File disappears just by pointing at it in the Finder

Since we installed Leopard on some macs here, we're sometimes experiencing a strange phenomenon.
An Adobe Indesign file suddenly can't be selected anymore in the Finder. When a user tries to click or select it, it seems to disappear. Then when we try to select this same file on another (Leopard) machine, there's nothing wrong. The file is still there and can be selected and opened.
The user who's experiencing the disappearing of the file has to restart, then the problem is over for a while.
It only happens sometimes on different (Leopard) machines. But it's irritating enough. It also seems to happen only with Indesign (CS3) files.
Our Apple server operates on Tiger.
Hope someone can help us out here! Is it a bug?

My company is experiencing the same file disappearing problem with Helios UB. This is only happening on Leopard. Files would disappear as you click on them. My work around is to highlight all files in the folder and do a info one it. This would catch all the files that tend to disappear. Go outside of this folder and back again. The files that disappeared would show up again. But this time, they will not disappear. I can verify by highlight all the files in the folder and do a info lookup (<command+I>)
Does anyone have a real fix for this bug?

  • Multiple file copies just randomly miss a few of the files

This is something that has happened to me on all networks I've used. My home network (gigabit LAN or 802.11n), work network, and any client network I've ever been on while supporting.
I can select say 10 files on my MBP in finder. And either copy/paste or just drag to copy onto an SMB share (windows 2003 at home for my windows home server, also 2008 and 2008 R2 servers at work and clients). And the file copy goes fine. I see the progress window, it goes and I see the files populating the network share as it progresses. It runs the normal amount of time I'd expect for the speed of the network, and when it's done I get my sound. Then anywhere from three to nine of the files just disappear off the network share as the copy finishes. So it takes the time to copy them but does not complete.
And it's not an every time thing. And it ONLY happens with multiple files, i NEVER have a problem doing files singularly. The same files that fail in a batch go fine when I copy them one by one in the same session after it failed doing them all at once.
No errors on the windows side of things in the logs, disks are fine. Never happens with my MBP when I do it from windows either via VMware or booting directly into boot camp.
No errors on the mac side, for all intents and purposes it completed successfully. Yet almost every time I do group copies, only a couple actually are on that network share when all is said and done.
No AV or firewall on the server at the moment so it happens whether I have them enabled or uninstalled. No AV on the MBP.
And no disconnects, etc. I'm watching things in an RDP session while the copy is happening and I never lose the network, it never drops. Downloads that I sometimes have going on are working just fine, everything is just perfect in every respect as far as networking goes, except for those copying of multiple files.
Saw someone else had disabled write caching on the windows machine to overcome an actual error they had, and i had tried that in this instance long ago to no avail.
This has happened since I first bought the laptop in July of '09 and it was running leopard, and has continued through every single version update since. Wired or wireless...
    Thanks for any suggestions.

hey JDThree, i'm having the SAME EXACT PROBLEM!!! i've tried restarting both my server and my MBP, and it does the job a bit, but it's so random. even doing a single file copy doesn't seem to work. i tried copying over one file, then when it finished and was on the server, i copied the next file, and it removed the first file. so strange. anybody have any ideas?

  • Aperture picture files...can I get them in the Finder?

I'm using Aperture 2.1. I know Aperture stores it's images in a library like iPhoto...but is there a way to get to the pictures in the Finder so I can open them or copy and paste?

There are many, many ways to access your files in Aperture:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within Aperture. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from Aperture to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with Aperture not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS

  • Are the photos in the file 'iphoto library' duplicates of whats already in the finder? Also what would happen if i were to delete it?

So i found this iphoto library file and its a solid 10gb large, yet i still have all my photos seperate in my finder. I need to free up some space and i was wondering if i could delete this file without losing all my photos.

    Really important question:
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

i have some stuff i want to put on external hard drive when i drag the file or files it just puts them back

Did you format the external disk on Windows? If you did this, probably the external disk is formatted in NTFS. OS X can't write on this format, so it's normal that it doesn't allow you to copy the files.
In this case, you have three possibilities:
    1. Install Paragon NTFS. This program allows you to write on NTFS partitions.
    2. Copy the hard drive content to your internal disk and format the external disk with Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Do it only if you are going to use the external disk only with OS X.
    3. The same as the last one but formatting it with exFAT. This filesystem is compatible with Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8) and OS X (10.6.5 and newer), so you can write and read files on external disks formatted with it on Windows and OS X, but you may have problems on Linux

  • .Exe file disappearing after use Windows 7

So I have a .exe in a folder that after opening the .exe and closing it again, (It's a Ren'Py game), the file disappears.
If I try to extract the game again (It's in 3 zips) into the same folder I get Access Denied from the .exe. It is not a virus, my antivirus hasn't reported doing ANYTHING to a file or folder (I even manually scanned it and it said it was fine). I've set the
permissions to full access, and I'm the owner.
I have no idea why it is doing this. Anyone have any suggestions?

Can you try a different product and check ?

  • Cannot delete file from external hard drive (error code 36) in Finder, but Terminal is ok

I have a relatively new Macbook Pro Retina 15" and have a Western Digital 1 TB Passport.  I've been using the passport for about a year now without any problems on older Macbooks in my house.  I used to be able to read and write to this drive no problem.  I am using the Paragon NTFS for Mac software in order to read and write to the NTFS drive.  When I navigate through the drive in Finder, if I try to create a new folder, I do not have a problem.  If I try to delete that folder I just created, I get this error:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “untitled folder” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)
The folder has nothing in it whatsoever.  I just created it.  But if I go to Terminal and I run
    rm -rf "untitled folder"
This works fine.  Why is Terminal acting different than Finder?  This does not happen on my other Macbooks.  Thanks in advance.

Thanx for such qucik reply!!! The pages were great, it had an answer for my problem, but unfortunately it also involved me dealing with it only on the MacIntosh HD itself, not on mounted external drive I suppose... So it didn't work they say that there is an icon in the left corner indicating locked folder - I don't see any icon on it. It says you can untick the box to unlock the folder - there is no tick to be unticked. Finally, they say that if I don't have permition or rights I cannot delete it. But how do i change permittion which already says that i can read and write in it? So everything appears to be normal only I cannot delete it. there is not even any warnig telling me I don't have enough rights, it just requires the password and after me typing it in it makes the sound of scraping paper but does nothing more. I aslo had some problems with emptying Trash after being seemingly succesful with one file and had got so far to have them appear in the Trash (no clue how this one actully got there though..) I followd the advice and emptied the Trash with Terminal. The Folder is still there but it shows 0 Kb... So far so good BUT: It is still on the external drive, so I obviously only managed to copy it into the Trash!!! Phew, innit a bit too tight to poor owners, this macbook?? I want my rights back!

Running Mac OS X Version 10.7.2  Lion on a MacBook Pro
Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Any ideas?

    Hi Frank,
    Thanks.
My HD is a "normal" HD, so I guess it's HFS+. (According to Disk Utility it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The NAS is WD MyBook Live Duo. I just plugged into my Time Machine.
I am relocating using Aperture "relocate originals for project" under the File tab.
Ahh, thanks for the answer to question 1.
Yes, I am trying to relocate them, but tried different things to find the problem.
And the problem seems to be that when an image gets an extra attribute (when it's downloaded from the internet, when it is comes from a mail message) then Aperture seems not to be able to move the file.
I.e. Aperture presumeably asks the Finder or kernel to perform this task, and this then fails because of the extra attirbutes that were set.
I now found a way of manually removing the extra attributes, but that is a pain.
    Think of this normal workflow:
    - someone sends me an email containing images
    - I move the images to my Desktop
    - I then import the images into Aperture
    - I then decide to relocate my images for that project to my NAS
Then is when this problem occurs.
So I just tried to relocate to another place on my HD.
    That works fine.
I looked again at the error message.
And it says "could not set attributes com.apple.metadata:kMDItemDownloadedDate on destination file descriptor" .
So, yes, it seems like it has to do with the NAS not supporting setting the extra attributes.
And as long as there are no extra attributes on an image, there is no problem.
(Not completely true, but I have another thread about that)
Thanks Frank, I have to digest this a bit.
    Regards

  • File sizes shown to be twice as big in Finder

I work with 2 different Mac Pro towers.  The one at my home has Photoshop cs4 and the one at my studio has Photoshop cs6.  The other day I noticed that Finder on my studio computer shows the file size to be twice as big as the finder on my home computer.  The pixel dimension size doesn't change, just the file size.  It shows up that way after I save it on my studio computer. If I take that file home and resave it on that computer then the Finder shows the smaller file size again.  I guess the questions I have are: Is the file size is actually increasing and if so, what could be causing that to happen?  Photoshop shows the files to be the same size, but in the Finder window is where I see the difference.  Holla!!

Sounds like you have "Maximize Compatibility" enabled in the Photoshop which saves the bigger files, and have it disabled in the other Photoshop.
See the control in Preferences > File Handling.

  • Change the Finder search default to Find by Name (search by file name) rather than Find by Content

I just discovered another way to set the finder Find option to default to "find by name" (search by file name). I'm using Mac OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion. I'm not sure if this works on other OS versions, but it probably does.
    Here's a step by step:
    #1: Open System Preferences
    #2: Click on "Keyboard"
    #3: Click on "Keyboard Shortcuts"
#4: Click on "Application Shortcuts" (on my system this was the last item located on the left-hand side window)
#5: Click the little "+" right below the right-hand side window
#6: Click on the "Application" menu and choose "finder.app"
#7: Click into the field "Menu Title:" and type "Find by Name..." (Type it exactly like that including the three dots. Don't type the quotes BTW.)
#8: Click into the field "Keyboard Shortcut:" and press the command-key and F at the same time. It should look like this ⌘F
    #9: Close System Preferences
That's it. Basically what you are doing is remapping the command-F key (⌘F) to "Find By Name".
I tried to post this to other previous discussions asking this same question, but they were all locked.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • I've just updated and can't seem to find anyway to burn a DVD?

Ive just installed Mavericks and the latest imovie update and initially it lloks good but there doesnt appear to be any way to finalise and then burn the movie to DVD?
It plays fine in theatre and there are share options to Utube, facebook, e mail etc. but no export option which seems strnage am I missing something?

Apple no longer officially supports iDVD, but it still works just fine.
In iMovie go to File>Share>File, choose the size (probably should choose either SD or Large) then click Next, give it a name, then click Save.
Wait till the activity indicator shows that the video has been fully exported (could take a while depending on the size of the movie and the speed of your processor).
Go to iDVD. Go to File>Import>Video and select the file you just created. It will bring the video into your iDVD project.
This was always the way I did it in the previous version of iMovie. Works just fine.

  • Getting the Finder to display your list of files

    Hi all,
The program I am contemplating would create a list of files that may be in several different folders. I'd like to present that list of files to the user in a format similar to the Finder's search results, letting the user move, copy or delete the files. Is there a way to tell the finder to display a list of files? I'd rather not re-invent the wheel by making a Finder-like interface since the Finder does what I want. I just need to tell it the set of files I want it to act on. I could make a temporary folder and fill it with aliases, but that seems messy. The Finder search results window is much cleaner and has the nifty expanding folder path graphic at the bottom. I've dug around some for an Applescript means of doing this and for Finder Plug-ins.
If that's possible, is there a way to get the Finder to tell me which file is selected in any particular Finder window?
    Thanks,
