File Crashing (was Re: Troubleshooting 101: Export to .idml or .inx to clear file corruption)
Both CS6 and CS5:
1.Try to open indd 2. looks normal 3. try to save - get rainbow ball 4. give up on saving and close file (doesn't save) 4. ID crashes with serious error 5. try again with .idml (<2 mb) or packaged file, same result.
This happens with 3 specific files, all of which have a very similar structure (>20mb indd, ~20-30 placed images (pdf, psd, ai), resides on Mac server), however other files with the same fonts on the same server are normal. Also, other designers can open these files on their iMacs and save normally.
I have:
-Restarted
-Checked for Mac updates
-Checked for ID updates
-Checked for Stuitcase Fusion updates, cleared font cache, checked for corrupted fonts, deactivated all unnecessary fonts
-Saved/opened file from Desktop
-Checked langauge settings
-Deleted preferences
-Restarted again
-Had others test the file, they have no problem. Had others save a new copy of the file, still same problems for me.
Time to reinstall?
After gathering reports from my system via a script, Entensis responded with:
I had our QA team look at your crash reports. InDesign is indeed crashing multiple times a day but we do not think Suitcase is causing the crash.
Something about a "protective shutdown" command from InDesign:
Thread 0 Crashed:: Main Thread Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread
0 PublicLib.dylib 0x016cb442 ProtectiveShutdown::~ProtectiveShutdown() + 278
1 PublicLib.dylib 0x016cb4c5 ProtectiveShutdown::~ProtectiveShutdown() + 17
2 com.adobe.InDesign.Document Actions 0x17b87784 0x17b85000 + 10116
3 PublicLib.dylib 0x01705e2c Command::DoImmediate(short) + 62
Possibly related thread:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/5800517
I let them know the crash only occurs with SF auto-ativation switched on, but they seem like they are no longer working to solve my problem... do I go back to ID and take ANOTHER look??
I tried doing this: http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-fonts-mac-os-x.html
but I was wary about deleting the com.apple.ATS.plist since I didn't want my thousands of fonts to be re-activated.
I also could not find this folder: Library/Caches/ATS folder (I did not see anything that said ATS)

Troubleshooting 101: Export to .idml or .inx to clear file corruption
Sometimes a particular InDesign file may behave badly (if all your files are doing strange things, see Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences ). In such cases the first thing to try is export to .inx if you have CS, CS2 or CS3(InDesign Interchange format) by selecting File > Export… and choosing .inx from the file type dropdown, or if you have CS5 or later export to .idml. The resulting file should then be opened in ID and saved as a NEW .indd file.
Interchange format was set up to allow users to open files in a version of ID one release earlier (minus, of course, new features) than the one in which they were created. It reduces the file to the bare minimum of information needed to recreate the layout, and as a side effect it often strips out minor corruption that will cause strange behavior but is not bad enough to prevent the file from opening. Other things Interchange Format can help with are removal of stubborn unused swatches and references to missing plugins.
The .idml (InDesign Markup) format was introduced in CS4 and in that version you have your choice (.inx is listed as CS3 interchange) and is the replacement for .inx going forward. My non-scientific intuition says that .idml is slighlty less effective than .inx at solving problems, so I would opt for .inx in CS4 as my first choice, but I also would not dismiss .idml out of hand if I suspect document corruption.
Updated 12/14/2011
Message was edited by: Peter SpierHow about if you are working on a book? Export is not
an option once you are in InDesign screen with the book file open but none of the component files open.. I have to export all 11 documents it is composed of?
Using CS5. That would be File>Export and in that window, Save As Type> in popdown choose IDML (index design markup language), right? Then I link the new files to the book and delete the others????
Thanks for your help. -
I am using itunes 10 and trying to consolidate my files. I keep getting the error "Copying files failed. The file name was invalid or too long". How can I indentify what file is causing this problem or resolve this issue?
BUMP
Yes, I just get that message. I don't see how I could investigate this problem.
I didn't mention that this happened when I was consolidating my library, not copying files to another computer.
In other words, I'm using a "normal" itunes procedure, itunes won't complete it, and won't tell me exactly why or how to figure out how to fix it...
Is there at least some easy way to tell which files were successfully copied to my itunes music folder so I can work on moving the uncopied files?
Can anybody help me? -
I have an old file that was made by macromedia flash, but I can't run this file in my Windows 7 64-bit ,while I can run it in Windows XP 32-bit
Hi momi macrom,
Have moved your post to the Flash forum. Experts here are better placed to help you.

I need one file as .inx ... I have it as .idml. Does someone have Adobe InDesign CS4, so that I could e-mail it and you could e-mail it back as .inx? I would really appreciate that
I'm sending you an upload link by private message....

Copying music failed. The file name was invalid or too long.
I went to consolidate my music, but when it got about 2/3 of the way through, it stopped with the error message, "Copying music failed. The file name was invalid or too long." I don't know which file it is referring to. How do I find this out?
I needed to cosolidate so I could backup the entire library to DVD. Now I'm left with two partially complete libraries with many duplicates. To find out which file it was, look at where you were
copying them too and see which was the last file
copied - and then go back to your source, and go to
the next one - it should be that one.
I just wanted to add that I had the same issue (failure to finish copying and "invalid or too long" error msg) and at first didn't see how looking for the last file copied would work since iTunes is copying into folders.
Duh.
Reverse sort by date modified (newest folder at the top of the list) then drill down to the folder containing the files being copied. Voila. There was the (missing) culprit, and I knew which file to rename in the source folder.
Thanks for the kick in the brain pan.

Error ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
Its also not thread just to share info with oracle gurus here.If my findings for the below workaround is wrong then please do correct me.
Sometime you get the error after performing restoring controlfile when you don't have autobackup controlfile on
error ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
why?
Cause When you shutdown the database with using the normal, transactional or immediate options not abort a full checkpoint occurs.A full checkpoint ensures that all of the dirty blocks contained in the buffer cache are written to the data files, the database comes into synchronized state at this time i.e controlfile CKPT SCN=databasefile CKPT.

you will get the error when you will restore controlfile from backup set.
error ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
Reason is that CKPT SCN in the datafiles will be ahead of the backupset control file no
full checkpoint occuring. You are not taking backup in consistent state and the
backupset will not be in consistent state. When you will restore the control file from
backupset then yours restored control file SCN will be lesser then yours datafile

"This is an Adobe Illustrator file that was save without PDf content."
I have a client that has been working on a file in AI CS, never left his machine, but when he went to open it today he gets a message that says this file "was generated by a newer version of Illustrator. Would you like to import this file? Some data loss may occur".
And when we click the "Import" button, we then get:
"This is an Adobe® Illustrator® file that was saved without PDF content. To place or open this file in other applications, it should be re-saved from Adobe Illustrator with the "Create PDF Compatible File" options turned on. This option is in the Illustrator Native Format Options dialog box, which appears when saving an Adobe Illustrator file using the Save As command."
However, even though this was created in AI CS, all other machine and all other versions of AI (even CS3, 3.3, 2, etc..) we get the same exact error message. How it can be newer than CS 3.3 when it was created in CS is strange to begin with.
I assume this is some sort of corruption, but was wondering if there were any cures. It seems our backups have backed up this file in it's current state (corrupt), which is a huge issue at this point.
Thank you very much for any help!I have sometimes had this trouble since I updated Acrobat.
"This is an Adobe® Illustrator® file that was saved without PDF content ..."
Not sure what's wrong - it seems to happen even though the Illy file is saved with PDF content and everything embedded.
Another thing: When viewing pdfs under Advanced>Print Production>Output Preview I repeatedly get an RGB simulation preview even though I know that the file is CMYK. So I have to choose a CMYK simulation preview and then things look o.k.
Is there any way to stop the RGB preview coming up? I note that Convert Colours messes things up completely, so it's only the preview that's wrong.
Any ideas, Wade? -
ORACLE error from auxiliary database: ORA-01152: file 2 was not restored fr
Hello,
i'm trying to clone a database. It is in archive log mode.

(This would also be the case for a NOARCHIVELOG database).
See the notes on NOREDO in the DUPLICATE command documentation in the Backup and Recovery Reference.

All is good until I try and open the database. What am I missing?? Why doesn't this work???
Because .... If I go through the exact steps but I perform a "recover database" instead of "recover database noredo", I can open the database!!!
Example :
6. restore database; no issues
7. recover database;

This is ok because seq 35 doesn't actually exist!
8. alter database open resetlogs;
database opened! You could also explore the UNTIL clause of the RECOVER DATABASE command to specify Recovery until a specific Log, SCN or Timestamp.
Since you are cloning a Hot Backup to another server the Recovery has to be an Incomplete Recovery. So, it will be to a Log, SCN or Timestamp -- either of which you could also explicitly specify with the UNTIL clause.

A pages File I was working on deleted by other device
When working on ipad in pages. The file I was working on suddenly deleted and I received message that the file was deleted by another device. Can file be recovered?
You can also make back ups of documents whilst working on a mobile device, just share the document to iTunes. Back ups via Time Machine are the easiest solution, but this way it also covers the possibility that documents created or edited on the mobile don't get synced properly to the Mac.

Indesign CC export to .idml not reliable
I just sent a large financial document to print. Its 132 pages.
The printer (like every printer I work with) has not purchased CC yet and apparently refuses to.
No prob - Ill just save as an .idml so they can open it in CS6, right?
WRONG! DEAD WRONG!
Turns out that when I save as .idml and its opened in CS6, random acts of weirdness occur.
Namely, lines applied to Indesign Table Cells can disappear. That's right. In a 132 page FINANCIAL document, the client is looking at a proof and asking why the lines are not in some places. Im lucky it was caught (by the client) before going to print.
I had no idea what the problem was because my files were fine. But I exported as .idml and opened it up in CS6 and... Lo and Behold, the lines were missing again in the exact same areas.
In the past I have just exported to .idml and sent to print, but I cannot have any faith in that process anymore. I encourage any and all to export to .idml, then open it up in CS6 and review every last line, break, color, etc. THEN send the CS6 file to the printer.
Or better yet, maybe dont use CC at all, which is what Im contemplating.I must thank you Bobby. Friday is our donut and pastry morning and when I came in and saw your ridiculous post, I brought the entire team in to get a good laugh.
Im not sure if you use Indesign in a professional capacity, or even work with printers or not, (from your comments and assumptions I would say no), but ever since there has been a way to backsave, it is exactly what has been done when sending files to print. Printers are notorious late adopters of new versions (for good reason). For years and years EVERY SINGLE printer we work with - whether its hear in San Diego, printers in New York, the Mid-West or even in China - every time we get a new version of the software and send it to print we have been asked to backsave the file. Hell, some print shops are TWO versions back! This is standard procedure and has been for over a decade. Sorry if you dont know this, but that is reality.
Also, your assumptions show a lack of understanding of a modern design studio. See, when you have governmental agencies, multi-national energy company's, Casinos with over 240 locations world wide, Hospitals, biotech companies, etc etc as clients, it is 8 times out of 10 the CLIENT who choses the printer - like I mentioned above. Additionally, (since apparently you are not aware of this), the client often does not make their final decision on which printer to select until WELL AFTER the project is underway. In this particular case we found out 3 days before it was supposed to go to print what printer it was. So your naive "the first thing you do when working with a new printer is pick up the phone" comment is truly uneducated and is very telling about your experience in the field.
Futhermore, anytime I come across a printer that requests PDFs (its extremely rare - we usually work with professional high-end printers with actual pre-press departments, not Mickey Mouse outfits that want me to do their prepress for them) - The first thing I do is call my client and ask them "you got a good price on printing didnt you." Of course they did because their printer wants ME to prep their files for them - so I need to go back to the client and raise my rates. Heck, I can do pre-press, I used to use a stat camera creating chokes and traps back in the day - then did the same with Illustrator - but that is not the role of the modern design studio, its the PRINTES responsibility. All respectable professional print shop wants to have control of the files so they can make adjustments for their presses and even humidity - i.e. Native Files.
Now, I originally made this post so that other professionals would be aware of the flaw in backsaving - a flaw that DID NOT EXIST BEFORE. I know this from years of experience. You comment that you dont care if I have been doing this for 240 years... but im still wrong, is the height of arrogance. I mean, do you even hear yoursel?
I was under the impression that this was the place that real design professionals discussed Indesign. Apparently its the place for people to rack up 28 thousand comments posting uneducated drivel. -
I have right clicked and selected open, and the loading ring shows but nothing happens. I have also extracted the files, opened them in itunes and windows media player. (cannot be accesed in itunes or wmp)
With ZIP files, extract was your best bet. Do the players report that the file is corrupted, or zero length?? You may need to check with the seller on whether the ZIPs downloaded correctly or see whether you can get another format.
You also could try downloading again using Internet Explorer, if they allow that.
