File error - FORMAT TOO NEW

I am very stuck at the moment. I am helping a uni student with a project in edits and this " "File's format is too new for this version of the application" message comes up but I have made sure the FCP versions were the same and they are.
I have FCP Studio 2 - FCP 6 - brand new - and the FCP that the student used was the same. Some of the FCP files I can open but most I cannot. I asked whether he worked on more then one computer and he said yes but all versions are the same.
I do not have the internet on my MAC so I cannot do an update so is there any other ways to fix this?

You say your FCS is brand new, but you do not have Internet, which puts you several subreleases behind.
From 6.0.1. to 6.0.2 for example there is a problem because a project created or modified in 6.0.2 can not be taken back to 6.0.1.
Also check the version of Quicktime you both are using.
Working with FCS and WT without the possibiity to upgrade via internet will cause you more similar problems down the road.

  • "File's format too new..." message

I am trying to open an FCP6 project started by another editor, and I'm getting a message that says: "File's format is too new for this version of the application". I am on FCP6.0.3, so I'm wondering if that editor is using FCP6 with Leopard and there is some version of the application I don't know about.
    Please enlighten. Thanks.

Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 was not only intended for Leopard, but brought along many different features.
Take a look at the official Release Notes, and you'll see that it is noted that projects created in FCP 6.0.2 are not backwards compatible. D Gilmore gave you some good advice by telling you to have your editor export an XML file for you to import on your FCP 6.0.1 macine.

  • File's format too new for this application

I am trying to use FCP6, which I just installed, on my new MacBook Air.  I have been editing in FCP6 for years on my iMac, and there are some projects I'd like to work on while I'm on the road, so I got a new MacBook for that purpose.  From the iMac, I was using an external drive to capture the footage and the fcp file is also on the external drive.  But when I hooked up the external drive to the new MacBook Air, I get the warning that "the file's format is too new to use with this application".  How do I solve this?  For what it's worth, the iMac is still on Mavericks, but the MacBook Air is on Yosemite.  Does that make a difference?

How did you do the installation of FCP6 on your new computer?
If it was from your original install discs, you may need to update the FCP6 that is on your laptop to a later version of FCP.6.
On your iMac, open FCP and once open go to the menu Final Cut Pro > About Final Cut Pro and look at your exact version number.
Then do the same for your laptop.
You may want to try migrating FCP6 from your iMac to your new computer to get the correct version on the laptop.

  • Director Player Error "The file version is too new"

    Short Question:
When I try to run a projector built with D12 on WinXP, I get a Director Player Error warning dialog that contains the text "Movie C:\Program Files\...\MyProjector.exe cannot be loaded.  The file version is too new."  What could be causing this error?
    Long Explaination:
I am trying to get an old Director 8.5 project to compile into a Director 12 projector with the least amount of work.
This project was built as a D8.5 projector for the client around 2005 for use on Win2000 and WinXP and now they want it to run on Win7.  It uses 3D, several 3rd party Xtras and one custom Xtra build originally with Visual Studio 6.  My client has a team of programmers bringing the custom Xtra up to Visual Studio 2010 standards while I try to get the Director projector to build with D12.
The client wants the application to look and run exactly as it did before.  The only changes we want to make are a few aesthetic logo updates, but that will come later after we get it to run as is under Win7.
The projector uses a lot of externally referenced files including SWF, W3D, WAV, 6 external cast files (CCT) and 3 external movies (DCR files).  All of the ActionScript scripts are compiled into the projector but most everything else is loaded at runtime.  Most of the scripts compiled fine under D12 and those that didn't only needed "scriptExecutionStyle = 9" added to them in strategic locations.  During the projector build I am also rebuilding the 6 external cast files, but I am trying to use all the other external assets untouched.  Unfortunately, this also includes the 3 external DCR files because the source DIR files have been lost over time.
While the other team works on the custom Xtra, I am trying to test my Director updates by substituting my new projector (EXE) and cast files (CST) into a fully functional WinXP installation of the application.  All other files are the old versions.
This seemed like a good testing approach, but when I try to run the projector, I get a Director Player Error warning dialog that contains the text "Movie C:\Program Files\...\MyProjector.exe cannot be loaded.  The file version is too new."  This doesn't make any sense to me since I thought the projector would embed all of the D12 runtime libraries it needed to run.
The first thing the projector does is load and play a splash movie that happens to be one of the old DCR files that I cannot rebuild.  Could this be the source of the problem or is this whole idea of testing by overlaying on a WinXP install flawed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    That's the problem.
You need to update (D12 compatible) or to get rid of those xtras.
I know, it's not an easy task.

  • Final Cut Pro 6 by Diana Weynard: Format too New FOR THIS VERSION OF APP?

I purchased the book book Final Cut Pro 6 by Diana Weynard and it is a basics book overview of FCP However it comes with CD and I have downloaded the CD to my hard drive and when i open the files in
FINAL CUT PRO 6 it says:
FILES FORMAT IS TOO NEW FOR THIS VERSION OF THE APPLICATION.
I did go to the website and download the updates.
I have upgraded osx to 10.5.5
    FCP is at 6.0.4
    Quictime Pro 7.55
    Whats going on?
I bought this book. And when I try to play the Lessons it says FORMAT TOO NEW FOR THIS VERSION OF APPLICATION?
    Are my settings wrong?
I have seen this same thread and now answer. I would appreciate some major help from the top users on here! thanks guys

the projects included with this book were built with and for FCP 6 ... if you do not have FCP 6 then its no good to you.
what version of FCP are you running? with FCP open, choose *Final Cut Pro* menu *> About Final Cut Pro* and see what version it says there in the splash screen

Did you reinstall CS3 after CC?
For that matter, doing an in-place upgrade on the OS is always a gamble with Adobe programs. Reinstalling all the versions you need, in order, would probably solve your problem.
And you shouldn't need to save as IDML after opening the .inx in CC.

  • InDesign CC can't open file - error: saved in newer version (CS7.0)

My coworker and I set up CC accounts last month (upgraded from CS5) but now when I'm trying to open a file she edited recently I get this error: "Cannot open "file name.indd" because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign (CS7.0). You must use that version or later to open the file. To then enable it to be opened in this version, choose Save As InDesign CS4 or later, or export to IDML."
Both are PCs. We are using the same software it seems so I'm confused as to the CS 7 version she is saving in and doesn't allow me to open the file.
    Any suggestions?

Here we see what happens because Adobe went for CC instead of CS7: people that have a Creative Cloud account get confused: 'a creative cloud must be version CC' - while it still can be CS6. Not the first time I've heard this confusion the last fee weeks...
Imagine later when hew versions come out and Adobe sticks to its plan to call all versions CC instead of CC1, CC2 etc.

    Hi there,
I guess a simple modification to your PATH statement would solve this, you can also specify "-I /usr/include" in your makefile as a path to search for. So I only think your environment needs a little twinkling.

  • FCP 4.5 files "too new" to open in 5.1

For what it's worth, this is definitely a bug in my opinion. I have several 2-year-old projects which I have been asked to restore for some minor changes and remastering. I am gettin the "too new" message on these files. These project files are coming from my backups, and have not been changed since August of 2004. They were definitely saved from FCP 4.5. I have tried opening them on four different machines, both Power PC and Intel. All of our systems here have already been upgraded to 5.1 - I may have to find a machine with 4.5 to try that.
There must be some scrap of code in these 4.5 project files which are not recognized or supported in FCP 5.1, which keeps FCP from recognizing the version - it doesn't think the files are acutally too new, FCP just doesn't recognize something in the files, and can't describe the error any other way.
Any suggestions would be helpful, but I am suspecting the only way this issue will be fixed is through an FCP update which specifically addresses this issue.
    My system is a non-intel dual 1.8 G5.

the only thing i might suggest is check your current version ... FCP 5.1, 5.1.1, and 5.1.2 all use different project formats (or at least 2 different kinds) - are you the most current ie 5.1.2. i know it doesn't make sense, but that doesn't mean it might not help you ...

  • Error message - File format is too new for this version...

This is a new Error message. Never seen it before. How can a project file be too new. I'm on FCP 6, and always have been. Just started getting the message today. Some projects launch fine, some get about 1/2 way through the Reading Project load, then the program hangs, till I force a Quit.
    Ideas?

    Nick,
I re-installed Final Cut 6.0.5 - the only version I've ever owned. I updated the Pro Opps. I restarted. Still no good. THEN... my internal 1TB Hard Drive crashed. Off the desktop. Disk Utility.app says it is not repairable. Do you think it caused the problem, as it was dying? Do you have a suggestion for trying to recover the drive. Of course, that is where all my data files are.

  • Can't open Project - The file format is too new for this version of the pro

    Hi everyone
I have the following Problem with my Final Cut Express: When I try to open a project i get an error message: "The file format is too new for this version of the program". (my FCE is in german, this is the google translation!)
I have already erased all the rendering files, but no luck.

Have you recently reinstalled FCE and forgotten to update it?

A project that was edited in FCE on an iMac will not open in FCE on a MacBook Pro. When I try to open it, I receive the error: File's format is too new for this version of the application.

    Thanks for any help.

  • 'File's format is too new' after re-installing FCS2

    Hey Everybody -
My compressor often stops working for some reason. I've tried Compressor Repair and few other methods I've learned from the forum to get it working properly. However, most of the time the only way I get it working again is to remove the entire FCS2 suite and re-install it. I've done this a number of times in the past and had no problems. Today, I un-installed/re-installed everything. Motion and Compressor are working fine, but FCP is not. When I attempted to open a project I've been working on it gave me this message - 'file's format is too new for this version of the application'. Is there anything I can do to open my project?
    Thanks For Your Help,
    Isaiah Smith

Yes, I installed everything. I just noticed a warning for FCS users not to relocate any of the applications. The first thing I did after installation was put all my FCS applications into one main folder within the Application Window. Could that be causing the problem?

  • File Format is too New

I got some files from the computers at school with the hopes of working on them at home, and it says the files are too new. i thought i had he most up to date version, but i guess not. What can i do to work on my movie at home? or is this not possible? Thanks

Doesn't really matter, does it? If your home install says it's too new and you've got 5.0.4, the only thing it can be at school is 5.1.x - and the only way to work on it at home is to (as others have mentioned) export an XML of your project and import that into a new project at home...
