default value of true. That should work in new tabs.
It's it already true, hmm, I wonder whether this is a private browsing issue? (I didn't test with automatic private browsing.)

  • I keep getting "Invalid URL" notices...is the Awesome Bar gone in Firefox 4?

Just upgraded to FF4 from FF3.6.16. Tried typing keywords into the Awesome Bar expecting to get redirected, but instead all I get is a bevy of "Invalid URL" notices.
Is the Awesome Bar gone in FF4? This is a serious inconvenience and I don't want to ditch FF for Chrome but I might if this is so.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
You can reset the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone pref via the right-click context menu to the default on the about:config page and close and restart Firefox to restore the about:home page to its default.
    * Open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location bar
    * Type in the Filter bar: mstone
    * Right-click the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone line and select: Reset
    * Close and restart Firefox

  • How do I get more tagged/bookmarked results to show up in awesome bar? Currently it will only show 4.

When I type a word into the address/url/awesome bar that is a word I know I have used as a tag on several bookmarked pages, only 4 of the results in the drop down are bookmarked pages. The rest of the pages in the drop down are other pages suggested from the web. Because only 4 of the results are pages I've tagged, the page I want (and have tagged) often doesn't show up. Is there a setting I can change to make it show more tagged results? Or is there a way after I get the original results to have it add additional tagged/bookmarked items?

That can be a problem with the Fastestfox extension.
    See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
In the FastestFox Options, uncheck "Enhance Awesomebar"

  • Firefox 4 does not search from Location Bar (Awesome Bar)

I have searched the knowledge base, and not found anything exactly like my problem. A similar question, '''[https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/815325 Url Keyword guessing does not work]''' is close... but only close. Link below.
I was previously able to type some keywords into the Location (Awesome) Bar, and it would either jump to an appropriate page, or come up with a Google Search page of possible sites.
I have upgraded to FF4, and while I can successfully conduct searches from the dedicated Search Bar, typing keywords into the Location Bar brings this problem. I have used "Mozilla Foundation" as my search keys:
    '''Firefox can't find the file at jar:file:///C:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/omni.jar!/chrome/en-US/locale/browser-region/region.propertiesmozilla+foundation.'''
The portion '''file:///C:/Program''' appears blue as if it is a link, but clicking on it, nothing happens. I have attempted multiple search keys, and nothing changes.
I have attempted to use the about:config | keyword.enabled to turn it off, then back on, and it doesn't seem to have worked. I really can't decipher anything about the message that I do get (above). This may or may not matter, but I was surprised to find that my existing Add-On, "Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.2.1" is no longer compatible, and thus not functioning.
Thank you very much for helping.

You can modify the pref <b>keyword.URL</b> on the <b>about:config</b> page to use Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" or Google's "Browse By Name".
    * Google "I'm Feeling Lucky": http://www.google.com/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=
    * Google "Browse by Name": http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=
