File and folder sharing and permissions.

Many times when we copy files or folders to another mac computer, their permissions change, and many times the new user can not open it, until the file or folder permissions are changed. It start happen with MacOX 10.5, and still is happening with 10.7, with 10.5 we were waiting for the patch, but it never arrived, then I think is not a mistake for apple software developers??. But how can I solve this issue? the people need to interchage files and folders by USB, or network, and need to work as soon as possible with that materials and not loose time changing permissions. Someone knows what can I do to solve it?

Did you log out of one account and into the other or just used Fast user switching?
Is the permissions set to anyone?
When you move data to teh Shared folder is it copied or just moved?
If copied then it's not a folder both can access, just a way station like a USB thumb drive that things are coped too and off of likely.
You can run this #5 on each user account to reset the user permissions once they are taken back out of the Shared folder

  • Warning:  SUID File (11 Files) and "Permissions Differ" - No Install Disc

    Hello,
Have had my black macbook for about 3 1/2 years now (leopard) and having problems with it being really sluggish and freezing up. Additionally, the fan is coming on a lot and being really loud. I have checked activity monitor (all processes) and nothing is running over 12...Question is are the "warning suid files" and "permissions differ" the source of these problems? I can't find my original install disc (have one for my i mac but no good I hear.) Guessing I need to go to the genius bar to fix this issue...Thanks, PoorGradStudent

Hello and welcome to the discussions, Those warning are normal and nothing to worry about.
While your at the genius bar see if they will run a diagnostics test on your laptop. Note, if your problems only show up after it has been on for an hour, get there an hour early and warm it up.
No use in have them look at it if you can't replicate the problem.
    Cheers,
    Glynn

  • Sharing files and permissions

    Hi everyone,
I have two folders on my computer that I am sharing within my local network. I went to the Sharing pane and added these folders to the list of folders to be shared. Not only that I have given the group "Everyone", read and write access. (I am doing this, so that my kids could go to their own computer or my computer and have access to the same folder (and files) located on my computer). Everything works fine. But here's what I am running into. When I try to delete a file within this folder, I have to authenticate - this is okay with me (albeit a bit inconvenient) but I am sure they would need my admin password to delete something (which in a way defeats the purpose - atleast in my case!). The reason I am sharing this particular folder AND giving EVERYONE read write access is so that anyone can add, modify AND delete files in the folder. Why do deletions have to be authenticated? Eventhough this might be a "better safe than sorry" philosophy, since I have deliberately chosen to give "everyone" read & write access, they should be able to delete. Is there anyway to get around this? I am sure there is something that I can do in the Terminal - please do tell but it would be better if there's a graphical setting somewhere?...
    Thanks!

Run Verify Disk in Disk Utility.
If it's just your home folder where this is happening, reset home folder permissions.

  • PDF files and permissions

Whenever I print documents as PDF files, Adobe Reader 9 opens, the PDF file appears and the following warning invariably appears:  "C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe  Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.  You may not have the appropriate permissions ot access the item."  When I click OK, I am able to access the PDF file.  How can I make the message not appear each time?

If the files have a permissions password, you need to know it, and remove security, before you can edit the files. That is correct.

  • Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac work with OSX Server?

    Hi There
I wonder if I should install OSX Server on an iMac wher several users work on the same files and folders.
My question - before I do something I might regret:
Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac within several users really work with the help of OSX Server?
All I want to be able to do:
Admin creates a new folder1 and gives it read- and write access for user1 and user2.
    User1 creates a subfolder1 in folder1, and a document1 in subfolder1.
    User2 edits document1. Later Admin edits document1.
All these simple editing of files and folders (and subfolders) within a main folder should be possible. This is not possible now.
Is everything clear? I'm not a network specialist or something, I just want to give some co-workers access to some data on my computer without problems.

So what you need are recursive permissions.
I suggest you create a group and add user1 and user2 to that group. You can name that group whatever you want, but for now i will call it FSUsers
Execute this in terminal. Replace FSUsers with your new group
    sudo chmod -R +a "FSUsers allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextat tr,writeextattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/*
Replace /Users/Shared with the location of your shared folder. Make sure you keep the /* at the end (this allows all subfolders and files to get the same permissions.
If you need to add people to the share just add them to the FSUsers group, the FSUsers group should should also be allowed in the sharing preferences.

  • How do I setup users to create files in /Users/Shared with group permissions default to rw and not just r?

I have setup my iMac with 4 user accounts (for the wife and kids).   Some files I would like them to all have access to and that access be read / write.
I believe I should use the /Users/Shared directory but when a user creates a file there the permissions are rw for the owner but only r for the group & other.   I would like the permissions to default to rw also for group when the file is created so any of them can edit the shared file.
Basically the umask is defaulting as 0022 and I would like it to be 0002.
How can I set their account behavior to be this way by default?  Thanks

You should be able to take the permissions you have set and "apply to enclosed items." I am trying to attach a picture of what this looks like so my apologies if it does not work.
Highlight your folder you want and go to File>Get Info or command+I and at the bottom where it has Sharing and Permissions, click the lock button to authenticate. Click the gear and click "apply to enclosed items". See if that works.

  • Sharing & permissions suddenly read only on files and folders

Almost all folders and files including home folder have suddenly had their sharing and permissions privileges switched to read only
No indication of why this happened. Tedious to go through each item, enter password, add parties and change to read and write.
    Is there a quick fix?

Run Verify Disk in Disk Utility.

  • How to upload a text file from a shared folder and provide an o/p

how to upload a text file from a shared folder and provide an o/p  containing the details in each order in the text file

    Hi,
Use <b>GUI_UPLOAD</b> to upload a text file from a shared folder.
Use <b>GUI_DOWNLOAD</b> to download data in a file on the presentation server or use <b>OPEN DATASET, TRANSFER</b> and <b>CLOSE DATASET</b> statements to download data to the application server.
Now, I hope the code for data fetching, if required, is already present in the report.

  • How to change sharing and permissions access on an Excel Version 14.4.3 (140616) file

I've created several Excel (from Office:Mac 2011) files on my MapPro; the are on the 'backup' drive (not the main drive).  When accessing the 'get info' menu on the file, it shows that I can read and write; but if I open the file, the file name indicates it is read only, and attempts to save changes result in a message that requires a new name for the file.  What can I do to change the read/write restriction so I can make changes without having to constantly rename the file with the changed information included?

    Hello David,
Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities.
The following articles explain how to change the permissions on files or folders. The first article is for Mavericks and the second for Mountain Lion.

  • File and folder permissions for Adobe Photoshop CS5

    Good day,
I am an IT specialist and I work for a Canadian governement agency and we are having an issue with Photoshop CS5. After successfully installing Photoshop CS5 from the Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium set(using a local machine administrator account), Photoshop crashes immidiatly after launching it(even with the local administrator account). The exact error message is as follows:
The instruction at "0x230dad8dc" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
I know this is an environement issue and not an application or hardware issue since I was able to successfully install and run Adobe Photoshop CS5 on a plain vanilla install of Windows SP3 XP on the same model of workstation(HP DC7800). This later also confirms it is not a RAM or video adapter issue either. My experience tells me it would be more related to file/folder permissions on the workstation(although I'm open to other suggestions).  Because we are a governement agency, our workstations have machine and user policies and desktop configurations that get applied to the workstations automatically upon joining our domain via GPOs and SMS. Certain system files and folder permissions may be locked down for security reasons therefor I was wondering is someone has a list of files and folders that Adobe CS5 needs access to upon startup in order to properly function?
If anyone would like more details or information please let me know and I'll try to be more specific.
Thanks in advance to all who take the time to read and help out!

I appreciate that you're trying to surmise what's different, and it's good that you have had success with similar/identical hardware.  At least you know it can work.
However, I wouldn't bet just yet that it's a permissions issue.  I'd think you should get a specific error if a locked-down file needed to be accessed, not a null pointer crash.  The Photoshop installer should be setting up the proper permissions on its own files for it to run.
Is it exactly the same video card as the other computer, on which Photoshop works?
Are you sure the video drivers are up to date with the same version as on the other computer?
At exactly what point during startup does the failure occur (i.e., is the splash screen showing, and what does the status line in the splash screen say it's doing)?

  • File Sharing and Permissions ANNOYING!!!

I'm trying to share files between my macpro and macbook pro, both running 10.5.2. The files appear to share fine between the 2. I throw a file into the public folder and it pops up on my other mac, even opens fine. But when I go to save it, it says I don't have sufficient privilages. It seems that by default any file that is shared is the property of the sending mac and automatically denies me write privilages on any files I send between my macs. The only way to fix this is copy the files once they reach their destination mac, which is annoying when you're dealing with large files and whole directories full of large files.
What I want to be able to do is copy a file or folder from, lets say, my macbook pro to my macpro and automatically have full privilages on it, without the need to re-copy it. I even set up a folder outside of the public folder and set that up as a shared folder. That didn't work. When I connect between my macs I do it via direct ethernet and I don't use the guest account.
I'm a digital graphics artist, so this is **** trying to keep my assets available and up to date on both my machines.
Oh, and I can't use target disk mode unfortunately (has to do with license servers, floating licenses and lengthy 3d renders).
thanks for any help on this,
    kvb

The easiest way is to authenticate as a valid user on each box.
    For your MacBook Pro
Click on "Connect as..." on the MacPro icon and enter the username and Password of a valid user on the MacPro.
    For your MacPro
Click on "Connect as..." on the MacBookPro icon and enter the username and Password of a valid user on the MacBookPro.
That should work, with full access.

  • How do I ensure permissions I set apply to all files and folder below

    Hi Everyone,
I dont know if you will be able to help but Im sure someone will know the answer to this one.
OK, so, I run my MAC with a VMWare Fusion Windows Virtual Machine running Windows 7  and I manage my time machine and some other backups using a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+.
What I am finding irritating is that say I use the Apple+CTRL+i command to change the permissions on the 'Pictures' folder to give the account I use for the Windows access and ReadyNAS access to have 'Read + Write' permissions, then 'apply to enclosed items', this works fine.
However, should I move files, create new ones or the system creates new ones, it does not apply the permissions I set. This is irritating because it is preventing the NAS box from completing a sucessful backup and I often find that if I try and open an image for example on my Windows VM, I will get a messaging informing me that I don't have permission to open that file.
What I then have to do is repeat the permissions setting process, then I can open the file and work on it.
This is becomming extraordinarily irritating and Im sure there is something I can do but I dont know what that may be.
PLEASE can someone help me from going insane!?
    Thanks,
    Ross

When you create an action, the first step is the "Start with" step where you can select a folder. Just to the right of that there's an icon that you can click to select other file types. Just deselect them all.
An alternative it to temporarily move the PDFs to another folder.

  • Default File and Folder Permissions

    Hello everyone,
Is there anyway to set a default file/folder permissions for a parent folder and then if any new files or folders get created within that folder that files use 0644 and folder use 0755? I'm running MAMP for a localhost test site to run Joomla CMS, I have the parent folder set to 0755 but when ever I install a new extension in to Joomla the files are not writable. Is there a way I can set the main parant plublic_html / www folder to work like this for new child files and folders?
    Thanks guys.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • QTSS file and folder permissions

I am having a lot of problems getting QTSS and QTSS Publisher working correctly. I think this may be due to file and folder permissions. Does anyone know what the correct ownership and access settings should be for the folders containing my quicktime files?
    Thanks.

Try setting the ownership and permissions of those files to the ones mentioned on the end of this page, which are: owner: qtss, group: admin, permissions for owner and group: Read & Write, and Read only for others.
