File Crashing on Output - printing/PDF/other
Firstly - with any file that is repeatedly crashing make a backup of it Immediately!
Option 1
Try to remove corruption using the Export/Save to IDML link to how to here
Option 2
Determine how many pages in your document
Export or Print your document in halves, i.e., if it's 200 pages then export or print page 1-100 then page 101-200
Keep halving the document pages until you find the problem pages, i.e., 1-100 crashes then try 1-50 and 51-100, then 1-25 and 26-50 etc. until you've found the page(s) that are crashing
When you've narrowed it down to a single page or multiple pages try to find out what is causing it to crash you can do this by:
Move half the items on the page to the Pasteboard (do not delete them) and try to export again, if it crashes then move more items to the pasteboard and so on until you find the culprit(s)
Recreate the object(s), i.e., if a particular image is causing it to crash, then don't duplicate that frame. You should use File>Place and replace the image within the layout in a new graphic frame.
Images
If the file still crashes then you should resave the image as a complete new file name and different file extension, if it's PSD then save as TIFF or vice versa.
(Note some special file formats like DCS or EPS and PDF should not be opened in Photoshop if they contain vector elements - if you don't know if they do or do not please do not open them in Photoshop)
Text Frames
Copy that text and Place it in a text editor like Notepad or TextEdit to strip all the formatting.
Create a new Text Frame and reimport the text by using File>Import or using Copy and Paste
Restyle the text to your liking
Any suggestions, edits or other workflows for files that won't output via print or other method, or will not export using File>Export are thoroughly welcome.
Thanks for posting this Eugene.
An additional comment about "fixing" problem text:
I often have very good luck replacing text that is causing file crashes using InDesign Tagged Text, which will preserve the formatting. To export tagged text you must have some sort of active text cursor, either a selection, or just a flashing cursor in the story. With an active cursor InDesign Tagged Text will become an option in the "type" dropdown when you select File > Export...
If you have selected some text, only the selection will be exported. A flashing cursor with no text selected will export the entire story, even if it is threaded across many pages. You will have two options after choosing tagged text and pressing OK in the dialog, abbreviated or verbose, and it doesn't seem to matter which you choose, other than a small difference in the size of the text file that is saved. To use the tagged text file you place it, in the same way you would place a Word file or other text file, but ID will interpret the internal tagging and bring it in formatted.
I will often replace an entire story this way, but on occasion I've also found it works well to export either the entire story, or just a selection of a section I've identified as a problem, then place the tagged text file on the pasteboard. From there I will copy the text I need and paste into position replacing a problem paragraph or two. This seems to give an added layer of cleanup without losing the formatting.
I actually developed this technique a few years ago working on a file that was causing problems for Eugene, but I'm not sure he remembers.

Crashing (was Re: File Crashing on Output - printing/PDF/other)
I have tried everything and its not my files, its my InDesign because it doesnt matter if i create a brand new file and just simple write in one word, it crashed everytime i export to anything but IDML...
I've branched this out into its own thread.
You say you tried everything (I presume those things suggested in the original thread). Did that include trashing your prefernces? See Replace Your Preferences
Does this happen with a test file if you change the font, and particularly if you change the font in your Basic Paragraph style as well?
Does it happen if you create a new user account and use that account?
What version of ID are you using, and have you installed the latest patch for it? Which OS? -
Cs5 InDesign crashing when exporting print pdf and markup file?
We just did our upgrade yesterday from cs4 to cs5. Two things that I have discovered so far that I haven’t been able to figure out.
I need to create a pdf from a file...I go to export — print pdf — this QUITS (if I do the interactive pdf it works okay but I need a print ready one. I had to print a postscript file — then distill it in acrobat — so far, knock on wood that works but is time consuming.
I tried to export a — InDesign MarkUp file (imdl), the new interchange to go from 5 to 4 — I was thinking okay...I will just take the cs5 file back to cs4 and make the pdf there but when making the imdl file to open in cs4 I also crash.
any help would be appreciated!I had a major problem with exporting CS5 Indesign interactive PDF doc (270pgs) it would crash reasonbly consistently, other times behave OK? After many hours reading forums, and Adobe help desk I found my own work-around which I want to share (as I couldn't believe it was so simple and worked!)
OK..so the doc has navigation buttons and hyperlinks all the way through....I Exported half the doc. Then the other half. Then I combined in Acrobat.
There it is....simple and boy am I happy now!! -
ID CS6 Crash exporting to Print PDF in Windows
Hi there,
I am having trouble exporting my indesign file to a high quality pdf document for printing. I am using Windows 7 64-bit.
Current file size of the document is 234 MB, most of the images are linked. But when I try and do an export, it crashes with this error:
(This is in german. It shows the standard error and closing message of windows 7. Adobe Indesign CS6 has stopped working... blahblah)
So I have tried exporting it into other various files (for testing purposes).
Downscaled graphics to 72dpi is crashing.
IDML is crashing.
I have also tried it on another laptop with windows 7, still crashing.
Exporting it without most of the graphics (using a copy I made a few days ago) is working. The filesize of the copy was 13 MB. Fonts and everything else looking good. After this copy I started putting in the graphics.
Interactive PDF (with obviously downscaled graphics) is working.
So any tips on how to get this done? Thanks in advance.Does the file export correctly with previous version of ID?
A bug is logged for a simlar issue #3229808 . As pointed by Peter, it happens because of shortage in memory allocation for big files.
Divide and conquer should be the current work-around. Identify the the page that is heavy and export in parts. -
Firefox crashes (hangs) while printing pdf (or xps)
Firefox crashes/hangs whenever I try to print pdf using Adobe Acrobat V9.5. I updated Acrobat to XI but the problem didn't go away. It crashes the same way when I try to print to xps as well.
I have to force close the browser and I see Acrobat (or XPS) conversion dialog stuck somewhere at middle afterwards.
I don't have problem printing to pdf from other applications including other browsers (Chrome and IE9). Uninstall/reinstall (complete removal including profile), reset, disabling all addons and extensions, none of these worked. Although the problem goes away when I use Firefox in safe mode. What could be the problem here? I tried disabling all addons and extensions without luck.
I saw similar problem in another thread (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/994052?esab=a&as=aaq) which says it got solved after updating to V29. But I have this problem at office where I use ESR release channel currently at V24.6.
Can anyone confirm that this is a Firefox bug and has been fixed in V29? If so I can wait until next month when ESR channel jumps to V31.
PS: I use Windows 7.
Thanks in advance for any suggestion or help.

Try toggling the status of hardware acceleration under Options → Advanced → General, then restart Firefox.
* [[Advanced settings for accessibility, browsing, system defaults, network, updates, and encryption|Advanced settings for… hardware acceleration]]
If there's no problem in Safe Mode, that suggests an issue with an add-on, a preference or a file in the profile, or hardware acceleration. Since you've already ruled out the other two, hardware acceleration is all that's left to try.

For me, Firefox will simply not print to XPS, though Internet Explorer doesn't have any trouble. Others have reported hanging when text is pasted into the "Save As" dialog. I haven't seen any reports of crashes, though that may be specific to the older version of Firefox you're using.
''Feel free to vote for the report to keep track of any progress, but please don't post comments unless you have technical information to add. See [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html the Bugzilla etiquette page] for details.''

As for printing to PDF, I can't turn up any confirmed bug reports.

I use Doro PDF Writer, which works fine.

When I try to print from, say, Google Maps on Firefox, it goes to Save Document and won't print. Prints PDF files from email attachments but also won't print an email. Not the same problem on Explorer
That is an MS Office document and everything on that page is a image as you can see in Tools > Page Info > Media and Firefox/Tools > Web Developer > Page Source
If you used MS software then make sure that you disable VML if you save that page because only IE can display pages with VML
You can look at KompoZer for an HTML editor that generates W3C compliant code.

MS Project 2007 files crash after converting to .PDF files
Need some help. Currently I create complex projects schedules (3-7 pages in length) and then convert to a .PDF thru Adobe Acrobat 8.1STD and although it takes a little bit, it does create the .PDF file. However when I open in Adobe Reader and try to scroll pages, it crashes and closes out Adobe completely without any error message after about 5-10 seconds. I run MS Office 2007 Small Business and all other conversions in Excel and Word are working just fine, it is only between these two software packages. Any Suggestions??
ThanksDear Tom Stangler
I have used Adobe Acrobat Distiller for printing MS text files, MS PPT files for conversion into PDF.
Excel files cannot be converted, as it looses its Cell Properties, no matter which convertor you use.
However, MS Excel files can be safely embedded in Adobe PDF format using Adobe Acrobat attachment tool, wherein you can edit it, and save also.
Adobe Distiller has options for ebook, print, screen functions. It hence requires to be edited for appropriate conversions.
Since these adjustments are rather cumbersome, I exclusively use
'Cute PDF writer 2.6' Freeware which comes along with Ghostscript convertor, does excellent job of easy convertions without any errors at all. It is very user friendly. Printing any number of pages for conversion int PDF is no problem at all.

Unknown error while trying to print PDF
I keep getting an unknown error when I try to print a PDF. The message is "Printing Error: The Adobe Print Engine has failed to output your data due to an unknown problem" followed by a note pad popping up filled with this:
%%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
%%[ Error: ioerror; OffendingCommand: readstring ]%%
Stack:
(› PoÈsKÖn µÐY5Âê2¢ ÷Fmø-êíöYJ
øR½=Ö¤%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
I the service chat pointed me at this link: Error "...The Adobe Print Engine has failed..." | Print | InDesign |CS, CS2, CS3 but none of those solutions solved the issue.
What I have tried:
Restarting the program and computer
Renaming the file
Going into the program setting as the link suggests
In the meantime I will use the PDF presets to make PDFs.Presumably you have a good reason for wanting to print PDF instead of exporting? For troubleshooting tips, see Adobe Community: File Crashing on Output - printing/PDF/other

Hp 3030 mfp won't print pdf files in windows 7 it
I am unable to print pdf files/documents and I am unable to scan documents into pdf format.
Hi there @jdwigg ,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I read your post, and I hope to help out! As you are able to print successfully from your Windows 7 laptop, the printer is functioning fine, and the issue is most likely software related to your Windows 8.1 computer.
Here are some links I would recommend you check out to see if they can help with the problem printing PDF files:
Re: can't print pdf from the new windows 8.1
Windows 8.1 Reader app unable to print PDF - prints fine with acrobat
Also try updating Adobe or getting the latest version: Adobe Flash Player Support Center
I hope this helps, have a great Monday

Scanned jpeg file crashes computer
I have a Canon 8800F printer. It's worked fine using Mavericks, but I just bought a new iMac that's running Yosemite (10.10.3) and it's been a nightmare.
At first the 8800F wasn't showing up at all, but I found directions about resetting the printing system and reinstalling the scanner. Now it shows up and I seemed to be able to scan using the Printers & Scanners system preference.
What's strange/awful is that when I click on the jpeg file that's created by the scanner it crashes the computer. I tried producing a tiff file instead, which opens up ok, but when I covert the tiff to jpeg the resulting jpeg file crashes the computer.
The other thing that I don't see an option for scanning transparencies. Under Mavericks I was using photoshop CS3, but that doesn't seem to be compatible with Yosemite.
Help!I think that I discovered that this only happens when scanning at the highest resolution (9200). It's not a RAM issue, as I have no problem opening the TIFF, which is much bigger than the jpeg. Kind of a drag as I scan a lot of negatives and some single frames from proof sheets, and I've never had this problem before the new iMac/Yosemite.
