File association keeps on reverting to old settings

Hi
I have a problem with file association.
We have both Adobe Indesign CS3 and Adobe Indesign CS4 installed in one of the macs.
By default, all indesign files are opened in CS4. What I wanted to do is have all the indesign files opened in CS3 instead.
I've already tried "Get Info" on any indesign file and changed "Open with" to CS3, and click "Change all".
However, every time I tried to do that, it keeps on reverting back to CS4 immediately.
I've already tried deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunceServices.plist but to no avai.
Any insights would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!

Application bundles contain an internal property list file which includes "identifiers" for an OS X system called "Launch Services", which is in turn responsible for handling the file-association process. It is possible, though I don't know this, that Adobe used the same internal identifier keys for successive CS app versions, with the result that Launch Services does not consider the different versions to be independent apps.
Again, though, I don't really know this to be the issue, and I don't have these products. Sometimes rebuilding Launch Services can clear up other file association issues, and if you want to try this there is an article about how to do it here:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10362043-263.html
I doubt this would work in this particular situation, though. If you do try it, using [OnyX|http://www.titanium.free.fr] for this is friendlier than using Terminal. Don't try either method without having a system backup, which you should have in any event.
Other ideas welcome..

  • Lion Network Accounts files association is always reverted

    Hi,
I want to change file associations for all types, like opening all .avi with vlc instead of QuickTime.
The Workstations run Lion 10.7.2 and Have Network Homes hosted on a Lion Server 10.7.2. Whenever the user changes the file association (Get Info, dialogue...) this change is reverted after a reboot. Strangely enough the new association is still in place if the user just logs out and back again. There is no such problem with local users on the machines.
The com.apple.LaunchServices.plist where these settings are stored reflects changes made in the GetInfo dialogue. Upon reboot, the Finder seems to ignore this settings file although it stays unchanged!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I seem to have isolated the issue.
I was using wireless for both server and client, so I switched both to ethernet to eliminate any possible issues there.  No change.
Then after some more experimenting I realized my original statement
if I am logged in via any user on the client (network or local), using fast user switching to go to the login screen ALWAYS shows the network users.
was incorrect.  It turns out I have to be logged in with a local user for the network users to show up.  So I went back and experimented with the Login Window options I configured in Profile Manager.  Here is how I had my client configured.
If I enable "Show computer's administrators", or if I disabled "Show local users", the problem goes away.  The problem only exists when I have one or the other, but not both, options enabled.  So it seems there is a bug on the client, or there is a bug in the profile that Profile Manager is pushing to the client.
Another interesting tid bit.  I temporarily changed the local user on the client to an administrator.  That left the client with two administrators and no standard users.  The problem went away.  Turning that user back into a standard user, and the problem came back.
So there's one combination of options here that isn't working. In the long run I won't have any local users anyway, so it won't matter.  This only affects me now while I'm migrating things.

  • W32TM reverting to old settings.

Hi all, I have an issue which is driving me crazy and thought I would reach out to the experts.
I am trying to update the time sources on a few servers running 2008 SP2, however it continually reverts back.
    Scenario
    - Windows Server 2008 SP2
    - Not joined to any domain
    - No scripts running
    - w32tm currently configured to "192.168.14.89,192.168.14.90"
    - trying to configure to "192.168.22.161,192.168.22.162"
    Process
    - run CMD as administrator
    - run command "w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:192.168.22.161,192.168.22.162 /syncfromflags:manual"
    - restart w32tm
    - run command "w32tm /resync"
    - run command "w32tm /query /status" & confirm new time servers are listed
    - Check registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\W32Time\Parameters\Ntpserver" & confirm servers have updated
    Problem / Symptoms
    - Within 30 seconds of doing the above the w32tm service restarts and reverts the NTP server back to
    "192.168.14.89,192.168.14.90"
    - Event viewer shows no errors or warning. Just an information entry that the service has stopped and started
    So far I have tried
    - setting to a different time source
    - using "net time /setsntp:192.168.22.161,192.168.22.162"
    - unregistering and registering w32tm
    - rebooting
    - Can anyone offer any suggestions as to why it is restarting again and resetting the time servers?
    - Can anyone suggest where the information about the old time servers is being stored? (seeings as I have completely unregistered and registered w32tm and the settings are restored)
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Rob.

    Hi,
    So did you try command:
    w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:192.168.22.161,192.168.22.162 /syncfromflags:manual/update
    to check the result?

  • SAP ESO ext_login_page revert to old settings

    Hi All,
We did the configuration in SAP ESO directory configuration est_login_page. Now it's not showing ESO login page. how to revert back to original setings. How to go back to the ESO login page. Please provide the solution for this.
    Thank You,
    Phanikumar.

In the Setup --> Directory Configuration List, have you tried to inactivate the existing one? You can do that in the Usage dropdown option and click on "Inactive".
Then the original one can be made as Active-Buyside.

  • I downloaded a new version of WinZip. It highjacked my Firefox home page. I keep trying to get old settings back but there is all this stuff including Bing as home page. What do I do?

I have tried dragging and dropping MyYahoo into the home page and it resets to Bing every time I log back in.

    Hi Mnor,
You should take a look at the Knowledge Base article [[How to set the home page]]. Your homepage might have been changed by a particular site. Sites like MSN, Yahoo, etc (and it seems winzip) have been know to ask to become your homepage.
There are steps in that article to reset your homepage preferences to default. I would try that first to clear out any strangeness. If that works, you can try setting your homepage again to your personal preference.
If that doesn't work you should look at the article [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved Preferences not saved].
Finally, your issue may be because you've been hit with some [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Is%20my%20Firefox%20problem%20a%20result%20of%20malware?s=malware&r=0&e=sph&as=s#w_how-do-i-get-rid-of-malware Malware].

  • Lost file associations (Not the old version issue) Win 7 & CS5

Something corrupted my installation of CS5 a month or so ago after it had been working correctly and I lost all the image file associations. Photoshop worked fine but only if I directly opened files from within.  Also all the other image packages were missing from the file association list in the Windows 7 file associations tool, not just Photoshop.   Using the Windows tool to find the programmes dot exe file and create an association also locked up at the select the right package phase.
I have fixed this now and my reason for posting is that several previously suggested fixes in both the MS Windows fora and elsewhere on these Adobe forums were either very complicated requiring direct registry editing or didn't work.  It has taken me a while to find a work-around that worked, hence this post.
    1) Firstly - as is stated elesewhere the obvious answer of simply reinstalling Photoshop over the existing copy doesn't work!  Unfortunately it was a while before I found this out, with several time wasting retries of this as a fix attempt.
    2) Not saying this is guaranteed to work in every case but I ran a 3rd party free Registry Cleaner tool, this appears to have fixed the bug in the registry allowing the Windows 7 File Associations tool to work properly again.  Once that was fixed linking up each graphic type was simple.
Reason for posting is I wasted lots of time thinking the issue must have been a legacy from my earlier instal of a trial version of Master Suite or the older Photoshop 7 being replaced even though my CS5 edition had been working Ok for some time. because this is what is given as the usual cause.  However I think in my case it was after loading and then deleting other graphics software, possibly Real Player, which had grabbed the associations and corruped registry settings somehow at uninstall.  It appears registry cleaner restored the corruption and allowed the standard Win 7 tool to work again.
Hope this can help someone else.

First, let me say thanks to John for posting his experience here.  I think that Adobe does a poor job of managing file associations, given that we do hear of a lot of folks who see them get fouled up due to doing normal things like uninstalling earlier versions.
I'd like to ask, though:  Did you try using the Preferences - File Type Associations dialog in Bridge?
    Curt Y wrote:

A comment on "registry cleaners" in general:
I am a career computer "geek", and yes, Curt's right:  Registry cleaners in general are a terrible idea.  There are a few that encompass some valuable functionality such as deletion of old files from TEMP folders, but that's something one can do on one's own as well.
It's simply impossible for the programmer of a piece of software to know what information can be safely deleted from YOUR file system or YOUR Windows registry, which is a database.
Nor is it necessary to "clean" a registry regularly, as some say, to keep a system working well.  That's hype, propagated by the registry cleaner makers.  I use a system every day that's on the same installation of Windows 7 that first went in at the end of 2009.  It's stable and fast as ever.  I've even done several hardware upgrades and restored the same OS setup using system image backups just to keep the same fully configured, perfectly working system.
Ever hear people claim they have to reinstall Windows every so often?  One of the reasons could well be that they've used a registry cleaner.

  • File associations (always open with...) are constantly reverted

    Hi,
This sounds like a minor problem but is a major hassle on every workstation. We want to change file associations for all types like opening all .eps with illustrator instead of Preview.app and many others.
Our Workstations run Lion 10.7.1 and have Network Homes hosted on a Snow Leopard Server. Whenever the user changes the file associations (Get Info... dialogue) this change is reverted after a reboot. Strangely enough the new association is still in place if the user just logs out and back in again. There is no such problem with local users on the machines.
The com.apple.LaunchServices.plist where these settings are stored reflect changes made in the Get-Info dialogue. Upon reboot the Finder seems to ignore this settings file although it stays unchanged!
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

You should have used the unistaller rather than delete.
    Try this may work.
Start >> Control Panel >> Double-click Default Programs.
    Click Associate A File Type.
    Select .ai from the list.
    Click Change Program.
If your desired version of Illustrator is listed, choose, it. Otherwise, click Browse to locate it and click Open.
Ensure the "Always use the selected program..." option is selected. Click OK to close the Open With dialog box
If that dont work, use the Adobe unistaller, then reinstall.

  • Installing Mavericks & keeping iWork09 file association

I have ML/iWork 09 and I am installing Mavericks.  What's the best way to keep files associated with iWork 09?
The apps are in the /Applications/iWork09 so hopefully Mavericks will not overwrite them.  My plan is to either
    1. After installing Mavericks, go to a pages file and enter the full path to iWork09/Pages.app plus "change all"
    or
    2. Rename iWork09/Pages.app -> iWork09/Pages09.app and repeat 1.
I had similar problems with iLife when upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion (if I remeber correctly).  Turned out iPhoto09 and iPhoto11 easily coexisted but not the iMovies.  I could never use iMovie09 again. That's because of some details (app sigantures of imovie apps were identical I think).
Back to the new iWork, any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for advice, I will certainly not update.  I experimented with Numbers (which I do not use or need) and it created a mess.
I have CD-iWork 09. Used to get updates through Software Update, but only in Lion.  Apple orphaned CD-iWork 09 in ML.  The App Store - iWork 09 was considerd to be a separate program in ML, and I did not buy it. The button in the App Store said "buy $20" or so.  Thus there was no confusion which program was being updated, as there were no updates.
After installed Mavericks, there were NO Pages, Numbers, or Keynote in /Applications. Only the old ones in /Applications/iWork09.  However, the 3 programs showed up in App Store updates, with an "update" button next to them, but not under "purchases".  Also, I located them in the App Store, and the only option was "update", not "download".
So, unlike ML, Mavericks decided that AppStore-Numbers-3 is an update to CD-Numbers-2.3 and I am entitled to an update.  So I updated it.  But when I opened iWork09/Numbers.app, it was still 2.3.   However, the modified date changed to the download time.
So far, no complaints. It's actually good that it did not overwrite the old app. Maybe it just touched iWork09/Numbers.app to get things in sync.  Then I look again in the app store, and now it did say "download" next to Numbers.  This put Numbers-3 in /Applications.  Also, Numbers showed up in the App Store purchases.
So everything worked out fine? Not really. this is what I see in the App Store updates now. Keeps prompting me to update. Already did it once, it was happy for a while, only to come up with a new "update button".

  • Problems with Folder view settings and file association in Windows 8.1

My Windows 8.1 64 bit started forgetting the view settings from a folder. So if I go in a folder and I set it to List-View for example, whenever
I close that folder and I reopen it the view is set automatically to Details view. And this applies to every folder in my computer except Desktop. It drives me crazy, especially in my pictures folders.
Also with this problem another one came.I can't set a program to open some files,so the file associations for some files is broken. For example
i can't set qTorrent to open torrent files. It just won't open them and the files apear as white documents just like I hadn't had a Torrent program installed already.I find it weird that both problems appeared together.
I previously had to reinstall windows on my machine, because of this problems. It worked normal at the begging, but today these problems appeared
    again.
    I tried scanning SFC
    Scan with no result.
I hope I will get a fix here.
    Thanks.
Update:I also just discovered that Metro apps are not working...what the heck its wrong with my windows.

Hey thanks for the reply ,but I got a fix for everything.Apparently the problem is in the registry.
So If the problem began recently, you can try this to fix it :
Press Windows Key + R to show the Run box, type RSTRUI and press enter.
Choose a recent date and time from before the problem beginning (such as the day before yesterday) and click Next.
The system will restore registry settings from that day, and restart.
If you do this however, all the programs you had installed after the restore point date will
be DELETED   (same with any settings changes made before that date),so be sure to backup things.Hope this will help someone someday. .

  • How to revert file associations in Win8 back to CS6?

I have tried out CC. I am not convinced of its merits and worth the money, so I let the subscription end.No problem. I have CS6.
But how can I revert file associations for example for .PNG or .JPG files back to PS CS6, instead of PS CC? Everytime I change it in the Control Panel, it seemingly accepts it, but then PS comes up with the message that I need to renew my subscription. When I start PS CS6 and open the intended file, there is no problem at all, no subscription renewal message and it all works.
Can I only change that behaviour by uninstalling CC completely? That sucks, because if I ever change my mind and go for CC, I need to redownload all the software, which takes a lot of hours.

    How?
You can change them to Paint for instance, then change to PS CS6, but it still reverts to PS CC.
    Now change that to:
    and the result is:

  • Photoshop CC File Associations revert to CS6

Photoshop CC: PSD File Associations revert to CS6 in Finder>Get Info - Mac. File associations in Bridge manually updated and are working, but Finder still reverts to CS6 when changed in the Get Info window of a .psd file.

I was having this same issue and I fixed it but I'm not exactly sure what did it... I'm using Snow Leopard on a Mac and I have cs5, cs6 and CC installed. Initally after installing CC, I was able to associate files using the normal "open with" and "change all" dialog. However, after installing a Mac security update today, the "open with" reverted to CS6 and when trying to change all to open with Photoshop CC, it would just revert to CS6. Here's what I did today before I was able to change them all back to CC.
    1. Installed Photohop CC Update
    2. Restarted Computer
    3. Changed *one* file to open with CC and closed the dialog
    4. Installed PHotoshop CS6 Update
    5. Opened that "one file" (which still had open with Photoshop CC selected) and hit "change all"
Magic. Not sure what did it... but maybe if you repeat that process, it will work for you.

You're welcome, and thank you for the reply.
    2) Yesterday I made the subclips with the In-Out Points and Command-U, the benefit is that I've seen the clip before naming it. Now I'm using markers, it's benefit is that I can write comment and (the later) clip name at once, the drawback is that I have to view to the next shot's beginning before knowing what the shot contains.
But now I found out that I can reconnect my clips independently to the format I converted the master clip to. I reconnected the media to the original AVI file and it worked, too! The more I work with, the more I'm sold on it... - although it doesn't seem to be able to read and use the date information within the DV AVI.
    1) Ok, I tried something similar within FCE. Just worked, but the file size still remains. Which codec settings should I use? Is the export to DV in MOV with a quality of 75% acceptable for both file size and quality? Or would be encoding as H.264 with best quality an option for archiving, knowing that I have to convert it back to DV if I (maybe) wan't to use it for editing later? Or anything else?
    Thank's in advance again,

  • File Association Settings Ignored

    Hello.
I'm afraid I'm not too happy about this problem. I've been using iTunes recently as my media player. I do quite like iTunes, however, I'm not too happy that QuickTime must be installed in order for it to function.
Since installing iTunes/QuickTime, my file association preferences for online audio files have been ignored. When I click a link to an MP3 file online, I still want Firefox to prompt me to either open the file in Windows Media Player or save it to my computer. However, clicking the link simply loads a new tab in which QuickTime attempts to play the file.
Windows Media Player is set as my default player for MP3 files. QuickTime is set NOT to play MP3 files in both the "File Types" tab and the "MIME Types" window on the "Browser" tab of the plugin.
I have been trying to fix this problem for days and I am sick and tired of it. Searching around the web, I've found many people who seem to have the same problem as I do, although I'm yet to find any kind of working solution. I'm hoping someone here can provide me with a working solution, otherwise I will have no alternative other than to uninstall both QuickTime and iTunes.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try this, right click on a MP3 that you have on the HD and go to properties. Next to Opens with: click on Change and select another player to handle them. Also go to the settings of Firefox,-tools>options>downloads>plug-ins to see what is enabled in there to handle MP3's

  • File association reverting itself on its own

I have been unable to change the file association for .bib files. I would like to open all of these with JabRef (default is texmaker). I selected one, did cmd-I, went to the "open with" tab, looked for JabRef, selected "all applications" from the drop-down menu (JabRef is not a "recommended application"), selected JabRef. I then pressed the button "Change all" to change all of the .bib files and the file association reverted itself to texmaker!
What could be the reason for this behaviour? I made sure that the file was unlocked before trying to change its association after it failed the first time, but b/c I did not know what else to do, in fact it seems irrelevant. Any suggestions?
