FFox advises me of needed update. I start the update, but it tells me that Nuance PDF Converter is incompatible, and it will be disabled, until further notice. I need that program working, and cannot allow it to be disabled until some unknown future date.
How can I update without disabling the program?

Check with Nuance for an updated Firefox add-on or try using the ACR to override "compatibility" with the existing add-on.

Did you update to iPhoto 9.6?
And the photos vanished after you upgraded the iPhoto Library?
Did iPhoto crash during the upgrade?
Where is your iPhoto Library stored? Is it on your system drive in your Pictures folder or do you keep the iPhoto library on an external disk?
If the iPhoto Library is on your system drive in your Pictures folder, select the iPhoto Library in the Finder, ctrl-click or right-click it and select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu. A Finder window will open, showing you, what is there inside your iPhoto Library.
Do you see folders "Masters" and "Old Masters"? If there is a folder "Old Masters", look inside. Are there any photos inside?

I would like to install the latest update for Firefox, but it tells me that my Nuance PDF Converter will be disabled. Any chance this will be resolved soon?

I use Nuance PDF Converter Professional instead of Adobe. When I click the Update button, another window comes up to tell me this program will be disabled.

So you have made a current backup of this (and all other important files) before doing anything else, correct?
After you make a complete backup, just download and install the latest iTunes.
This will do nothing to your iTunes library or media (the entire /My Music/iTunes/ folder).

Why don't you use the option "Get a Free Apple ID" to create a new iCloud account with a free @icloud.com email address for all the iCloud service like Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes Storage & Backup etc.?
This would be the easiest way.

If the installation didn't finish, maybe OS X 10.8.3 was installed partially, and it doesn't show up because the updater already updated the OS X version to 10.8.3, although it doesn't mean that everything was installed and updated. My MacBook Air was put on sleep mode and a couple of hours later I attempted to turn it on and no response. I called apple support and went through the process to try to power it back on and it would not turn on . Nothing would show on the screen and I heard nothing coming from my MacBook Air .

Well on the Air models there really isn't a traditional hard drive, it is a SSD/Flash drive that is integral to the system and can't really be removed or connected to another Mac for retrieving of files. So yes if you take it in and they have to replace the Logic board, The Hart Of the System, then more then likely all your files will be gone.
That is one reason Apple includes Time Machine for Backing Up the system including your files. If you never used Time Machione then eventually, At Some Point In Time, you will Lose all your data. That is a fact of all computers.

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor. The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow. It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them. You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version). Personal preferences showing here.
