  • Fibre Channel SR-IOV support

Hello. I'm trying to find out if ESX supports (or plans to support) SR-IOV for Fibre Channel devices. I found lots of documentation about SR-IOV for networking devices and was able to successfully implement this on ESXi 5.5 using an Emulex OCe15100 adapter running in CNA mode but I'd like to be able to do the same with the FC/FCoE functions. From what I can tell, the adapter itself does support SR-IOV for their FC/FCoE functions but are dependent on ESX to utilize it. Thanks in advance for any help or information you can provide.

  • Whole root zone and fibre channel hba

I have Solaris 10 x86 loaded up on an IBM blade. I've created a whole root zone on it and have installed Symantec NetBackup 6.5.5 and configured it as Media Server. I have an SL8500 tape library in the environment and all the tape drives are fibre channel. Now, in the global zone, I can run fcinfo hba-port or scli and the global zone finds the hba's with no problem. I've added the /dev/cfg/c1 and /dev/cfg/c2 devices to the zone, but running the commands, it cannot find the hba's at all.
Is there something else that I need to do so that the zone can see the hba's, or is this just not possible in a zone?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ed Coates

    Hi.
Check release notes for Netbackup. As i know Media Server is supported anly at Global zones.
You can add access to /dev/rmt/* and give access to tapes, but stiil problem with robot device and this configuration not supported.

  • Windows Server 2008R2 - Adding additional New Fibre Channel Storage will I need to reboot after mpclaim?

I am replacing an MSA 1500 Fibre Channel array with an MSA 2040 on a live system. The new array has been installed physically and connected to the switch fabric.
Both arrays are connected to a common switch fabric. The new array can see all the physical hosts on the SAN, and I have managed to setup MPIO on the least critical box but rebooted that one as I used the -r -i -a options. My question is will I be able to
run mpclaim -n -i -d "HP      MSA 2040 SAN" and not have to reboot afterwards? I have read every piece of documentation and some seem to hint this is possible in 2008 R2 and later but it is not explicitly clear as MS haven't updated
all their docs to detail differences.
I suppose I am after the wisdom of experience.
Since MPIO has already been installed and working for a different array I am hoping any requirement to reboot should not be there?
    Your advice greatly appreciated.
    K

    Hi,
If the server cannot be rebooted at the time the command is run, you could use the -n switch instead. The devices will not be claimed by MPIO until the server reboots.

    Hi,
Was the card previously working in that machine? If it was and you have a G5 tower you could try the card in there. Here is a list of Apple fibre cards and cables which show what's compatible with what. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1769
The card should appear in the System Profiler under Fibre Channel and PCI Cards.

I have teste the service. And it's started. Cluster storage validation report without failure.
    Someone suggest any idea.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
What’s the OS version of your cluster node?
The Microsoft Fibre Channel Platform Registration Service registers the platform with all available Fibre Channel fabrics and maintains the registrations. A fabric is a network topology where devices are connected to each other
through one or more high-efficiency data paths. This service is used in support of storage area networks.
This service is installed by default on Windows Server 2008, and the service startup type is Manual.
You may try hotfix in KB 978790, and check the result.

  • Fibre Channel protocol

    Hi all,
I'm about to develop an app in java using Fibre channel protocaol.
i just wanted to ask if java supports Fibre channel protocols.
N if yes how to implement it in java.

i don't believe that java directly supports it...
but you may have your java app to work over fibre
channel through some lower OSI layer... like TCP/IP or
    something....
what am trying to say is, that it doesn't matter if
you're using fibre or twistpair or smthng else as your
    networks physical layer...
... or are you trying to program fiber network card's
hardware in java?YA i'm gonna program fibre networks card in hardware.
    So how do i proceed

  • Fibre Channel Storage

Im planning on using three mac pros to capture live footage in prores 422hq 1080i.
Can I put a fibre channel in each mac pro and network them to each other...that way when i edit i can just edit from each drive from one mac pro without having to copy them all to one station?

What you're asking is called arbitrated loop.
    You can start from here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbitrated_loop
My preliminary kinda lame and super-fast answer is that you'll be involved in a messy configuration, which isn't gonna worth the cost and time.
If you're gonna use fibre channel, buy a switch a proper SAN and do that. Otherwise it is possible to use Gigabit Ethernet switches, a mac pro as a host and work with ProRes.
If you're gonna use the MacBook pro, absolutely check if the GigE port supports jumbo frames because most new iMacs do not.

  • Xserver Fibre Channel with tape backup issues?

Is this correct, that OS X 10.4.9 and 10.4.10 has a fibre channel issue with external tape drives (as well as SCSI drives)???
And this is to be fixed in 10.4.11? Do we have a time frame when we will see 10.4.11 to fix this major snafu?
I'm going to decide on a different server (in the meantime) and do net backups if this is the case. But what about others that run backup off the server, attached to an Xserve RAID?
BTW, I contacted BRU support with query on their software...I give kudos to them. Their support is spot on!
Message was edited by: Eddie Ski

Retrospect is just hideously, egregiously out of date and I don't think EMC gives a d*mn, at all.
Even pre-Intel, it will happily LOCK up your server while failing to properly time out when trying to talk to a tape library. It's well-known, Retro + Tape Library = h*ll on earth. And the fault lies squarely with Retro because something like Bru and other more expensive software does not have the same issue.
So let's just make sure -not- to judge "SCSI" isues in OS X based on the ungodly-awful behaviour of Retrospect. Might as well do automobile performance tests using only amateur drivers ; )

  • How to using Virtual fibre channel feature in IC 3.5?

Hi ,guys ,i have noticed that microsoft released IC 3.5 to support virtual fibre channel in redhat and centos linux.
    the links are:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn531026.aspx
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/virtualization/archive/2014/01/02/linux-integration-services-3-5-announcement.aspx
in these links above ,notes 2 says:
While using virtual fibre channel devices, ensure that logical unit number 0 (LUN 0) has been populated. If LUN 0 has not been populated, a Linux virtual machine might not be able to mount fibre channel devices natively.
but I do not understand how to ensure logical unit number 0 has been populated ,anyone who have tested such new features please share your expirence , thank you very much.

  • EWDM for 16 Gbps fibre channel rates

Can EWDM with amplifier support fibre channel SAN rates of 16 Gbps?

If you already own cisco EWDM, then check with vendor of 16Gbps SAN that can they provide 16Gbps Optical Transreceiver (SFP) for wavelengths supported by EWDM. As cisco only providing 10G SFP. For optical system it doesnot matter whether it is 1/10/16/40 higher rates can go lesser distance without amplification. Only thing need to check whether the distance you have between EWDM system will be able to support that distance at 16Gbps rate or you need optical amplifier etc. You need to see your power budget.
If you don't have Cisco EWDM then check with SAN 16Gbps vendor what they suggest. As you have many variables to see which will be difficult for you to manage if you are new to DWDM.

  • Fibre Channel Ethernet

Our Apple Rep tells that Apple does not officially support Fibre Channel Ethernet, but that he has heard of customers using it. I am asking for some contact information, but also thought I would try here and inquire if anyone has experiences to relate using the Intel PRO/1000 pf Fibre Channel ethernet card with XServes.
    Thanks!

I would suggest you post this in the XServe forums where you may get some better responses than in this forum.

  • Fibre Channel Simplex Cable - Which end is RX or TX?

    Hello,
I am new to Fibre Channel and I have a question I wonder if someone
    could please help.
If I have a Fibre Channel simplex cable, is there a way to tell which end is
TX and which end is RX? Or would it work if I use either end for TX or RX?
Thank you so so much in advance,
    Akino

    Hi.
Simplex cable don't have RX and TX end. Both ends are the same.
Simplex cable support data transfer to both side at same time, for this you should have special transivers.
    Generaky - it's WDM transivers.
    Regards.

  • HP E2749A VXI fibre channel interface

Currently we are using three HP E2749A fibre channel interface cards. Unfortunately, this product is no longer supported by Agilent.
We record 24 channels of 16bit digitized data (160k samples/sec/channel) to a Ciprico RAID via a fibre controlled arbitrated loop.
I am presently investigating options to refurbish this system. The Controller used in the VXI chassis is a HP E1498A/V743
If you have a product which may fit this use or need information before responding please replay as soon as possible.

National Instruments does not have a fibre channel interface card or a product for that type of application. Good luck in your search!
