File association changes won't stick

I have a bunch of .svg files that I want to associate with the software for my Silhouette digital cutting machine. I do the whole procedure - go to Get Info, then change Open with: to Silhouette instead of Safari, then choose Always Open With, then click Add, then click Change All, then click continue. When I click continue, the Open with flips back to Safari. I can't believe there's no way to change all files to associate with another app. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

This only happens when double clicking a pdf file.  The default common toolbar is opened every time.

  • How To Make File Association Changes Permenant

I'm having a problem with file associations reverting back every time I turn of my computer.
I'm using Finder "change all" function to change the file association.  It works until I turn off my computer.  Once rebooted file associations return.
It's a real hassle.  For some reason MP4 files keep getting associated with Windows media player. Everytime I try to open one, parallalels loads up windows.
    Any advise?

  • QT stole all my file associations and won't give them back

Once I installed the latest iTunes, Quicktime decided to steal all my file associations. Now anytime I click on an mp3 on a website, I get that annoying QuickTime plugin that takes up the entire page when I used to get a Windows Media Player plugin that either opened as a new instance, or in the left media column.
I went into the MIME and File Types settings for Quicktime and removed everything, I also went into my Windows File Types and made sure mp3s were set to play with Windows Media Player. None of this helped.
How can I get my file associations back?
    Thanks.

Try altering the tag for the ringtone: right-click on a ringtone in iTunes and select Get Info, go to the Info tab and make a slight change to the Artist, tap OK and try syncing again.  If it transfers to your phone do the same for the others.

  • Pushing a file association change?

Does anyone know how to go about issuing a change in file association to remote clients, either by commandline, an applescript, or MCX record?
I recently installed Bean wordprocessor for use in an elementary school, however the documents default to textedit when I launch them. I would prefer not to have to touch all these laptops if necessary.
Any means of changing file association via ARD or Server would be appreciated.

    Try downloading the offline installers:
    Adobe Reader
Flash Player for Internet Exporer - ActiveX
Flash Player for Firefox - NPAPI

  • File associations change when new packages are installed (GNOME)

    Hello!
Imagine I set Geany to open text files. It works, I just double click the files and they open with Geany. When I install Wine/Gedit/whatever... it overwrites my file association with Geany, opening it by default with notepad.exe/gedit/whatever.
    Can someone help me?
    Thanks, acmps

I don't know why this happens sometimes after installing or messing around with wine, but I can also confirm multiple, false entries in that associations-list.
But I know how to get rid of it after it happened (concerning these entries in my gnome-open-dialogue):
Delete the files which fit in ~/.local/share/applications/* or have a look at mimeapps.list which is also located there

  • Page Tool Changes Won't Stick (CS 6)

    Hello,
I have had this happened a couple of times, although most of the time I don't have this problem, and I haven't been able to locate the option to stop this.
Simply put, when I select the Page Tool in the toolbox and I resize the page, once I release the mouse button the page will go back to the previous size. The only way to change it has been by inputting the size manually.
I am using Web Intent in the document properties, if it makes any difference.
    Thanks in advance!

The dragging is just for a preview for Liquid Layouts.
    From the Help Files
    Liquid layouts
Liquid layouts make it easier to design content for multiple page sizes, orientations, or devices. Apply liquid page rules to determine how objects
on a page are adapted when you create alternate layouts and change the size, orientation, or aspect ratio.
You can apply different rules to different pages, depending on the layout and the goals; only one liquid page rule can be applied to a page at a
time. Liquid Layout is a general term that covers a set of specific liquid page rules: scale, re-center, guide-based, and object-based page rules.
Use Liquid page rules to adapt content for output sizes.
To adapt layouts when creating new pages in the same document using alternate layouts.
To adapt layouts when changing existing page sizes. This is more efficient than the previous Layout Adjustment feature.
To apply a liquid page rule, select the Page tool
and click a page. Then choose a liquid page rule from the control bar. You can also use the
    Layout
    >
    Liquid Layouts
To preview the effects of the applied rule, use the Page tool to drag the page handles to resize the page. The page snaps back to original size
    when you release it.
To resize the page, press Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) and then drag. Using the mouse, however, to resize the page could result in pages that are slightly off the intended size. Its more accurate to resize the page with the Height and Width widgets in the control bar.

  • File Association: "Change All" working only for recommended programs

    Hello,
I am having problems with the "Change All" function in the Finder. I only seem to be able to make a change to a program which is already recommended in the drop-down menu. If I use "Other..." and select the program and then select "Change All", it automatically reverts back to the Default setting.
    As a concrete example:
I want to open all .tiff files with Acrobat Pro 7.0, the default setting is Preview. If I select Acrobat and click on Change all, I get the standard verification dialogue. However as soon as I confirm, the drop down menu switches back to Preview. Instead, if I select Photoshop (which is already in the drop down menue) I can make the change without problems.
I tried to restart and I even manually edited the "launch services" plist file - changing to Photoshop works after restart, changing to Acrobat is ignored.
File vault is off. Repairing permissions was also without success.
Would anyone have an idea how to fix this?
    Best regards,
    Mark
    System: Powerbook G4 Aluminium / OSX 10.4.11

Unfortunately, there isn't always a way around this. PDF files are an excellent example. A PDF file created by Adobe has a Creator of CARO and a Type of PDF_. Preview has a different Type and Creator code for PDF files created with it.
So what happens is when you assign (say the Adobe Reader) to Adobe PDF files, it associates them with those based on Adobe's Type and Creator codes. That usually means PDF files created with Preview will still open in Preview.
If you associate Preview PDFs with the Adobe Reader, then the OS breaks the link to the Adobe Type/Creator codes. Now Preview PDF files will open in the Adobe Reader. But since the Adobe created PDFs are no longer linked to the Reader, the OS opens them in the nearest default program, which is Preview.
You end up with an unwanted one-or-the-other problem.

You can't install Snow Leopard Remotely. Think about it.
What you could do - and assuming you have OSX Server - is install 10.6 on one mac, get it fully up to date, install the remaining applications - assuming site licenses - use the System Image Utility on the Server (or a Client with the application installed) to create a NetBoot Image of that built workstation. Image the rest using OSX Server's NetBoot Service. I've done numerous site installations using OSX Server and NetBoot (60 and more individual workstations) in a day or two depending on the Software installed.
Not surprisingly there is a dedicated forum for this also:

+" . . . is this a tool that would help obtain our goals quicker that installing all the software on each computer individually."+
Apart from the initial OS install - Yes. You can install incremental OS Updates using ARD easily and quickly. Again if you have OSX Server you can utilise it's Software Update Service to achieve the same thing quickly and easily.
If you don't have OSX Server you can by all means do this the way you're saying. You don't even need to use SuperDuper - why pay for something that can be done for free with what's already supplied? All you need is a firewire cable, target disk mode and the Restore option in Disk Utility. The more firewire cables you have the sooner you'll get it done.
It does not really matter what you're using for your Network although a Time Machine Capsule is adequate enough.

  • PDF file association changes to use Acrobat after Acrobat installed

    Hi,
I have packaged a silent installation of Acrobat X Professional using the Customisation wizard.  We have to make Reader the default viewer (without using a script after the install).  No matter which option I select for the default viewer in the customisation tool (as shown below), Acrobat X Professional becomes the default viewer.  I am trying to add or modify the installer database table so that it leaves the current association with Reader.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Simon

    Hi,
That has done the trick, thanks!  I found yesterday I could also use LEAVE_PDFOWNERSHIP=YES on the command line to achieve the result, however we wanted to add to the Property table of the MST.  In the case of LEAVE_PDFOWNERSHIP=YES this did not seem to work, but with IW_DEFAULT_VERB=Read it is working well.
    Thanks again,
    Simon

  • File Associations Issue

    Hi,
Everytime I start Skype I get this File Association screen come up and I click save, does this all too often, what gives cos I am stick and tired of clicking save everytime it starts, wasting my time with this stupid file assoication.
    Thanks, PJ

These Community forums are Skype user-driven.  If you want an answer from Skype support the best thing to do is contact Customer Service.
    https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA1170
I have only seen the file association screen once and it went away.  If you continue to see it then it is apparent that your computer is not saving the value.  This is probably due to some software on your machine blocking it or a corruption of your %appdata%/Skype folder.  I suggest you start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking then start Skype, save the file association change, then restart back in normal mode to see if it sticks.

  • "Always open with" won't "stick"

    Hey all,
I want to open all pdfs with Skim rather than Preview. In 10.4, clicking on a pdf and selecting "Always open with..." worked perfectly. In 10.5 it never "sticks" - clicking on pdfs after doing that, they still open using Preview. Any ideas of why "always open with" never works for me under 10.5?

I was having the same problem under 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 - I couldn't make any custom file associations "stick" (after one or two reboots, they'd all revert to factory defaults). I deleted the Launch Services preferences and cache, made sure I didn't have any "haxies" installed, and even went so far as to perform an Archive-and-Install, but nothing worked. Then I found this thread in which several people wrote that having FileVault turned on, seems to prevent file association changes from sticking:
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=85394
Turning off FileVault seems to have solved the problem for me, since my custom file associations are (so far at least) remaining as I set them. However, this remains a very serious problem for me, since I need both the security of FileVault, and the persistence of a large number of non-default file associations. In addition, the section of the "Get Info" window where file associations can be changed, is thoroughly messed-up: the drop-down box often ignores my selection (immediately returning to the default when I release the mouse button) and/or the "Change All..." button is grayed-out until I try to select the desired application again, and even when I apparently succeed at making a change, I sometimes have to repeat the whole process to make the change actually happen. (Generally I'm attempting to make these changes with files that are on a network drive on a PC.)

  • Changing the File Associations in Get Info doesn't seem to stick

Hey everyone. I hope I'm posting this in the best possible place. I just bought a new Mac Pro (single hexacore Westmere processor if that makes a difference) and I've found that the file associations aren't working. I will Get Info on a document and change the application it's supposed to open with. If I stop there, everything is great and the associated icon changes, but if I click Change All... (which is exactly what I want to do) and then click Continue, it reverts back to the default and doesn't change anything. I've changed repairing disk permissions but am a bit stumped after that. Anyone have any suggestions? I minor problem but kind of annoying (especially since I want my new baby to work perfectly). Thanks.

Grab a copy of RCDefaultApp and once installed you have a preference pane to set the Mime type/handling for any extension.

  • Can't change file association (Powerpoint 2011 to Powerpoint 2008)

    Hello
On my iMac I've recently installed MS Office 2011. The old version of Office 2008 is still installed as well. I've got some problems with the new version of Powerpoint (2011). Therefore I'd like to use the old version of Powerpoint (2008) for all my Powerpoint files.
Unfortunately it is not possible to just uninstall Powerpoint 2011 without uninstalling the whole Office suite. So my idea was: changing the file association and let opening all Powerpoint files with the older version.
The problem is: I can change the association of a single file. But if I try to apply the changes to all files of this type, it does not work. This behaviour only exists for Office files.
Does anybody know, why this happens?
Any help is appreciated. Thank you,
    Marco

Launch Services has always been a bit..."strange"
Why not compress the MS 2011 PP (right click it to bring up finder's contextual menu and select compress) into a zip file.  Trash the uncompressed file (see below).  And then launch services hopefully won't have any choice but to select and use MS 2008 PP.
Before you delete the original in the trash.  Double click the zip file to expand it back to another copy of 2011 PP.  Make sure that launches properly.  This is just an extra safety (paranoid) check to make sure the original zipped correctly.  Then you can also trash this second copy as well.

  • Do I have to change file associations in Windows 7 one at a time?

I changed my ancient Paint Shop Pro for Elements 11 but the file associations are still PSP. I can change them one at a time but that will take forever! Is there a way to associate all the appropriate files in one go?  I managed it many years ago in PSP and Windows XP but have no idea how; I'm hoping someone will know. Thank you.
