File Association Issue rendering all programs on machine unusable? Only true PDF's open.

Adobe Reader Issue since last update for Windows 7. Downloads succesfully but causes all programs and icons to be adobe reader. I cannot open programs because they are not PDF's. I have uninstall Adobe REader to be able to use my computer. Does the same thing everytime after download and install every time. Looking for solution. windows, 7, ie_9.0.8, 32_bit

File Association Issue (Windows)

Hi,
Whenever I try to open SQL Developer on a windows machine I get the file association dialog. I click the options I want then ok, and it hangs.
This is with a user with limited rights on the pc. I have tried it also with a user with 'Power Users' privileges and it works as in I am able to use SqlDeveloper but it still shows the file association dialog each time I open the application. However as the administrator this does not happen.
I've had a look through all the config files but can't see anything really evident. Is there something I am missing, a privilege that is needed by windows users?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Are you running on Vista?
If so, I believe this issue was covered here: Vista Problems
There are a couple of things you can do.
1) Run SqlDeveloper one time as Administrator
or
2) Edit sqldeveloper.conf and add: AddVMOption -Dno.shell.integration=true

File association issue with PictureView 7.2

Unlike Apple QuickTime 7.16, QT 7.2 use 2 profiles to log per user setting info:
File1 \C:\Documents and Settings\%current user%\Application Data\Apple Computer\QuickTime\QTPlayerSession.xml
File2 \C:\Documents and Settings\%current user%\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\QuickTime\QuickTime.qtp
when a limited acccount user log on and run pictureView, he will receive a dialog box ask them to reset file associations. You can not supress the dialog box even you use QuickTime control pannel. This only happens for limited user account.I don't know it is either a bug of 7.2 or Apple intends to do like this.Same thing will happen to run Quicktime from a limited user account, but you can use QuickTime.qtp to solve the issue.
Any solution to solve the pictureview issue is appreciate.

I did a few things that solved my problem. However there could be a bunch of reason for you to get this error
For ex, Operating System Collector error or problem with the paging etc.
Can you elaborate your problem with the following details:
1. Your observations of the errors through the SAP Management Console
2. Your machine OS and RAM details.
3. Are you going in for a fresh installations? or did you uninstall CE before?
May be I can help if you are facing the same issues, I did.

File Association issues after Adobe Reader XI Upgrade

After an upgrade to AdobeReader XI, pdf file association fails in outlook, and some desktops.Ftype & assoc didnt fix the issue.
I have tried several things including:
1-ftype AcroExch.Document="C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" "%1"
2-Association using default programs in control panel also didnt work......it continued to show acrobat as an unknown program
3-I went here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4275863 and it looked like he had a similar problem as we did

File Associations Issue

Hi,
Everytime I start Skype I get this File Association screen come up and I click save, does this all too often, what gives cos I am stick and tired of clicking save everytime it starts, wasting my time with this stupid file assoication.

I have only seen the file association screen once and it went away. If you continue to see it then it is apparent that your computer is not saving the value. This is probably due to some software on your machine blocking it or a corruption of your %appdata%/Skype folder. I suggest you start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking then start Skype, save the file association change, then restart back in normal mode to see if it sticks.

Acrobat XI file association issue

OS: Win 7 x64
problem: i cannot set acrobat as the default program to open pdf files. i have tried "open with", or in control panel set file association, but acrobat still cannot be added in the default program list. Any suggestions?

You have to be sure you go into the default definition part of the Open With and be sure the default check box is selected. What other product is claiming the default and is this an issue with the other program? A repair of Acrobat might resolve the issue.

Unable to open files associated with Adobe Reader - program goes into a loop

i am unable to open any file associated with adobe reader or adobe pro. when i double-click the file, adobe reader opens up but it goes into a loop.
adobe reader opens, then a progress window opens, as if the file will open but adobe closes and opens again and the same cycle repeats itself until i manually close the program.
any advice?
update:
i can open regular .PDF files when i double-click the icon and i can also open .PDF files when i open adobe reader first and then choose open file. it's just the .FDF files that are the problem (so far).
the file in question happens to be an .FDF extension, which is an internet generated form. i attached a screen shot of the screen that pops up, goes away, and pops up again that creates the loop.
the white out section is the server name where the file was saved to. but i also get the same symptoms when i am in internet explorer, hit the generate form button.

yes, it does behave the same way, it's just a continuous loop until i have to kill the process.

by this do you mean the correct permissions? if that is what you mean, then yes, the permissions are set correctly.

i really wish i could but the information in the form is sensitive and cannot be sent.
as an update though, i reimaged the customer's workstation, installed Adobe Reader 10.1.1 and it worked perfectly (finally). HOWEVER, after about two weeks the same symptoms returned!

Bridge CS6 File Association Issues

Hello,
The problem I am having is this:
I am associating a new program, RAWDigger with the NEF file type. It works and it makes RAWDigger as the default. When I go back to the File Association, RAWDigger doesn't even show up in the list. To make CS6 to be the default again I simply click on it in the list and it becomes the default. But RAWDigger is not in the list and I can't select it. What should I do?
And also why does the list contain two instances of the same software when I have one instance of it installed?

I have now uninstalled CS5. Things have not changed.
Clarification: When I add RAWDigger as one of the applications associated with the NEF it becomes the default application that Bridge will open an NEF with upon double clicking. When I go back to the preferences and select CS6 as the default I oberve that RAWDigger is not even in the list of programs. And then when CS6 is selected as default, then RAWDigger is not in the list again.

Download issue with all programs

I'm having an issue where every time I download a program (i.e. Firefox, Adobe Air, a photo uploader for Shutterly) the program saves to my desktop and looks like an external hard drive icon. These type of programs used to download to my applications folder (and LOOKED like applications) instead of cluttering up my desktop. What am I doing wrong? If I trash the external drive icon, I also lose the program.

In Safari, go to Safari->Preferences->General->Save downloaded files to: and choose the location where you want things downloaded. ~/Downloads is a good choice.
Once an item has downloaded, if it's an application, just move it from the download location (wherever that might be, such as Downloads or Desktop) to your Application folder.
What I think is happening, though, is that your downloads are still going to your Downloads folder and you are seeing the mounted disk images from the downloaded .img/.dmg (or similarly-suffixed) files. Open these up by double-clicking on the Desktop icon and then drag the required components to their destination locations (generally speaking, the application to your Applications folder). In some cases, the disk image will contain an installer, in which case you will need to double-click the installer to get the software you downloaded onto your machine properly. Read the instructions that come with the download, or on the web page of the source file.

New install of cs6 32 and 64 bit on a windows 8.1 64 bit pc file association issue

If I have the 32 bit cs6 open, and click on a psd file it auto opens in the 32 bit software which is nice. However if I have no instance of CS6 open and click a psd to open, it will allways open the cs6 64bit software, which is annoying and I would like to pull the 32 bit always.
I also tried to file associate the psd to the 32bit cs6 exe file, but when clicked it still opens the 64 bit cs6....frustrating
any ideal?

I think if you use regedit and search for the key Photoshop.exe that you will find the the default programs for open and edit are set to the 64 bit exe. Try changing them to the 32 bit exe, This is what my Windows 7 registry key look like. You would change both of them to something like:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\ Photoshop.exe " "%1"
Do you have some third party 32 bit plug-ins installed is that why you want the 32bit version to start

Different program file associations in GNOME Trash folder

So, for example, I've set up GNOME to run all *.avi files with mplayer. Now if I delete an *.avi file to a Trash folder and run it from there Banshee is used as a default associated program. In fact, mplayer is not in the "Open With..." sub-menu (only in Properties for this file but it is ignored anyway as I just described.)
I've no idea why GNOME acts this way but I can provide some background information that might help pinpointing the real issue here. I first ran KDE on my Arch Linux setup. Somewhere along the way I decided to try GNOME and so I installed it alongside with KDE. When I first ran GNOME I had many files associated with KDE's programs (torrent files for instance).
I'm relatively new to GNOME and maybe I should've clicked some magic button that re-creates an index of file association for GNOME but so far I haven't discovered one
So, what can be done about this issue?

Sounds like a file association issue in Windows. Right click on the files of interest and select Open With>Choose Default Program and select the program you want used (be sure the "always use" box is checked. The Acrobat installation should not have done this change, but this is the process to make the change on each file type.

File association bug

I have an issue with PS6 and psd files and ID6 and indd files. If I try to open either, instead of launching in their respective default applications, they both try to open in Acrobat. This happens whether or not I do it from Bridge or Windows Explorer, or right clicking and using the open with command. Bridge associations are correctly listing psd to open in photoshop cs6 and ID to open indd files. I can't change the file associations in Windows "Default Programs" either, the change just doesn't stick. Looks like a bug. I should know better than to install the first release of Adobe Suits, they're always buggy and more hassle than their worth. Hope someone has found a reasonable solution and can help? I'm using Win 7 64 bit.
btw I did try Adobe support but spent 30 mins repeating myself and trying to understand the support guys Indian accent, his last ditch suggestion was to uninstall PS and then reinstall again. Given that I have a Creative Cloud subscription and a fairly slow adsl connection, it will be an overnight effort to download PS again to test. Given my situation, I though it was an unreasonable response to my problem and asked to speak to a supervisor, after waiting on hold for a further 10mins the call was terminated from their end - talk about frustrating!

No it doesn't unfortunately. One has to download an Adobe Application Manager app and then select which of the various apps one wants. The Application Manager handles everything and gives no options other than to install each app. When updates are available they are also shown here with an install option.
I guess I'll bite the bullet and do the overnight download. Thanks again for you help.

File association keeps on reverting to old settings

I have a problem with file association.
We have both Adobe Indesign CS3 and Adobe Indesign CS4 installed in one of the macs.
By default, all indesign files are opened in CS4. What I wanted to do is have all the indesign files opened in CS3 instead.
I've already tried "Get Info" on any indesign file and changed "Open with" to CS3, and click "Change all".
However, every time I tried to do that, it keeps on reverting back to CS4 immediately.
I've already tried deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunceServices.plist but to no avai.
Any insights would be very much appreciated.

Application bundles contain an internal property list file which includes "identifiers" for an OS X system called "Launch Services", which is in turn responsible for handling the file-association process. It is possible, though I don't know this, that Adobe used the same internal identifier keys for successive CS app versions, with the result that Launch Services does not consider the different versions to be independent apps.
Again, though, I don't really know this to be the issue, and I don't have these products. Sometimes rebuilding Launch Services can clear up other file association issues, and if you want to try this there is an article about how to do it here:

I doubt this would work in this particular situation, though. If you do try it, using [OnyX|http://www.titanium.free.fr] for this is friendlier than using Terminal. Don't try either method without having a system backup, which you should have in any event.

5.0.4 upgrade toasts m2v file associations

I have a problem with m2v files that when I try to look at them in Finder the window closes and DVD Studio is unable to use them. This happened after upgrading to 5.04. I was able to change ONE m2v file to Quicktime but even checking "Apply to All" and rebooting didn't work. When I right click the file the default for m2v is now "Droplet" which I can't get rid of. Deleting Finder prefs didn't help. I have a back-up drive which still has FCP5.02 and Compressor 2.0. I tried encoding with it-no problem. No file association problem either so it appears THE 5.04 AND 2.01 "UPGRADE" have a problem. Now how to solve it on my original drive??? ALL HELP APPRECIATED.

Had this very same issue when I updated my G4 tower to 5.0.3 - all my m2v file associations in the Finder were hosed and Compressor would not launch (it would bounce once in the dock and then... nothing).
I went to the Final Cut Pro Updates page and, after going thru the Apple ID and Serial Number stuff, downloaded only the Compressor 2.0.1 package.
After installing from the package, Compressor worked, though I had to restore my file associations manually.
All that did take me about 15-20 minutes though.
