File Bloat - Give me your feedback

Hey guys, I submitted a wish form as follows:

How would you like the feature to work?
Captivate files tend to suffer from bloat, and when they start to get to big the only solution is to copy and paste all your slides into a new blank project. Unfortunately this breaks any links that you might have in your project. Some kind of tool that can go in an get rid of all unused internal resources that are bloating the file so you don't need to copy and paste.
Why is this feature important to you?
It will stop the many many questions in the Captivate forum on how to fix the problem, and we won't have to fix all our links every time we need to cut and paste.

Can you give the following info to help us look into the problem:
1. Is the bloated project upgraded from Captivate 3 (or is it a new project created in Captivate 4) ? Have you ever faced the project bloating issue in Captivat4-only project (not the ones upgraded) ?
2. Did you try removing un-used items from the library ?
3. Will it be possible for you to share the project file (.cp)? - The bloated project file (which will give us a clear picture of the problem).

If you've ever been upset by file bloat... lay it on me and see if we can get it fixed (does it still do it in Cap 4?)

File bloat has been a recurring issue for Forum members (since RoboDemo?). I have to say I don't have a problem because I design the training so each Captivate project rarely has more than 30 finished slides, and I clean out unused library items often.
In the past, a solution has been to save the file as a different name then close and reopen (vs. copying and pasting and losing links). Another strategy has been to publish often. That seems to clear bloat in some cases.
It's clear that Captivate is a processor hog, and as we clamor for more features, THAT probably won't go away. Maybe we could benefit from a 'designing for (or around?) Captivate' Forum division? Most of the training I see (and the underlying Captivate metaphor?) assumes we all create tidy one-file projects. I think real-world projects are much larger and messier. Hence the bloat. --Leslie

I had sent you information back on 02/29/2008 as a reply to this thread but it must have got deleted.
Here is the thread from that day.
I finally got this to work in my 11g database with Database Vault.
I got to the ILM login page when I exchanged p=4550:10:2805095104274743
for p=737677:10:2805095104274743.
i.e.
http://oraprod-dr.lodgian.com:8080/apex/f?p=737677:10:2805095104274743
The documentation for logging into ILM 1.2 seems to be not quite accurate.
What I saw on that page were 2 boxes:
1. Database User
2. Password
So you actually need to login with a "database" user account.
Initially I logged in as "SYS" just to see what would happen.
Then I was able to see the ILM tabs and menus.
I then went into OEM and created a new database user "ILM_DB_ADMIN".
I followed the instructions for executing the grant_privs.sql script to that newly created database account.
I was then able to login with that database account.
Now the url http://oraprod-dr.lodgian.com:8080/apex/f?p=737677 immediately refers to the ILM login page.
I would not think that this is a "backdoor" login method into ILM since the documentation does mention that you must use a "database" account.

However:
First of all we would like to know on the future direction of iFS.
Will it be developed further? A whitepaper from Februaray scheduled a new release for June.
Where is it? Will it come?
Our company relies heavily on iFS as a development platform. The API is appealing, which is not necessarily true for the protocol stack. Especially the WebUI. Should our decision have been wrong?!
Our feature wish list comes right here:
1) Better documentation, especiallay the javadocs
2) LDAP credential manager (not only OID please - I know nobody who succesfully got OID running on LINUX)
3) Redesign of the search API - ever tried to search for the MIMETYPE of a document ?
4) transparent integration with XML-Db, a XML-Mimetype would do
5) optional audit functionality, trashbin - we are currently dumping daily to a native filesystem for backup purposes, to prevent a database restore on user mistake - not very elegant
6) optional storage of the context converted documents for low bandwidth preview functionality would be nifty
7) workflow functionality (we can provide this, just ask ;-)))
8) upgrade to JDK 1.4 would be nice (it already works, but should be recompiled)

7.0 and your feedback on the new chat UI

Totaly agree that it would also be nice to be able to hide the useless "Home" and "Call phones" buttons on the contact list.It can be a part of a "compact list" mode or as a separate option. I never use them.

Compact sidebar: Some of you asked us to see more contacts and conversation in the left hand sidebar. Enable the option "Compact Sidebar View" from the "View" menu for a more compact layout.
Compact Chat View: If you can live without your chat message having some whitespace around them to give them room to breathe you can now increase your "message per inch" ratio drastically by activating "Compact Chat view" in Skype Options - "IM & SMS" - Advanced settings. Also don't miss out on the other available tweaks to the UI we wrote about earlier.

Disabling chat formatting: Especially role players using Skype have shared that they'd prefer the new text formatting options introduced in 6.22 to not apply to their IMs. This formatting is based on the use of wrapping parts of the message in characters like *, _ or ~. You can disable this permanently for all of your chats, by sending the following chat command to any of your chats:
/setupkey *Lib/Conversation/EnableWiki 0
To enable the formatting again please use this command:
/setupkey *Lib/Conversation/EnableWiki 1
This setting doesn't seem to stick reliably in 7.0 over restarts of the app. Skype is looking into this.
Please give the new 7.0 version a spin and customize Skype layout and design closer to your liking. We are looking forward for your feedback.

gives more power to consumersSounds like you're still trying to market it. I think that you can't really interest people (and create a good viral "word of mouth") by keeping everything so closed. I understand that you are afraid of being ripped off by the competition, but if you're always one step ahead of them, it doesn't matter that they copy your old features, as long as you're constantly producing new ones.
I'm looking at the screenshot on the site and what exactly am i seeing? Pixels and lines? It doesn't really make me want to download and try it out. And these days, if one look doesn't stop the casual browsing user, than he's gone.
What i'm trying to say is - don't be afraid to put fully functioning demo on your site and all the best screenshots (in the original resolution) that you have.

I have a strange problem connecting one of the office laptops (Macbook Pro 10.7) to the disk in the Apple Time Capsule. It's just one laptop that has this problem and the other 3 no problems at all and they all run OS X 10.7 Lion, I can access the Time Capsule disk over WAN on all machines but locally on the problem machine i get this message "There was a problem connecting to the server "myserver.local" this file is available on your computer. Access the files and volumes locally." Now from this message it sounds like the problem laptop thinks the network drive (Time Capsule) is the same as it's self in the way of name or address however they clearly have different IP addresses locally.
Any ideas on this would be apreciated as I can only think a clean install but don't want to do this if not necessary.

I think I gave you some bad info in the above, where i enterered the text "myserver.local" & "example.local" this was the host name of the server (Time Capsule) so not local on the computer.
No i didn't try your method, I'll give it a go - I thought the folder option was for local files and not on a server ?

Save the file and give date & time stamp

1. Reading the Excel file from the selection screen as a parameter.
2. Using F.M. ALSM_EXCEL_TO_INTERNAL_TABLE reading Excel file into
    Internal table.
3. Implementing the Business Logic.
4. Move output to Final Internal table.
5. Final internal table should generate a Flat file. By using GUI_DOWNLOAD.
6. That flat file should be saved with the name and location given in the Excel.
7. When ever I run the program output file will generate in the same location but with date and time stamp. Because Im running the program for range of employees say initially I run for 1 10,000 employees next 10,001- 20,000 like that.
Whenever I run for 2nd time it will overwrite the previous output, thats the reason Im using date and time stamp.
Eg:

I am not clear with your problem. Based on the understanding of your question,
there can be two cases.
1- U want to insert time stamp in the output file.
2- Time stamp is already there, u just have to solve the overwriting issue.
If your question goes with option 2, You can make use of import parameters
<b>CONFIRM_OVERWRITE</b> : Which will ask for confirmation before overwriting.
<b>APPEND</b> : which you can choose either to append the data to the existing file or overwrite it.
Please inform if the issue is not resolved.

Your Feedback please on GUI design/development

I am doing some research on GUI development in java and I would
like your feedback on a few things:
(1) Do you consider GUI development in java complex and
time consuming(more than what it should be)?
(2) How satisfied are you with existing tools(IDEs like
Visual Cafe,JBuilder or any other ones) for developing
GUIs?
(3) If the answer to question 2 is no, do you think a tool
that would offer a level of abstraction between the
design process and the actual swing API thus providing
the ability to design GUIs in a fast and easy way, would
be a useful addition to java? (Consider Visual Basic as
an example for fast & simple GUI development)

I've been handrolling GUIs for over 10 years (first in X/Athena/Motif)
and now Java.
I have never found a builder that lets you get exactly what you want
plus I've always found the source they generate to be rubbish (ie
you can't modifiy it to do exactly what you want)
If there was a tool that did give me complete access to do everything
I wanted plus produced usable/reusable source code - would I use it ?
I'd probably try it and see if it was faster than doing it by hand, if
yes then I would certainly use it.
I don't honestly think a builder will ever be a complete replacement
for a GUI developer though.
Last (silly) point: Is there an Athena L&F for Java ? - not that I want
one, purely interested to know if there is one !

PDF file bloat: CC 2014

Is anyone noticing a huge file bloat in the size of the PDFs created from Indesign CC 2014? Practically all of the PDFs I create are 10 to 20x larger than a similar file created under CS6. I have to open every one in Acrobat and Optimize. Quite frustrating, as all of my PDF settings are imported from the previous version.

I think that there are really two issues here.
I'll attack the second one first. You didn't say which version of Acrobat you are using, but if you have any version of Acrobat prior to Acrobat 11, fully updated, and are on a HiDPI Mac (i.e., the so-called Retina screens), that messy display of Audit Space Usage may be due to that. It has nothing to do with the content of your PDF file.
However, what is interesting is that the Audit Space Usage shows the category Document Overhead with nearly 86% of the file space. What Document Overhead represents is a combination of document metadata and private data from other applications (including the private data from Illustrator when you place .AI files or .PDF files from Illustrator in which you did not disable the save editability feature). The document metadata can include XMP data in placed images but the major component of that metadata is XMP metadata that InDesign adds to your document every time you open and edit your document. When you do a simple save of your document, new metadata gets appended. And all that metadata is exported when you export PDF. When you invoked the PDF optimizer in Acrobat, what really slimmed down your PDF file was the option Discard document information and metadata!
Solution without having to invoke Acrobat's optimization feature?
Try saving your InDesign documents using Save as as opposed to simple Save. That should strip out much of the metadata. If that doesn't clean it up significantly, try saving as .IDML and then opening the .IDML file and resaving as .INDD.
By the way, this issue is nothing new to InDesign 10. It is actually less problematic in recent versions than in previous ones.

Which log file will give the info about what is missing in sales document

I am trying to send a quote from our application to get saved in SAP using .Net Connector. I get the following error messages
S V4 233 SALES_HEADER_IN has been processed successfully
S V4 233 SALES_ITEM_IN has been processed successfully
W V1 555 The sales document is not yet complete: Edit data
I am looking for any kind of incompletion log that will give more info about what is missing etc.,
Where can I find such a log. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Just check this path.
Go to sales order->Edit->Incompletion log.
This tells your docuement status. If at all your document is incomplete,you can just see what all you are missing.

There are some mistakes in your procedure
1) you are passing the object verison number to the api from the per_all_people_f which should not be the case. you need to pass from the per_all_assignments_f object version number as your updating assignment screen not people screen.
2) Use the Date track mode as Update , so that old superviosr data or any record will be end dated and new record will be created.
3) In exception it is always advisable to write dbms_output.put_line(SQLERRM). so that it will give u the exact error if any occurs during execution of program.
there is no table with per_assignments_x , use the table per_all_assignments_f which is a date track table for assignments

Just for the record:
I had received the error message "An error occurred while uploading one of your files. Please check your network connection and click Retry to resend your file" after all data apparently had been uploaded.
After trying everything recommended on the internet, I finally found the culprit: Glimmerblocker, an ad blocker!
(GlimmerBlocker version 1.4.16, Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion)
Actually, the credit goes to the very patient German Apple support: they had finally asked me: "what software have you installed lately" ... a big applause to the guys there!

In our case, it was not third party software, but a problem with our router not accepting pings. If you are using a router be sure to set-up Enable WAN Ping Respond, in the advanced settings. I reviewed my wireless router's logs and found that it was blocking ICMP Type 3 packets from Apple's server. As a result, it would give the message, "An error occurred while uploading one of your files. Please check your network connection and click Retry to resend your file." You can find the blocked packets in your log based on the time you clicked the buy button for your iPhoto purchase (in my case about a dozen times). If your packets are blocked, then that is your problem.
I should have suspected it was the connection since the message plainly said, "...check your network connection...". However, I discounted this along with so many others based on the forums, since I could connect to the internet. If there only was a way the message could have gave a little more saying, "Enable your WAN Ping Respond now, or else!"

File Bloat Saving to .eps

Adobe Illustrator CS3
I have an Illustrator (.ai) file that is 1.4 MB. My vendor requires that I submit an .eps file. When I save the file as an Illustrator .eps file, the file size grows to 10.9 MB. I have run the action to delete unused panels and save the file without a preview. The file reduced to 10.7 MB. Any idea what's causing the file bloat? How to reduce? The file is outlined text in black and one pms colored box. No graphics at all. No complex lines.

David - is the AI file 1:1 with the .EPS?
I have an AI file with a block of live text = 628K - EPS = 422K
With outlined fonts they are both 1.8MB.
So does the AI file have live type and the .EPS outlined type for sending to the vendor?
BTW, this idea that AI and PDF are the preferred formats for "decent" vendors is way overstated. Just because your frame of reference contains this idea doesn't make it universal. (PDFs from a client are still not desirable for many reasons - especially for the lack of validation of their integrity on the clients' side.)
This kind of logic is the same that says PSDs are "preferred" for spot color workflows. Says who? People who it usually works for in their own circle of influence? Adobe fanboys? Can it work? Sure. Have I used them? In some instances. Would I still use DCS files? You bet.
Unless you have the street cred AND a wide experience with a great many vendors, etc. I think it's useless to make such declarative statements about how things are. Can you say "Good vendors use Kodak negative plates." That would say there are no decent vendors in Europe since they're commonly printing positive plates.
I remember asking an Adobe Rep at an InDesign showing about its trapping capabilities - was it just Pagemaker's trapping engine? He finally admitted it was then said, "But most service bureaus and printers use Adobe InRip Trapping." In 22+ years dealing with 2 man shops to some of the largest operations, in the US/UK/Australia/Canada/ and Mexico - I have NEVER worked with a shop who uses Adobe InRIP Trapping.
I think we should stick to answering questions and if we do offer anecdotal information on what works for us we should present as such what works for US.
