Please BT, can I have fibre optic cables in my area. I currently measure my broadband speed in k's NOT mg's  I have a connection speed of 0.56 megs !!!  We have had a period recently of stolen telephone cables,I bet they have been replaced with copper cables. Why couldn't fibre optic cables been installed then ?  I am fed up of being oh so slow !!

Fibre optic cable has just been laid in front of my property to take high speed broadband to the adjacent business park, so when will I be able to access Infinity broadband myself? Postcode is GU35 9JA. I have looked online but no future
connection has been flagged up. Why?

    Hi @philaman
Your cabinet 21 on the BORDON exchange is located here: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.118744,-0.876742,3a,89.7y,204.72h,81.6t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sMcbCrL...
However it looks like your area is in Wave 2 of the Hampshire Superfast Broadband Programme which is estimated to run from 2016-2018
    From http://www.hampshiresuperfastbroadband.com/
"Wave 2. This postcode is included in Wave 2 which will extend superfast broadband coverage to 96% of properties across Hampshire.
Once Wave 1 and Wave 2 have been completed an additional 97,000 premises will have access to superfast broadband, in total more than 570,000 homes and businesses across Hampshire will have access to superfast broadband.
There is a lot of detailed planning to undertake and we expect to publish more news regarding timescales for the rollout of Wave 2 from September 2015.
The programme is committed to seeking additional support to extend coverage even further and address the hardest to reach premises in the remaining 4%. We will publish details regarding these plans as soon as they become available.
Please note: This does not guarantee that every premise in the postcode will be able to access superfast broadband. In some cases, a few properties might be too far away from the new equipment to benefit. - See more at: http://www.hampshiresuperfastbroadband.com/#sthash.KeieUZz0.dpuf

  • Do NI have a PXIe Fibre Optic Power Meter to measure loss (attenuation) and output power from a Fibre Optic cable

Hi, I want to be able to measure the loss in a Fibre Optic cable at a wavelength of 650nm, is there any PXIe cards that can perform this function
    Thanks

    Hi Paul_byrne,
There is no specific NI PXIe card which measures the power output of optical fibres. However the task can be accomplished using an Optical Sensor and a DAQ Board. Here is a white paper which provides an example of the hardware components and setup:
Lowering the Cost of Optical Power Measurements

  • Fibre-Optics ?

    Hi,
I recently switched to fibre optics for broadband in the belief that it was fast ! All the hype etc !
However,I do not find any increase in speed and think it all a bit of a con...it often seems slower than our previous connection...the connection to the local box or junction may well be fibre-optic but the connection from there to my house is the same old tired copper wire connection that has been there possibly since the line first went in to the house.
Surely if my connection is to be called fibre optic, then the actual connection into my house ought to be fibre-optic cable.
Does anyone else feel this ?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Currently only one exchange in the UK is trialling out FTTP/H (Fibre to the Premises/Home) (click Here for details)
So hopefully in the future, then yes you might be able to get FTTP/H, but unfortunatly it's only availabe to a select area and not available to every at the moment.
The Fibre-Optic Broadband Rollout is being managed and done by Openreach for all communication providers/ISPs.
BT Retail (your communication provider/ISP) has nothing to do with the rollout of fibre broadband.
    cheers

  • Fibre Optic rollout/availability

    Hi there,
I have a few questions about the fibre optic rollout in my area, and the local authority on the matter (ConnectingCheshire) has been useless is helping me so far.
The Alderley Edge exchange was upgraded to Fibre Optic a few months ago during "Phase 1 deployment" and looking at the rollout plan found here (http://www.connectingcheshire.org.uk/media/797285/Cheshire-East-map.pdf) my area should be following soon after. We are in the slightly darker orange area south of Alderley Edge and north of Monks Heath Crossroads.
So, Cabinet 1 which we are connected to appears to be fibre enabled but we can't get it yet - I guess the cables haven't been laid but "Phase 2 deployment" should have started by now and we have not heard anything while the map says we should be connected between Phase 1 and 2. Do you guys at Bt know what's going on? Are there construction problems or are we just being left in the dust to twiddle our thumbs with our measly 1mb/s broadband?
I hope you can help explain what is going on.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I can confirm that PCP1 on the Alderley Edge exchange has linked and installed with a FTTC DSLAM cabinet and is accepting order for FTTC.
The FTTC DSLAM cabinet for PCP1 (Alderley Edge exch.) is located adjacent to Yew Tree Cottage, Artists Lane, NETHER ALDERLEY, MACCLESFIELD, SK10 4UA
@Greenlandys, do you know how far away you are from the above location? As if your approx. 1.5/2Km away then you may not be able to get FTTC fibre broadband as you are just too far away from the cabinet.
Are you able to posts the results (including exchange, cabinet info and service table) from http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl
Just remember to edit out your cabinet number before posting.
If you are too far away and that Connecting Cheshire BDUK aren't going to do more work in your area to enable you to get a fast broadband service, then unfortunately there isn't much you can do at the moment.
There is a service (though not currently enabled for your cabinet) where you can get Fibre to the Premises on Demand (FTTPoD) though it could costs you thousands.

  • Fibre Optic Upgrade

BT are installing Fibre Optic cables to some of the transmitters in the Madeley Telford area does any one know why.Is it ready of upgrade to 4g or to improve the capacity of the cell

My lucky day....which is lucky for the OP...I have been given further info on this very specialised subject"When using your phone over the data network, your handset sends data to the local mast. That data then leaves the o2 gsm network and goes onto the Internet. Where 4g is live this is normally through fibre optic cables. This is necessary to provide the high bandwidth required. The data goes to the Internet servers, responses are received, and then data goes back via the fibre optic network to your nearest transmitter to come back to your phone. This all happens in milliseconds.
So as BT are adding fibre optics to your local masts in Telford this will be to increase capacity and if 4g is not there yet will almost certainly be a precursor to its arrival in the coming months"Credit to

  • How difficult/costly is it to install fiber optic cables?

I live in an area that has no underground cables, or fiber optic cables and I've lived with this 1.5 MB DSL connection for about 4 years now.  Yeah, it sucks.  I was curious as to what is the biggest factor when it comes to installing fiber optic cables in an area and how a company determines as to where they are going to be located.  Thanks in advance.

Installing fiber optic cables is not just a "how hard is it?" question.    yes, the business considerations do take into consideration the physical issues (how hard it may be [above ground and below ground]), but there is more:   Can the company get City\county\state PERMITS to do so?  What engineering problems are there? (mountains, existing drainage or other water culverts, etc.?)  and then there is also the business consideration of 'how much uptake will be realized if we install the fiber cable?' (how many users in the neighborhood?)
fiber optic technology (to the premises) is here and will not go away (more like CAN NOT go away), however, until the economy picks back up, it may be cheaper for more people to see how much more can be squeezed out of the existing technologies (DSL & cable) before they want to switch to what may cost more for them.  SO, in your area, the company may not be able to get the permits, maybe just not yet, who knows?   They may also not see customer uptake in your area, yet.
You may not be aware, but Verizon has recently sold-off whole states and partial states-worth of fiber-to-the-premises accounts, in what could have been Business decisions based on profit for stock holders.   -If their investments to install it will not be recouperated within the time limit required by their stock holders, it may not be installed for a while.

  • BT Fibre Optic Query

Hello, we currently have a BT Home-Hub 4 and the fastest download speed up-to-date we've had is just under 1mb/s. We believe this isn't good enough... At the moment we don't have fibre optic installed in the area, and it would be great to hear if there will be a chance of actually getting one installed.... The address of the area we live in is:
    Cypress Gardens
    Longlevens
    Gloucester

    Hi Creature_face
The Fastershire Fibre Broadband Scheme is being rolled out, done and managed by the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire councils in partnership with Openreach so BT Retail (a communication provider/ISP whom operates this forum) does not have much say as to when and if you will be able to get fibre broadband (FTTC or FTTP or equivalent) as that is up-to Openreach, Herefordshire Council and Gloucestershire Council.
Your postcode area is connected to PCP 129 on the GLOUCESTER exchabge, and as already been stated has not yet been upgraded with a FTTC DSLAM cabinet, therefore fibre broadband, such as BT Infinity, is not yet available in your area. Your area is estimated a adsl broadband speed of up to 2mbps.
As part of the Fastershire BDUK fibre broadband programme your postcode area comes under area 4.
The rollout of fibre broadband in this area (Area 4) as part of the Fastershire project is due to start on 30th September 2014.
Fastershire expect the majority of work to finish by 30th September 2015. Further work to ensure all premises have access to faster broadband with a minimum of 2Mbps is expected to be completed by December 2015.

  • HT204400 I get no audio from this device.  All my HDMI ports are in use with the cable box, DVR and receiver .  My digital optical cable is also in use to the receiver.  Is there a solution?

I cannot get audio using this device all my HDMI ports are in use as well as my digital optical cable.  Any solutions?

How exactly is the ATV connected if all HDMI ports are in use?
If connected directly to the TV, then audio is being sent to the TV speakers, not the receiver.

  • Cannot connect to PPPoE?  fibre optic Internet in Japan

    Hi I live in Japan
All the manuals and helplines are in tricky Japanese and I can't find out why I can't connect to the Internet! Help!
I get a message saying "cannot connect to the PPPoE server". It was working fine for a few months but now suddenly I can't connect to Internet . Strange thing is the "hikari Tv" tuner (fibre optic) set top box is working fine and all the channels come via the Internet connected with a cable to the same router box. This makes me suspect it is a problem with the MacBook.
I would appreciate any help although I guess it is an unusual circumstance.

Thanks for your responses people. I have since figured out how to get to the Linksys web admin site, and I also have the wireless connection to my MB up and running.
The remaining problem is that my flatmates lovely old Windows XP laptop (wired only) cannot now connect. I am pretty sure it is not an issue with the router, but her Windows machine is all in German, and my German is ok, but dealing with techie stuff is another matter.
    Any ideas?

  • Trace Fiber Optic Cables

    Hi Folks
How to trace Fiber Optic Cables,I m Working in environment where no Fiber Optic Documentation  and I Don't know how cables are running between fiber patch pannel on the rack on access switch and the fiber backbone .no label to start working and prepare documentation

Are the fibres carrying live traffic?  If they are not live you can trace them with a red light source, its like a pen that has a laser that operates in a visible wavelength, heres one I found which seems to use very bright LEDs:
    http://feedthenetwork.com/cable-and-satellite-tv/visible-light-use-for-fiber-continuity-testing
And this one goes 10km with a laser:
    http://www.dhgate.com/10km-red-light-pen-fiber-optic-test-fault/p-ff8080812b2e44e5012b48263732532d.html
With everything you get what you pay for and cheaper ones will not go as far as the more expensive ones.
With my laser based red light source I see a break in a fibre patch cord and I can also put a gentle bend in the fibre and it will leak out the side of the sheath.
I hope this is obvious but DO NOT look into the end of a connector EVER, you can't see 1310nm or 1550nm but it will give you a very cheap laser eye surgery job and will almost certainly damage them beyond repair.
If the fibres are live you may have to disconnect them to see which port goes down, thats the safest way to do it anyway.

  • Fibre Optic availability

    Heya all,
I live in Boardwalk Place (Poplar exchange) and 4 out of 5 buildings in the block had fibre optic for like a year already, while my building (1 out of 5) still has no fiber optic. It doesnt make sense as all buildings are surrounded by water andthere is no chance on other cabinet or else.
The question is who and how i can contact to try and start an investigation into the issue?
    Thanks in advance
    Dmitry

Poplar does seem to have a bit of a mad setup with cabling routes but if you want us to double check whether your line is EO or not feel free to fill out our contact form (the link to which you can find in my profile under "about me").
These two links might also be useful - I'll add them into my sticky at the top of the Infinity forum later on for a permanent reference:
http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/resident/ (you can fill this out yourself)
http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/landlord/ (you need to give this to the owner of your property/building)

  • Bt infintity available with exisiting fibre optic?...

    Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me, after having lots of problems over the last year with my standard phone line causing internet connections problems with intermittant noise problems..I was wondering if its possible to switch to BT infintity even though as the Doncaster north area isnt yet shown as being available.
The reason why I'm asking is our whole estate was wired for cable up a number of years ago I believe for a Cable & wireless service (which now is currently being used by Virgin Broadband). Would this likely be the same is what is used by BT infintity? are cable and fibre optic the same?
Our house is connected up to the cabinet, and the two internal connection boxes are still in place though disconnected as we went back to BT.
If it was possible to use this connection I would be looking to transfer my broadband and phone service to BT infinity..
Can BT use existing cable or or do they only use infintity with cable they've laid themselves?
My post code is DN5 8NH and the cable cabinet is located about 60 yards away on the street corner if thats any help..
    thanks,
    Darren

    Hi darren.
Sorry, you can only have Infinity with a BT telephone line, connected to a BT Fibre cabinet.
If as you say Doncaster North is not fibre enabled , then unfortunatly Infinity is not available to you.
If you want to post a BT speedtest results and Router stats, then maybe someone on here can suggest something.
Can you try the quiet line test. Dial 17070 then option 2 . The line should be quiet. It is best done with a corded phone if possible.
If only cordless phones are available, then you might hear a slight hum.
If there is any noise, then report a phone fault to 151 . Please do NOT mention broadband.

  • Is Optical cable necessary if you have HDMI?

Just got the new Apple TV. If the HDMI is supplying both Audio and Video, is it really necessary to also hook up the Optical? Thanks in advance.

it entirely depends on your individual setup.
if you are connecting the appletv to an amp via HDMI then no, you don't need to use optical.
if you are connecting appletv direct to your TV via HDMI and you want DD5.1 audio, you would then connect the optical cable to your DD5.1 speakers/amp.
