File already Open?
We had a power failure in a school while people had AppleWorks Docs open. Files were saved to OS X 10.4 server (did not lose power) from OS X 10.39 machines that did lose power. When the students go to reopen their saved files they get the msg that "this file is opened by another application" and they cannot open the file nor copy it.
I've run into this problem before and have solved it by copying the file to another volume as root on the server and then back into the student's folder, but this time this does not seem to work.
I would rather just change the 'open bit' on the file if I could. There must be a Unix command to do this.
thanks,
Hi B,
I don't think there's anything you can do through AppleWorks to fix this.
The problem and its solution might more easily be found in the Mac OS X Server forum or Mac OS X Tiger Forum.

Barry

Error message when finalizing...file already open with write protection
I just created my first movie in i Movie. It's about 9 minutes long. When I tried to finalize it it worked for a couple of hours and then came up with a message "unable to prepare project for publishing because an error occurred (file already open with write protection)". What does this mean? I thought I had closed all the files I was using. There was no error number. I tried it 3 times and got the same message. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
AppleMan, I just checked that and it looks like Time Machine isn't open. I checked it by going to finder>applications>R click on time machine. It gave me the option to "open" which makes me think it's already closed. Is there somewhere else I need to be looking?
I made another movie that was just a couple of clips and it finalized fine. On that movie, I had some MTS clips and I converted them to mp4's so iMovie could read them.
In the one that didn't work I did clip one of the movies before I imported it into iMovie. It saved as a .mov instead of a .mp4. Would that make a difference? I checked all of the files and none of them are listed as locked, so I really don't get the "write protected" aspect of this error. -
I'm trying to finalize/share to Media Browser a 20 minute still slide show with music and text. I'd like to finalize it 1080 hd and have tried several times, but just before it's finished, a message box pops up saying it can't be done because "File already open with with write permission." What does this mean? All files are closed; this iMovie project is the only thing open. Does it mean one of the song files from iTunes? And should I just settle for saving it as a "large" file, which is what I'm trying right now?
Thanks,
JamieHi

In iMovie I am getting this message...Unable to prepare project for publishing. The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. File already open with write permission.
How do I resolve this?Hi
Most often it helps by - Turning Off the TimeMachine application - during work in iMovie.

When I click on finalize project or when I tried to share on Vimeo iMovie goes through this ten hour operation and the, somethime while I'm away from the computer, I get this error message. UNABLE TO PREPARE PROJECT FOR PUBLISHING. The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (File already open with with write permission).
This has happened to me before and I can't nail down the particulars of when this happens. I will say I've never been able to Finalize A Project (not even sure what than means) but I have been able to publish short films to YouTube. This current film is a little over an hour and I picked the HD Format. Could the size have something to do with it?See the discussion here:

I HAVE COMPLETED SEVERAL IMOVIES AND FINALIZED JUST FINE. NOW I GET THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE FROM MY LATEST PROJECT. "The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (File already open with write permission)"! What is going on?
Hi
Error -49 opWrErr File already open with write permission
Trash the preference files while application is NOT Running.
Easiest way to find out if this is the problem is by:
• Create a new User-Account
• Log out of Your old one and into this
• Re-try iMovie
If it now works OK - then 99.9% the problem is iMovie pref. file that needs to be trashed.

I received a message "OpWrErr: file already open with write permission" when trying to finalize a project in iMovie 11?
Could be a Time Machine error. Try going to the Time Machine Preferences panel and turning off Time Machine. Then try it again. Be sure to turn Time Machine back on when you finish.

The movie could not be exported because an error occurred. (File already open with with write permis
Never received this error until I updated to newer operating system. This sounds vaguely like the Error -49 some people have been getting. It's related to a feature in Time Machine geared towards laptop users who aren't always connected to their Time Machine backup drive.
This requires using the Terminal app, in your Applications/Utilities folder
To turn off Time Machine snapshots type in the following command:
sudo tmutil disablelocal
The Mac will likely ask for your password, so type it in and hit the return key. The type the word, exit and hit return. Quit Terminal.
Open iMovie and try doing another export and see if the same error message pops up. -
Thoughts on how LabVIEW handles checkout of file from SCC when file already open
When you already have a file/project open in LabVIEW and it is set to read only because you haven't checked it out, you can go into SCC and do a checkout then save the file immediately. The issue with this is, if your local copy doesn't match the copy in SCC, you will probably be overwriting changes. Sometimes this is convenient because if you have ever edited a MS Word file and then gone to save and it won't let you because it was opened as read-only...then that sucks because you either lose your work, or have to do a copy of the entire word file->close the program->re-open as writable, then paste. This can be avoided with the "LabVIEW way", but the "MS Word" way seems much safer because it forces you to conscioiusly make the file writable (by either checking it out or manually write clicking and changing to writable) BEFORE opening it. I just wanted people's opinions on how LabVIEW handles this, and if there would be a better way.

Hi everyone,
While opening a file in Adobe reader 10 in Windows 7,I am getting the error as
"The maximum number of files are already open.No Other files can be opened or printed until some are closed."
Can Anyone help or suggest a setting for this ?
Thanks in Advance
OmkarHello omkar841987,
Could you please let me know how many files have you opened simultaneously.
This count will include files that are being displayed as well as opened (without being shown in the viewer).
Using Reader, you cannot make any setting for the same, but close some of the files before crossing that limit.
It also depends on your OS and memory size as you would need enough memory to open many files at a time.
Regards,
Anubha
