Everytime I try to open a certain file, inDesign crashes. I really need the file. Help?

Moving this discussion to the InDesign forum.  Can you please provide a few more details such as what version of InDesign you are using?  Which operating system do you have installed?  Do you receive an error message?

Interestingly I have found that if I modify a document in CS6 from an earlier CS3-CS5 document and save it - it works fine. But if I create a new document in CS6 the issue persists.
Looks like I will be modifying old documents for the time being

  • Office 2010 - Opening Network Files causes crashes

Our users documents are mapped to network storage via a Home folder location. Our treasurer has began encountering an issue with Office 2010 with Word (this is where I've been putting most of my effort) and Excel, other programs not tested.
Upon going to 'File->Open' it automatically redirects to his Home folder on the Network drive, and Office goes through it's various stages of crashing (encountered an issue, etc.) I've copied the contents of one specific folder he does most of his work in
to his desktop, but this is not optimal. Opening the contents from the desktop yields no issue.
As far as troubleshooting goes, I first tried doing a repair, then reinstall, and finally an advanced uninstall with Revo figuring it may be a corrupted registry key. None of this worked. I Googled some info on it and found add-ons commonly caused an issue.
I went as far as recommended by a MS support article, ultimately removing both the entire add-ins folder in Program files and in the registry. Still an issue. I progressed through various other support articles, removing various further keys (settings, toolbars,
etc.) Still occurring. I landed upon a technet article with nearly an exact issue, and it recommended updating as MS had fixed this various issue. (duh!) Update-wise, it was pretty far behind because all of our updates are signed through SCCM, regardless,
I have it fully updated up to Office Service pack 2. It's doing selective startups through msconfig as well, down to only Microsoft services. Finally, I've tried sfc /scannow, as well as safe mode, and neither had promising results (it was the first time I
was really hoping for sfc to find an error!
Just for further reference, I've tried all fixes in this article (before realizing it was only on network docs.) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541/en-us
As well as everything here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/a31f0a8e-e371-420f-a3f3-f85713f7ac0f/word-crashes-when-trying-to-open-file-from-network?forum=word
I attempted the crash dumps in this thread but was ultimately unsuccessful http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/95bc7898-e92d-4e47-8f73-390dba53e851/office-2010-applications-can-not-open-network-files-without-crashing?forum=officeitproprevious

    Hi,
Have you found anything in event Viewer?
Press Win + R and type “eventvwr” in the blank box, then press Enter.
You may find some information to determine the issue and post the information here to let me know more about this issue.
You can learn how to user event viewer from this link:

  • After updateting to 9.3 specific files causing crash when print starts

After updating to 9.3 some files, not all, are no more possible to print without crashing acrobat.
One example you can find here:
    http//europe/giga-byte.com/FileList/Manual/motherboard_manual_ga_ep45_ds3(r)_de.pdf
    Error:
    arobat.exe 9.3.0.148 with modul ssgs1.dll version 03.0.0 at address 0x00012ea9
(ssgs1 belongs to Samsung printer ML1210)
With 9.2, one week ago, there was no problem.
If I start printing the copmplete file(a couple of pages) the printer starts printing and prints the whole file, but after a couple of seconds acrobat crashes.
Theb print will NOT be stopped, the file will be printed cpompletly with ALL pages.
If I try to print separate and single pages, the FIRST page can be printed without crash.
Any other page will crash acrobat immediatly.
I sepate this error page (take out 1 page) to get a separate pdf file will cause the same problem.
If I copy this page to Word and then save from there as pdf - no error.
Print "as picture" also no problem.
Export to pdf/A (whatever this is) will cause the same problem
Save as ...pdf - same problem
    Save as optimized -same problem
Software: "Advanced pdf Repair" will not repair this
This problem was not be be seen with elder version 9.2 last week
This does not happen with  ALL pdf files
    System: XP SP3
    Action taken:
    Repair acrobat
    Reinstall printer driver

I had to rebuild the thumbnails after the first try, and so on the second try, it cleared up the distortion.  However, the photos then had the rotation and out of sequence issue.  I certainly can try again.  You previously mentioned that it make a few times.
As for the view, they are sorted by date.  It is really strange since it is only the photos at the very beginining.  These are photos where I had to manually enter the date when adding them to the libary.  I wonder if that has anything to do with.
I really appreciate your time and advice.  This is pretty unusual for me.  I have been using macs since 2004 and never has a software upgrade thrown me for such a loop.
    Thanks again.

  • Signing a pdf file causes crash

    H,
I've been having some problems with Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro for Windows when signing a pdf file, on Vista, related to a module called Stackhash, and I have no idea what it is. Has anyone had problems like this?

    Hi there,
I am having the same problems trying to sign in Acrobat 9 as well.  My pc is running on Vista also.  But I'm using and ePad with IntegriSign software.  The program crashes and closes every time I drag and create a signature box.  The software works fine in other programs such as Word but not Acrobat 9.  I hope someone will be able to help me figure out how to fix it.  Thanks!

  • Combining multiple files causes crash

I am using acrobat pro 11.0.10 on Mac Yosemite latest version OS X. When I try to combine multiple pdf files with more than say  10 pages the program simply crashes when I try to save the binder that Acrobat  creates - no warnings, no alerts. The pages I am trying to combine are actually from other pdf documents that are readable, usable etc. The creation of the binder doesn't appear to create any issues - it is only when I try to save it. I'm actually combining about 400 pages and started doing it in blocks of 100 pages or so, but am now down to blocks of 20 pages - so it is a but tedious doing only 20 pages at a time. Has anyone else had this problem?
    thanks
    John

    Hi ,
I would like to know did you try the insert command instead of combine files command ?If not ,then try the following and compare the output and see if acrobat again crashes or not .
You could also try a repair of your Acrobat and see the results .
Let us know how it goes .

  • Searching Safari pdf File Caused Crash

After installing OS X 10.5, whenever I tried to search a page in Safari that was pdf format it would crash. I tried all kinds of things to defeat the problem, trying several posted here, but to no avail. Finally my son, who is a software engineer, came up with the best idea: get rid of Adobe Reader and all of its Plug-ins. Voilla! no more problems and Preview is much nicer to work with. So that is what I recommend.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Apple does not respond to submitted crash reports. Rather, they are used for software development purposes. Best thing to do in this forum is to copy/paste a copy of the entire report to your reply in this thread.
If you see a relationship between the Adobe crashes and Safari opening a PDF file, then go to Adobe Acrobats preference file>Internet and designate Apple's "Preview" as your PDF reader. Then, go to the Finder and move to your desktop your Adobe Reader plug-in from your Internet Plug-ins folder either the main or user library). Restart Safari and try a PDF (it ought to now open within the browser). If Safari does not crash, then yes, the problem lies with Adobe. Something you can take up in one of Adobe's own forums.

  • I have files that freeze my programs whenever I try to open ANY file. Is there a way to find the exact files causing the crash?

I have files that are freezing my programs (adobe; after effect and photoshop, as well as maxon cinema 4d). Whenever I try to import ANY file from within the program it doen't even let me select the file I need before freezing. I have moved all files off my desktop and into my dropbox, and it now allows me to import files/search for files on the desktop but NOT dropbox, once I go to dropbox it freezes again. I am assuming there are files within dropbox now that are crashing my programs. The problem is I have a lot of files in there and would like to remove the corrupt ones so that I can use my programs without freezing. Is there a way to find the exact files causing the crash?
This has happened a couple of times and each time I have to move all my files off my desktop, so there must be a type of file doing this, I just don't know what files they are.

Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

ANY help would be greatly appreciated! It is making it really hard to get work done. THANKS!

This error sounds to me like you have/had BootCamp Windows installed and then removed, posible ?
If so (and even if not so), try restating your MBA while holding down the alt/option-key until you get to the Boot Selection Screen.
    Choose to boot OSX.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and set your OSX to be the default.

  • Preview/QuickView of HP Scan Pro PDF Files Causes System Crash in 10.5.5

Ever since upgrading to 10.5.5 on my iMac Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, I have been having problems with PDF files created by scanning documents using HP Scan Pro. Prior to 10.5.5, the PDFs from HP Scan Pro worked fine and behaved like any other PDF. Under 10.5.5, however, opening one in Preview or trying to view it in the Finder using QuickView causes the whole system to hang. Processor usage jumps to >100% and everything on the system becomes unresponsive. Every app causes a spinning beach ball, the Dock will not display, menus will not pull down, and I can't even call up the Force Quit dialog via the keyboard. There is nothing to be done but force-restart the system by holding down the power button.
Looking in the system.log, it seems that ATSServer is the process that is causing this problem. A dump of the relevent log entries is at the end of the message. The "Non-aligned pointer" and "Incorrect checksum" errors just continue forever until the point when I force a reboot.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Does anyone have knowledge of what changed in ATSServer or PDF handling in 10.5.5 that could be causing this? What is unique about the PDF files created by HP Scan Pro?
    Thanks,
    Drew

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread that I started. I am glad to know it's not just me having these problems.
I have run through all the usual suggestions related to ATSServer problems and problematic fonts: I've cleared caches, checked all the fonts for broken ones, haven't installed any new ones since this problem began, etc., etc.
I've been able to make a few more observations about the problem in my case:
    1. I don't get any crashes while using the HP Scanjet software. I can successfully create a PDF file.
    2. The problem for me only exists on PDF files that I have had HP Scanjet do OCR on and save the text with the image in the PDF. If I scan to create an image-only PDF, it does not cause a problem.
    3. I have now noticed that the problem comes not only when trying to open problem PDFs using Preview or QuickLook, but it also happens when mdsworker, the Spotlight indexer, tries to access the file for indexing. The computer then hangs. I have now had to turn off Spotlight until I can eliminate all the problem PDFs. (The problem only happens with PDFs created since the upgrade to 10.5.5. Older PDFs created with HP Scanjet that were in the Spotlight index earlier do not cause problems.)
    4. These problem PDFs will open correctly in Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader if Spotlight is off, but if Spotlight is on opening the file causes it to be indexed and the system hangs.
In Googling for solutions, I've found that people have sometimes been having problems with interaction between ATSServer and mdsworker since as far back as 10.2.x:

    Larry,
I did the unintall of just Illustrator and removed Preferences, however following directions the Cleaner Tool would not just clean for Illustrator.  the XLM file it produced did not list Illustrator separately, nor any Suite compenent, just Creative Suite (XLM listed below).  So I just uninstalled the whole suite, rebooted, then went back to the Cleaner Tool.   I tried to used the terminal command
sudo /PDHilman's Path to Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool ‐‐removeAll=CS5
But that gave an error message silent mode only worked for CS5.5 or below and went back to the GUI (odd).  I then used the Cleaner Tool GUI and removed all CS5 - CS5.5.   The log file is also below.
I went into my library and there were still many CS5 - CS5.5 items under Application Support and Preferences!  For example  com.adobe.illustrator.plist.lockfile
I then reinstralled the whole suite.
STILL ILLUSTRATOR CRASHES WHEN TRYING TO OPEN A FILE.
I note, I think the last thing I did before this started was followed some directions to copy Mathematica fonts into my user library so I wasn't missing some math symbols when editing PDFs created with Mathematica.  But that was successful and I was able to open/edit/save them just fine.

  • Vexing 10.5.6 file system bugs causing crashes; wose with Server OS 10.5.x

We continue to experience occasional MacOS 10.5.6 data volume instabilities. Just today, the system reported that it could not repair a purely archival data volume at a time when I was not accessing the volume and had not asked the OS to 'repair' it.
Then when manually running a repair on that same data volume in Disk Utility, storage services caused a kernel panic crash.
This problem was more prevalent when I tried the server version of Mac OS 10.5.6, where the OS caused disk volume corruption on the dedicated TimeMachine backup drive, and then started to crash frequently in the face of that self-induced corruption.
There was no disk volume corruption and no crashes before 10.5.6.
I would like to know why there should never be a file system condition on data volumes that would induce the entire OS to crash. I would completely understand a forced dismount of the corrupted volumes perhaps, or continuing in a read-only mode until the impacted volume could be repaird, BUT NOT AN OS CRASH. Even attempting to use the repair function on the unmounted volume would cause a crash.
The reason I know this is a file system bug and not the hardware is that the same system can endlessly zero out the data on the same drives, copy large test files to & from the drives, etc. The only situation where these file system crashes happen is with high file counts as one would encounter on a backup drive or on a data archive drive.

This evening OS 10.5.6 reported that Time Machine could not write to its target backup volume on one of the new 1.5TB drives...the nightmare cycle of
    1. OS 10.5.6 causes volume corruption
    2. OS 10.5.6 unable to repair volume corruption, crashing instead
    3. OS 10.5.6 crashes over and over as it tries to auto-mount the volume
    4. hard drive has to be physically ejected and wiped using a WINDOWS system so that it can be used again!
This is a sickening tale of disk corruption woe that started with the OS 10.5.6 update.
As fast as I opened an AppleCare support case on this issue, they were closing it behind my back without resolving the issue.
The kernel panics related to the volume mount problem are simply outragrous:
"jnl: mod block start: buffsize 512 not a multiple of block size 4096\n"
KERNEL PANICS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN DUE TO A VOLUME MOUNT ERROR---EVER.
And yet I see in the support database that this is a recurring theme that has been seen in other OS storage situations, including Xserve storage where the bug would cause much more business damage.
    I want this fixed NOW.

  • Damaged file causes InDesign to crash and I can not open it now?

I was working on a document and tried to use the eye dropper tool to select a color for a box I was going to use.
I accidentally clicked on a placed vector image box and the document closed and InDesign quit.
After doing some searching online, it was recommended to find the recovery file and delete it from my system, however, I can't find exactly where it is.
I wound up deleting several items from the cashe file, but that didn't work.
I did an "uninstall" of InDesign and then installed a new version. That did not work either.
Where I am now...I can open InDesign and create a new document, but every time I try to open either the damaged file or the previous year file (which should not be damaged), InDesign crashes.
i.e. - The file that crashed was the 2015 version of my document. I went to archived versions of that particular document (2014 and also 2013 versions) and they all crashed.
(The files were all named different, based on the year created).
    Help!

Emptying the recovery folder makes sense to me....as far as the plugins, font manager, I'm not sure if that would be the problem.
Of course, at this point, I'm striking out. I don't know how or what to do about plugins...do you have specific directions?
Because of the deadline, I'm having to start over on my project. I think instead of building the pages in InDesign, I'll build in Photoshop and place the Photoshop files into InDesign.
I can't remember ever having this problem and I've used InDesign for many years. I am on the monthly plan and have the latest versions of everything.

  • Photoshop CS4 and graphic cards. Can cause crashing?

Since upgrading to CS4 I seem to have increased crashing.
    Here are my system specs.
    Mac 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    9 GB of Ram
250 GB internal dedicated scratch disc
NVDIA GeForce 7300 GT with 256 VRAM
After having endless techs look at my machine and upgrading everything. I am beginning to suspect the graphics card.
With OpenGL can a underperforming video card cause crashing in photoshop especially with massive file sizes ( multilayered CMYK poster sized files the can exceed 7 GB)?

Did you install the 11.0.1 update?
Is your OS up to date with patches?
Have you tried disabling OpenGL in preferences to avoid using the GPU/Graphics card?

  • Image Processor Jpg Files Cause LR to Stop Working

    Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom 1.4.1
Vista Ultimate 64 / 8 Gig Ram / Lots of Hard Drive space on Scratch Drive
nVidia 8800 GTS w/640 MB Ram
    Image files processed in Photoshop
Exported via: File > Scripts > Image Processor (IP)
IP settings are default except the jpg output is set to 12/max
From the same PSD file, no modifications in PS
One file will cause LR to crash ("A problem caused the program to stop working correctly) the next does not.
Both jpg files open and display without a problem in...
    - Photoshop
    - Adobe Camera Raw
    - Microsoft Office Picture Viewer
    - Apple Quicktime Picture Viewer
    - Windows Explorer (thumbnails)
I have saved two otherwise identical files, one crashes LR every time, the other opens in LR fine, every time.
This has been occurring in about 3 out of every 100 files saved via IP.
The next time LR is opened it crashes again if the 'bad' file is not renamed or deleted due to the automatic file updating process.
Trying to import 100 files requires importing them one at a time when this happens because there is nothing to indicate which file cause LR to break during the batch import.
If Adobe Tech Support would like the two 'identical' files they can email me and I'll send them along.
