Fglrx on laptop with A8-4500M, Radeon HD7640G + HD7670M hybrid graphic

Good afternoon!
I have a laptop with the graphics cards mentioned in the subject line. Do you guys and gals know if they will work with Arch and if they do, will it require anything extra apart from the driver installation?
I've heard some people had a hard time getting hybrid graphics to work under linux and thought I'd ask about your opinions and experience before trying it out myself.
Thanks in advance.
Krutig

I have dual ATI cards. Open source has inferior power management for my dual cards, even when using vga_switcheroo. Having great experience with fglrx both battery-life wise and performance wise.
radeon
Battery: 2:30 hrs
Performance: ran well, but choppy when playing Minecraft.
fglrx
Battery: 4:30 hrs
Performance: working well all round, plays Minecraft without choppyness. Probably due to boasted improved 3d performance.
Some people have said that radeon with "low" power management mode gives them more battery life than fglrx however, so I'd try both and swap if you think you are unhappy with the results of the open source driver.

  • Problem with Intel/ATI Hybrid Graphics

Hi, I Just got a new laptop with the intel(hd4400)/ati(hd8670m) hybrid graphics. I followed exactly this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Hy … ons_So_Far, trying to disable my discrete card, but I did not have vgaswitcheroo under /sys/kernel/debug. Then I did a reboot, it stopped booting after FSCK, no login for me. I did add radeon and i915 to MODULES in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf if that's what you are wondering. I had to chroot with Arch installer and add a basic 20-intel.conf file to be able to boot into my DE.
dmesg output below shows that I had radeon loaded, but still no vgaswitcheroo directory.

You didn't give much information so...
Blacklisting is now done via /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf files
    For example:
    /etc/modprobe.d/disable-radeon.conf would contain
    install radeon /bin/false
You can also write "blacklist radeon" instead but that only prevents loading it automatically on itself while booting. You can still modprobe it and if it is a dependency of an automatically loaded module it will still get loaded. With the install ... /bin/false there is no way to load it.
Also you need to make sure that it is not in the modules array in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf (or that your disable-radeon.conf is in the files array) because the initramfs is its own mini-system that doesn't know about the module configuration otherwise.
but thats the problem ! i need radeon module to start because vgaswitcheroo needs it ! and then trun it off because 'I' dont need it ! anyway i ll give 'bin/false' method a try !

  • Can i use the thunderbolt display with a windows laptop running a AMD Radeon HD 8600M Series

Running windows 7 on a Dell laptop with docking station connecting to thunderbolt display using a mini display port DVI adapter. Windows machine will not detect the display. Any ideas?

No - a Thunderbolt display won't work with a mini-Displayport source, even though the cable will fit.

  • Black screen with Catalyst + MODULE="radeon"

    Hello all,
I've installed the Ati Catalyst drivers, with downgrading my Xorg to 1.10.
I did an aticonfig --initial to generate a xorg.conf, and everything works just fine.
But it goes wrong when I place "radeon" in modules in my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, running a mkinitcpio -p linux after to get a 1366x1024 framebuffer on my virtual consoles.
When I start up my laptop I got a nice virtual console, but when I try to start X, the screen goes black or better said, my screen turns off.
I've also tried uvesafb, but I can't get any higher ress then 1024x768.
I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong here, I'm very new to Arch Linux.
Also, English is not my native language, so bear with me.
    Here's my Xorg.conf

  • AMD/ATI driver problems on a Dell laptop with attached dual monitors

I have a Dell Precision M4800 laptop with a docking station for two additional monitors. I'm shooting for a "big desktop" setup, with my laptop display and the two external monitors forming one large multi-monitor X screen.
When deciding which video driver I'd need, I did the usual:
    $ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Venus XT [Radeon HD 8800M Series]
Which is weird, because the M4800 isn't shipped with 8800M cards. Rather, it's shipped with the AMD FirePro M5100 Mobility Pro (see above link) (also, too many "Pros", AMD...).
I tried the open-source driver, but I couldn't get both my external monitors working in tandem, so I went with catalyst-test, since the non-beta version of the proprietary driver doesn't support the 3.13 kernel (or my alleged 8800M series card, for what it's worth).
My display setup using catalyst-test is still far from ideal. My dual (horizontally adjacent) monitors reset to cloned/mirrored desktops after every reboot, and my machine refuses to show three monitors (dual monitors + laptop display), even with the 2GB of dedicated RAM in my graphics card (see above M4800 link). There's other miscellaneous annoyances as well.
Using hardinfo, I see that my VGA driver thinks it only has 256MB of RAM... which doesn't align with the M4800 specs. Is there a way to change this value?
Just today, I found the catalyst-firepro driver, which I think might be the correct driver for my laptop, at least given the specs on the M4800 from the website.
There's also the option of not using my AMD card at all, and just using the Intel graphics on my laptop. (I had to disable hybrid graphics in my BIOS to get any AMD-specific drivers to work). I'd like to steer away from this, due to the performance loss, but I'd be willing to make the change if the pros outweighed the cons.
As I see it, I have a few options:
AMD/ATI open source driver: Can't seem to get two monitors working, much less three...
catalyst-test: Any two monitors will work together, but not three. Other annoyances.
    catalyst-firepro: Have not tested yet.
Intel open-source driver with AMD card disabled: Have not tested yet.
Can anyone who has had similar issues and/or hardware offer a best course of action which has worked for them? I know we're supposed to avoid "opinion" questions, but I think this is grounded enough in the scientific method to merit some helpful responses.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    clfarron4 wrote:
The last option to me is screaming catalyst-pxp at me, because that's one of the few options if you have integrated graphics and a discrete graphics card.
Let me get this straight: Can you disable the either or both of the Intel/AMD graphics in the BIOS settings? If so, but don't want to disable either, you might want to look at the hybrid graphics section of the wiki.
I know about powerXpress and I think I'd like to avoid it. My experience with hybrid graphics on other Linux distributions is that it's rather unstable or just plain unsupported. If someone can convince me otherwise, given their experience with hybrid graphics on Arch/Linux, I might reconsider.
I'm fairly certain I can enable either of my GPU's separately, but I'll have to check for sure next I reboot my PC.
The last option I mentioned because I thought the Intel drivers might be more robust than the AMD drivers, which have don't have a sterling reputation when it comes to supporting Linux (compared to nVidia anyways, who I know in the past have had good Linux support).

  • I need to install the HP drivers on a laptop with a broken screen in order to get VGA port to work.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
Hewlett Packard Model: 2000 2a20ca Notebook
Oh my god please give me some insight here, it is so hard to find the right answers and I refuse to lose to this technical box that's driving me nuts! So here's the run down:
My screen broke on laptop...fine. It was connected via HDMI to TV and working fine. Until one day it decided to not turn on. I think due to Windows updates and hubby had no patience so kept restarting
I tried to reload Windows on it, not thinking about the drivers, and I'm pretty sure I managed to reload Windows. Now I need the drivers to install chipset, networking etc. (which I have a disc for)
The problem is I cannot see the screen in order to click "install", I can't see the BIOS or the boot sequence. Ugh! And even if I could, the drivers are not installed to use the CD ROM or VGA port.
I can HEAR Windows start up and turn on! Doo-DO-Doo-DO lol the darn thing is working!
The monitor works in my other laptop.
Would/Should the VGA monitor work if I could get it to start in safe mode?
I've heard of a program that can streamline the driver's into a Windows installation disc so everything is installed altogether but how can I reinstall Windows if the drivers aren't loaded for the CD ROM?
Is there a way to get the necessary drivers installed? or is this notebook now garbage?

    1.  The model number is the first thing at the top aside from the OS.
    2.  In my explanation it states:  "I have the drivers on a disk"
    Thanks for all your help!
Getting the drivers is not the problem.  Getting the drivers installed on a laptop with a broken screen...is the problem.
Ok, well sometimes you can't use external monitor to see what is happening in some laptops and the only real way to fix this is to fix the broken screen so you can reformat and resinstall the system again. Those are you only options at this point in time.

The "restore disk" is built into the Mac. See About Recovery.
Need more specifics about what error messages you got while installing Adobe Flash.
However, you can almost avoid Flash altogether by setting YouTube to play the HTML5 version instead.

  • Can't get adobe reader to install on my new laptop with windows 8

I can't get adobe reader to install onto my new laptop with windows 8. Basically what happens is that I start the download from the adobe screen by clicking the yellow download button, then I click run (I've also tried save and run), then I allow the program to make changes to my hard drive, and then finally a blank grey box appears in the in the middle of the screen, titled "adobe reader installer". After this box appears nothing else happens. I've let it sit for at least 30 minutes and still nothing. I've also disabled my pop up blocker, and set the security settings to default as suggested in other posts. Unfortunately this is the only pdf program that works for the site we have to use to write contracts, so I need to get this figured out asap. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

    Try installing from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise

  • How do I connect a mac cinema display to a dell laptop with VGA output?

I need to connect my coworkers Mac Cinema display to his Dell Laptop with VGA out, running Windows 7. We have a VGA to DVi adapter, but it doesn't work. Do we need a different adapter or a driver? Thanks.

DVI-I offered by most computers has support for up to a wider-than-1920 Digital display AND a complete set of VGA signals in it.
If you have an adapter from DVI [computer] to VGA [display] it has no conversion logic in it and should be called a VGA extractor. It will NOT work the other direction.
I think what you need is a better computer or a worser (VGA) display.

  • How do I connect Monitor without HDMI (but DVI-D) to laptop with micro-HDMI?

I have a Samsung NP900x400D-A02US laptop... the video connections are:
    - a micro-HDMI
    - a "monitor port" (which the manual says supports 15 pin D-Sub interface.. or you can connect VGA adapter),
I would like to buy the Dell Ultrasharp u2412M which has 1900x1200 resolution.... BUT it does not have an HDMI port.  It has:
    - a display port
    - VGA input
    - DVI-D with HDCP Input
    - USB ports (but I don't think it's the kind that will allow me to hook up thge monitor to the laptop with USB)
How the heck do I connect the 2 of these... in a way that retains the 1900x1200 resolution?    if I can't find a good way I might have to find another monitor with HDMI....
Thanks so much for your help!   It's a bit frustrating to sort through it all....
    Kathryn

I ended up finding it by item #, because I would have missed it, too.  I wasn't sure if the product image was correct until I saw  this:
Connector on First End: 1 x HDMI (Micro Type D) Male Digital Audio/Video
You got it figured out. Hooks up exactly like you said. HDMI and DVI will result in same picture quality, but as you mentioned, HDMI doesn't carry audio. They are the same, for all intents and purposes, in all other regards.
The DVI cable should have thumbscrews on each end, to help secure it at each end. The Adapter I linked has 'receptors' for the thumb screws, so the connection will be secure. The monitor should have the same 'receptors' for thumb screws. The weakest point of the connection, physically, will be the Micro-HDMI, so just be careful to not put pressure on that connection.

The problem is not the router.. the issue is the vpn has put your computer in a different IP range with a different gateway. When you turn off the vpn the computer returns to local lan and can print.
Some vpn software allows you to set gateway to use local net instead of remote gateway or access to other webistes or local lan.
    Read up the issue.

    Cisco vpn client..

I did not search much.. just grabbed the first article I could find that explains the issue.
The whole point of the vpn is whilst it is connected your computer is NOT part of the Local Lan .. it is part of the Remote LAN via the vpn tunnel.
It is also a security risk using split tunnelling so often it will not be allowed.
Plug the printer directly into the computer via usb or whatever.. Local connection will work.. not local lan.

  • I am trying to switch laptops with my mom, and successfully wiped mine and restored it, but now her password won't allow her into my computer, even though it says it's her account. Is there any way to bypass the password screen?

I am trying to switch laptops with my mom, and successfully wiped mine and restored it, but now the password that she used on her computer isn't working on this computer. Is there any logical reason why the two passwords would be different, if I restored her information from a Time Machine backup? Aditionally, Is there a way to bypass the password page on startup to make a password that my mom knows?

If Disk Warrior does not work you can try the following steps (but they may not work if the disk has a hardware error).
Get the disk (DVD or CD) that came with the system (since you have it listed as 10.6.8).  If it is 10.7 or 10.8 use the Recovery partition to boot from or the USB installer if you have that option.
Insert the disk then power down
HOLDING the C key, power up to boot from the disc.
    Get to Disk Utility
If Disk Utility will now show your hard drive, use DU to REPAIR the disk.
When it completes the Repair process successfully as indicated in DU, do a shut down.  If Repair is not successful then an different course of action is indicated below.
Then HOLDING THE APPLE (or Command key depending on your keyboard) KEY AND THE OPTION KEY AND THE LETTER P AND R KEYS, continue hiolding them until you hear the chime tone for the THIRD time then release all four keys.
If REPAIR is not successful, use the Install disc as a boot and REINSTALL THE OS X OPERATING SYSTEM  DO NOT ERASE THE DISK OR VOLUME FIRST.  REPEAT DO NOT erase the disk or volume before trying to reinstall the OS X operating system.  After re-installing the OS do a software update.  Note that ERASING the disk is NOT required to do an OS re-install.  This allows your existing data and application files to remain.
If that fails then you are down to the "bitter end" of erasing the volume and reinstalling the OS and then all the other software.
If erasing the Volume fails then your last hope is to completely erase the entire hard drive, repartion the disk  and try a re-install.
If that fasils then you may have a defective hard disk.

I had an HP laptop with Itunes on it and kept my library on an external hard drive. I had a 160gb classic Ipod.
My computer died and i am buying a new one (mac is out of budget)
When I get my new computer, obviously I will download Itunes. My Ipod still has all the music on it and the external hard drive is ok.
I don't want to "erase" or lose any information when I sync with a new itunes that is "empty"
What are the steps? After I download Itunes and set the folder location to my external harddrive what is next? Will Itunes recognize my IPOD? Will it load the music/list from my ipd or external into itunes?
    Thanks in advance
