FHD LED 1920x1080 screen failure on direct sun exposure

I adore my T520 15.6" laptop which I purchased at the beginning of 2012 (one year ago).
I upgraded to the FHD 1920 highest resolution screen and was amazed at the vivid colors and crispness.
Unfortunately, it died last week.
I was using it for about 1.5 hours with the morning spring sun shining on it.  The brightness was turned up to 15 (full) otherwise, I was on battery power and 'power savings mode'.
It flashed brieftly twice (barely noticeable), then the backlight went out about a minute later.  Upon reboot, I get a 1 beep (long pause) 2 beep error code.  I can't see anything on the screen anymore (tried flash light but looks like its' totally dead).  I bought another T520 (with 1600x900 resolution) and used it to confirmed that the screen doesn't work on another laptop (while the new screen works on both laptops).
Options?  Cause?
Should I try to swap the inverter out of the lcd?  Can I return just the LCD for warrantee?
Very surprising to see this fail as I thought it was the top-of-the line model.

Turns out that the LCD connector cable was faulty.  Ordered a new one off ebay for $10.  Oops, burnt a fuse on the motherboard too while inspecting the problem.  Had to fix that too.  Works well now!
Guess the key learning was the fact that the screen died so quickly, so points to hardware problem.

  • IMac Screen Failure

    Hey,
I was just wondering if any of you are experiencing screen failures as noted in the link below? If so, is it the aluminum iMacs, or is it the white ones?
    http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/11/30/imac.screen.failure/
    Thanks!!

    Hi autiger
Which iMac do you have and are you having any display issues?
I don't believe it can be jinxed, so I'll do a little bragging here. My 17" Early Core Duo w/Apple Care purchased Jan. 21 2006 is great and has no gradient light/dark, no dead pixels and only a very very small backlight bleed. The sRGB and Adobe RGB (1998) profiles were OK, but the display seamed a little washed out. After more than a few tries, and some good advice from Barbara B and others here I was able to set a new profile that is much richer than any of the factory supplied profiles.
All display manufactures and computer system will have there share of issues, some more that others. I have had more than a few Apple's over the last 20+ years without a single hardware problem. I do have to admit though, that with the all-in-one Intel I bought Apple Care for the first time ever???

  • Sleepiness due to LED backlight screen

I have been using my iPhone 4 for e few months after replacing my old iPhone 3G, and slowly realized that I almost always felt asleep after being exposed to this phone's, my laptop's and desktop's screen only in about several minutes.  After googling around, I came across a recently published medical research result in a physiology journal, which mentioned the evening exposure effect of the LED backlight screen's blue-range short wavelength, http://jap.physiology.org/content/early/2011/03/10/japplphysiol.00165.2011.abstr act
Seeing that I have not heard anyone else has the same problem, I am not completely sure about the correlation, moreover I have a personal specific problem with my melatonin production myself before this problem occured.  However, if this is true, and is the real cause of my sleepiness, has anyone have any opinion, suggestion, or tips to solve this, before someone comes out with a new technology that has no such drawback?
Thank you for anyone's kind attention.

Is there a technical question here regarding your iPhone? It is what it is. Maybe you should try something other than a smartphone.

  • Ipad screen failure

My bought my Ipad 15 months ago (Ipad New) and has recently started a tendency for the screen to suddenly flicker, a bit like an old TV which loses vertical hold only much more rapid. I can turn the device off by holding down the usual power down buttons and things start off again normally but the problem is appearing with increasing frequency. This problem has appeared since I upgraded to the new IOS 7 about 10 days ago. Does anyone have a solution to this other than replacement?

My iPad does this sometimes, have you dropped it before?
Anyway, to get rid of this screen failure you take your iPad case off if you have one on and smack the back of your iPad.
It may seen that you're doing harm but you're actually fixing the glitch!

  • 46 inch led touch screen?

Had this crazy idea the other day that i wanted to turn one of those new thin led screens into a touchscreen to make the ultimate drawing board for photoshop.
I see 46 inch overlays with mac drivers for touchscreen and multi touch, and cheap 46 inch led tv screens that are only an inch tall. So was wondering if anyone had done this yet.
Would lay the tv flat on my angled drafting table and use it for digital painting in photoshop mainly. But it would be nice to have it easily angled back to a wall mount or standing position. Im kinda waiting to see what lion will offer for touchscreen support and will probably just get another mac pro to use it solely for drawing and painting in the home studio.
Of course, a 60 inch lcd wiyh a 42-46 inch touchscreen overlay would be a nice touch so i can paint lazy with my arm resting on the board/monitor.
Any suggestions or noted completed projects of this sort?

  • Kernel Panic & Screen Failures

I've just had two identical failures in one day on two separate Powerbook G4's running Tiger. There was a kernel panic while playing World of Warcraft, and now the computers' screens cannot be activated. I hear the hard drives spinning, but the screen never comes on. The Apple light on the back of the lid does not light up, the sleep light does not work - in fact, the sleep function does not seem to kick in when the lid is closed.
My wife's G4 failed yesterday. She was playing WoW, and she reported several kernel panics. Finally her machine failed to boot correctly at all.
Today, I tried to get it working, employing all the usual methods. I suspected some type of hardware failure. We gave up, she pulled out her old iBook and I played a little WoW on my G4. While simply checking my in-game mail, I got a freeze/kernel panic. I rebooted and the screen stayed blank - precisely the same symptoms as hers.
These are identical 12" Powerbook G4 1.3 GHz models with 867 RAM (factory-installed) in each. We're on an Airport network and in separate rooms, and not plugged into the same power source.
I reset PRAM, reset the Power Manager - no luck.
I get startup chimes (even the second chime for the PRAM reset) and I can hear the drive working. The system is coming up, but the screens and lights are not working for some reason.
I can boot the machines into Target Disk mode and access the hard drives via this iBook, so the system seems intact. On the affected machines, I can press the Volume up/down keys and hear the audio sound cues. Brightness keys have no effect.
It would really seem to be a Power Manager issue, as if no power is reaching the screen or anything in the lid. I reset the Power manager to no avail....
Two screen failures on identical machines under the same circumstances less than 12 hours apart? That's one heck of a coincidence... is anyone aware of a known issue similar to this?
    Powerbook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    No, this is not it.
I too today expienced a Kernel Panic while playing WoW. This only happened before about 4 or 5 freezes within the game which ended up having to be reset with the powerbutton pressed for 10secs.
This happened, as I said, about 4 or 5 times, while connected to external monitor and without. This has only ever happened to me today. I reinstalled WoW. Nothing. I thought it was a temperature overheat so monitored the temperature with iPulse, it heated to 55.3 degrees celcius, one fan kicked in and it crashed.
    I then used GioFX's HD 3d screensaver.
The computer crashed within minutes. What causes these crashes?! It is something to do with the GPU's 3d rendering, but I can't see why it happened today... the only thing I can think of is heat damage, it has been hot the past few days (30 degrees and more ambient temperature) and the laptop's fans have been working full tilt for 2, 3 hours and more while I play.
I am lucky, as my PB is able to be used (as long as no graphics are intense) but it is, in effect broken.
I need a response quickly, my guarantee with the seller is running out soon, do I need a GPU replacement or don't I?
This happened while playing World Of Warcraft 1.11.2(5464) and attached to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse.

  • HT1766 After restoring my iphone 4 to factory settings, then restoring from a recent backup, my phone will reboot but keeps coming back to the "new setup or restore from backup screen". How can I by-pass this screen to go directly to the sync apps/music s

After restoring my iphone 4 to factory settings, then restoring from a recent backup, my phone will reboot but keeps coming back to the "new setup or restore from backup screen". How can I by-pass this screen to go directly to the sync apps/music screen?

Well, it's certainly behaving as though the phone that was backed up was synced to a different iTunes library.
I'm going to throw one more thing out there... Yes, you backed it up to this computer... Was the phone previously set up to sync with this computer? Or was it syncing with a different computer and you just backed it up to this one?
You may have to end up setting it up as a new device and rebuilding the phone by manually re-syncing your data, apps, music, etc. to the phone.
Trying to keep your library on a different drive can be tricky. If iTunes starts up and the library isn't available, it may end up generating a new library ID, meaning that you could easily find yourself in exactly the position you're in now...
I'm curious why there was a need to restore your phone to begin with... It may not have any bearing on this at all, but it could.

  • Macbook Air 11" 2012 screen failure?

Wondering how many others have had problems with screen failure on this particular model?  I purchased march of 2012.  I read elswhere that they were having issues with displays that were not Samsung brand.  I just had to pay to replace at 16 months; 6 months of of which no use.  I am not a high user of machine.  I was really disappointed with the attitude of "oh well you did not buy the extended warranty?"

  • L750: Can I upgrade the 1366x768 screen to a 1920x1080 screen?

My Satellite L750 computer has a 1366x768 screen. It also has a GPU called: Intel HD Graphics 2000 (device id 0106). The max resolution should be 2560x1600 (https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/quick-reference-guide-to-2nd-generation-intel-core-processor-graphics-hd-graphics)  I also note that I can connect an external screen of 1920x1080 with no problem. Now the question: Can I upgrade the 1366x768 screen to a 1920x1080 screen?

That is not true. As a matter of fact I bought such a screen. I wrote about that experience here: http://www.emagnusandersson.com/Upgrade_laptop_screen_to_FHD

  • Screen failure, need some technical information

I have the lenovo y510p sli version. Last night while browsing the internet, the screen suddenly went black (the pc did not shut down, just the screen), and I got a burnt metallic smell. I turned off the laptop and removed the battery. I went to test it after the fact, the pc boots, however the led screen seems to not be backlit now. I can see the lenovo logo slightly if I angle it right, but it as if there is no "backlighting" on the screen. I know for a fact it is not a software issue. I ordered a replacement led screen. My question is whether the entire led controller board is built into the led assembly, or if there is a separate control for the screen that is built into the motherboard that may have caused the failure.

  • Wifi/sound/screen failure

    Hi,
when i booted my comp today (hp dv6 1338ca), after i chose the user to log into, the screen became darker (process occurs after each restart/shutdown/unplug ac and battery and press on the power for 30 sec) before i logged in (in the stage of writing the pass), sound doesnt work (red on the computer panel), wifi doesnt work (even though it is blue on the panel), and win7's start looks different (like the old win versions).
Any idea why / how to fix it?

Welcome to the HP Support Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I saw your post regarding the myriad problem you are having with the dv6. From what you have described it sounds like it might be a hardware issue with the wifi, screen and sound all going. Here is an HP document Testing for Hardware Failures there is a section on using the HP UEFI Diagnostic Tools. Run the System Test – Extensive Test to check practically everything.
I would also advise using the System File Checker tool because these issues could also be connected by a problem in the operating system. This tool will scan your operating system for corruptions.

  • W520 FHD LED TFT 95% Gamut Display and Color Sensor with Pantone Calibration - Review

Last week I have received my (first) new Lenovo W520 Thinkpad, which I decided to buy after lots of research on the internet. I am excited about its computing power and feature richness. Its biggest flaw though is the 1920x1080 LED TFT FHD display, which offers the worst color calibration I have seen in a high-end laptop in the last 10 years.
Its color rendering is highly disappointing as it shows unnatural, oversaturated colors that make the monitor useless for professional photo and video editing purposes. Primary tones glare neon-like in a highly disturbing manner. A red stop sign appears pink and flags in the google image search are displayed in a ridiculous way.
I have tried the following approaches to improve the color rendering.
The built-in color sensor in conjunction with the Pantone calibration software lead to the worst outcome. The white background of Windows Explorer becomes yellowish-greenish.
A better outcome canbe achieved using Windows 7 color management for display calibration, which doesn't avoid the neon colors, but at least white is rendered white.
Using the Nvidia graphic card tools and setting back gamma to 0.76 also helps to a very little degree.
Another solution is a free gamma correction tool called QuickMonitorProfile. This brings back the reds to normal tones with the side effect, that all mid-tones are rendered very pale.
I didn't have a possibility to try high-class external calibration hardware. For me the only solution remains to use a decent external monitor.
I have found the following interesting threads related to this topic:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/How-do-I-lower-the-saturation-on-my-W520-the-r...
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W510-W520-FHD-color-profile-supplied-by-Lenovo...
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Very-happy-with-my-W520/m-p/508841#M18189
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Color sensor is bad joke, it's totally useless. Display gives better results without calibration than calibration with color sensor.
I tested calibration with best possible tools, using Eye One with i1Profiler and results are much better but still it's no way near acceptable for serious photography work. Delta variation is 15-20% (meaning colors are 15-20% off from the correct one, compared to Eizo Coloredge monitors where delta variation is around 2%).
Color sensor is just marketing gimmic for Lenovo. As I have stated on another post, Lenovo needs to get on grip on various BIG problems with their top of the Thinkpad laptops.

  • 2010 27in imac screen failure

my 2010 27 in imac screen has failed, right half of screen grey shadow, dark, i note that this has been a problem in the past, seems that apple ireland are not concerned? any opinions or suggestions? seems that there are major reliability issues with imac
extremely disappointed with product and apple support.

Your are missing the point. Yes, there will be the occasional Mac that has a display failure.. Yes, there will be a number of LCD displays that fail out of the millions of Macs that are assembled with LCD displays. And yes, techs will be seeing those occasional display failures over the wide array of Mac models upon which they work. But there are a number of companies that make LCD displays for Apple with the various Mac models that exist. And sometimes there are different companies making the displays for the same Mac model. These are the random, occasional display failures that can be expected with every computer manufacturer who assembles massive numbers of computers; Apple, Toshiba, Dell, Sony and on and on.
But the point is that the link that I gave you points to a consistent mass failure of displays on the same iMac model, assembled in the same factory, over the same time period with displays from the same manufacturer. That doesn't exist for your iMac. If it did we would see folks posting about it here in large numbers, just as we did back in 2006 and 2007, which we are not.

  • Have a bit of a problem. I'm trying to adjust the resolution on a 2013 27" iMac. Brand new, bought on April 6 2013 from Apple. My friend is 84 years old so, I'm trying to help him adjust the screen so he can see the screen. Any direction would be great.

OK. Have a 84 year old that has a hard time seeing the screen. I've been able to adjust Safari's resolution to accomadate him however, I would like to adjust the screen resolution. When I open preference's / displays, it doesn't have an option to adjust. Is there a way? Maybe thourgh terminal? The computer is the new 27" iMac purchased on April 6, 2013 from Apple. Yes, it is the newest iMac without the disk (DVD) drive. It's running Mountian Lion.
Anyone have some direction on how to solve this enigma???
    bish

The purchase date isn't the important info here.  The actual model of the iMac is and this info is in the model identifier.  For example, I have a late-2012 iMac, model identifier is iMac 13,2.  I will add that there is no 2013 model available.  The most recent at this time is the late-2012 model which I have.
On my display if I select Apple->System Preferences->Displays then press the button "Display" I am presented with a screen which shows Resolution and Scaled as button options.  "Best for built-in display" is the default, however, clicking on "Scaled" brings up the various resolutions that can be used with the display:
From this I can select a display with larger items, but keep in mind that while a larger image can be selected (using a smaller width x height value) it will not be as crisp and sharp as the default.
