File and printer sharing using Airport Express, usb HP Deskjet 3620 printer

I have a general question, and other forum users might have a good resolution for it - but if not, here's what i'm dealing with..
I have an Airport Express that I bought a couple of years back, it has all the necessary firmware upgrades, i'm running 2 Windows XP boxes going through a combination of Ethernet on 1 directly to the 2 Wire Home Portal 2701HG-B, and I also have an additional Netgear WGR614 v7. All firmware upgrades on all devices is installed and functioning after reset.. I've tried using a combination of the Windows XP built-in networking software, Apple Airport Utility, as well as Bonjour to get things configured and working right over the network. I've also installed the AT&T software, one is running the Mcafee security suite, and mine (the Etnernet box) is running the diagnostic utility.
I've tried defaulting all the firewall settings in either/or/all routers i've tried setting the Airport up with, and there still seems to be problems getting file and printer sharing to work right on all computers, and still remain safe behind the firewall. All the network hardware is set up with wpa2/psk authentication, and appears to be configured correctly.
The only version of the Apple Airport Utility that will run successfully on the systems, is the original version that came on the CD with the Airport. Both systems are completely up-to-date from Windows update, and are both running XP service pack 3.
I know for a fact, that the Airport is working just fine, as I've troubleshot all possible known hardware issues with it individually, hooked up to 1 pc (with current updates installed and running). Wireless works fine, i'm actually running the Airport utility on my main system in the living room, that's hooked up hardwired to the router. Both systems get online and surf without a problem going through either/or router as well. I've also tried dissabling the Windows firewall on both systems, and trying to set up file and printer sharing manually using the wizard, and that don't seem to resolve the issues either. However, both systems (wheather hooked up networked, OR individually), have both been experiencing some odd "quirks". The Ethernet box i'm on, has overwritten my primary HD, as "Athena" and made it unusable. The wireless box, has been giving simular "boot-up" related errors as well. I've checked the Cmos/DOS settings on both, and performed the suggested "boot-up" priority related tasks, and both systems are still experiencing problems. The Mcafee suite is up-to-date, and has caught several potentially dangrous programs running on the wireless box, hooked up to the Airport Express, INCLUDING the bundled HP diagnostic software.. However file and printer sharing still remains elusive...
Are there any suggestions about settings to check on the devices, or in the computers, to make sure it's all configured correctly?

...Also file/printer sharing just flat out over the network is NOT a problem, as it's been configured before over ethernet through my Netgear router and file/printer sharing worked just fine.
The main problem seems to be in the Airport Express' settings, it will "get configured" and then lock me out of the utility to where I can't get back in..
The main Airport password has not been changed, and the wireless network encryption is the same for all wireless devices running on the network.
The main problem, just seems to be with the Airport.
Even the Home Portal has detected the Netgear router (unless it having my Netgear router saved in it's settings might be causing a conflict)... Suggestions?
I've contacted AT&T Home Networking for help already about the Home Portal, unfortunately they can not help me with other network related issues, since i'm not using the 2 wire wireless adapters offered by AT&T...

You will need to install an App like Print Central on the iPad to try to print to the printer. It will allow you to print to most printers. Check with their support folks if you need more info.

I have an iP4500, which I assume is quite similar to your model.
I had to reset the printing system to get things printing again. Only takes a few minutes and no problems at all since I did it a week ago or so.
Plug the printer into the USB port on the Express and restart the printer.
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and then open Print and Fax
Right-Click in the printer area on the left and select Reset Printing System
Then click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list to install the printer again.

  • Can I use Airport Express to connect to a printer, Time Machine Back up drive, second b/u drive, and scanner through a USB hub? if so, how?

I have an Airport Express that connects to my printer. I'd like to add a scanner, and two back up drives (one for use with Time Capsule, another specifically for photographs backed up from Adobe Lightroom.
The printer connects to the Airport Express through a USB hub and is recognized.  I cannot get the scanner nor either of the back up drives to be recognized.  Is there a way to do it or will I need to rely on a USB hub wired to the USB port of the MacBookPro?  If it is possible, can you walk me through the set up for each?
    Thanks,
    Doug Earle

I'd like to add a scanner, and two back up drives (one for use with Time Capsule, another specifically for photographs backed up from Adobe Lightroom.
Unfortunately, the USB port on the AirPort Express will only work with a compatible printer.
It will not work with a scanner, copier, or hard drive.
It should be possible to do what you want by connecting a powered USB hub to your Mac and then connecting the devices to the powered hub.
The setup for the scanner and hard drive would be covered by the manfacturers documentation, so providing specific advice for those types of products would be outside the realm of this support area.
But, if you can provide model numbers, it is always possible that another user who is using those products might see this post.

  • How can I get my Canon MF8350CDN to print using Airport Express USB on Lion?

I just installed a new airport express with USB to my MF8350CDN.  When I add the printer, it sees the printer, loads the UFRII driver (from my download from canon) and opens a print que.  However I try to print a test page it gives me "cmjcInitialize Error" , printer is offline, canon CMFP printer driver, check power and connection.  I print from the PC without a problem but I had to connect using IP printing to the airport's IP address.  Is there something that I am missing during the installation?

  • Cannot get printer online using airport express-totally confused right now.

Well, I got my airport express up and running. My iMac is in one room and the airport and the printer are in the other room (it is a second printer). My first printer is connected to my iMac via USB.
Cannot, for the life of me, get the printer in the other room, online, using airport. What am I doing wrong? I am clueless when it comes to these things, so it is probably something simple (and yes, the power in plugged in and on, lol).
I went to System Preferences>Print & Fax and it shows the printer OFFLINE, DEFAULT, but I am lost from here.
    Thanks!!

I'm suffering from the same problem. Printer is HP Color Laserjet 2600n with driver 1.3.1, MAC OSX 10.6.1. Setup is airport extreme as router and gateway + airport express as wireless connection for the printer. Following the airport express help doesn't help. Next test is to check whether the printer work as a network printer when connected to the airport extreme station directly. Keep you updated on the progress.

  • HP3330 Multi Funtion Laser/copier/fax/scanner shared using Airport Express

Ok, so as the title suggests, I am trying to access my HP3330 Multifunction Laser/copier/fax/scanner which is shared using an Airport Express in the other room. I can print to it just fine, so communication is good. What I am curious about is a way to use the fax and or scanner wireless
    Any help gladly appreciated.

  • Mac doesn't wake printer up. Printer connected to Airport Express' USB

    Setup here is:
    - Brother printer (all-in-one DCP-7060D) hooked up to the USB port of an Aiport Express.
    - MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
    - Wi-fi network serving multiple devices.
    - One of the devices is a PC running Windows 7.
    Problem here is:
The printer enters into a "Deep Sleep" mode after some time of inactivity, as indicated on its little screen. In this mode, only the PC running Windows 7 can successfully wake the printer up automatically when it sends a print command. In other words, I'm working on the PC, say in a Word document. I hit "Print", bingo, the printer wakes up, does its thing and beautifully spits out a printed copy of my Word document. As it should.
On the other hand, if I'm working on any Macintosh computer on the same wi-fi network, say in a Word document, I hit print and nothing happens with the printer. On the Print Queue in the Mac that sent the print order, it says the printer is offline.
This problem kind of comes and goes and I've already updated the printer's firmware and drivers (strangely, this is one of those that don't come in OS X by default).
    Ideas? Suggestions?

Ya' know.. I'm not totally sure. I went to Airport Utility... selected my base station, clicked on Manual Setup... clicked on Disks and saw that my USB Drive was listed. After that I opened the finder, went to network, connected to my base station from there and my USB Drive popped up and I mounted it.
    It's been working fine since.

  • Trying to share internet connection using Airport Express

I have an internet connection via a Verizon Wireless broadband card in the Express Card slot in my MacBookPro. I share this connection to my iMac via Airport and I have an Airport Express card connected to a printer & stereo. However, when I establish the Airport internet connection (internet sharing in System prefrences) it establishes a wireless network in the MacBook (I think) as evedinced by the Airport signal (fan) logo changing to a vertical arrow. This precludes connecting to the Airport Express (the Airport Express network is not shown in the Airport pull down menu, only the MacBook network). My question is: can I somehow share the internet connection using the Airport Express network???

ejagnut, Welcome to the discussion area!
Configure the AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network created by your MacBook Pro. The directions can be found in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Cant print from Win XP and Win 7 machines using Airport Express

I have two airport expresses each hooked to a printer. Both are ini ethernet mode only; wireless is turned off. With our two Macbooks, all works perfectly; it was foolproof to set-up and both macbooks can priunt to either printer at will.
We have a Win 7 laptop; oddly, it will only print to one of the two printers
We have a Win XP desktop, it wont print to either printer.
In boht cases on the windows machines, I can see the airport expresses and I can configure3 them using the utilty. I can install the printers using the Bonjour Printer Wizard. Bonjour itself is running on each machine....I can tell as itunes home sharing works perfectly and I can see it as a "Service".
But when I try to print a document, it just never comes out!
I have Geek Squad coming next week....by nice if I could fix it before they get here!

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, the  AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
To see if your printer is compatible, take a look at thisiFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility link. If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also you can try this Apple Tech Support article to see if it will help: Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsule
Finally, check out this IBM support article to see if your printer is listed as having a Postscript or PCL3 interface. If it does, then it will most likely work with the AirPort's USB port. Printers that use the "HP LIDIL" interface must be connected to a computer directly and will not work.

  • I cannot print from my iPad using airport express. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to airport express thru USB port. My laptop can print with no problem thru the express unit. My lap top is no a mac.

Good day, my iPad does not seem to pick up my printer. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to my airport express thru the USB port. My laptop which is windows type connects to the printer via airport express thru bonjour and this work well. My iPad does not pick up my printer thru the airport express. I have read about different software that you can download but this seems to be only if you are using a mac. I know my express is working fine as I can use airplay thru my iPad. Any ideas? I do not want to go to the expense of changing my printer, when there was no mention in the express details that your printer had to be AirPrint compatible or indeed wireless.

See this article to learn how to print from an iPad to your USB printer when you have a PC.  The PC will need to be running when you want to print from the iPad.

  • Can I use Airport Express for printing and Ethernet printing at same time?

I've been trying to set up a couple of laser printers that were given to me recently. The printers are Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS and Samsung CLP-510. The reason I'd like to have both up and running is because the black toner for the Samsung costs twice as much as the toner for the LaserWriter. I have two questions that I am hoping someone will be able to answer.
    1) The CLP prints a test page just fine. I was finally able to get the Samsung printing while directly connected to my PowerBook G4 via usb (I had to install a Xerox Phaser 6100 driver to do so!). Today I tried putting the usb into my Airport Express (which I use for my portable internet and airtunes) and now the printer does not respond. When I try to add the CLP as a bonjour printer, I get an error adding the printer and the printer does not respond. Can someone offer some advice as to how and if the CLP may work via the Airport Express?
    2) The LaserWriter prints a test page just fine. I purchased a transceiver (albeit not an Apple transceiver - this one says Asante Friendlynet, the guy I bought it from said it would work though). The transceiver is connected to the Ethernet port on the printer - and I have a yellow ethernet cable (?) running from the transceiver to the ethernet port on my computer. I read somewhere on the internet that I need to turn on Appletalk in order to use the printer via ethernet but when I went into my network settings to do that, there was a warning that I could not turn on appletalk for ethernet without forsaking my airport. Can someone offer some advice as to how and if the 16/600 PS may work via ethernet without disrupting my (working) airport express? Also - I did not receive any software or drivers with this printer but I read that I may not need to (they come with Tiger - ?) Is anyone able to confirm this?
Any help would be TOTALLY appreciated!
    Leigh-Ann

Hello Kappy! Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.
I should update you at this point to say that I can add the 16/600 PS printer through a process that I found called 'Direct IP printing over ethernet'. (I think I've done this correctly - but I honestly have no idea about network stuff). Here's what I did:
-went into system prefs and looked at the network settings under built-in ethernet tab. Under TCP-IP I found the IP address of my network host.
-In the Printer Setup Utility I tried to manually add the 16/600 PS printer. In the Printer Browser window, I selected IP Printer.
-Under IP printer, I selected LPD Protocol. I inserted the IP address copied from my network settings (above) in the address bar. In the Queue bar I typed in the name of the printer 'Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS'.
-Again in the Printer Browser box I gave the printer a name and location. Finally, in the 'print using' box I selected Apple and then chose the model from the drop down list. 'Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS fax v.2014.016'
-I got a dialogue box that asked about other installable features - clicked ok.
-when I tried to print a Word document, the Apple LaserWriter driver opened up and appeared in my dock and then I got an immediate error saying "network host ---.---.--.--- is busy, down, or unreachable..."
-I tried to repair permissions, but it did not resolve my issue.
-I noticed that even after adding the 16/600, it did not show up as a bonjour printer, but remained visible as a printer in my list (although grayed out).
I did some troubleshooting and the best I could find as a close match for my problem was that perhaps I had entered the name incorrectly in the Queue box...? If anyone knows how to find the appropriate name to insert I would sure appreciate knowing.
Finally - you should probably know that I received this printer from someone else. I guess I'm wondering if I need to be resetting network settings on the printer somehow? The test page lists the following:
    Ethernet (Address: 08:00:07:84:78:e9)
    EtherTalk: PostScript
    NetWare: AutoSelect
    TCP/IP: AutoSelect
    IP address: 0.0.0.0
And - now finally, to answer your questions (the best I can, that is)
I did connect the yellow network cable directly into my laptop (right side, 4th input, counting away from me). I have a portable internet modem that plugs into my wall (for power) and then has a cable (Ethernet?) that goes into my Airport Express (LAN port?). I have no other router and there are no other inputs or outputs on my modem. My Airport Express has only one input for the modem, one mini input for airtunes, and one usb input (in which I have a cable connecting to my other laser printer (now working wirelessly via Airport Express!!)
Should I have these cables hooked up differently?
What is a Phonenet adaptor? My internet is provided via a cable service (not DSL). It is wireless and portable - I can take it to any major city in Canada and it works as long as it is plugged into a power source and near a window.
I really appreciate any help you can offer. At this point I must have spent the better part of almost two weeks trying to get these older laser printers up and running.
    Thank you again.

  • Help - Receive message "an error occurred printing this document" when using airport express and Ipad

Hi, I am trying to set up an airport express hub to work with a Star tsp100 receipt printer and IPad 2. The IPad is being used to accept credit card payments and I was hoping to print receipts out wirelessly using the airport express and receipt printer. I checked to make sure the airport express has the latest firmware and it does. The IPad software is also updated to the latest 7.1.  I then connected the Airport express and IPad and the network setup with no problems. I connected the receipt printer to the airport express using the USB slot available. While the printer comes up as available, when I attempt to print something, I get the error message "An error occurred printing this document" and I can cancel or Try again. No matter how many times I try, I continue to get this message and I lost as to the cause. When I disconnect and reconnect, another instance of the printer appears, but receive the same cryptic error message when I try to print. Totally lost, please help

    Hi kelston3,
In order to print from an iPad you will need to use a printer that is compatible with AirPrint, which is described in the following article -
    About AirPrint
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
AirPrint printers must be wireless on your network - not connected via USB to the base station. There is a list of printers that are known to be compatible with AirPrint in the article.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
