File association reverting itself on its own

I have been unable to change the file association for .bib files. I would like to open all of these with JabRef (default is texmaker). I selected one, did cmd-I, went to the "open with" tab, looked for JabRef, selected "all applications" from the drop-down menu (JabRef is not a "recommended application"), selected JabRef. I then pressed the button "Change all" to change all of the .bib files and the file association reverted itself to texmaker!
What could be the reason for this behaviour? I made sure that the file was unlocked before trying to change its association after it failed the first time, but b/c I did not know what else to do, in fact it seems irrelevant. Any suggestions?

Could be a hosed LaunchServices database. Best thing to do is reset it. Launch the Terminal.app in /Applications/Utilities/, paste in the below command, hit the return key, quit the app, and restart.
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*
I did it, but there is no effect. Just to make sure, what is that you mean exactly by quit the app? Quit the Terminal? In any case thanks a lot for the suggestion.
Besides, I have circumvented the problem by associating bib files with BibDesk, although it is a bit annoying that the file association seems to ahve a glitch.

Photoshop CC: PSD File Associations revert to CS6 in Finder>Get Info - Mac. File associations in Bridge manually updated and are working, but Finder still reverts to CS6 when changed in the Get Info window of a .psd file.

I was having this same issue and I fixed it but I'm not exactly sure what did it... I'm using Snow Leopard on a Mac and I have cs5, cs6 and CC installed. Initally after installing CC, I was able to associate files using the normal "open with" and "change all" dialog. However, after installing a Mac security update today, the "open with" reverted to CS6 and when trying to change all to open with Photoshop CC, it would just revert to CS6. Here's what I did today before I was able to change them all back to CC.
    1. Installed Photohop CC Update
    2. Restarted Computer
    3. Changed *one* file to open with CC and closed the dialog
    4. Installed PHotoshop CS6 Update
    5. Opened that "one file" (which still had open with Photoshop CC selected) and hit "change all"
Magic. Not sure what did it... but maybe if you repeat that process, it will work for you.

If you bought a new iPhone, it is covered under warranty.  There's nothing to get, it simply is covered.

I have AT&T so I need to post here instead of actually being held to get help on a Sunday night. this is a extremely frustrating situation as I count on this phone for business.

Are you restoring your phone from a previous back up? If so there could be a problem within the back up. Try restoring your phone as a new device and then manualy reinstall all apps.

Reinstall OS X and start doing some basic maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack (not compatible with Snow Leopard.) If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)

  • Flash uninstalls itself on its own

I have 1 computer that keeps uninstalling Flash.  The PC is Win XP SP3 32bit running IE8.  I thought it might have been McAfee but there is nothing in the logs saying McAfee thinks its a virus or spyware.  Add/Remove programs does not list Flash but the Flash icon in the Control Panel is still there.  This happens randomly, sometimes once a week, sometimes once every other week.  Any thoughts or input on this would be great.  Thanks

Here is the log, I wanted to wait until it removed itself again, which it did this morning.  I'm having this issue on 2 PCs and I spoke with those users.  They both got an update message and ran it.  After they ran it, Flash is not there.  We do not allow our users to have admin rights, so what I'm thinking is that somehow the update process is removing the older version, then when it tries to install, it can't.  Here's the contents of the log from today.

  • Problems editing with iPhoto 6 - modified file has a mind of its own. Help!

I have been working through info posted re difficulties storing edits. My modified file (once I eventually found it) appears to simply duplicate originals. Recent attempts show that edits are now being stored as ThumbJPGSegment data. Attempts to open these show 'unreadable file'. 'Could not be imported as the file is in the iPhoto library folder'. What on earth does this mean, and am I doing wrong? I have wasted a day trying to sort this out.
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iLife 06

    Posey:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The library6.iPhoto file is just the database that keeps track of the photos, edits, books, etc. that is in the library. You edited version of that photo will be located in the Modified folder's subfolder for the roll that the photo is in. The thumbs file is the thumbnail version data base. Those are all library overhead files.
As PhillyPhan warned: Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder. We can emphasize that too much.
If you're doing sharpening it's a know issues that it's nearly impossible to see the effects of sharpening unless you in the separate edit window and viewing at 100%. Otherwise the antialiasing that iPhoto does on the images will smooth out the sharpening that you've applied. If it's other types of edits, i.e. crops, red eye removal then find one of the files you've done that to in the Modified folder and open it with Preview or drag into an open Safari window to view the photo and see if the edit was actually saved.

  • How to change Windows 7 file associations in the registry

    Hi,
I have a group of computers that have Office 2010 installed and then PowerPoint Viewer 2007 was installed after that to temporarily resolve an SCCM 2007 patching issue. Needless to say, PowerPoint Viewer 2007 changed some of the PowerPoint 2010 file associations
to itself instead. I am scripting a clean-up operation to remove PowerPoint Viewer 2007 and set the file associations back to PowerPoint 2010. After doing some research, the few registry paths commonly called out do not contain the information that I am looking
    to change.
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts
The file associations that I need to set back to PowerPoint 2010 are as follows:
.potm, .potx, .ppsm, .ppsx, .pptm, .pptx
Does anybody know where to look for where these file associations are set in the registry?
    Thanks,
    Rob

This is how it is done in vbscript as well:
    http://www.visualbasicscript.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=97211&mpage=1#97217
    Set objShell = Wscript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
    objShell.RegWrite "HKCR\.potm\", "PowerPoint.TemplateMacroEnabled.12", "REG_SZ"
    objShell.RegWrite "HKCR\.potx\", "PowerPoint.Template.12", "REG_SZ"
    objShell.RegWrite "HKCR\.ppsm\", "PowerPoint.SlideShowMacroEnabled.12", "REG_SZ"
    objShell.RegWrite "HKCR\.ppsx\", "PowerPoint.SlideShow.12", "REG_SZ"
    objShell.RegWrite "HKCR\.pptm\", "PowerPoint.ShowMacroEnabled.12", "REG_SZ"
    objShell.RegWrite "HKCR\.pptx\", "PowerPoint.Show.12", "REG_SZ"
One thing to note is that the user will need to log out and log in again to reload the changes to the registry which also updates the change to the file extensions.

  • Droid mini shuts down on its own

Since updating Android about a week ago, my droid mini has shut down on its own at random times. Pressing the power button won't start it up either. I have to continually press for over a minute before the phone powers up. Battery is over 70% so that shouldn't be the issue.
Thanks for any ideas on how to cure this!

I would suggest trying running the device in safe mode. There may be one of your 3rd party apps that are interfering somehow with the proper functioning of your device, and safe mode will disable them for diagnostic purposes. If running safe mode improves the phone's performance, one of a couple things may happen. Your phone may "fix itself", correcting its own glitch now that there is no interference from a problem app, or it may just run better while in safe mode. You'll have to restart again as normal to determine which one it is. If it goes back to glitching, then you will need to go back into safe mode, remove all 3rd party apps, and then add them again one by one to determine which one was the problem.

  • Bridge doesn't recognize its own .xmp files

Using Bridge CS3 on Mac OS 10.5.8. I edit RAW (.nef) files in ACR. When I click done, save, or open image, an .xmp sidecar file is generated and saved in the same folder as the .nef. However, changes made in ACR do not show in the preview thumbnail in Bridge, and when I re-open the file in ACR, my changes are lost. The .xmp file is still there, it's just not applied. It's like Bridge doesn't know the .xmp file is there. The icons in Bridge indicating altered develop settings or crops do not appear after adjudstments are made. Star ratings made in Bridge remain. When this issue began, it would ignore sidecar files for some images, but not others. It is increasing in frequency, or may now be consistent. (If I open the file into Photoshop or save an image file out of ACR, the changes are applied to the developed image file, they are simply ignored by Bridge in regards to the Raw file.)
Files that were adjusted before the problem began still synchronize with their sidecar files. Looking at the sidecar files in a text editor shows that they contain the adjustments made.
There were no changes in any installations/updates to software or OS at the time of the problem's onset.
I've tried using a Camera Raw database instead of sidecar files, and the changes are still lost. I've tried purging caches for Bridge and for ACR. I've tried resetting and dumping preference (.plist) files.
Anyone have ideas on what I can do to salvage this program as my RAW library manager?

    Matthew,
Same problem here. But I'm using CS5 in Win7.
Bridge cannot find its XMP files. Bridge does not see its XMP files. XMP files do not work. Camera Raw settings do not show in thumbnails. ACR settings lost.
I just now figured out the problem/solution.
In my case, the association between CR2 files and Bridge was usurped by Canon DPP (the Canon raw converter) which I just installed this afternoon. When I installed it, there was no immediate problem. But when I started a new work session tonight, Bridge acted as if the XMP files weren't even there.
Solution: In Windows, to set a file association, you just right-click on a file (in this case the CR2 file) and select "Open With", and then navigate to Bridge (in my case Bridge CS5). That re-establishes the link between Bridge and its own XMP files. Then simply purge your cache and let Bridge rebuild it using its XMPs (which it can now find again) to rebuild the cache with the adjustments that are stored in the XMPs.
I don't know how to do this on a Mac, but the principle is the same.
I hope this solves your problem.
    Dave

  • How to revert file associations in Win8 back to CS6?

I have tried out CC. I am not convinced of its merits and worth the money, so I let the subscription end.No problem. I have CS6.
But how can I revert file associations for example for .PNG or .JPG files back to PS CS6, instead of PS CC? Everytime I change it in the Control Panel, it seemingly accepts it, but then PS comes up with the message that I need to renew my subscription. When I start PS CS6 and open the intended file, there is no problem at all, no subscription renewal message and it all works.
Can I only change that behaviour by uninstalling CC completely? That sucks, because if I ever change my mind and go for CC, I need to redownload all the software, which takes a lot of hours.

    How?
You can change them to Paint for instance, then change to PS CS6, but it still reverts to PS CC.
    Now change that to:
