"File Being Used by MAC OS X..." HUH!!?

I had some .zip (created using the OSX Archive utility) files sent to my server from an outside client via AFP and when trying to open them it comes up with the following error: "Item <insert filename.zip here> is being used by MAC OS X and cannot be opened." What's that all about?
If I try to copy from the server to a local client via AFP I get the following error: "You may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named <filename.zip>". If I enter a password, it copies the file but then the file will disappear like it's supposed to be a hidden system file. What's up??? Any ideas?
Also.. server is running 10.3.9 and local clients are on 10.3.4.
G5/1.8dp   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Ok, so I tried unzipping with Terminal and I get the following response:
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
I know this is not the case in regards to the file. Help.

  • MP3 files being used by MAC OS X and cannot be opened?

I'm setting up my play lists in ITunes 7.0.2 on my Macbook and I started realizing a few songs where missing. The MP3 files are in my music folder but do not show up in ITunes. When I click on the in the music directory it gives me the following message in a pop up.
Item "name of song.MP3" is being used by MAC OS X and cannot be open.
Any clue what is going on? It's happened on several different songs so far. Thanks

I recopied the bad files from my network backup drive and all seems well but I still don't understand why The system told me it was using the files.

  • 1. Cd wont eject, tried everything. 2 Item is being used by Mac osx.

Just before my cd refused to eject I ended up with two folders that have what I would call a biohazard logo on them (Three evenly parted triangles with all the points in the center). The cd that's stuck can be ejected from the desktop n finder, but won't dislodge from computer. So the computer thinks I keep putting it back in. There's another file with the same name as the cd in the tray. That item is apparently being used by Mac osx, and I can't do anything with it. This is all quite bizarre. Everything else works like lightning (downloads, apps, uploads etc.)

  • Can't get shuffle to update says files being used

i cant update says files being used by other application,i just bought this there is no other application being used.im about to return it

If you have some utility that runs in the background and monitors mounted volumes, such as anti-malware software, you may want to disable it while doing the update.  Or, if you can set it to ignore the iPod's "disk" (not monitor it), that may work.
Restart your computer.  Immediately run iTunes and connect the shuffle.  Try to do the update again.
In case that does not work, do you use a Mac or Windows?  If it's Windows, what version?

  • How do you determine file being used in DVD map?

    Hi
On older idvd projects I sometimes want to check what version of a movie file it is using. I can't figure out how to reveal the information. Specifically, I'm looking for exact name of file being used and its location.
    Thank you for your help
    Phil

You can find that information from within the iDVD project. Open the iDVD project in question. Under the menu bar, select Project Info. You will then see a screen containing information about that project. There is a screen showing all the Media used, with the path to each movie, audio, or photo used in the project. The path begins with the drive on which the movie is located and then each folder/file.
By the way, you do know that an iDVD project is like an alias collection. The actual media are not stored within the project, only information pointing to the actual media files. When you burn a DVD, iDVD gathers the media files temporarily for the burn.
If you rename, move, change or delete any media used within a project, iDVD will be unable to locate the files and will not open properly. Many people have mistakenly saved only an iDVD project, deleting the original iMovies used in it, and have been sadly disappointed to find that the iDVD project no longer has the movie files.
If you wish to save drive space but save your iDVD projects for burning later, you should create a disk image file by doing 'save as disc image' from within your iDVD project. This process looks just like a burn, and the encoding takes just as long, but the end result is a disk image file, not a burned DVD disk. The disk image file is self-contained; that is, all the media files used in the project are encoded into the disk image file. So now you have a disk image file of your project that can be saved, moved, used to burn DVD disks at any time.
You can safely delete the original iMovie project and the original iDVD project without losing the capability of burning more DVDs of the project.
I have disk image files of all the iDVD projects I have made. I store them on external drives as backups.

  • OUI patch install hangs, files being used by another application

Hi when a patch install hangs, and the OUI error message is that files needing to be reinstalled are being used by another application, how can you identify which files or processes are responsible so that they can be shut down? All normal Oracle services and DTC are shut down already.
This is patch 6810189 upgrade to 10.2.0.4 (from 10.2.0.3) which includes the April CPU on a Win32 server.

Please check any oracle service is still on ..
need to shutdown listener/oracle service .. and other db service belongs to Oracle.
You can download windows process explorer and check for any oracle process and kill those and then apply CPU

  • Cannot disconnect iPod - files being used by another application

This is the first time I've connected my new iPod to my brand new computer(Dell E510 loaded). I've been able to down load some albums, and it has been charging (via usb port on tower) for 8 hours. When I try to eject the iPod via itunes I get the error. " iPod can not be disconnected since some of its files are being used by another application. Try again later" I don't have any other applications running. Since this if the 1st time I'm using it, I'm hesitant to follow any of the R procedures. So I close iTunes and open it again. Sometimes it recognizes the iPod and doesn't other times. Thanks for any input

I don't have McAfee and this happens to me as well (every single time since I got the 5th Gen Ipod last month).
I have been clicking on the "safely remove hardware" icon in the toolbar, and manually disconnecting it that way. It seems to work alright.
The annoying thing is that this is only an issue with my 5th gen Ipod. My Ipod Mini has never had any trouble disconnecting the normal way.

  • Failing capture - file being used by another process.

    Hi there.
So i have a IBM system x 3550 m4 booting from SAN Windows server 2012.
I'm trying to capture an image using MDT 2012 installed on windows server 2008 r2.
The first try to capture failed because of lack of proper network driver in WinPE. So i've managed to boot again in the system (the PE after restart was giving me a 0xc000000f bsod). I've put drivers into boot image and started a second attempt to capture.
There was a strange thing: the process was stuck very long on bcdedit sub-tasks (as were lagging the interactive bcdedit calls i've tried to do from command line). But nevertheless it managed to reboot and almost finished capturing but crashed at 83% with

  • Can't open or move file - In use by Mac OS X

I have a file (movie) I am trying to move to a new external hard drive. I can't move it cause it says it is used by Mac OS X and cannot be moved or if I try to open it says it can't be opened.
The permissions are set correctly on this file and it plays just fine in iTunes but I can't open it in quicktime or I get that message. Anyone have any ideas to try? The Locked check box is not checked in the info window and my user has read and write access to the file.

Well I will never know what happened with that file. I tried moving it again and got the error message again. Got another message after that saying do you want to continue to move items you can move (though this was the only file I was trying) I said continue and then the file disappeared off my system.
No idea what happened with it.....

    Hi everyone,
I have several flash animations (.swf) being used in a captivate 5 project. I need to use these .swfs in another project but unfortunately the source files seem to be lost. Is there a way to export them from captivate somehow?

    Hello!
Thank you for posting on forums.
Please find those animations in library and then do right click to get the export option.
    See if that helps you.

  • How to make the stage transparent for SWF file being used in Dreamweaver

I have a SWF file in my Dreamweaver site, that plays correctly. The problem is that the stage is white and we would like it to be transparent. Searching the archives the following advice was given:
in your html embedding code you need to set the wmode parameter to be "transparent"
I'm wondering if this is the code in Dreamweaver or is this done in Flash. I'm working with CS5. Below is the code that matches the SWF file in Dreamweaver. I did change the wmode value from "opaque" to "transparent" and it didn't work.

Yes, change this to "transparent" in ALL the places where wmode is shown
    <param name="wmode" value="opaque" />
Second, be sure that there is in fact nothing covering the entire stage, like a big white rectangle.
Also, what is directly behind the .swf once it's on the Web page? If the background color of that page or the <div> that the .swf is in is white..... well then then .swf can have a transparent background but then the white from the Web page just shows thru.... so there's still a white background.
Be sure there is a non-white background on the Web page...
Window Mode (wmode) - What's It For?
    There are three window modes.
    Window
    Opaque
    Transparent
By default, the Flash Player gets its own hWnd in Windows. This means that the Flash movie actually exists in a display instance within Windows that lives above the core browser display window. So though it appears to be in the browser window, technically, it isn't. It is most efficient for Flash to draw this way and this is the fastest, most efficient rendering mode. However, it is drawing independently of the browser's HTML rendering surface. This is why this default mode (which is equivalent to wmode="window") doesn't allow proper compositing with DHTML layers. This is why your JavaScripted drop-down menus will drop behind your Flash movie.
In windowless modes (like opaque), Flash Player doesn't have a hWnd. This means that the browser tells the Flash Player when and where to draw onto the browser's own rendering surface. The Flash movie is no longer being rendered on a higher level if you will. It's right there in the page with the rest of the page elements. The Flash buffer is simply drawn into whatever rectangle the browser says, with any Flash stage space not occupied by objects receiving the movie's background color.

  • Which format on a flash drive for large files for use by Mac and PC

I need to copy large files (9GB of movie file exported from iMovie of school graduation) onto 16GB flash drives so they can be used by school parents who may have Mac, PC or even TV.
My first attempt says the files are too large.
A lot of googling tells me this is a recognised problem but I am confursed by which advice to take.
I am on a 2012 iMac running OSX version 10.7.4.
Do I need to download some software to run NTFS.  It all sounds so confusing!
I ended up in this predicament because the quality of my photo slideshows I copied to my DVD-R was so bad.  Thought a flash drive would be easy. Ha, not at all.
Please answer in laymans terms - I could barely follow some of the advice I found.....

Format the flash drives with Disk Utility in ExFAT format.

  • Anybody have a resolution for PRIAMOS file download using a Mac OSX 10.6.8 and Adobe Reader XI?

Does anyone have experience of the EU PRIAMOS file download system? I am experiencing difficulties in downloading files in Adobe Reader format ( I have set the default PDF reader to Adobe Reader).
The PRIAMOS system can only communicate with Windows 32bit - Mozilla Firefox 2 and higher or......
    IE 6 or 7
IE 7 or 8 (in compatibility mode)
    Supported PDF programmes are:
    Adobe Reader 8.1 or higher
My Adobe Reader software is the latest version (Adobe Reader XI for Mac with latest update as at 10 Sept 2013)
The PRIAMOS system does not officially support Mac computers, but PRIAMOS has been used successfully with OS X version 10.5.8 (Leopard) and Mozilla Firefox (2.5) (with built in PDF reader disabled and Adobe Reader enabled) and Adobe Reader 8.1
Any help would be gratefully appreciated

Oops, I hit return before I was finished!
In short, does anyone have any ideas apart from those I've tried. One solution seems to be to go back to 10.6.4 - one of the other discussions seem to indicate that the probelm comes in with 10.6.8.

What I'm thinking (just in case you haven't tried this) is that you could do a Get Info on this file and then use the "open with" dialogue to assign (or re-assign) the proper application for opening that file and all other video files with that file extension.
Just a chance that might correct the System ownership issue.
Other than that, the only alternative I can think of is to log in as Root User and go from there. I think you would then be able to play the video but you won't want to stay on as Root User - that's for certain.
While logged on as Root User, you might again try changing permissions or even try using a video conversion app to change the video file to a new format - and then rename and apply permissions.
I think the real probability isn't going to please you: I think this file is corrupted and if it's the only copy you have, it's "junk." But the above experiment would likely prove that either way.
