Well its kind of hard to decode your english (no offense! I'm just not sure I understand what you mean)
Let's do some tests.
First check if your user belongs to the "storage" group (have a look at /etc/group or open a terminal and as root type
grep <your-username> /etc/group
Youwill get a list of groups your user belongs to. One should look like this:   storage:x:95:<your-username>,hal
If storage is not part of that list, add your user to this group (as root):
gpasswd -a <your-username> storage
Next test: open a terminal in your users home directory and do
touch test.txt
This should just create an empty file named test.txt.
You won't get output if it worked, so you may check if it really was created with
ls -l
That will list the content of the directory. You should see test.txt there, probably other files too.
If this fails the drive is probably mounted read-only (I see no reason this should be the case in your fstab but better be sure). Btw. is it an internal drive or let's say external USB-Harddisk?
If the above works you know at least that the drive is mounted read-write and that you have write permissions in you home-folder as it should be.
Next Step: try deleting the file again witch
rm test.txt
and check again with the ls -l if it was deleted.
None of this will immediately solve your problem but we might get a hint what is going wrong...
If you get any error messages post them here.
Sorry but I don't understand what you mean with  "but I can not root as you can send files to the trash"
You mean you can't become root at all or just that deleting the files as root is not practical for every day use? (It sure isn't that was just to test if the drive is mounted read-write.)

  • File could not be moved to the selected destination

When moving a group of files to a different folder, most moved fine. For one I got a message "There was an error copying files to the destination you selected. The following files could not be copied." and "File could not be moved to the selected desination. (1)".
Having been a programmer I know that writing a really useful error message, as opposed to one like this that gives you no useful information at all for solving the problem, is not that hard. In fact, it's just basic sound programming practice. Yet I've encountered error messages like this more than once in Adobe products.
Now, the real question is what is this telling me and how do I go about fixing it? The file I was copying is in the original folder just like the other files I selected. The destination folder exists--the other files were moved into it. There is no duplicate of the file in the destination folder. The file is not lost because I can export it. The help file has no information. What else can I check?
(Yes, I know that a LR workflow is not built around folders. But sometimes you just need to move a photo.)

What OS/version are you running?  External disk, network disk?
This is almost always a permissions / ACL problem.  Happens most of the time with newer windows os like Vista and even worse with Win7.  They've changed the way "permissions" are handled in both OS's to something more complicated.  Not only do you have to have read/write access, but you must "take ownership" of those folders (and everything below them) to be able to use them properly.
    Cheers!

  • Mail - The mesage "subject" could not be moved to the mailbox trash

    Hello,
Suddenly, I started to receive an error message when I try to delete emails.:
"The mesage "subject" could not be moved to the mailbox trash - "account name" The operation couldn't be completed. File exists.
The strange thing is that sometimes, if I try again it does delete it, sometimes not.
    I didn't do anything, didn't change nothing.
I've repaired my permissions, restart my mac, nothing helps.
    any idea?
    thanks,
    shlomit

I've been having a similar problem off and on for months with my university's Exchange account. I've tried Mailbox > Rebuild to no effect and the only thing that provided an extended remedy was to delete the account and recreate it. This isn't a problem with an Exchange account but isn't so good for other types.
Anyway, I just realised that I'd been using the Rebuild command only on the Inbox and not on all the other folders within the account. I selected all the folders and then Mailbox > Rebuild and everything is working well again. I feel pretty stupid that I didn't think of it earlier.

  • Moved iTunes library to an ext hard drive to make space on my int drive... Followed steps from apple.  Now I cannot access my music... It says: "File could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"

Moved iTunes library to an ext hard drive to make space on my int drive... Followed steps from apple.  Now I cannot access my music... It says: "File could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"
I moved my iTunes library to my external hard drive some time ago and I followed the directions listed here on the apple support page.  It did copy my library and now is on my hard drive... I can open iTunes and use it to sync all of my devices but I would like to play my music... I can see all of my music files but can not play them if I click on an album or song it says the following:  "(file name) could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"  I click locate but do not know where to go from there?  I need a way to access all files and not to hunt down one at a time on my hard drive... I am pretty sure I deleted the original library to make space on my internal drive which was the reason for moving it.  I have tried and tried to fix it and do not have a lot of time to do so with a one and two year old at my house who do not like it whenI sit down at my computer.  What to do???  Any help is much appreciated!!!

See Make a split library portable. Move all of the bits of the library together in the the correct shape and it should work. Or undo exactly what you did and then start over.
If you're a former Windows user don't try merging two folders together that have the same name by dropping one into the same folders as the other, as that goes badly on a Mac.

  • Unable to move message, the message could not be moved to the mail box trash

I have an iPhone 4 with the error message 'unable to move message, the message could not be moved to the mailbox trash' with 4 emails, I managed to remove 2 of the messages by marking them as read however with the other 2 i tried this and it just crashed the Mail app any help would be appreciated.

Did you have Hotmail set-up with Android prior?  I did, and if you did too, you have the same problem, and this is how to solve it.
From your desktop computer, the Hotmail (or Outlook) website uses the folder "Deleted" for your deleted messages as default.  On your iPhone, the deleted folder's name by default is "Trash".
When I had my Hotmail with Android, it created a folder Trash for deleted messages, and it's creation was amongst all my folders.  So when you go back and look at Hotmail from your desktop, you will see a folder Trash, in addition to the default Deleted.  My Trash folder had all the emails I deleted from my Android.
That said, with the manual folder Trash that was created, when trying to set-up Hotmail now on iPhone, because I already had a folder Trash, it conflicted with the default "Trash" folder it wanted to created, so it didn't create it, being the reason why you can't delete emails, because it doesn't have the defaulted "Trash" folder to go to.
The solution is to delete the folder "Trash" from your desktop, uninstall Hotmail from your iPhone, and re-install, and it worked, the defaulted "Trash" was then created, alongside the "Sent" and "Junk".

  • The message could not be moved to the mailbox trash - Exchange Account

    Hi All,
Not sure if it has anything to do with the update.
Mail shows 1 unread message all the time, I've read it, still shows unread. I try to delete it and get the error "the message could not be moved to the mailbox trash", same error if I try to move it to the trash folder.
Message has been long deleted from my actual INBOX via Outlook weeks ago.
I've seen the suggestions to touch the trash settings under MAIL > Advanced, but there is no such option for Exchange accounts.

I found an answer that has worked for me and others in another thread. It sounds pointless but just do it, all of a sudden I can delete mail now.
    1. Go to Settings
    2. Mail, Contacts, Calendars
    3. Click your email adress.
    4. Scroll down and click "Advanced"
    5. Click "Deleted Mailbox"
    6. Click "Spam" (at the bottom) then back to "Trash" (at the top).
That's it. It should now work again.

  • I cannot delete mail from my inbox and get a message saying (msg) could not be moved to the mailbox trash-POP account".

I suddenly cannot delete mail from my inbox and get a message saying " (msg) could not be moved to the mailbox trash-POP account".  It does not matter if I am trying to delete a single message or mulitiple messages.  Can anyone help?

If you're running Leopard, as your profile says, then you need to post your question in that forum, not the Snow Leopard forums. So if you're really running Snow Leopard, you need to update your profile to show that, as well as give more details about what kind of mail accounts you have, and who your email provider is.

  • TS3899 My email on my iPhone won't allow me to trash old messages -- I get "unable to move message" "message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash"  I have restored to factory settings, asked AT&T about it (no help).

my iphone won't allow me to trash old email messages -- I get the little window that says "Unable to Move Message -- The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash." AT&T can't help me -- no one else has this problem, even though we're all on the same server from my company. I have restored to factory settings, but it didn't help. My email account settings are correct, the same as on my computers, and I can trash old messages on them.
    What do I do now?

I have had a similar problem recently and followed advice here. Specifically, I used the brute force approach. As suggested by this site, I strongly urge you to backup your mailbox before trying this fix - just to be on the safe side.

  • IPhone 4 will not delete 'trash' ... "Unable to Move Message ... The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash"

I cannot empty my 'trash' ... it comes up with ... "Unable to Move Message ... The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash"
I went into Settings > Mail > 'my account' > advanced > deleted mailbox > Trash (On My iPhone) ... it appears to delete a few items only ... I may try to individually delete 30 items and only 4 go ?  help please ...

I have the same problem and there is no advanced option. Was this removed in the upgrade to ios 5? I have been chasing a solution to this and the fact I have various duplicate emails appearing in my work account for days now! It seems like I may have to delete my account and re-install. This appears to be a common problem, where is Apple's fix for it?

  • HT1668 I get the "Unable to Move Message. The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash". whenever i try deleting from my ipad 2. I am unable to delete from Trash...HELP

I get the "Unable to Move Message. The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash". whenever i try deleting from my ipad 2. I am unable to delete from Trash...HELP!
Additional info...I am trying to delete these emails from a Webmail address. the Trash currently has 11 messages and they arent being deleted.

Try turning the account off and on : Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars , then tap the account on the right, slide Mail to 'off', exit settings and go back into the Mail app, and then go back to Settings and slide Mail back to 'on'
If that doesn't work then try closing the Mail app via the taskbar : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Another option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If you still can't delete them then go into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars,  select the account on the right-hand side of that screen, select Account, then Advanced, Deleted Mailbox, and under On The Server tap the 'Trash' folder so that it gets a tick against it - then come out of that series of popups by tapping on the relevant buttons at the top of them and then see if you can delete emails.

Why do I see the following error message?
"Unable to Move Message. The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash".

Try closing the Mail app via the multitasking bar and see if you can delete them when you re-open the app : double-click the home button to open the taskbar and then swipe or drag the Mail app's 'screen' up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
If that doesn't fix it then try going into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Then select the account on the right-hand side of that screen, select Account, then Advanced, Deleted Mailbox, and under On The Server tap the 'Trash' folder so that it gets a tick against it - then come out of that series of popups by tapping on the relevant buttons at the top of them and then see if you can delete emails.
