Fifth Generation (Late 2006) or just Fifth Generation

I just bought a refurbished 60 GB iPod last week (Apple Store), is it a Fifth Generation (Late 2006) or just Fifth Generation. The serial number ends ELSZ9.
I want to know the Tech. Spec. for this one iPod.
Thank you

This reference -http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61688- seems a little confusing. I don't see my serial numbers.
Fifth Generation iPod (Late 2006) (also known as iPod with video)
You can distinguish the Fifth Generation iPod (Late 2006) from the original Fifth Generation iPod by the last three digits of the serial number.
The Fifth Generation iPod (Late 2006) serial number's last three digits will be one of the following: V9K, V9P, V9M, V9R, V9L, V9N, V9Q, V9S, WU9, WUA, WUB, WUC, and X3N. The Fifth Generation U2 Special Edition iPod (30 GB Late 2006) serial number's last three digits are W9G.
Fifth Generation iPod (also known as iPod with video)
The Fifth Generation iPod is a a hard drive-based iPod featuring a large, widescreen color display, a Click Wheel, and the capability of displaying photos and videos. Like iPod nano, it uses USB for syncing and comes in white and black.

  • Ipod Fifth Generation Late 2006

    Dear Apple Forum,
I have a Ipod Fifth Generation Late 2006. Recently I experience an anomalyof this Ipod. I could not remember the latest version of the software in this Ipod. When I plugged into my lappy (OS is Win 7), my lappy could not read the Ipod as an external drive. When I double clicked on the Ipod icon, Win 7 prompts me to format my drive. After consulting my IT personnel of my company, we decide to re-format my Ipod. The settings for formating are as follows:
Storage: 80GB but Win 7 detected 72GB...where did the remaining 8GB go?
File System: exFat (Default) -> there was NTFS available but my IT staff says its ok.
Allocation unit size: 128kilobytes -> there were other values available, from 16kB to 32kB but we chose 128kB. What the ****??!!
After formating, it works find on my laptop with Win 7. But when i got home and connect to my iTunes, iTunes prompts me to restore software. After which it was not able to restore due to limited memory (my guess is the 128kilobyte).
    iTunes version is 10.3.
Now my Ipod cannot start up and it hangs at the initial boot up with the apple logo and a "clicking" sound (sounds like the sound of the harddisk mechanism) over and over and over again.
Now both WIn 7 and my iMac (Leopard) are not able to detect my Ipod. I have attempted the 5 Rs: Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall, Restore but to no avail.
Could someone advise me what I can do to restore my Ipod? Thank you!

it's possible to sync from a selected folder of
photos rather than from iPhoto. there's some
information on how to do that in the following
    document:
iTunes and iPod: Frequently asked questions
    (FAQ) about Photo Sync
Thanks for your reply. I still cannot get to the prompt to sync my photos. I really do believe that I'll have to upgrade from iPhoto 2.0 since the prompt appears "copying photos from iPhoto requires iPhoto 4.03 or later" - all other prompts are greyed out and therefore not selectable. Initially I tried copying photos from my desktop to iPod by dragging a folder of 50 photos ... that is appearing as an iPod cache and shows one folder of Photos and another of thumbnails, but neither of these can be viewed on iPod or computer .... any suggestions as to upgrading my iPhoto to 4.03 at least so I can try to sync photos? I did start out with iTunes 4.7 when I first got my computer in 2004 and have been notified of iTunes updates automatically and iTunes is now at 7.2. Does Apple not support iPhoto in much the same way?

  • 5th generation (late 2006) ipod problems

I have a 5th generation (late 2006) ipod, about a month ago it went into recovery mode. No matter what computer I put it in, usb, cords, everything... it WILL NOT restore. I'm assuming my music is already gone since I have tried so many times. Now what? Also, I have put it into disk mode and regular mode. Nothing works.

Do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but help in troubleshooting.

Unplug any peripherals you have except your keyboard, reboot, and check activity monitor for apps.  Keep running apps to a minimum to find the App causing the issue.

I just bought a used 5th Gen late 2006 iPod. I have a 5th Gen U2 Special Ed. iPod I found in the trash. It's missing the display and battery. Can I swap the cases from one to the other?

    Hello sisjoel,
Are both iPods the 30 GB models? If they are, then yes, you can swap out the cases. However this task can be a bit more difficult than it looks and you risk bricking the used iPod you recently purchased.
I think the best guides on how to swap out the front and back covers can be found on ifixit.com. Here are the two guides that should help you accomplish this task.

  • Late 2006 Macbook fan noise - How much does it cost to replace a noisy fan?

    Hi there,
I have a late 2006 Macbook that has served me well over the last four years or so. Unfortunately, the fan is now making one heck of a racket (almost as soon as you switch the machine on).
I gather this is a relatively common problem with this generation of Macbook and can be fixed by replacing the fan. I'm not proficient enough to do this myself so will likley have to take it to an Apple Store to get it done. I wondered whether anyone else had already done this and if so how much it cost them and how long it took? Any info / tips warmly welcomed.
    Thanks,
    James

I suggest you do a search for MacBook repairs. There are many shops that will do it cheaper than Apple. Most can give a quote on a known repair online.

  • Memory upgrade on iMac (Late 2006)

I want to upgrade the memory on my iMac (Late 2006). My present memory is 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. I am getting that information from the System Profiler. That (one) module is in one Memory Slot, and the other Memory Slot is empty.
    The manual says the following:
+Your iMac comes with at least 1 GB of Double Data Rate 2 (DDR2) Synchronous+
+Dynamic Random Access (SDRAM) memory installed. You can add 1 or 2 gigabyte (GB)+
+memory modules for a maximum of 3 GB of memory. Memory modules must meet the+
    +following specifications:+
+* Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module (SO-DIMM) format+
    +* 667 MHz, PC2-5300, DDR2 compliant (also referred to as DDR2 667)+
    +* Unbuffered and unregistered+
And it also says the following:
+Your iMac has a top slot and a bottom memory slot. You can add a memory module to+
+the bottom slot and remove the memory module in the top slot to replace the+
+installed memory. You can add a 1 GB or 2 GB memory module for a maximum of 3 GB+
    +of memory.+
I guess I should just do as Apple suggests and add a 2GB module to the other memory slot, to maximize the total memory in the computer at 3GB. But does anybody have any alternative experiences or suggestions? Should I perhaps add another 1GB module to the other Memory Slot so that they are both equal? Has anybody tried adding 2GB to each Memory Slot? What happens? It seems odd or unbalanced to have a 1GB module and a 2GB module as Apple suggests. Any opinions from people experienced in this would be welcome, and I thank you in advance.

    Hi rosalarose
To check how much memory you have and your memory usage go to: Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and select System Memory.
Your problem sounds more like a Software problem with Safari than a Hardware issue with the Memory. Instead of piggybacking on someone else's thread you should post a New Topic of your own here or in the Safari section of the Forum with a more detailed explanation of your problem.

  • IMac late 2006 no wifi detected

I am new to the Mac world other than the basics and I came across a late 2006 20" iMac last week. After installing the only OS I had which is Snow Leopard, I found everything works great on this system except the original wifi card it came with which is after researching a bcm94321 card. Airport utility does not detect it and I have a few other items Ive tried installing but airport utility doesnt detect them either... Any help would be appreciated as I am clueless on how to even troubleshoot this other than just replacing the card. Thanks in advance.

  • IMac (Late 2006) fan speed is 4600 rpm and nothing will change it

I just brought my iMac 24" 2.16GHz Late 2006 back from the Apple Store today and the ODD fan is running at 4600 rpm!!! The noise it generates is way too loud. It is comparable to the wind tunnel G4 I replaced. Any thoughts on how to lower the fan speed?
I took the iMac in on 12 Sep to repair microphone and video crashes. They repaired the mike and replaced the video card with an NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT. I picked it up on 3 Oct.
I have SMCFan and iStat Pro installed to monitor and adjust the minimum fan speed. I tried the usual troubleshooting steps (e.g., reset PRAM, Safe Boot, ran troubleshooting utilities, etc. to no avail.

    David,
Looking through my old posts to refresh my memory, my face is red as *I AM* mistaken:O
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4064287&#4064287
I was recalling that Intel iMac users were doing the wrong SMC result three years ago (actually they were doing the SMU reset that was for the pre-Intel G-5 iMacs), and that you and I explained to them the correct way - which is of course what you recommended above:D
Nevertheless, since there is no further risk of causing the fans to race in this instance, I would myself do the wrong SMC reset method, and if it does not work, turn right around and do it the way Apple recommends. This still might result in correcting the problem.
By the way, it was widely reported three years ago that the SMC reset was frequently not successful on the first attempt, so the alternative is to try this harmless procedure at least several times before giving up on it.

  • IMac late 2006 doesn't boot

I just got a late 2006 iMac, 2.16Gh Intel Core Duo. The computer will not boot. The Apple and the spinning gear appear as thgough it will start up but the iMac shuts itself off. I used universal copys of Leopard and Snow Leopard and the computer just ejects them. How can I open the iMac to physically reset the SMU on the MLB or change the Hard Drive if necessary?
I have reset the PRAM and reset the SMU by umplugging and holding the power buttom as I plugged it in.
I do not know what operating system is on he iMac but I think it is Leopard.
What is my next step to get this iMac to boot?

    playshop wrote:
I purchased from apple a copy of leopard. I purchased from apple a copy of Snow Leopard. These disks are NOT computer specific. They will work on ANY macs.
While your statement isn't correct they will not work on ANY Mac they should work fine on one of your vintage. What I mean is an license of OS X that is earlier than the original installed on the computer when it shipped from Apple will not work. For example if you bought a Mac with Snow Leopard on it you cannot install Leopard on it. However your machine originally shipped with Tiger therefore if the discs you have are upgrade DVDs of Leopard and Snow Leopard assuming your computer meets or exceeds those OS's requirements they should work fine. IN addition if the media you have is the media that shipped with other Mac's they will not work on your machine because that media is machine specific.
I'm not sure what you have (a photo of the media would be very helpful) however it's possible you have a hardware problem. What I'd recommend at this point is running Apple Hardware Test in exteneded mode. If no errors occur then run AHT in Extended Mode 2-3x, this will take awhile, probably 2-3 hours. If you still don't get any errors then your next stop is an AASP or Apple Store for professional diagnostics.

One thing to realize is that the "Webprocess" consuming mass qualities of CPU will come and go depending on the pages you are browsing. It shouldn't do that high CPU constantly only periodically. Some simple pages will take very little, very complex pages with lots of images and flash and ads and other misc stuff can make the CPU usage soar. But that's hard/impossible to predict, so just keep an eye on it and you'll get a feel for pages you might want to avoid and pages that are no big deal to process.
    good luck...

  • IMac (late 2006) model failing to boot

    Hi Everyone,
I have a 24 inch Intel iMac (late 2006) that has just died.
Running Command-V on boot up I get the following output in the console:

What is going on here? I put in my Leopard DVD and booted with the Option key down. The first time only the DVD appeared as a boot option. When I booted into the DVD I couldn't see the Hard disk with the System Profiler or Disk Utility Could only see the DVD).
After a few reboots the Hard disk suddenly appeared on holding down Option during bootup. Now I could see also see it in the Disk Utility. I tried to run Repair Disk and it just hangs.
Is this a faulty drive or perhaps a loose SATA connection? From the Terminal I can go to \Volumes\Macintosh HD\Users etc and see files but as I go down the directory tree it starts to go very slow and after a while an ls command gives no response.
Very strange behaviour. Any advice would be most welcome. I am thinking the drive has gone but I don't want to replace it if I don't have to. Luckily I am backed up up until a month ago with Time Machine, however there are a couple of things I would like to recover off this disk.
    Thanks again,

    smarkt,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It appears your internal HD has failed or is on it's last legs so it's time to replace it. If you have any Apple Care left you can get it covered under warranty however if you don't then I'd recommend you take it in to be replaced. You can use this link for locating an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The good news you have a backup of your important files.
As far as the remaining information you want to save that will depend on the condition of the existing internal HD. You may have to resort to a data recovery service (worst case) or if it's still got a little life in it you can put it in an enclosure and once the new HD is in your iMac move information to the new HD or your external HD.
    Best or luck,
    Roger
