File Click & Select vs Click Pause Drag & Drop

Please, someone tell me there is a way -and how- to disable the following behavior.
Summary:
Expected/Desired Behavior: I select files, click one that is highlighted, start dragging, the list of selected files is dragged along with cursor to be dropped in a new window.
Actual Behavior: I select files, click one that is highlighted, start dragging, a new selection is started, previous selected files are deselected, and nothing is dragged to be dropped elsewhere.
Details/Gripe:
If I highlight a series of files in finder - which I usually do by clicking the first one, going to the last, and while holding shift clicking the last one to select all in the middle; or by holding option and selecting multiple files that are not in order - I expect the behavior to be that when I click and start to drag from a highlighted file for that file to MOVE/DRAG with the cursor to a new location.
However, what is happening, is even if I select multiple files in the same folder but are not consecutively listed, when I click and start to drag the selection area restarts from my cursor and a "quick selection" is made as the cursor drags along -- subsequently UNSELECTING everything I had selected earlier.
This is a real problem for me. I consistently do this and it annoys me. The only "work around" that I have found is to click a file, wait two seconds, and then start dragging. However, this is completely unacceptable to me - it wastes time and more importantly I do not remember to do it nine times out of ten.
Maybe there is a key I can hold down while dragging to make it drag? Or a system config somewhere? I have tried everything I can think of and nothing cures this issue for me.
Other:
In addition to that. Is there any way to enable shortcuts for moving files - that is, so I can highlight files, hit COMMAND+X [or any other key combination] for cut, and paste them in a new location, or copy them to a new location? I realize this is a Windows behavior, but I really do prefer to use hot combinations.

Thank you for the quick response. Unfortunately, that does not solve my problem.
If finder is in list mode, and I hold down command, select several files quickly, then click and start to drag on the last to move them all - it changes selection [albeit, it inverses anything already selected], it does not start dragging.
That said, if they were preselected and I have newly hit command and start to drag, about 90% of the time it drags and lets me move the files, the remainder of the time it starts selecting other files ... which is not the behavior I want.
Is there any way I can disable the click+drag w/o hot key = select? I would be happy to have it do this when I hold down shift and click+drag, but as the default behavior across all commands it really does not work well for me.

Unable to double-click or drag/drop files to open.

I'm running Photoshop CC 64 on a Windows 7 64 machine and am only able to open files in Photoshop by going to File->Open. Double-clicking from Explorer doesn't work and i can not drag/drop files into the open application window or taskbar icon. Right clicking on files and selecting "Open with" also doesn't work.
I checked file associations and made sure to choose CC 64. If I right click on the shortcut and choose "Run As Administrator" which I have to do in order to get files to open between Lightroom and Photoshop (both need to be Run As Administrator), I'm still unable to open from Windows Explorer. However, if I check the box to "Run this program as administrator" in the shortcut's Compatibility tab, I can double-click to open from Explorer but am prompted with a UAC warning every time. Dragging/dropping into the open app still doesn't work.
Opening between Bridge and PS works as expected so long as both programs are "Run As Administrator"
Been searching the forums here and seen suggestions of similar but not the same issue, at least not that I've found.
Anyone else experiencing? Suggested remedies?

This is an OS permission problem. Make sure you have ownership of the HD. Do a web search on how to check. External HD can be a problem for permission.

I want to rearrange images/files position in their folders. Drag & drop does not work

I have just bought Elements 12. Great programme. I used to use Picasa 3, a good free programme. In Picasa it is easy to move images around in their folders by simply click, drag and drop. This does not work in elements. Is it possible to achieve this somehow?

Hi,
You can't do it with folders but you can if you use Albums.
Folders can only be in Date or Name order. Albums have the additional setting of Album Order - see the Sort By field at the top.
If you right click on a folder name, you can select Create an instant Album. This will create an album with the same name as the folder. Select the album and make sure that Sort by is set to Album Order and you can do drag and drop to re-order the images.

How to Auto Check-in .pdf Files in a Document library(after Drag & Drop) - sharepoint 2013?

Once I Drag and drop the .pdf documents in a document library files get
checked out automatically.
I want the files to be checked-in automatically once they are dragged and Dropped.
Please note : I am able to do the above things with .doc (world files) but not with the
.pdf files.
I have provided all the default values. Tried all the below options Still no success :-(
Require Content Approval for submitted items ? NO
Create a version each time you edit a file in this document library ? No visioning
Require documents to be check out before they can be edited? No

Hi,
I found the problem(Not the solution).
I have set the default values from Column default value settings,
the default values are getting set to the columns but the file still in checked-out mode.
If I put the defult values to Library columns directly/Site column directly , Its working fine. - We found this work-around.
But still the issue Exists why its not working when I set Default values from Column default value settings
and try to drag and drop documents. :-(

Strange problem with drag&drop!!

i have a strange problem but not like the other users with drag&drop in Leopard..
mine is not exactly like this:

i can hold left click and move files but when i need to "drop" them at the .app's window the app rejects the file back! (some of the applications not all!)
what i mean in examples is:
i cannot drag&drop anything in the VLC's player window but i can inside the vlc's "controller" window
i cannot drag&drop a picture in preview
i cannot drag&drop any file in photoshop's new file/empty canvas
i cannot drag&drop a mp3 file in itunes but i can drag&drop a full album folder(only in playlist,not in the player window)!
and i can describe more to show u that it's not about vlc or preview or PS problem, but finder's/leopard problem.
(i thought in the 1st, that it's vlc's problem and i downloaded a lot of versions!)
all the other programs works well, for example i can drag&drop a video to final cut or motion
i can do the same in iMovie (at the space it says"drag&drop media here etc)
and of course i can drag&drop files to desctop,hard disks etc.
i can copy/paste text etc (i can copy/paste texti can copy/paste texti can copy/paste texti can copy/paste text)
i am trying to give you an idea, suggest me what else should i try in order to focus where exactly the problem is!

I disagree. I have tried this since reading your post, on all my VLC versions. It does not work.
You can, however drop a movie onto the VLC icon in the dock. That works fine.
RealPlayer accepts a file dropped on it. I just checked it.
Not all apps accept a file on their output window. Usually only the input window.
i started my windows bootcamp partition before and i saw this works.
and i remember trying VLC in tiger a lot of years before, this was ok.
and yes of course it would be also normal to drop a picture in the photoshop canvas.
so what is not normal here is my problem, if u can help i'm happy if you cannot please don't confuse it more

Drag & Drop Area on Dynrpo

Hi experts,
I have this on my dynpro:
1. A tree with different files
2. A HTML-Container which can show different files from the tree in 1.
3. A second tree on which the user can add files from the first tree (by double click or Drag&Drop).
Now I want a "area" where user can drop files from the first tree and then a Download-window will apear...
Which container should I use? Or any other elemt.
At the end there only should be a small area, called Download, where user drops the choosen file and then the download-dialog comes up.
Any suggestions?

Drag/Drop inside SWFLoader not working

I've got a Flex application that loads a secondary Flex app via SWFLoader. The secondary app uses drag/drop operations to rearrange components, delete them etc. The secondary app works perfectly while it is running by itself (eg. not 'embedded' via SWFLoader into the main app).
Once I load it into the main application using a SWFLoader drag/drop operations no longer work correctly. All other events seems to work fine. It is only drag/drop that don't always work right.
Is there something I am missing that would cause this issue? I'm thinking there may be a property I need to set on the SWFLoader. Hopefully someone can help.

I did as you say, and DragManager is in the report file in several places. Also, Drag/Drop does work inside of SWFLoader for the TileList in the loaded app, and even somtimes as it should as far as the drag/drop operation I am talking about, but not always.
It seems to work sometimes and not others. When it does work it is not nearly as smooth as when I run the app as a "stand alone" and I never see the drag proxy while dragging inside of SWFLoader.
Is there anything else that could be causing these issues?

ADG drag&drop issue

A strange problem i came across:
I have a ADG which gets its data from an XML of 3 levels
(<root><node><childnode/></node></root>)
All works great but i have this strange issue:
Once a drag&drop action is completed the first row of the
ADG is automaticly selected.
I tried using the dragComplete event and set the
myADG.selectedIndex to null, or -1 but it doesnt do anything (the
first row is still auto selected),
I did find that if i use myADG.expandall() in the
dragComplete event it does work, but it doesnt help me...
So my question is: how can i make the ADG not to select any
row after drag&drop action?

Command+click and drag to select multiple files

Hi everyone,
I switched about a year ago and recently joined this group. I love OS X and will never go back to windoze, however after recently upgrading to Tiger, I went to command+click and drag to select multiple files in order to drag them to the trash, all I succeeded in doing was to drop one file into the next folder down. Did I miss a check box somewhere, or something. It feels like windoze now, having to command+click individual files to select more than one, or use the edit menu to "select all".
I'm not going back to Panther just to get back this feature I miss, and was hoping there is a way to get it to work in Tiger, any suggestions?

You might find this easy to do in column view:
1. Select a group of contiguous files by clicking on the first, then hold down the shift key and click on the last one you want, all files between first and last will be selected.
2. To add an odd file here and there to the group hold down the command key and click on the file.
Thus you can quickly select an entire group in the middle with click/shift click, then add additional files individually to the selected group.

Cannot Drag & Drop in the dock or double click to open files anymore

Since installing OS X 10.4.3 then .4 I can only open files through the appropiate
application using OPEN under FILE in that application. Drag & drop into the dock app only gives a momentary flash and a double click on the file/document does nothing. Any ideas? It worked fine in 10.3

I have a similar issue, but my case is pretty odd (it is to me, anyway). I am in a largely Windows-based company, but work in a small Mac-based department. We recently relocated into new offices, and the new environment is run on a Windows 2003 server (our old offices were on a Windows 2000 server).
My issue is that when I try to double-click an icon, drag an icon to the Dock, or open with keyboard shortcuts, the application launches, but no file opens. The only way I can open a file is via File>Open through the application.
My computer is a PowerMac G5 running OS X 10.4.4 -- oddly, our 10.3.x users do not have this issue. And I never had any problems on the W2K server. So I'm sure there's something with the new 2003 server and 10.4, but I've searched through the threads and didn't see anything exactly like my issue.
Any thoughts? Are there server settings that may have been missed by our IT department? Or is there something I need to set on my Mac? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can open Topics by drag & drop, but not by double-clicking in the DITA map

Hi,
evidently I made an error somewhere in my structure app, the result is that I cannot open DITA topics by double clicking them in the DITA map anymore (Framemaker does simpy nothing). I can, however, open them by dragging the xml files onto the Framemaker window. If I use the standard DITA 1.2 application everything works fine so I guess the problem is in my mapping.
Here is what I tried to achieve:
We need certain variations of the normal 'topic' type topic. The DTD should be identical, however different structures should be auto-inserted when creating a topic and the topic should have certain attribute values predefined.
The idea is that the author can select one of these topic types when creating a topic, but when opening an existing topic simply edit it with the standard topic temple.
Here is what I did:
I duplicated the topic.template.fm, renaming it say "topic_a.template.fm", "topic_b.template.fm" etc. (just an example).
I made adjustments to the EDD of these templates, changing the auto-insertions and the default values of some attributes.
In the structapps.fm file I added XML applications for these new topic types, mapping each application to one of the new templates, but to the original topic DTD and r/w rules. E.g. the application "DITA_1.2_topic_a" is mapped to the "topic_a.template.fm" template, and to the original "topic.dtd" and "topic.rules.txt" files.
In Framemaker I then created corresponding application mappings in the DITA options. E.g. the topic type "A" (which defines the visible text in the "New topic" menu) is maped to the XML application "DITA_1.2_topic_a".
The result:
It works as intended in every way when creating topics. The topics are saved with the standard doctype 'topic'. However for when I try to open topics from the DTD by double-clicking then nothing happens. Opening topics by drag & drop works fine though and they are opened with the normal (general) "topic.template.fm" template as desired.
Any ideas? Was this confusing or am I completely off somewhere?

Hi Robert...
When you say that you need "variations" from the normal topic type .. are those structural variations or just formatting? FM associates structure apps with XML files based on the doctype (root element). If your files all have the same root element, then they will all open with the same structure application (unless you specify a different one when opening the file or by importing a new EDD). It sounds like you really should be creating a specialization for each alternate topic type. If you don't, you'll end up getting the wrong "model" assigned to the wrong file.
Multiple EDDs (structure apps) can share the same DTD, and one EDD (structure app) can support multiple models. This is how the "ditabase" app works. There are lots of ways to set this up, but I think what you've done is probably not quite right.
The default structure app setup in FM11 and FM12 is very complicated to work with. I recommend creating a single app that supports many models. This isn't always possible, but it sounds like in your case it should be. I've set up one app that supports 13 different specialized topic models and it works fine.
Note that even though you've added structure apps for each model, if you end up opening the files using the default template, you are no longer using those modified models.

Can't click-drag-drop

I having sudden and crippling trouble when I try to click and drag files in the finder. When I click-drag a file icon, almost always (>95% of attempts) nothing happens (or the file attempts to open). Rarely the icon moves--but usually some random, uncontrolled, unexpected distance on the screen. Then I "lose" it as if I had released the mouse button. This has resulted in files being dropped indiscriminately in other folders, opening unintended applications, etc.
A related (?) problem: similar malfunctions arise when I try to click and drag-select text in a document.
This happens with equal frequency and severity on each of two hard drives, one running 10.3.9 and the other running 10.4.7.
I hope someone out there recognizes these symptoms and can prescribe action. Thanks.

update: changing the batteries on the wireless Logitech mouse slightly improved the situation--but not by much.
update 2: when I swap in an old corded one-button Apple mouse, the problem disappears, which places the blame squarely on the wireless mouse. I should have thought of doing this before posting in this forum, sorry.
Do wireless mice really lose it so abruptly like this? rats, I've gotten accustomed to those programmable buttons and the scroll wheel...

Double-click and drag don't open image files

Hi,
I'm having problems loading images in Preview and Adobe apps (CS1).
From Finder, I can double click to open an image in Preview but it only opens the first image, and won't load more than one. I've tried changing the preferences to "open groups of images in the same window" or "open all images in one window." Neither solve the problem.
My adobe apps won't open a file when I double click it from the finder at all. I have to use the "open" command from within the application to open an image file.
I am a designer and photographer trying to browse groups of images at once and this is driving me crazy! I have tried copying over different preference files from my old computer (a powerbook G4), and I'm wondering if I either failed to copy the right one or copied something that is interfering with the shortcut actions.
The interesting part is, that the same actions are working fine for other kinds of files -- for example, I can open multiple word documents by double clicking their icons in Finder.
Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you.

What kind of files are these? If I wanted to open multiple images in Preview (be they BMP, JPEG, PSD, whatever) I would select them and drag onto the Preview icon in the Dock which opens the first image in a single window with the remaining images in a 'thumbnail drawer' to the right (like you get with big PDF documents).
On the other hand if I double-click, 10 to 1 it would launch Photoshop which I use as an image editor only, not an image manager or viewer. You can of course change the application which any document uses to open it, with the Get Info window. But if you use more than one application (as I do - PS to edit, Preview to just view), then click-and-drag onto the Dock might be your best bet.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.
*View > Toolbars
*Right-click empty toolbar area
Use Toolbar Layout (Customize) to open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.
*check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
*if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
*if missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
*if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar setup

Illustrator CS4 Type Tool: Selecting won't work by double click or click and drag.

I'm not exactly sure what happened, but suddenly my Type Tool can not select type by double clicking or click and drag any more.
I'm using Illustrator CS4 (14.0.0) on a MacPro with OSX 10.6.8. Can someone please suggest what might be happening and how to resolve this problem?

There is a functional reason for this depending on how you work if you read yup about it in the help files i think they explain it well as i recalled it was exxplained well in the manual when they had one.
It is not a change it has been this way for a long time and the options serve different users in a helpful way. hough it wwould be helpful to have a toggle of some kind.
