Field-Dominance automatically 'Upper', how to change?

Hi!
Recently I discovered that the Field Dominance (FD) setting of my sequence/projects is automatically 'Upper'. Also when I capture from VHS, the FD of the clips in my project is always 'Upper'.
But most of the time I want the FD to be 'Lower', because I often use PAL and DV.
I've searched the Preference menu and the FCP User Manual, but I cannot find an option where I can set the FD standard to 'Lower'.
Is there such an option or do I need to change the FD manually every time?

I think so long as everything is the same field dominance and matches to your settings you're okay. The first time I came across the problem was importing DV PAL (lower ) into a sequence that was mostly SP Beta PAL (Upper) and the sequence was set for 8 bit uncompressed PAL (upper). The flickering of the DV PAL footage was only evident on the external monitor, it looked fine on the computer screen and it didn't matter how much I rendered or tried flicker filters it just wouldn't change. The only thing that worked was the Nattress "Field" plug in. It's in Filter Set 1 - http://www.nattress.com/set1.htm

  • If database field increases in size, how to change report to display this increase?

    Hello Everyone,
           I'm working with Oracle Reports 10g and have a report that was already created.  I need to increase the size of a field from 50 to 200 in width to accomadate a database change.  When i click on the field and choose properties, the width value is locked.  How do i change this?
    thank you,
    steven

    Hi,
    Change your properties of horizontal/ vertical elasticity of the frame enclosing that object to Variable instead of fixed... Now try to define the width of your field .. It can be varied now...

    I'm trying to show cumulative sales figures by product but the column height seems locked to count only.  How can I change to show sum.

    my previous reply did work, for some reason you have to restart excel. Copy and past the data as values, then use this data for the map (i had a formula creating the column i wanted to map).

  • Why Would Upper Field Dominance Change The Quality Of My SD So Much?

    I did a shoot in SD and edited it as such of course. The thing is when I was done, all of my slow motion looked echoy (a plague of mine if you're not familiar with my posts) and generally looked a bit lower quality then even SD usually gives. So I freaked out (finally) and found a guy on line that suggested changing the field dominance to Upper and to make sure that I have my Video Processing set to "Fastest Linear". Now this was a guy that has had this posted for a couple of years, so it wasn't like he actually told me this directly.
    Well, it worked. The video looks good, slow motion is nice and smooth. Just for fun, plus the fact that I don't have a clue what I'm doing, I decided to see what it would look like leaving the processing the to Fastest and change the dominance to lower, and behold, the cruddy video plague of mine returned. It seems like everywhere else I look, people say not to do this, but it worked. Why? I do know what the dominance of upper and lower are, I'm just not smart enough to know why it worked and I want to learn this badly. For example, would I do this same dominance for HD?
    Thanks again guys,
    Crayton

    I filmed it in SD on my Sony HDV-AU1 camera. What is killing me is if I choose upper then the footage looks fine, but then what I have done is add some jpeg images that I created in photoshop on a PC. they are simple images of text that say "Round 1" or "Round 2" in between the fights. I have them spin into view using one of the transitions in FCP, but when I get it to dvd, they look horrible, echoy, just like the footage looked like before I changed it to upper field. So as it looks now, I can't have both look good i guess. This doesn't make sense to me!! It is incredibly frustrating especially since I'm out of money and almost out of time on this project (it has to be done by next week). I keep re-doing the project, re-building it, re-setting it in one type of sequence after another and it's not looking good at all. what am I doing wrong?

  • Offline To Online Changes Field Dominance Settings?

    Hi - I have an offline DV PAL sequence that I am taking online to 10-Bit Uncompressed PAL.
    To my understanding PAL is Upper field dominance, and all my sequences and source files in the offline DV project are upper. However when I check the Uncompressed online project, many of the files (subclips especially) are set to Lower.
    My question is this - since it's easy to change fd for clips by just right clicking in the browser, if I just set the incorrect clips' Field Dominance to Upper and make sure the shift fields filter is not enabled, can I be certain there will be no field dominance issues?
    Maybe more importantly - what is the best way to determine if you have any field dominance issues? Is simply watching it on a monitor/television going to be obvious if something is wrong? Any way to check on the computer?
    Thanks everybody,

    Field dominance depends on the format, not the standard (pal,ntsc).
    DV is lower field dominant be it PAL or NTSC, and uncompressed is upper field dominant.
    For true monitoring, you'll need to view your image through an external broadcast monitor... a CRT television should be suitable for monitoring field issues (i believe... i'm sure i'll be corrected if that's wrong).
    The only obvious thing to look for is 'combing'... the lines (fields) that appear around the edges of a subject on the screen, especially when there is a lot of on-screen movement.
    Just out of curiosity... why are you taking a DV sequence into 10-bit uncompressed? Doing graphics etc?

  • HDV to DVD-Change Field Dominance Or Not?

    A search I did recently pointed to this article:
    [http://www.larryjordan.biz/articles/bkhdvconvert.html]
    The author claims that when exporting an HDV sequence from FCP to Compressor, he changed the default field dominance from Upper to Lower, resulting in a better quality DVD, smoother motion, etc.
    There wasn't anything wrong with my HDV exports using the default upper dominance, but I decided to try it, just looking to squeeze out any improvement I could.
    The results were terrible; awfully jerky motion, dot crawl across the top of the image, etc., so I went back to using the default.
    But then I thought, I wonder if the improvement the author saw was because he exported an HDV Quicktime Movie first, then put that into Compressor and switched the field dominance . . .
    I usually export my HDV timeline right out of FCP to best quality DVD in Compressor, without the in between step. Just wondering if anyone else has tried it the way it's mentioned in the article, and if it's made a difference for them.

    Wow, this thread was way back there;
    Anyway, I use a Sony V1U, and shoot 1080i60, and I had been getting acceptable results, but was just looking for a bit more detail.
    After reading the article, I sent a finished project to Compressor both ways; 1st with the default upper field dominance, and then again changing it to lower, as the article recommended. The default upper file looked pretty good, but the 2nd time with it on lower looked terrible; all kinds of motion displacement.
    I've been using the default since, and have not tried it the other way since that first time. When I get time, I'd like to try exporting a QuickTime movie first, then put that into Compressor with the switched lower dominance to see if there's any improvement that way. I usually just export directly to Compressor from the timeline.
    I appreciate the comments, and I'm always interested in any setting changes that might squeeze out some more detail when going from HDV to DVD.

  • Which Field Dominance setting in Compressor?

    Hello,
    Which Field Dominance setting should I choose in Compressor, given that I shot on DV in progressive mode, and have rendered and exported to uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2? (The Field Dominance alternatives in Compressor are: "Top First", "Bottom First", "Progressive", and "Automatic".)
    I am confused by this because in FCP, I believe that the correct Field Dominance setting is "Lower (Even)" (not "Progressive"), since in DV format, images are stored one field after another, even if pairs of fields were captured simultaneously, i.e. even if the camera was used in "progressive mode".
    But precisely because pairs of fields were captured simultaneously when I shot in progressive mode, I suspect that the correct Field Dominance setting in Compressor is "Progressive". But perhaps I'm wrong(?).
    Would someone please enlighten me?
    Thanks.
    Robert

    For 1080i50, you should leave field dominance at Upper. The sequence field dominance (field order is a more accurate term) should be the same as that of the source footage. Stick to that rule and you'll be OK. For progressive sources it's None. For interlaced HD format sources, it's Upper. For SD interlaced sources it's Lower.
    Now, in the case of 1080p25...it's progressive, but it can be carried on a 1080i50 timeline with no ill effects EXCEPT that transitions, moving titles, and perhaps certain other effects will render with the normal interlacing of the sequence format. The fix is to change the sequence field dom setting to None. Hope that makes sense.

  • Field dominance problem?

    Hello:
    When editing DVcam footage into a dv sequence with Livetype graphics, which field dominance (none, upper, lower) should be chosen in seq settings?
    I take it LT graphics should be created with the same FD? Currently, my seq is LOWER fd, as are LT graphics, but this one LT billboard push transition (moves from up to down, revealing incoming shot beneath) strobes and even seems to have the "double strobe" burnt into it. I have a screen snap I could send if someone needed to see the problem.
    Thanks much
    KB

    lower (even) is the correct field dominance for any DV based sequence (excepting HDV)
    i'm assuming you're seeing this strobing on your external TV/Broadcast monitor
    obviously the first thing to do is simpy run a couple of tests yourself. try changing your field dominance to None
    going further, you might try using moving the whole LT compostion up/down a pixel in your FCP sequence ... its been known to help with Text Generator Crawls and Rolls.
    worth a try i should think.
    hope it helps

  • Field Dominance Setting question

    Hi
    Just read an article suggesting setting the field dominance setting to 'none' to reduce the interlace on progressive footage on renders?
    I have checked the FCP manual and it doesn't specify a prefered setting for 1080i50, which I have been filming in.
    Could anyone clarify or suggest pro's and con's of the field dominance settings options?
    thanks

  • How to change the width of a field?

    Hi all,
    I would like to decrease the width of a field on my report.
    But I can't do it in the Property palette. I am not able to change the width property. The width of the database column is varchar2(255). I do not want to decrease the length of the database column, but only the width property of the field.
    Any ideas?
    Regards

    As far as I knows, you can only increase the width of a
    character column. If you wish to decrease it, I would think
    you'd have to drop/delete the whole column and recreate it,
    loosing all your data in the process (unless you create a
    temporary table into which you copy the data first, and then
    copy it back into the "new" column - the oracle db will truncate
    the data automatically).
    SQL Plus is very well suited for the task, but requires you to
    write the appropriate SQL statements yourself. Other tools may
    simplify this for you (I use SQL Plus myself).
    Hope this helps.

  • Uprezzing SD to HD, make output upper field dominant?

    Ok, so I'm uprezzing a SD short film originally shot on DV, interlaced, to HD for a film festival. After the uprez, the resulting file will go onto an HDCAM tape for broadcast at the fest. I want to keep the interlacing as the crappy video look is part of the story.
    So, that being said, I hear all HD is upper field dominant, while my clip settings and and sequence in FCP for the original SD movie are lower field dominant. In compressor, do I want to change the settings so the output file is upper field dominant since it will be HD, or leave it as is to match the source material (lower field)? Furthermore, there are two places to set field dominance in compressor, one under the encoder tab, after pressing the "video settings" button (if interlaced is checked), and another under the frame controls tab. Do I set both to upper/lower field dominance, or is one telling it what the source footage looks like and the other is for the output file? Thanks.

  • Automatic Duck and Field Dominance

    Hello,
    Here I go again with the field dominance issue:
    I am trying to import a sequence from FCP into After Effects using Automatic Duck xml import plug-in. (Highly recommend this for all FCP users who finish in AE!)
    When I import the xml into AE, even if I have assigned FIELD DOMINANCE: NONE to both clips and sequence in FCP5, the footage get interpreted as LOWER FIELDS in AE.
    It makes a huge difference, but I can't figure out how to import the footage into AE so that the footage can be interpreted as frames rather than fields
    Thanks in advance.

    You need to edit or ignore AE's interpretation rules.txt file, it is installed near the After Effects application. The user guide used to explain this, this information must have made its way out of the use guide.
    I recommend you force AE to ignore the interpretation rules file. Rename it with the ¬ character in front of the name (¬ is Option-L), any file or folder whose name starts with ¬ is ignored by AE.

    Yes, you can do something like that. What you would do is create a button for each image and then hide them. When I do this type of thing I place all of the buttons on a template page and then hide the template.
    You can then use JavaScript to copy the icon from any of the hidden buttons to the main button that you've set up to display the image. For example, suppose you set up 10 buttons named b1, b2, b3, ...b10. The code to copy the icon from one of them to the button used to display the image (b0) would be something like this:
    // Get the icon from the b3 button
    var oIcon = getField("b3").buttonGetIcon();
    // Get  reference to the b0 button
    var f = getField("b0");
    // Set the icon of the b0 button to the icon retrieved from the hidden button
    f.buttonSetIcon(oIcon);
    // Show the b0 button
    f.display = display.visible;
    This code would go in the Mouse Up event of the smaller button.
